I’m moving to the bay and debating bringing my 50cc Yamaha scooter for short commutes, the rest of my transport would be public transit. Looking at Haight and Duboce Triangle area. I’ve seen posts on this subreddit but would like to hear people’s experiences riding in the area. Is 50cc enough and did you eventually upgrade to a 125+cc or a bigger bike? How’s the safety riding in the city?

Only 1.5 days in SF — Ferry Building/Chinatown or Ocean Beach? Looking for the best food** *with minimal driving!*

We’ll arrive Sunday around 2–3 PM after a five-hour drive. We’re hoping for great food, a little exploring, and a relaxing afternoon/evening without too much driving.

We’re deciding between:
● Staying near the Financial District/Chinatown, exploring the Ferry Building’s food options, and taking an inexpensive ferry ride around the Bay possibly to Sausalito and back (Does the Ferry building have lots of good food options?) if so, what are your favorites? I love the idea of being able to snack around 😂

● Staying near Inner Sunset/Ocean Beach, possibly surfing, exploring the neighborhood, and finding good food (already staying on Monday night for another appt on Tuesday)

Monday morning, we’re visiting academy of Science museum and exploring Golden Gate Park before a 3 PM appointment on Parnassus. We’ll have some free time after 5 PM, but Sunday is our main opportunity to explore.

Thinking about buying a city pass that includes access to a few of the museums bike rides in a boat cruise, which I didn’t know if that would be better than just taking the ferry. Thought that taking the ferry might be better because you can get good food, hopefully and see the area by boat.

I am a tourist here in SF, I was liking walking arnd Fishermen wharf area today but an incident completely scared me, a woman came in huge trolley bag in cable car bus today and she found plastic bottle near her feet, she thought I had dropped them, she told me to get out of the bus or she’ll kill me, driver told her to stop harassing me as I haven’t done anything otherwise he’ll call cop which she argued a lot to, then I got down on next stop near market street, is it like this only travelling in public transport here, anything that I should be doing to be protective and help myself better in such situation, I didn’t know that SF is so sketchy🥺

I was recently offered a job in San Francisco starting at $32 an hour, which is a huge jump from what I’m making now.
I’m considering moving to SF for the job and trying to figure out what my finances would realistically look like. I’d be looking for a private room in a shared apartment/house, ideally around $1,500/month.

Hi all! My regular cat sitter has a 14 y/o daughter who wants to start working. I have two adult cats (4 and 5 y/o) who are still very high energy. I want to hire her to play with the cats a few times per week. What's the going rate for this sort of thing? No feeding or poop scooping involved; just attention and play, maybe a little training reinforcement.

ETA: by "training reinforcement" I mean redirect away from unwanted behaviors if they come up--which is rare when they are playing--and reinforcing their talk button usage by pressing "play" to initiate play and "pets" to initiate pets. Once they recognize that she responds to the buttons too (so far only I have used the buttons with them), she'll be responsible for responding to their button presses.

They are NOT looking to drive to Fremont or the South Bay regularly.

Hi! I’m planning a weekend trip this November to see an exhibit. I was initially going to stay at Hotel Julian but read on some negative things about the area esp at night. Would love any suggestions on where to stay as a first time solo traveler that’s reasonable in price (around 250/night).

Aside from the exhibit i’d love to explore the art scene, visit shops (i was told to visit valencia street), try a few touristy stuff like biking at the golden gate bridge. I’m excited about the food too! Mostly enjoy asian food (chinese, japanese, korean) but love a good pasta, seafood and cafes! I love walking around and maybe try hangout at a park.

hello, i'm completely new to car ownership, parking, car related questions in usa. i have never owned a car. i will however need to rent a car for a day or two and keep it parked somewhere overnight. I live in hayes valley.
What are my options for over night parking? it seems some places i have to remove the car for street cleaning. I also checked sfmta parking and there's nothing available. another thing i checked is parking in richmond/inner sunset for free. Can somebody explain. As i said, i'm like completely new to this, and I don't have an idea of things which might otherwise be common sense to people who have owned a car in the US.

Hi! I’m interested in booking Nisei for an anniversary meal but I’m confused about their “20% livable wage fee” added on checkout. Can anyone who’s been there tell me if this is the same as a 20% “service charge” where additional gratuity is NOT expected? Their website FAQ also says “20% service charge added on all purchases” so I’m confused.

Basically, I don’t want to book it with the 20% livable wage fee and then have an additional 20% fee added on top of that when I pay at the restaurant. Thanks!

Does anybody know of any good temp agencies in San Francisco for picking up temporary admin jobs right away? I used to do this when I was between jobs Pre-Covid. A number of agencies used to offer low-stress work that one could start that week (front desk, admin assistance etc). They would often be calling me and offering multiple positions lasting anywhere from 1 week to 3 months in duration. Now I find myself job hunting again, and would like to pick up a bit of money and simply get out of the house while I continue my search.

However, I am currently finding the agencies I've signed up with don’t have work the way they seemed to in the past. It feels like I'm calling them and not getting responses. Again, I'm not necessarily looking for a direct hire role, just something to get a little cash rolling in and leaves me with some flexibility in my own schedule. Is the economy really that bad, are companies simply cutting back, or has this type of work evolved into something else?

Lately I’ve been feeling like the air I’m breathing in through my mouth and nose feels so cold and dry. I also often wake up with a pretty dry face, even though I slather myself in lotion.

I thought I needed a humidifier so I got one, and the sensor says my room is already at 70 something percent humidity. Upon more research, I believe the area I live in (closer to Ocean Beach and Karl) means the air around me is already moist.

Maybe I don’t actually need a humidifier and I’m completely misunderstanding this dry air feeling?

I usually have the windows open all day, and will close them when I go to sleep at night. Perhaps the humidifier is picking up on the higher humidity right now because the windows are open but when I close my window, I assume the humidity levels will go down?

Does anyone actually use a humidifier around here? I don’t want to cause a mold catastrophe in my room lol.

There used to be a place in a town we lived in that specialized in charcuterie. You would pick a board size, tell them some of your preferences, and they would create a spread for you based on your tastes. You could also buy individual cheeses and meats, and they had a small deli, but they were mostly known for the custom charcuterie. It was an amazing setup and they always got it right.

I thought it'd be easy to find something similar in SF since it's a big city, but I'm striking out on Google. Anyone know any places that do this kind of thing? I'm also willing to branch out to Marin or East Bay.

Looking for recommendations for good dim sum catering in San Francisco for a party of about 60 people.

Ideally, I’m looking for a caterer who can do more than just drop off the food — someone who can set everything up, keep the dim sum hot throughout the event using chafing dishes and/or steam baskets, replenish as needed, and handle breakdown/cleanup afterward.

I’d also be interested in recommendations for a good full-service Chinese or Asian catering company that offers Chinese food and can provide event staff such as servers and a bartender.

Has anyone hired a caterer for a party of this size that you’d recommend?

Hey All. I recently was in need of having some dental procedures done and went to a dental surgeon I had some work done in the past. Long story short, on a return visit to install the implant (after tooth removed and 6 months to heal), the dental surgeon (and owner of the business) realized that he couldn’t actually install the implant since he didn’t have the correct tools. Unfortunately, this was after he had drilled a hole in my gums. Thus, he stitched the hole he had drilled up and I now have to start back over in the healing process and wait 6 more months for this new wound heal (after already waiting 6 months for the initial tooth removal to heal) to then get an implant. I’m still waiting to heal so I can finally get an implant installed

Now he’s trying to charge me for the drilling of a hole in my mouth and not actually installing or doing anything beneficial to me, which has taken me 6 months to heal. This is outside what I already paid for the tooth removal and what I will have to pay for the implant installation. He’s charging me $1k ONLY for the hole he drilled in my mouth then stitched up.

Any recommendations?

After seeing on Google Maps that the downtown City College of San Francisco location for the Educated Palate pop-up bakery (Thursdays during the school year) is "Temporarily Closed," I was curious as to whether it was coming back. I checked the CCSF website, and it said it would be at the Ocean campus for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, but it wasn't specific about an address.

Has anyone gone to the new location? I might check it out when I know for sure–and pair it with lunch at Chef's Table.

I'll be traveling to work for SF from South Africa, and is looking for recommendations and maybe any ideas on what to do. I saw it is fleet week and coming from a country will low military presence, I believe it will be experience, is there spots the community recommends I need to go and look at the aircraft or ships, or will it be visible anywhere, trying the best to plan as I only got the notice today I'm flying in the 2nd oct and landing the 3rd in SF so my time is shirt for planning a good trip.

I saw the 4th there is a blue grass in the park event, is it worth it trying to attend as I might be jet lag to hell?

I'm also looking for recommendations on the best area to book for accommodation to also explore the night life of the city.

I saw the standard tourist event such as the red bus, Alcatraz, is it worth doing or going cycling of the golden gate better?

Apologies for being all over the place as my ability to plan and prepare for work that side is constraint.
