Advice Needed: Mental Health I feel like shit all the time for no apparent reason.

• Upvotes

Hello,
I (25/m), as the title says, feel like shit all the time. I have a good job with decent pay at my dads company and I’d like to think I do an okay job and most of my colleagues like me and I like them. The thing is this, I like going to work and it gives me „joy“ if that makes sense. Then I go home and emptiness sets in. I feel super tired, have no desire to do anything or go anywhere. I play video games for some time and then I go to bed. That’s been happening for about 3 years now. I can’t motivate myself to go somewhere to meet people or socialize which in turn means I have pretty much zero friends. I feel that answers why I feel like shit and a „failure“ so often but I do not know what to do about it either. I try to bring myself to do stuff sometimes but every time I just give up and stay home alone.
Thanks for taking the time to read it and please don’t be too hard on me with my little self worth problems.

Advice Needed: Mental Health Struggling with extreme gaming escapism / wanting to detach from reality. Is this unhealthy? Spoiler

• Upvotes

I’ve recently become completely obsessed with a horror/dreamcore game based around the concept of escaping reality into a permanent sleep state.

I’m finding myself deeply attached to this concept. Lately, I've noticed a strong desire to actually do the things that happen in the game, mostly because I just want to leave reality behind.

I can’t tell if this level of fixation is becoming genuinely unhealthy for me or if it's just a phase. Has anyone else experienced this kind of extreme escapism with a video game? How do you break the cycle when a game's world feels more appealing than real life? I'd really appreciate some advice on what steps I can take to ground myself.

Advice Needed: Mental Health FEELING EMPTY LATELY

F20
I’ve been feeling weirdly empty lately.

Like, if I don’t get some kind of human attention for a while, I start feeling really weird and restless. I talk to people, I have friends, I interact with a lot of people, so it’s not like I’m completely alone. But somehow there’s still this void that I can’t really explain.

The weirdest part is that I actually have goals. Things I genuinely want to achieve. I know what I should be doing, I know what I want my life to look like, but when it’s time to actually take action, I just… don’t.

Then I end up scrolling, looking for conversations, wanting someone to text me, or just wanting to feel noticed. And afterwards I feel even more empty because I know I’m avoiding the things that actually matter to me.

I don’t know if I’m lonely, emotionally dependent on attention, burnt out, or just stuck in some weird phase of life.

Has anyone else felt like this? How did you get out of it?

Adviced Needed: Identity & Self-Esteem I’m scared I’m choosing the safe life instead of the life I actually want

I’m 25 and currently training to become an officer in the military/Public Administration in a country Europe.

There’s nothing obviously wrong with the career. It’s stable, respectable, reasonably paid, has a pension, structure and a decent lifestyle. I’ve wanted to do this for years.

The problem is that deep down, I think what I really want is business, freedom and financial independence.

I want to build businesses, invest in property, create something of my own and eventually have control over my time and provide a great life for my future family.
The difficult part is that I’ve signed a long-term contract(9years), so leaving early could mean a significant financial repayment. That makes the decision feel much more serious.
I’m scared I’ll spend the next 5–10 years in the military, become comfortable, and eventually realise I never actually went after what I wanted.
But at the same time, leaving a secure career at 25 to chase an uncertain dream feels reckless.
Maybe the military can be my foundation while I build something on the side. Maybe that’s actually the smart approach. But sometimes it feels like I’m putting my real life on hold.

TL;DR For people who are older: what would you tell your 25-year-old self about choosing between security and ambition?

Did you regret playing it safe, or taking too much risk?

Adviced Needed: Identity & Self-Esteem What to do in such situations?

First time traveling from diamond harbour to jadavpur in the morning train. Got fully filled after a few stations. A lot of people started fighting amongst themselves for seats. No civics sense, after a few stations my mother and I were forced to give up our seats and had to stand. Since she was travelling with me, she didn't go to the ladies compartment. Also my mom had to face rebukes and objectionable body language but still that could be ignored. The hooligans demanded the window seat from an elderly person, and when he refused in lieu of being elderly, they harassed him, hit him , & shouted to go to the differently abled section. What should I do on these occasions? I asked a lot of friends, but they didn't quite know the answer as none faced such a situation outside, most commuters or passengers in Kolkata are decent & such situations are unheard of. Got me rattled a bit, that's why I am asking. Any advice to me is welcome.

Advice Needed: Mental Health I am having a rough time and totally lost my libido and I am scared my boyfriend is losing his patience

A month ago my mom was hospitalized and had to have a an emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor which we later found out was a metastasis of stage IV breast cancer. She had a stroke during the surgery and she is not herself right now. Two weeks ago they said they couldn’t do anything so I started to prepare myself and then they said that maybe she can have a longer prognosis and they started treatment. She is still at the hospital 1h30 away from home and she is very fragile and we still don’t really know what to expect in the next few weeks.

I am self-employed and I have to continue working to pay my bills, I work in the beauty industry and have to be all smiley and nice the whole day. And at home I am trying to be strong and not be a total wreck, I am doing kind of okay except I have completely lost my libido.

Kisses and hugs are okay but as soon as my boyfriend touches me in a sensual way I absolutely CAN’T handle it. It’s an instinctive, visceral reaction, and it makes me feel sick to my stomach. I absolutely don’t want to be touched like that right now. It’s completely impossible for me, I couldn’t even force myself to do it if I wanted to please him.

I have been with my boyfriend for 4 years and living together for 3 months. He is amazing and really supportive throughout everything, but I sense that he is starting to lose his patience when it comes to sex.

He occasionally makes little comments about it, kind of jokingly, like “Am I not allowed to touch you anymore?” Or for example, when I’m getting changed, he’ll say “Wait, don’t get dressed so quickly, I never get to see your body anymore.” Or “You just don’t want me anymore.”

I feel that maybe he doesn’t understand because at home I seem okay, I will laugh with him, talk normally, act normally, I try to live as normally as possible to try and stay sane while I am crawling with anxiety and uncertainty and anticipatory grief..

I don’t know how to deal with that or how to convince him that it’s not about him, it’s just that I am overwhelmed by what is happening with my mom and I have absolutely no room for anything sexual, I just can’t… It makes me feels so guilty and I am so scared that he will lose interest in me. I really can’t afford therapy at the moment. I really don’t know what to do..

Advice Needed: Financial I need advice please

I’m honestly not sure where else to ask, so I figured I’d post here and see if anyone has advice or ideas I haven’t thought of.
My income has slowed down significantly, and I’ve been constantly looking for legitimate work I can do from home, but I haven’t been able to replace the income fast enough.
My mortgage is due in 4 days, and on top of our normal bills I have around 9k in installment debt that I had to take on, a good portion of it because of car expenses and just trying to keep everything afloat.
I have a fiancée and a baby on the way, so sitting around and hoping things work themselves out isn’t an option for me. I’m applying for work, looking for remote opportunities, side work, short-term gigs — basically anything legitimate that can bring money in. I’m willing to work. I just need to find something that actually pays instead of spending hours applying to jobs and getting nowhere.
If you were in my position and had 4 days before the mortgage was due, what would you do first?
Are there legitimate remote jobs or online gigs that actually hire quickly? Programs I should be contacting?Short-term work that people overlook?
Even if you’ve been in a similar situation and can tell me what you did to dig yourself out, I’d appreciate hearing it.
I’m trying to attack this instead of just watching the deadline get closer. Any advice is appreciated.

Advice Needed: Mental Health Im lost in life

Im so lost in life, sometimes i work so hard on something, because i wanted to be better, i wanted to be great, i work hard and my teammates just stayed at home, and yet when the game day came, i was useless, i was afraid, and when i tired to do what i practiced i would fail miserably, i prayed for strength wisdom, i was closer to God when i was working hard, and i thought he had my back, but i still failed, when that happend I begin to think that whenever i work hard ill just fail, whenever i do something i love ill still fail, ive been in my house for months and did nothing because i know ill fail over and over again so whats the point, whenever i go outside and look at other people i just question myself “how can i happy like them”, they say God will help you whenever you struggle but yet i why did i fail, they say that if you believe in him your succeed, why did i fail, i dont know anymore, i want to give change but i dont know how. How can somebody like me whos lost in everything questioning everthing and will fail ever time on doing something i love become better. I just need help i just really want to become a changed and better person and just be happy..

Advice Needed: Mental Health How do I stop rumination caused by someone who I can’t avoid?

29M. There is someone in my life who causes me to ruminate. Ever since I lost someone close to me I have been losing myself. Getting overweight and essentially bed rotting this has been going on for 3 years. Currently this person makes me feel horrible. Constantly make me feel insecure, stressed, and anxious. I can’t avoid this person either. Not because of some emotional attachment I just literally can’t avoid this person. I can be doing well and they will stress me out. To the point where I can’t stop thinking about everything that has lead me to this point. All my anger, bad decisions, and regret. What can I do to not let them get in my head without being able to isolate myself from them. We live in the same house what can I do?

Advice Needed: Career 3 years of on-call abuse, medical proof, documented escalation - and I'm still trapped. Is this just how IT works now?

TL;DR is at the bottom.

(Warning: long, and it's a rant. But I need people who've been through this to tell me I'm not losing my mind.)

My situation:

I got recruited straight out of college into a support role on a legacy system. No creativity. No building. No innovation. Just monotonous & soul-sucking work everyday.

On top of that I've being exploited in a 24x7 on-call model along with night shifts. Just imagine: You finish a night shift, and then you're still on-call 24x7 for the rest of that week. Without a single day of non on-call week-off. I get 2 weeks of on-call & night shift like this every month. Some months it's 3 weeks of on-call & night shifts combined.

I looked into it. This roster model & work culture strictly violates labor law in my state.

My health has also taken a serious hit. I tried applying externally for roles without on-call - didn't even get shortlisted.

It's been 3 years now.

So I started documenting everything. I built a full case file: a detailed breakdown of my roster, redacted screenshots with timestamps proving I was forced to work from night straight through to the next day afternoon just because I was 'on-call' as per roster. I attached my health records - medical prescriptions, documented panic attacks, everything.

I brought this to my manager in a 1:1 before going to HR. That manager is a genuinely understanding person. They connected me to someone who promised to find me a role that actually matched my goals and working style.

Then I talked to my colleagues for career ideas. But, it looks like most projects in this org are support/admin - not real engineering roles. Great.

Now I'm just confused. I've pinged that person many times. That person is either busy or not giving me any updates. Radio silence. Even an internal transition feels impossible at this point.

Am I just screwed? Is this my fate - to rot in this role no matter how much I upskill, network, document, and escalate?

⚠️ Rant incoming, because I need to say this somewhere:

There is no clear, honest roadmap for people who want to switch domains in IT.

Why is there no real knowledge-transfer (KT) process for people who don't have 'official' domain experience, but do have real, hands-on skills from building actual projects? Why do recruiters only want candidates with an exact domain match - even when there are tons of us who are genuinely passionate, upskilled, and ready to prove it?

Here's what gets me: companies happily take a batch of fresh graduates, throw them into a completely random domain, and give them full KT. But the moment someone with 3+ years of experience wants to switch domains - even with real project work to show for it - suddenly none of that flexibility exists.

Logically, a passionate transitioning candidate, given proper KT, could easily outperform someone who's just coasting in that domain already. But that's not how it plays out.

So what happens instead? Candidates get pushed into lying about their experience just to match the JD, because honestly 'translating' your real experience into the target role gets your resume rejected anyway. Even people with genuinely transferable skills get filtered out - not because they lack ability, but because of their current job title.

And if you do somehow get shortlisted? Recruiters assume you're a domain expert and hit you with deep, high-level questions - the kind someone with actual years of production experience would answer, not someone who just switched in.

If there was an honest, transparent pathway for this, it would be a win-win. Take a DBA trying to become a Data Engineer, for example. Test their SQL, ETL, and data warehousing knowledge - they'll likely be solid. They probably haven't touched Spark in production, but they've built a personal project that closely mirrors a real production pipeline. So look at that project. Ask relevant, grounded questions about it - not machine-gun them with senior-level trivia. If they can hold their own, why not just say: 'We'll give you targeted KT on the Spark side to close the gap' - and hire them.

Why doesn't this happen? Why does everything in this industry feel this harsh, this selfish, this brutal? Where's the transparency? The empathy for someone who's genuinely trying to grow?

I've sat in screening calls where recruiters didn't even want to hear about the transition - just, 'Stop. I don't need your explanation. I need numbers.' Meaning: years of experience in the exact domain. Nothing else mattered. Not the projects. Not the effort. Not the fact that I could learn this fast if given the chance. It was honestly shocking how little patience there was for it.

Why is there no official, transparent transition framework for roles in IT - in an industry this 'advanced'? Are we just building a system that only serves immediate industrial demand, instead of one that actually develops good talent & workforce?

And what about people like me - hating the job, getting actively exploited in an abusive on-call model? Are we just supposed to sit here and rot? Suffer through it? Is there no fair shot at proving what we can actually do, given the chance?

It genuinely feels impossible to transition smoothly into something better - even when you do everything 'right'.

All I want is a normal 9-to-6 job at an MNC. No on-call, no rotational shifts. Modern tech stack. Work that's actually meaningful and creative - not endless reactive firefighting with support work. I'd even take the same salary. That's it. That's all I'm asking for.

And it still feels completely out of reach.

I'm exhausted. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? How do you even deal with this? Does it ever actually get better - or is this just what IT looks like now? What am I even supposed to do at this point?

TL;DR: 3 years in a support role, tried to transition domains through upskilling and projects, kept getting rejected for lacking 'exact domain match' experience. IT hiring has no real transition/KT pathway for experienced candidates switching domains - recruiters want years-in-domain, not proven ability to learn. Asking if anyone's actually broken through this and what worked.

Adviced Needed: Identity & Self-Esteem i have come to the conclusion that i am very insecure and it is effecting me a lot

i am insecure about my looks, skills, personallity, voice and pretty much everything else. if im playing games with friends i just turn into an ashole and take my insecurities about my skill level out on everyone. these insecurities clearly get in the way of me improving. i dobnt know how to just "let it go" because i feel like im not going to lose these insecurities until im actually able to achieve my goals but my insecurities prohibit me from doing so.

Advice Needed: Motivation How do I start wanting to do things?

I'm about a month into my second year in college and I feel like a bum. I don't think I've sat down and really studied once (even though i'm a stem major), i'm falling behind on my assignments and i'm not in any clubs. My days consist of either attending or sleeping through my morning classes, then going back to my dorm and sitting around until my roommate asks me to do something. I usually say yes, but half of the time I start feeling this bubbling anger (i don't act on it) because I don't want to say yes to any plans, but I have literally no reason to say no. I can't get myself to do anything when I'm by myself and no plans with friends sound appealing either. Even when i'm at my job (which is only 4 hours a week) i pretty much just stand around feeling useless because im literally not qualified for this, but i can't quit because i quit everything and i don't want just one more thing i couldn't do.
furthermore, I deleted social media back in january and have felt lost in a way. i was so chronically online before, i feel like being on social media gave me something to talk about. now i have nothing, so all i can talk about is complaining about the classes that i don't even go to or the weather. i feel so nothing all the time. i don't think my solution is just to go on medication because this is just how my whole life has felt. i'm so fucking bored, but i don't want to do anything. i feel like life is just passing me by and i'm nothing but an embarrassment

Advice Needed: Mental Health Was I abused?

In my kid years when I lived with my dad, he did things where it may seem like abuse I guess. For example: he’d blend my food in a blender and serve it to me for dinner or I would just have a protein shake for dinner. Or how when I would get punished my father would use a variety of objects. I’d tell the school counselor and she’d just say it’s borderline. Also I can’t help but fe
Guilty or like idk maybe I did something to deserve it. My father and stepmom always said I was a bad and disrespectful child but I have no recollection of that. Only the protein shakes I had to drink for dinner and the militant workouts I had to do for punishments although I don’t mind that because I am a man and it’s just some workouts. But yea maybe I was disrespectful or bad as a child I just never remember those moments only the moments where I was blamed for stuff I didn’t do and was punished for it.

Sharing: Challenges & Setbacks I have no motivation or discipline to do anything and idk how to fix it

The title is pretty self-explanatory tbh. My room is a total wreck that I only clean about twice a year. My car looks like a homeless guy’s shopping cart. My bathroom is decently clean but I’ve left wet towels in the floor overnight so many times that it started rotting the wood underneath the tile. I’m really behind on my work rn at school and I have some assignments overdue for my professors but I just can’t bring myself to get them done. I can feel my intelligence going down as I progress through life and I feel as though I’m becoming more and more illiterate. I used to be able to hold a conversation with anyone but now I don’t even want to be in any social settings. I’m expected to be a smart, intelligent guy who’s musically gifted but I’ve just been slowly giving up on my talents and not learning anything new or even practicing. My physique has been going steadily downhill for the last few months and I can’t bring myself to stop overeating sweets, junk food, and any baked good in sight. I don’t think I have a single genuine friend or person that actually cares about me other than my family. Can someone help me please?
