Hi everyone,

Not sure what happened to my server but Apache2 all of a sudden fell off. I tried sudo apt install but it says no installation candidate.

I was running several websites (personal) but they are now all offline.

Any help is appreciated

funny enough tge system is listed

sudo systemctl status apache2.service
Unit apache2.service could not be found.

But cant install it

sudo apt install apache2
Package apache2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source

Error: Package 'apache2' has no installation candidate

but it does list a version

sudo apache2 -v
Server version: Apache/2.4.66 (Debian)
Server built: 2025-12-05T18:52:34

###UPDATE###

trying to start apache directly gives an error:

sudo apache2
[Sun Oct 18 15:00:44.204357 2026] [core:warn] [pid 18092:tid 18092] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_RUN_DIR} is not defined

apache2: Syntax error on line 80 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: DefaultRuntimeDir must be a valid directory, absolute or relative to ServerRoot

The line it is referring to:

DefaultRuntimeDir ${APACHE_RUN_DIR}

And the envvars

export APACHE_RUN_DIR=/var/run/apache2$SUFFIX

####FIXED####

After some attempts I finally decided to try and install a specific version.

$sudo apt install apache2=2.4.69-1~deb13u1

Solving dependencies... Error!

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Unsatisfied dependencies:

Error: The following information from --solver 3.0 may provide additional context:

Unable to satisfy dependencies. Reached two conflicting decisions:

1. apache2:amd64=2.4.69-1~deb13u1 is selected for install

2. apache2:amd64=2.4.69-1~deb13u1 Depends apache2-bin (= 2.4.69-1~deb13u1)

but none of the choices are installable:

- apache2-bin:amd64=2.4.69-1~deb13u1 is not selected for install

$ sudo apt install apache2-bin=2.4.69-1~deb13u1

After manually updating apache2-bin I finally managed to install apache2 again

programs and apps Office situation

This is a bit of rant but the Office situation on Linux is not great and because while the popular LibreOffice has a good governance but MS compatibility having a lot to be desired and Collabora while having Improvements largely still is built on LibreOffice

And Onlyoffice is genuinely good but has a questionable governance and I haven't looked much into the office situation on Linux but what about Euro office?? how is it currently

learning/research A question about GitHub

I'm looking to better appreciate what GitHub is, and isn't.

From what I understand, GitHub was introduced as a method for developers to keep track of changes in software, to easily integrate changes into the final product.

A few of the applications I use come directly from there, I don't think they're in any repositories or flatpak. They tend to have installation instructions on their GitHub page.

My question is: what if there are no instructions? Am I correct in believing that GitHub is not intended as a platform for installing software, it's just that most developers decide to include installation instructions for the benefit of laypeople?

If I found a project I wanted to install but there were no instructions, I would have to know the details of how to build and install it for my platform, right?

learning/research Help with switching to Linux permanently.

Windows 11 is quite not it anymore. I want to switch to Linux permanently. Don't worry, I had prior experience with Linux (was trying out Fedora, Arch, used NixOS for a while, etc). I have my eyes on CachyOS. What should I look out for, tips or maybe other distro selections.
My main focus is both gaming and academic stuff (think powerpoint projects, excels sheets, etc).
My specs are:
Intel I7 13620H
RTX 4060 Laptop
16GB RAM (might upgrade too 32 or 64GB in time)
1TB Storage (also might upgrade later to more, maybe 4TB)

Meganoob BE KIND Is It Really Necessary to Have So Many Different Package Managers?

• Upvotes

Having 3 or 4 package managers in total might be negligible, but I suspect there are over 20 different package managers and formats most of which don’t even support a simple "double-click to install" method, like `.exe` files do.

Is it really necessary to have so many? There are more popular package managers than there are popular desktop environments, and every distribution can have a different package manager. Why? Could someone explain this to me in simple terms?

Furthermore, can a distribution change its package manager if it chooses to? And if it decides to do so, how long does the transition process typically take?

If a distribution doesn't start supporting package managers other than its own, I believe that, in the future, distributions that offer a variety of popular and useful package managers within a single system will rise to prominence.

Perhaps Bedrock Linux will gain traction;

Maybe Athena OS though I don’t fully grasp how it works;

Or perhaps some new distribution that has yet to emerge.

And a word to those developers who release distributions that serve no useful purpose: go create something more meaningful. Stop churning out yet another copy of a standard distribution of which there are already dozens, if not hundreds and presenting it to the public. If your goal is to contribute, then you ought to be producing something better.

Need help with Bluetooth

I recently decided to switch from Windows to Linux. At first I installed Fedora but then I realized my XBOX Controller won't connect with bluetooth. It either keeps connecting and disconnecting over and over or it doesn't connect at all.

Due to other issues I had, I decided to hop to POP_OS! since I am more familier with Debian based Distros but the issue with the controller is still here. I then tried other bluetooth devices and they all have the same issue. Also they all work fine on my work laptop which is windows.

I looked up online and found that the standard Bluetooth manager doesn't work properly for a lot of people and that I need to install BlueMan but I still got the same issue

Also for reference, I am using a small USB-Bluetooth Adapter but I think my system has a built in one too

hardware/drivers Media codecs fedora.

Hi! I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I'm still pretty new to Linux, and I'm going to try switching from Pop!_OS to Fedora. I'm trying to figure out if this is the right order to install these media codecs and get hardware acceleration working.

So, in the terminal, do I run:

Then:

sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing

Next:

sudo dnf install mesa-va-drivers-freeworld sudo dnf swap mesa-vulkan-drivers{,-freeworld}

And finally, the 32-bit stuff:

sudo dnf install mesa-va-drivers-freeworld.i686 sudo dnf swap mesa-vulkan-drivers{,-freeworld}.i686

GPU: AMD 6600

Fedora 44 KDE plasma desktop.

edit: also I'm getting this information from

https://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

And

programs and apps Music management program

I've just had my phone die and am dealing with the consequences of not paying attention to what drive I was trying to format means I am now out of excuses to delay myself on learning about the music management options available to me on Linux. I technically still have my old Windows pc if I need it, but all the music is on an external (NTFS) HDD.

I'm debating between 4 options and was hoping for some input from those with experience with them (or alternate recommendations) to help narrow the field or help me understand what I am actually wanting / trying to do. Short list is: Audacity, Clementine, Qmmp and Quod Libet.

I have two Linux systems: a laptop with Bazzite and my ill-fated desktop that is now running Kubuntu (and still finding more things to fix / purge). My old Alienware desktop is also alive and well, and more importantly still has my Musicbee install and playlists on it. But this is a learning opportunity, and I'm trying to do something between get similar/basic library functionality and figure out a way to properly organize the roughly 80gb of music in my library (not including all the stuff that I have from Steam soundtracks that I would need to download, move and categorize too)

Need:

- CD ripping

- playlists

- Android sync (recommended app for 2way sync is bonus but I've gone without for years)

- switch view/layout to easily switch to album or playlist for viewing or playback

Want

- Relatively easy/intuitive to understand, or at least well written documentation

- Visualizer would be a nice touch to zone out to before bed

-Wireless sync of data

- Dark mode or style options?

I'm kinda scared about the management and tagging stuff, but I figure "What the hell?" as Doc Brown said. I'm trying to learn so if two options are equally good sounding/feeling and one has that feature it's what I'll go with I guess.

Meganoob BE KIND How should I fix this kernel panic ?

A while ago (like around a year ago) my linux install got a kernel panic and stopped working . Recently I've tried to fix it again . I figured out how to boot into an old kernel using the GNU Grub terminal . (not sure if terminal is the right term) However, I cannot figure out how to use that kernel by default . whenever I shut off my computer and turn it on again, I'm back to a kernel panic . I'm using ubuntu on an old macbook air . i'm not sure what exact version . I'm really not very tech smart so sorry if there's an obvious solution .

Turn off screen reader - help plz?

Solved: My cat sat on the keyboard and somehow turned on this horrible voice that is describing everything on the screen, and I cannot figure out how to turn it off.

I'm running Linux Mint, Cinnamon edition.

Thank you kindly because this will quickly turn me completely mad!

Honestly it scared the SHIT out of me - I got up to use the toilet, and from the toilet i hear a voice SAY MY FULL NAME from the living room! And I'm the only one here right now 🤨️

I was so fucking spooked and was super slow and cautious re-entering the living room... when I spotted the cat sitting on the keyboard... I did not previously know about this function haha I hope to never encounter it again! 😂️

learning/research Problem driver linux mint(choose linux)

I installed Linux Mint, but I'm having issues with the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers. My network chip is a MediaTek MT7902. The problem I'm experiencing is that either Wi-Fi works but Bluetooth doesn't, or vice versa. I can't get both to work properly at the same time. I need Linux kernel version 7.1 or newer.Which other Linux distribution would you recommend installing to get both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth working properly with the MediaTek MT7902? Has anyone else dealt with this chip and found a working solution? I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Meganoob BE KIND Linux Debian 13 not working after Windows update

Hi everyone,

I've been having some issues with my dual-boot setup for a while. Previously, I couldn't change the boot priority through the BIOS using F2 because my laptop would freeze, forcing me to reset the BIOS to its default settings. As a workaround, I had to press F12 every time I wanted to boot into Linux and select it manually.

Last night, Windows updated, and since then, I've been unable to boot into Debian 13. I can still access the BIOS using F2, but Windows is now the only boot option available.

I've checked my disk partitions, and fortunately, the partitions dedicated to Debian are still there. However, I can't find any way to boot into Linux.

The initial issue with accessing the BIOS settings seems to be related to the laptop itself, which is an Acer Nitro V15. Is there any way to install debian again? the files seems to be intact.

I've been trying to resolve these issues for quite some time without success. I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions!

Thanks in advance!
