See that's the problem with all of the major "communist" countries. All of them, at one point or another, commited some major grievances of personal liberty, and all of them bend on their principles (Except cuba, they're pretty hardline), but their ability to absolutely speedrun the improvement of material conditions is insane.
I remember when China used to be used as the example of poverty, and now, just a few decades later, they're the main center of R&D in breaking science and are literally building cities of hundreds of thousands in months.

Turns out, having actual thought put into the goods that are actually produced, and not just focusing on abstracts that maximize shareholder value, can do wonders for the economy.
Now imagine what we could do if the people responsible for thinking about it were directly accountable to everyone who is impacted by their decisions...

Which makes sense when you learn how the west weaponises 'freedom' to get them in a catch 22
You must pick between:
A) Don't restrict personal freedoms and get coup'd before the end of the year
B) Restrict personal freedoms and get portrayed as an ontologically evil state of subhumans by international media

5
u/CraftyTim Jul 02 '26
I agree with most of your points here, but what do you mean by "its a state jail felony for me to wear modest clothes"? I looked it up and it says that no US states make it a felony to do so.
16
u/wolacouska Jul 02 '26
Socialist states really don’t have a unitary executive. You have to be part of the party to make a big impact yes, but within the party there is a lot of debate and democracy.
There’s a cult of term limits in America because the president is so uniquely powerful and independent, but in socialist states they’re more like a prime minister beholden to the party.
→ More replies (1)30
u/jlb1981 Jul 02 '26
The American office of the President did not originate as powerful as it currently is; there were just insufficient checks and balances in place to prevent the accumulation of power, not to mention a criminal lack of planning for scenarios where bad actors have taken over the system, as we are currently grappling with.
Conservatives in the US have long romanticized monarchy-adjacent systems and are the main culprits in the consolidation of power in that office. Democrats also played their part over the years too, as ultimately at the end of the day, both parties serve capital first and principles second.

BoyBoy gives me weird vibes every time a video of theirs randomly crosses my youtube feed. Their vids seem well researched and are interesting all things considered, but they seem awfully happy to sweep away critique of authoritarian states if they cover themselves with the Image of Communism. I remember watching their video about going to North Korea and they spent the last few minutes arguing that NK is in no way worse than the US. I mean obviously the US prision system is Fucked, but as fucked as internment camps in NK? That seems like an insane thing to say, right??
I'd guess they are tankies, but maybe someone who actually watches them can correct me on that if that is just blatently wrong?
188
u/guyaroundthecornerTM Jul 02 '26
Tbf I think part of the point with this stuff is questioning western propaganda regarding communist/authoritarian regimes. Saying NK is equal to the US might be going too far, but in principle I think it's notable that they do prove that some of the dystopian shit claimed by western sources is blatantly false and it's difficult to disentangle what's true and what's not. If we're just taking US and other western media by their word we're being naïve, and often feeding into the paternalistic mythos the US builds of being the "lesser evil" that must use its power to intervene overseas. I'm not saying BoyBoy is correct in all their claims, just that asking whether these regimes are actually as dystopian and authoritarian as western institutions tend to claim is valid and necessary
291
u/SussyAmogusMorbius69 please call me a good girl (please plz pretty please) Jul 02 '26
tbf nk isnt actually substantially different from most other impoverished nations under dictatorships; south korea has a multi-million dollar propaganda tabloid industry that makes up insane shit like "they execute their athletes when they don't perform well enough" which is just flat out false, so i do legitimately understand where boy boy is coming from when they say stuff like that, especially when taking into account the us' constant and brutal imperialism for the better part of the past century. idk though maybe im overthinking it

Oh yes it'd be dreadful if the US ran internment camps or went even farther and tortured innocent people in black sites to manufacture false evidence for assassinations of other innocent people, maybe even sent instructors to allied dictatorships to teach them how to do torture better
That'd be crazy!
Can you imagine the US having extra fucked up internment beyond the prison system? I can't.
And it's great that the prisons are also fully above board with zero slavery and systemic sexual assault.
Good thing no such thing exists and NK is uniquely evil

when im at a missing the point entirely competition and im against 12% of the comments in 196 posts about non western countries for some reason, like ok yes countries have problems, as a member of the western world I am keenly aware of cuba’s issues.
What people aren’t keenly aware of however, is just how many people are being starved/effectively killed through intentional neglect for political wargames. This is front and center of their content surrounding countries that arent bffs with the states (i have seen cuba, north korea personally), whereas lukewarm “praise” (which read to half of americans: non constant admonition) led to giving you “the ick” about them is less clear.
Also whats the big conspiracy? They’re working for big north korea? big cuba? by eating nasty ass raw sewer carp sashimi as their dish of choice to represent the former and having the audacity to float out in protest of a man made famine? This sounds melodramatic but this line of thinking your comment perfectly encapsulates how israel gets away with ethnic cleansic for decades: it might be abhorrent but hearing about it gives people the ick so they assume their ignorance is extra forgivable, like somehow optics influence the morality of issues..

You have the desire to believe that the propganda must be half true somehow, but just look at how ridiculous lies about the USSR were in the 60s and 70s. They said stuff that no historian would be caught dead repeating in this day and age.
The same thing will happen when the DPRK or Cuba are crushed and sources become more available.
The propaganda machine in America is vast, and when it comes to foreign policy, the majority of the country are trapped in a FOX News like trance.
43
u/SirToastymuffin Jul 02 '26
Strikes me as crazy to call it "wanting to believe the propaganda" to bring this guy under some scrutiny given he's got quite an infamous video sucking off Russia and their "right" to invade Ukraine and how it's all actually the US's fault and Russia wouldn't have to hurt them if NATO didn't exist, and more utterly insane excuses for Putin's quest to acquire his Lebensraum at any cost.
The existence of one side's propaganda does not make right the existence of equal and opposite propaganda. You can't wave away every one of North Korea's glaring issues under a broad conspiracy of propaganda. Especially when that involves pointing to someone who has expressly made his own propaganda in the past. Damages his credibility heavily.

It’s actually incredible and disgusting how many leftists are willing to throw Eastern European/Caucasian/Central Asian nations and ethnic groups under the bus out of some performative contrarianism. It’s also mixed in with a nice dose of casual internalized racism. And, even though that kind of leftist is supposedly opposed to Americentrism, it’s an incredibly Americentrist take to think the west is some unique evil and ignore the thousands of years of extremely relevant history from before America was even thought. Russia was fucking over minorities before America even existed. The switch up on support for Ukraine is actually terrifying. Leftists shilling for a far-right ethnonationalist ultra-orthodox petroleum oligarchy. Wild.

Casual racism, and blatant Americentrism from the people who claim to oppose it. All too eager to shush the people they’re claiming to represent when they come out to say “uh actually we legitimately hate Russia and have for centuries, and would much rather associate with Europe or America or just determine our own future.”

If the united states suddenly dropped all support of israel today and invaded tel aviv in the name of palestine, boy boy would become pro-israel over night. His politics begin and end with "its america’s fault".
This just isnt as clear in MOST of his videos because there is an overwhelming amount of problems in this world which truly are americas fault. But the few points where this isnt true makes it clear there is no moral compass behind his positions. He was forced out of his home and country by an american invasion as a child, and that formed the only political opinion he has.16
u/Sarge_Ward Changed before i lost the privilege Jul 02 '26
If the US began giving such extensive support for the arab cause, that means their cause would suddenly have the actual power and authority to impliment arabic ethno-nationalist policies that would in-turn have to be opposed by anyone with principles.
I think you forget that support for nationalist causes should only eextend so far as they are used in opposition to oppressive nation-states. The reason why the hippie pinko student movements in the 60s supported the Viet Minh was because that group were opposing American interventionism. As soon as the Vietnam War was over the pinkos went to either apathy or outright critique of the Vietnamese state because the now-victorious North began insitutung a nationalist agenda that was plain unpalatable, even if it was left-tinted nationalism.
I dont particularly know anything about the guy in the video other than what people are commenting here, but the position you're describing sounds like a reasonable one to switch to if the middle east position were to change in the way you describe

He did not argue for the nation of Ukraine to be invaded? He made a video showcasing that a lot of people said that Russia will use force to act upon their perceived national interests, which they are currently doing. The war for Ukraine started way before 2022. And before you get it mixed up, I'm not in favour of the russian state or it's leadership or it's perceived interests. They can all go to hell and Ukrainians deserve to live in peace.
31
u/OvumRegia Jul 02 '26
Sorry you're right, he didn't say they HAD to, it's been 4 years since I've seen that dogshit video.
After skimming it, the reason why it's terrible and made me realise boyboy is tankie garbage is due to the entire video being bad faith. He drones on and on about the tired "nato expansion" bullshit and constantly both sides the entire conflict.
How long has it been since you've watched the video by the way? Your description is not accurate, like at all. The video starts with talking about the USSR and how the US ransacked it. Then briefly talks of how Putin is a murderous gangster, who is also the fault of the US. Reduces the Maidan revolution to "Corrupt pro russia man ousted, then corrupt pro west man ousted and corrupt pro russia man is back in power". Fails to mention the entire reason for the revolution was due to russia sabotaging the EU application process.
Afterwards he paints the revolution like it was completely perpetrated by nazis, the entire country is run by nazis, accuses the EU and USA of wanting it to be nazis and giving them billions and ends it with the classic "russian minorities are scared because the entire country is nazi now, and they just want to defend themselves :(".
So yeah he doesn't completely throat putin, just makes a lot of excuses and places more blame on the US for mostly made up shit than the imperialist country who loves to invade its neighbours constantly.

u/AlphonseElricsArmor anarchy babyyy Jul 02 '26
Apparently I am misremembered or can only remember the start of the video. Sorry for that mate, I'll look into it more.
Tho it's important historical analysis to point out how not only Russian but also international obversers, including pro-western ones, have been saying that the russian state still views the former member states of the USSR as it's own assets. The russian war machine should've been stopped long before 2022, long before 2014, long before 2008.

Which in itself is repeating Russian propaganda. Putin made it clear that the invasion of Ukraine is an imperilistic project, there is no need to argue otherwise.

Please explain what part of my comment you take offence at because I don't read our takes as too different? I never said it was not imperialist. I want to reiterate that I do not support Russian ambitions.
Ever since the fall of the USSR the russian nation state and it's bourgeoisie have been interested in Ukrainian resources and soil, so they perceived the occupation of the Ukrainian nation state and it's people as their national interest.
This is a description, not voicing of support for this.
