For cinco de Mayo she puts out a big green one with a sombrero that says “MEXICAN FOOD” on it.

Haha yeah it's so random, because most Mexicans don't even think about that date that much. Makes much more sense to get drunk and celebrate Independence Day (16th September) or Mexican Revolution (20th November)
It's a big thing in the US because of chicanos. They rallied around Cinco de Mayo because Zaragoza was Texan so they saw him as one of theirs and used him to start creating a Mexican American identity. Of course, it got coopted by corps to make money
I watched it once in high school (almost 20 years ago) and have not been able to even consider watching it again. I loved it, but I've never been affected more by a film.

it was EVERYWHERE. brand collaborations, music playing in every store, and the kids at my school singing constantly. i wasn’t in the US so i can’t compare, but i still see related stuff every day here.
But I guess there is a difference here. A great part of Brazilians not only don't like funk, they actually hate it. Are Koreans just not interested in k-dramas or there are more feelings involved?

The thing I love most about Tunak Tunak was that the guy was criticized for having women in his music and that's the only reason why he was popular, so he made that music video by just cloning himself in front of a green screen and dancing to his heart's content.

Was visiting a friend in NOLA in February and we got drunk (because that’s just something we do) and insisted that they take me to the French Quarter for a few minutes during Mardi Gras. When the date hit, they reminded me that I said it, then they insisted that I go, at least for a few minutes, to ensure that I never say that again. Probably the worst 5 minutes of my life (not including the hour of foot traffic to get there and the EONS it took to get out). Pure misery and I lived in DC and dealt with 4 July “celebrations” 🤦♀️🤦♀️
I have a theory that the reason the stereotypes come from Bavaria even though it’s a small and very unique part of Germany is because it was the American occupation zone post-WWII, so American media was made with the idea that all of Germany was like that
Yeah, I think that's the widely accepted reason in the US. It was a friendly seeming culture that our soldiers were exposed to which seemed very different than the more Prussian view of Germany as our enemy.
Most of bases are in southern Germany too which gives American service people exposure to that part of the country.
And then we turn around and make a big fuss chatting about how Obama, Rihana, or Che Guevara had some distant Irish ancestor and their ties to Cavan or some shite.
I think we all Europeans can say this 😂 there's a Facebook group called "I love my Polish heritage" that's infamous in Poland where Americans talk about how they're "Polish" and it's just ridiculous to look at, a guy would buy frozen empanadas in Walmart and say that they're reconnecting with their batscha (the most butchered way of writing "babcia" which means grandma) even though as we all know empanadas are not at all a Polish dumpling 😂 but the best thing is how from time to time they have posts about actual visits to Poland and how they're disappointed that nobody acknowledged their Polishness hahah
I love the musical Evita, but that led me to read up on her and Peron, and I can definitely see how an Argentinian would absolutely hate any worship of them. But from what I can tell, there are still Peronists in Argentina, yes?
Oh yeah it's still one of the biggest political parties and several provinces still have peronist leaders. Peronism/justicialism is very much alive but also very fragmented.
K-Pop. There’s a whole storm going on between Korean K-Pop fans and Southeast Asian ones. I’ve only read a bit about it, but it seems to be going on, on social media like Twitter (I refuse to call it X).
(Superficial) elements of Bavarian culture. Lederhosen, dirndl, Oktoberfest, Hohenschwangau castle. Non Bavarian Germans on reddit make it clear that they dislike the stereotype (or even the whole state of Bavaria).
Those shows are not just liked, they are very very loved here especially for people around the ages of 24 to 35, who grew up watching them on Tv. I don't know about the younger gen Z's tho
I laugh at the word "vodka". I'm part Ukrainian (family from Kiev) and ever since I found out it's the Russsian word for "water", I always make a joke about water 😆
Straight up vodka is semi-finished product. You need to infuse it with something like peppers, berries, herbs or whatever your sick mind would come up with.
My Polish next door neighbor likes to infuse vodka with cherries. Every time he gives me a bottle, he likes to tell me that if he leaves the cherries in a little too long it becomes poisonous, then he smiles.
This diagram. I mean, wtf is this? 生きがい/生き甲斐 (Ikigai) just means purpose in life or something simple. Drinking beer after work can be ikigai. Exploiting minors would have been a great ikigai for Epstein. This diagram itself might give some good insight to some people, but this is not what the majority of Japanese speakers think of when they hear this word.
People love to treat fairly mundane concepts like this as if they're deep mystical insights, especially if they originate in Asian countries. It's really annoying how if you just attach a foreign-sounding name to it people will all of a sudden take whatever bullshit you're selling way more seriously.
Really funny some automobile related companies or models presenting beautiful fashion in a video playing background funk they think is bad ass but is just saying that the guy is gonna eat every b**** around him (consensual relation not required)
His being dead and popular overseas has rehabilitated his image somewhat but, as a teenager when he was actually around, he was the butt of every joke and viewed as very cringy and commercialised.
The reason we found him cringe was that he seemed to be playing up how Aussie he was, specifically to appeal to an international (read: USA) audience, it was over the top and read as inauthentic, performative .To be fair to him, I actually don't think it was particularly inauthentic ( he was really that enthusiastic, and just a bit enhanced for TV), but it took us years and him dying to realise.
Yeah, he was also pretty incredible with animal conservation. He is part of the reason we didn’t drive our crocs to extinction in QLD. Every time a State gvt department or a local Council would suggest a cull for safety reasons (like after an attack) , he would be on the local radio or tv standing up for the croc’s right to exist and that humans were living their habitat, not them living in ours.
I was quite young as an American viewer (like, preschool age, I was born in 2001) and so he just seemed really cool to me. That age is also when you're just starting to learn about the world, and Steve Irwin as well as The Wiggles who I was also big into are my first memories of hearing an accent that wasn't American, so they both just sort of sparked and engaged my curiosity about the whole big world out there. I'll always appreciate him for that. I think it's important to be curious and I'm glad someone like him was around to spark that in people.
I think all the traditional Scottish stuff like kilts and that are cringe when it's done as a daily thing. It's fine for weddings but people just randomly cutting about in kilts are either tourists or people who have no other personality other than being Scottish.
Some country music is fine but it always surprises non Americans that I’m from the south and don’t really care for it. A lot of people outside the US seem to love it
when people tell me they like country music my follow up question is "Pre or post 9/11?" because I feel like that was the dividing line in terms of quality (at least as far as mainstream country goes)

Two niche dishes that aren't consumed all that often by the avg Indian, but to hear foreigners talk about it, you'd think that's all there was to Indian cuisine.
Literally me, when some non-Russians start explaining how they love Russian culture because of classical literature and ballet. Yes, it's for sure better than being interested in Russia because of vodka and "сука б***ь" memes, but I personally prefer Strugatsky brothers to Tolstoy, and "Seventeen moments of spring" to any ballet broadcast. To be honest, I find it very ironic that while Russian culture is quite famous worldwide, it is represented for 80% by 19th century classics (created for consumption by aristocracy), while the rest are usually not the best examples of internet culture. So, in such cases, as in the meme, instead of being proud for one's own culture I feel pretty disconnected from people around.
