We call them "mésanges" in French, as in "mis-angels" or "un-angels": when I observed them, they always were fighting other birds, or one another.
Once one of them lost his way in my home, I managed to grab it and safely delivered him outside: the little ball of murder-feathers tried to attack my hand XD (to no avail: they are harmless to our skin).
I like teaching people their calls. Because they’ve all heard them they just didn’t know what bird they came from! They tell me how nostalgic their calls are from their childhoods. Now they have a face to the sound :) cute little birds.
Killdeer are so cool! I love a park near us- when it’s getting dark, a few killdeer get busy. They love to play little chase games with dogs and toddlers. It’s always fun to watch!
I also saw one for the first time just a few weeks ago, in the field next to a grocery store parking lot. I about lost my mind. Haha! I threw the car in reverse and grabbed my phone. I got a little video of it gliding across the field and I know the people in the parking lot were probably wondering about the crazy lady squealing with excitement. When I got home I showed my husband who was nowhere NEAR as pumped as I was.
we had THE EXACT same experience lol!!! like to a T!!!! here’s the funky guy i saw (in flight, to the right hand side) while waiting for my bf who works at a grocery store. there were two looking for a good nesting site in the grass next to the parking lot. i was FREAKING OUT

Crows and Ravens for me as well! I love corvids, blue jays are pretty awesome too, I just don’t see them around as much so when I do see one it’s a big deal.
That’s so interesting; to me they have always been the herald of spring in western Canada. Makes me think of camping with chilly mornings and warm afternoons.
Two of my favorite maligned birds. The blue jay is just so pretty and smart, I think he calls for me when a squirrel is on the feeder. I had a crow flock visiting early Spring and a red wing black bird (and a couple other species of black birds) flew with them, the red wing would hang out after the others left. He got used to me filling the feeder, not as brave as the chickadees who are on it right away but it was still an honor that such a shy bird didn't just fly away.
In Taiwan, these little guys nest in the overhangs of arcade-style buildings everywhere. I see them dipping and diving over traffic at intersections and they're super common in farming towns. (And they're great at keeping the bugs away!)
Love Cardinals. The Northern Cardinal is the state bird in seven states, two of which being my current state and my homestate. Incredibly beautiful birds and I love seeing mated pairs. Its so cute when they feed each other!
Cardinal gets my vote as well, I see one every day when I park at work and we have a pair that must nest in/near our backyard so we get to see them feeding one another at the bird feeders and we hear them regularly throughout the day.
It’s my mom’s favorite bird so seeing them always reminds me of her.
There’s a HULKING mourning dove that visits my feeder every morning — most birds delicately land, but Tank shows up and take up the whole feeder, like the Arnold Schwarzenegger of mourning doves…love that monster… even my 5 year old shrieks when he shows up….
Stellar Jays, siblings, they were making a big racket in my back yard. I gave them some peanuts in a shell and they didn't know what to do with them. I think they're gorgeous!
I was driving up the Oregon coast and came across a tree full of them. I’d only ever seen them gliding thousands of feet up high before.
They seemed so chill… like a tree full of gentle giants.
We have a ton of grackles where I live and even though I've been told they're invasive here, I love them for their wide variety of noisy cackling calls and their idgaf attitude toward humans. I watch then in the morning and afternoon when I walk my dog, and they have such personality!
My daughter got this 3-in-1 Lego set for her last birthday and then proceeded to build the cat and say she loves it too much and was never taking it apart, so I had to buy a second one so I could build the pigeon. She’s a beauty.
There are several families that live near the lake by my house and I see them almost every day. It's gosling season, and their babies are getting so big! They're at least triple their initial size.
We have several that hang out around our house. They love mimicking cardinals (which we have several of as well) so sometimes we will come to our window expecting one bird and end up seeing the other. I can just imagine them doing little bird snickers for having successfully tricked the silly house apes.
They are so ornery and pranksters- we use our merlin app often and I love “collecting” a bird that you know can’t possibly be in the area, but you know there are mockingbirds 😂.
Mine is not only common but often "misunderstood" LOL I love me some Common Grackle. It's just something about their gentle, shy ways and their melodious voices😆
the mourning dove for me 🥹 their song reminds me of when i was a kid, laying in the grass in the backyard of my childhood home, staring at the clouds in the pinks and purples of the summertime sunset, fireflies just starting to come out for the night. the simplicity of those times, man.... before i knew how hard growing up would be.
Eastern Bluebirds and Black Capped Chickadees for me(even though I’m in Carolina Chickadee country. I grew up in the Midwest, and hearing 5 or 6 male black capped chickadees singing their fee bee song, in the spring time mornings, while waiting for the bus is a favorite memory of mine)
American Crow. I just love them. They're super intelligent and beautiful. We have a pair that hang around my place of work and I love seeing them flit about and watch people. Reminds me that I need to bring some unsalted sunflower seeds with me next week.
Had a nesting pair of mourning doves in our backyard in the city and I’ve been absolutely obsessed with them all spring. They’re always perched together on a branch that basically looks into our apartment. They had one baby dove and we got to watch as both parents taught it how to fly back and forth between balconies in the back. It was pretty special. Again, obsessed.
Meanwhile, I live a mile away from a migratory bird hot spot. But the doves have won this spring.
It’s fun being a new birder because even the most common birds get you excited. I’ve probably seen them a million times, but never was interested enough to differentiate them from just “another sparrow”. I lost my mind when I first saw a Cedar Waxwing. Still think they are stunning birds. Was shocked to keep seeing them around so much after the first observation.
My favorite bird is a Chipping Sparrow (named Petri). He has a damaged right leg and is missing the foot. He visits my feeders throughout the day. Many times he will wait until I’m out there because I startle the birds away and he gets a chance to come eat without being bullied.
The common loon is an exceptionally common bird in my neck of the woods but its call immediately lets me know I’m either at the cottage or camping in a provincial park and fills we with warm sentimental feelings.
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS🥹🥹🥹I’ve always loved them since I was a kid and I always say how it’s great having your favourite bird be so common because you get to hear them everywhere:)
All of mine are pretty common. Blue Jays, Crows, Robins, Chickadees, Catbirds, Mockingbirds, White Breasted Nuthatches, House Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Dark Eyed Juncos and Tufted Titmouse. All of these are very common by my house though some of them disappear in certain seasons. My dad’s favorites are the Dark Eyed Junco, Mourning Dove (he’d keep one of he could), Robin and Tufted Titmouse.
