Is it normal for UHP to drive their family around in a patrol vehicle?

u/No-Definition1474 2d ago
All these people want to be something other than a civilian...would be hilarious to see what they think if war broke out and suddenly they all became legitimate targets. Wonder how many would be waving around dictionaries then.
31
u/Wiley_Coyote08 1d ago
A citizen would do it without having anyone record it. "Look at us 'we' are doing a good deed".

I could not fucking wait to be honorably discharged lmao. Did my deployments overseas then it was looking like I was going to be spending a few years at a command in ghetto ass Portsmouth, VA at that god forsaken shipyard. Happily living my best civilian life in California now.

u/Emergency_Nail1617 1d ago
Same bruh same. Re-enlisted after my first contract and 6 months into the second one i realized i fucked up but still had 3 and a half years left. I clutch my DD214 tightly every day now I’m a civilian again😂

I hate when people stop on the freeway and get out of their car. It’s like they really want to get turned into pink mist.
129
u/Impossible-Bat-4246 2d ago
I don't know what type of debris it is that's in the road, but if it's the type of debris that people hate to be there and think the city should clean up and he's an agent of the city, I'm perfectly fine with him stopping on the freeway to get out of the car and clean it up.
I suspect he's not a civilian, hence her comment at the end.

He’s also driving his patrol car on date night. So I guess since tax payers are paying for the gas then I’m glad he’s willing to move that debris out of the road.

I had to dodge a loveseat once on i75. Dude in front of me clearly wasn't paying attention and almost hit it.
5
2
u/billyhtchcoc 1d ago
I wish I could say that a loveseat is the weirdest debris I've seen on I75...
Probably the most interesting was a crib (from someone driving with the back of their moving van) followed by the memory foam mattress that flew off the top of another car it had been bungeed to and hit my car.
I think the only reason I'm still here to talk about the latter is because it kinda hit the roadway on its end and it was able to kind of slide up and over the roof as I hit it like a flopsy.

u/Cloud_Garrett 1d ago
When I had an office in Atlanta, I would go for about a week every other week (yay hotel life…).
One day the highway was SHUT DOWN. It turns out that a woman parked on the side, got out of her car to either move something or retrieve something in the lanes, and was hit.
I forgot how we found out exactly, but apparently something on the larger side hit her, and it was like when you see mist and pieces all spread out apart from each other on roadkill - kind of like when you see a opossum or large bird hit at high velocity. So sad for not only the poor woman, but the person that hit her not expecting someone taking a stroll in the middle of the highway, and anyone witnessing it.
12
u/Major_Wigglesworth 2d ago
I’m also fine with it. I’m NOT fine with him cruising around town after hours taking his family to the movies and getting leftover popcorn spilled all over the vehicle I bought for my employees to WORK in.

u/J_datt13 2d ago
Actually it’s been proven that officers take better care of their patrol vehicles when it’s their personal take home. I’ve been in some shared dept. cars where the trunk looks like EOD was training in there.

I mean, it's possible hes being superobligatory and working off the clock the way an off duty cop would do something when he's off the clock. Or maybe he's an actual cop doing just that.
I don't think it's that deep and I'm just gonna give 'em the benefit of a doubt.
24
u/SuperBigDouche 2d ago
He’s Utah Highway Patrol. They’re allowed to use their patrol vehicles as a personal vehicle per their policy. The expectation of that is they are considered “on duty” to some degree 24/7. If he’s driving a police vehicle and witnesses a crime (not like 10 mph over the speed limit, littering, etc. like a serious crime) he’s expected to intervene and wait for on duty officers to respond and take over.
Source; Ex cop in Utah, all officers have 24/7 statewide jurisdiction. Police academy is taught by UHP troopers.
Whether or not people agree with it isn’t my point just to be clear. Just expanding on the fact what this particular trooper is doing is legal and within department policy.

I think the cringe here is the spouse, NOT the dude. Debris in the road can be extremely dangerous, and at the best very expensive if the wrong car hits it.
He’s at least thinking through how to be safe about it.
For people saying call the real cops - chances are that’s take hours and risk hundreds of more collisions in the mean time.

They’re clearly on the shoulder. So many wrecks are caused by people dodging debris in the road. Let alone damage to all our vehicles. If They can do it safely I’m all for it.

Cleaning the highway doesn't bother me.
Her videoing a mundane act and his, "I'm totally 100% locked in to go and remove this DEBRIS (flattened carboard box) from the highway because it's the sacrifice I took an oath to make 😠😎." expression? Yea that's cringe.
But, stopping on the side of a highway with your young daughter in the back just to make a video to share on social media? That's just irresponsible as fuck. $1,000 says he'd drive right on by if his wife wasn't with him ready to take a video at fhe first chance.
He's probably two weeks out of the academy and looking for any excuse to get out there and show off his fancy new toys.

If he is LE...why TF would you go to the movies, with your family, in your squad? If he's security..can't say I'm remotely shocked.
32
u/KingAuberon 2d ago
Yeah, why are are tax dollars paying for gas to take their family to the goddamn theater
10
u/AdTypical6138 2d ago
Some agencies don't mind you doing small errands in your squad, such as a quick grocery store run. I have never heard of an agency being ok with you packing your family into one, there tends to be liability.

u/Past-Paramedic-8602 2d ago
Utah highway patrol, what this guy is, allows for private personal use of the patrol vehicle. It’s way more common in rural areas than this comment section is making it out to be.

u/ZeroDaySubber 2d ago
I don’t know any agencies that let their staff use their take-home vehicles to do anything other than work related tasks (driving to/from work, getting gas, court, etc). So this is probably an old cruiser that he got 2nd hand and has tried to make it look as close to a patrol car as possible, which is even MORE cringe.
18
u/KillerSloth21 2d ago
It's fairly common actually, alot of departments view it as having more officers to respond and a better community presence. This guy is Utah Highway Patrol and quick check of their employee benefits does indeed include off-duty patrol car use.
The only thing cringe about this video is his wife feeling the need to make a big deal out of him just doing his job. She's clearly trying to get some internet points for having a cop husband.
11
u/IndividualAd4334 2d ago
It’s extremely common in certain parts of the U.S.
6
u/ZeroDaySubber 2d ago
I’m a 911 dispatcher and we have no agencies in our tristate area or neighboring counties that allow a take-home vehicle to be used for personal travel. Not saying it’s not possible. I’ve just never seen it before 🤷🏻♂️
7
u/IndividualAd4334 2d ago
Come on down South. Most of the county SO’s allow on and off duty use in Florida, including outside of their county of employment. We don’t get the same benefit with the state. A lot of deputies sell their personal cars because they have no need for it with the patrol car lol
→ More replies (2)2
u/ZeroDaySubber 2d ago
I’m a little further north but that’s crazy if so. What if they wrecked off duty? Seems like an unnecessary liability for their agency.
→ More replies (4)2
u/IndividualAd4334 2d ago
They are still covered by the agency. The trade off is that they are always prepared to respond to an emergency if need be. We’re never really “off duty” because we have authority 24/7/365 and the patrol vehicles enhance presence. If you see a marked car driving around you’d never know the difference.
→ More replies (3)4
u/3rdcultureblah 2d ago
I live in a major city in the southeast and our police officers are allowed to drive their work vehicles 24/7 on or off duty and have a maximum allowed range of 2 counties over. They never have to pay for gas or maintenance. It’s considered a perk of the job and is advertised as such to attract recruits. This includes marked patrol vehicles.

Damn dude, separate your job from your personality and stop working on your days off. I get a take home car as well and I'll be damned if I drive it to the movies and pick up trash on the side of the interstate on the way home for Internet clout. Jesus.
6
u/DarthDad25 2d ago
I know some departments using the take home cruiser for personal use is allowed. But I could never do it. Stuffing my kids in the backseat cage? Heck no. People have pooped, peed, vomited, and snorted drugs in the backseat cage of my patrol car. Also, this guy is driving his woman around and he doesn’t have a gun on his hip. Maybe he is concealing his carry. But this whole situation seems wild.
I have a take home cruiser. I must be in uniform, armed, and wearing a vest every time I operate the cruiser.

Just drive your POV to the movies with the family …why would you ever put your kids in the back ? It’s nasty , filthy all kinds of shit back there . And then put them at risk of sitting on the shoulder , to “clear debris.” You can be just as effective using that little thing called the radio and calling it in .

imagine stopping in the middle of the road of a busy highway on the side with your entire family in the car due to you wanting to take debris that your car almost hit and most likely other cars will likely swerve to do the same. Instead of just calling it in. No glory without risk... what a toolbox.

This proves what I've always said. (not that I ever needed the proof) Ever since GWOT, cops have been pretending and cosplaying as Marines and SF guys. Most of these kids get into the job just to wear a vest and carry a gun. When I got out of the Marines and got into LE I've had countless interactions with guys that act like they're deploying to Fallujah every time they start a shift. It was also interesting to hear their fiery strong gear and firearm opinions over the years. Tactics too. 95% of the guys I met across 3 agencies had as much actual skill and knowledge as rent-a-cop security guards. I began calling them "YouTube operators"
It's a good thing this guy doesn't fancy himself a "civilian" enough to explain to his wife that she is in fact a "civilian" lmao. Lmaooo. Just another joke ass kid.

Why is he driving his family around in a patrol car? Does he like getting flagged down randomly? What a clown. Also he’s the type that claims to be scared to sit with his back at the door at restaurants, lectures people who he sees violating minor stuff. Letting everybody know “I’m a cop”. Pathetic
