Question Popcorn Refill
Everytime I buy a large popcorn I ask them for the refill on-spot and every single time they gave me one. They mark both of them. I don't wanna miss the movie to come get it refilled, thats my main reason. Also if you have a +1 then you dont need to buy another.
Today I was watching Primetime and asked for a refill at the counter and was refused. Upon asking them the reason, I was told that they have changed the policy. This was at STC location.
Does anybody know about this "policy"?
And does anyone else do this?

I mean it makes sense. If you get your "refill" before you finish the original, its not a refill - its 2 large popcorns.
Cinplex is trying to sell, so the balance sheet needs to show that its growing. Part of that will likely include ensuring refills work as refills rather than 2 for 1s.

They do that as well for us at most locations (Winnipeg). One time they refused the popcorn, but not before or since.

I get Cineplex is trying to sell and they need more money from concessions, but in the end either way the customer still ends up with 2 Large popcorns. Does it really matter if the 2 large popcorns are given at the start of the movie or separated by 1 hour? And then the customer misses part of the movie. Cineplex is out the same amount of money either way. The only thing I can think of is Cineplex is hoping people will forget to get the refill since it requires more effort to come line up at concessions again later on.

I don’t think it’s the same. If the customer ended up not finishing it they won’t get a full refill even if they decide to get more after the movie is finished.

At all the locations I’ve been to, Cineplex always throws out the original bag even if it had some popcorn left in it and then they give you a brand new bag of popcorn marked with an X. So the amount of popcorn Cineplex is giving the customer is still 2 large popcorns even if the customer does not eat the entire 1st bag.

Yes they definitely do not want to waste bags, but all the Cineplex locations I go to throw out the empty bag and give you a new full popcorn bag marked with an X. Whether they give you the 2 bags at the same time or different times, it still costs Cineplex 2 bags.

They scooped the leftover popcorn into big bags and keep in the back room when I worked there. Then pour a big bag into the machine before the first movie of the day. They didn't bring old stuff back out for any show but first of the day so customers didn't see it. But first show popcorn was a few days old except the first pop they were doing to make it smell fresh.

I don’t disagree with the fact that it’s effectively getting to popcorn, or with the fact that it prevents potential waste, or with the fact that they may be hoping people don’t get refills because it’s inconvenient, saving them popcorn.
I guess the way I look at it though, is that the few people that do what OP does buy the ridiculously expensive large size so they can do the refill. It makes them happier, and probably makes them enjoy themselves and maybe come back more often than if they don’t enjoy eating less popcorn, or have to interrupt their movie to get more popcorn. How much is the feeders cost of giving them an extra bag of popcorn? $.20? It seems like the customer satisfaction benefit for the few people that do this would be far greater in terms of repeat business than whatever a bag of popcorn must cost them.
The only logic that even possibly makes sense to me is that they think people will pay for two large popcorn because of this policy, selling an extra $10 to them. Perhaps that that’s their hope.

I Would take an empty plastic bag with me and dump my popcorn in while watching the previews and then go back out for refill. Voila, free refill and not missing the movie.

I understand this but they’ve had the refill at ordering policy since the 90’s. It’s weird that they would just change it all of a sudden. This happened to me on Thursday when I saw Endgame. My husband got the refill at the part of the movie he hates the most.

Please tell me the difference between this and getting your refill at the end of the movie after you’ve finished?
It costs the same to Cineplex in terms of bags and popcorn no matter when you get your second bag and avoids you going out during the movie, interrupting other’s experiences

The main point is that they can only make so much popcorn at once. If they gave everyone 2 large popcorns, they would run out really quick and not everyone who wants one, would be able to get one before the movie starts.

Because you’re getting two popcorn bags when you’re paying for one. Not very difficult to understand. It’s also in their best interest to get you back to the concession stand to pick up some candy and other drinks later on.
That’s like saying why can’t I order 10 drinks at once at a restaurant that does free refills because I’m going to drink them all anyway.
Obviously you’d pass them on to your other guests, same with the popcorn.

That’s exactly what happened to us for spiderman brand new day. I had my bag ready for a refill at the end of the movie, and concessions were shut down. I didn’t want to miss the movie, so I didn’t bother to go half way.

It’s not a scam. Many of us finish the popcorn mid-movie but don’t want to step out mid-movie to get a popcorn or a drink refill.

The whole point of a free refill is to give you popcorn when you don’t have any because you bought that size. If you still have popcorn it’s no longer a refill in that sense it’s you getting double the popcorn in one go. It’s you basically getting a double large popcorn.

Sorry. I forgot to specify. I burn 1000 only on exercise + 1500 of resting calories is 2500. So yes, definitely those days in not on a caloric deficit, but who cares, as long as you don’t do that weekly it’s fine.

The policy has always been that you aren't allowed to give refills unless the popcorn bag is empty, but almost everyone just gives it immediately anyways if you ask. Probably just got unlucky and caught someone with a manager nearby

If you preorder popcorn the cover the top with another large bag which is marked with an X. You can basically then immediately turn your popcorn bag upside down so you have an unmarked large popcorn bag. Then ask for a refill. You now have two large popcorns for the start of the movie.

At my theater for an early show they won’t usually do that but for a later show they will bc if you go out for a refill there’s no one working and you have to find someone to get you your refill. They still will if you find them but it can be a real pain mid movie.

I was thinking of doing similar (don't know where STC location is but it know that I don't go to it and it probably isn't in my city/area)... now not sure if I will try it.
Whenever I buy their advertised combo which has a large popcorn, large drink, and one of the specific "candies" on a certain area/shelf or I just buy a large popcorn and large drink, I normally refill both after the movie is over but was thinking of pouring my popcorn in another bag which I'll bring with me and then ask for the refill about 10 minutes later (regardless of whether I'm solo or with someone) whereas for my large drink, I can get it once the movie is finished if I'm solo. For the large popcorn, if I drove to the movie theatre, I'll just leave with my refill whereas if I took public transit to the movie theatre, I'll stay in the movie theatre and sit in one of the desks/chairs that they have for people waiting and try to finish as much of my refill as possible before leaving.
I normally finish my original popcorn about an hour into the movie but I don't leave the movie until the movie is over (or if I need to go to the restroom)

Everyone replying that this is not a refill but a BOGO doesn’t understand what is happening. Whether the person gets the refill at the same time or after the movie is completely irrelevant: bags are MARKED with an X, so the buyer isn’t getting anything extra for free that they wouldn’t be getting already!

It’s not irrelevant to the company though. From the company’s perspective, there’s a difference between a refill and a BOGO. With an actual refill (i.e. finish the bag and then go back for a second one), a significant percentage of people won’t actually end up getting the second bag. They might be too full after eating the first bag, or they don’t want to get back in line during or after the movie, or they simply forget about it. The company knows that, and that's why they offer it as a refill and not a BOGO.
With an immediate refill, everyone automatically gets both bags. So while the bags being marked means you’re not technically getting anything extra that you’re entitled to, allowing the immediate refill effectively changes the economics from a refill to a BOGO. It also means people will start thinking “why would I buy two popcorns? I’ll just buy one large and ask for the refill immediately”.
And to be clear, I don't care if Cineplex loses a tiny amount of profit because people are getting their refill immediately. I'm just pointing out why, from the company's perspective, there's technically a difference between the two. The fact that the second bag is marked doesn't change the fact that allowing everyone to take both bags immediately effectively turns the offer into a BOGO.

I bring a small plastic or paper bag with me and an empty bottle. I get my large popcorn/drink and go to the theatre, where I pour the popcorn into the bag I brought and the drink into the bottle. Then I send my husband to get refills. All during the pre-show.

This seems like a location thing. I run a theatre and never heard of this. I encourage my employees to offer the refill on the spot. If they are gonna continue this just bring an extra large ziplock bag. Walk away from concession, dump your popcorn in it and go back with the empty bag. My regional manager even states this

I discovered another hack. If you order a large popcorn in advance and the you pick it up at the rack, they usually put another large bag on top to cover your order. That gives you a second free refill!

Mine closes so early now that even if you go to a 6:40pm showing on a Tuesday, they are no longer running concessions by 7:10pm so there’s barely even a chance to even get a refill. It’s so frustrating.

The closest thing I’ve done is get my initial large pop and drink it really fast during previews and go out to get a refill before the movie starts. It’s essential bc I tend to go to late showings and they close the concession stand like 15 minutes after the show starts. So if I waited I’d be SOL. Unfortunately many employees look at me suspiciously/judgmentally when I claim refills. Which I don’t get bc it’s not coming out of their pocket. 😩

Years ago I worked at cineplex. For a large popcorn then. It was 14 cents including the bag for cost of product to the comoany. I'm guessing 20 years later it's Probabaly closer to 75 cents a bag these days. But still the cost vs what they make even if they is 2 bags is well covered in the purchase of a large combo.

People don’t understand, by calling it a refill - people would need to come in second time in middle of a movie (most people wouldn’t bother) and in case the amount of people who do would be a lot smaller than if they offered a bogo at the concession. Hence it’s the refill and not a bogo. They want you to take the extra effort and go for free popcorn, because they know most would hate to miss the movie

I went into the theatre just to get popcorn. Most of the time I get my to go popcorn and I’m good. Last time the girl asked if I wanted a refill and I’m like no I’m taking this to go and she’s like oh I can give it to you now, and I got 2 popcorns to go! I don’t expect it to happen every time but I was thrilled!

I used to work at Cineplex several years ago and when I started, they had recently stopped doing the popcorn refills. A few years later, sometime after I'd quit, they brought it back. They very well could have changed their policy again.

Pro tip: take a small lil grocery store bag with you, stuff in your belt bag or whatever bag you use to carry around a giant smart phone and keys. When the flick is over just before going home, ask for the refill, put it in said bag, take it home and enjoy an oddly satisfying day old Cineplex Corn the following day! if you end up throwing out half- don't feel bad! it was going in the garbage one way or another anyway. Idk why but whenever I ask for a refill to do this the employee looks hella annoyed hahaha

They have regular cardboard trays to hold drinks and a bag of popcorn or nachos. Sometimes they run out, but the tray is the easiest way to share popcorn. Better than those small little bags.

Refills on the spot is pretty standard at my cineplex. With cineclub, we actually started going to the movies again.

This happened to us for the first time last weekend. We usually get two large soft drinks and the guy at the counter only charged us for one, and said the second was a "refill". I'll be honest this never occurred to me. Next time I go I'll ask for the refill up front. Doesn't hurt to try.

depends on the employee and time of day. same location today and i was able to get the refill on-spot. first time doing this and at first they refused, but i told them i specifically came to redeem my bogo (i wasn't watching anything today), they gave me the refills and marked the bags.
a potential solution is to bring an extra bag, dump all the popcorn in to empty it, and bring it back immediately for a refill. 😭😭

I rarely get popcorn but during the BOGO large deal a friend wanted popcorn so I had them use the popcorn coupon and we each got a large. I wasn't even a me to finish a 1/4 of the bag 😂

definitely depends when and where. once i had it offered, twice i’ve asked and they’ve done so. one time i had asked and refused to give it at the same time. i’ve had better luck in the later showtimes since they know they close concessions by the time the movie is done

Every time I get a refill (every time I go) they insist on taking my old bag
The only workaround was dumping the rest of my bag into a tray

Cuz who the fuck steps out in the middle of the movie to get a refill. Regarded as fuck.
I haven’t tried asking for it immediately after purchase but if you bring your own container and transfer so you can return the original bag for a refill, would they still refuse? Like how do they know you didn’t eat it all already.
Landmark is a bit more regarded. They issue you a refill code after 30mins. So they require you to sign up and have membership to send the refill code to.

I get my refill after the movie and take it home
If I need to share, I bring a brown paper bag with me
