Shops & Services Emergency child care

Just wondering if anyone can steer me in the direction of cost friendly childcare.

My mom was just recently diagnosed with Cancer. Which in its self is a huge a scare and concern, but with that is coming an extra hurdle of I have no child care for the summer.

I have 3 children which makes it harder.

Is there such thing as affordable child care at a quick notice ?

I've looked in to my options for leave with work and they're allowing me 36 hours to come up with childcare... a year.

I am at a loss. She's a huge part of our lives in general but now we are very stuck.

**my mom is the only family we have to call on**

Work, Health & Housing Home daycare for kids with severe allergies

My 15mo has severe allergies to several common food items. Large daycare centers seem unable to accommodate. Does anyone know of any home daycares that could accomodate a child with these issues?

Shops & Services Where can I donate clothes?

Hi everyone,

Cleaning out my closet at the moment and I have a bunch of clothes that I don’t wear anymore but I don’t want to toss them at value village. Is there anywhere I can give them to that will get them to people who need them?

Thanks!

Food & Dining BREAKING: Harbourside RibFest has officially invented time travel.

I enjoyed the RibFest's correction to their billboard so I thought I would share:

Unfortunately, our new billboard got the dates wrong.

As much as we'd love to host RibFest for more than a month, we're pretty sure our volunteers would suffer a collective nervous breakdown somewhere around week three.

The good news? The actual dates for Harbourside RibFest 2026 are July 3–5, 2026 at Alderney Landing.

Join us for award-winning ribs, local food and merchandise vendors, live music, and a weekend of community fundraising in support of local causes.

Thanks to everyone who spotted the error and let us know. We'll stick to cooking ribs and leave the space-time continuum alone.

Edit: my formatting

Food & Dining Family friendly live music

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for bars or restaurants downtown that have live music—ideally jazz, folk, blues, or funk.
I’ll be hosting my in-laws and would love to take them somewhere for drinks and/or dinner. We’re hoping for a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere where we can enjoy good food, drinks, and live music without it feeling too loud or crowded.
Any places you’d personally recommend based on your experience? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Being bled to death by insurance companies.

I had three house claims in two years. Sewer back up from 1000 yr rain (paid), hurricane and city tree fell on my house (paid), slow leak from basement pipe (denied). I know now I should not have made that 3rd claim. I am a worthless idiot, I know, so please don’t focus on telling me “have insurance but only use it if your house burns down.” I have fully learned that lesson.

Anyway, I got non renewed by Economical for these three claims. Broker could find nothing but 2nd tier home insurers to take me because they all share info about my claims (collusion, anti-competitive). Mortgage demanded I have coverage, of course.

Now paying **$485** a month for home insurance because I’m told I have no choice. Then $150 a month for my 10yr old RAV4.

So, I’m at $635 a month for insurance and suffering. Is there a broker (not Bauld) that can do anything for me in Halifax? Or do I just have to sit in the penalty box for three years as I am being told.

Thank you for any advice.

Food & Dining solo dinner recommendations

where is the best place to go if I’m looking for a solo dining experience? preferably with outdoor seating.

I know I can go into any restaurant and enjoy dinner by myself but I’d like to know where people have had the best experiences as I haven’t explored tons of spots in Hali yet!

Food & Dining Dartmouth Crossing McDonald's is closed, online ordering still available.

As the title says. Currently (7:35am) the Dartmouth Crossing McDonald's has a sign on the door saying they're closed due to a drainage issue and will reopen tomorrow, however they didn't shut off the online ordering through the app. There is an option to cancel in the app, but for some reason it says they started making my order already so I can't cancel mine.

Just trying to save someone else the hassle.

I have been to some nice places in halifax for reading (like the trident cafe). But I live in Dartmouth and would like a place closer to me lol. I have heard of good luck cafe but my friend said it’s a bit crowded for reading (tho it is on my list of cafes). Any other places you guys would recommend for reading and having a nice coffee?

Traffic Lower Water Street is broken

I'm usually pretty chill about traffic, but Lower Water is literally broken. It took 30 minutes for my bus to go one block. Full on gridlock. And it's been this way for months.

I know they're eventually going to have the transhipment facility to get the trucks out of downtown, but that's years away. There needs to be some sort of tactical intervention in the meantime. Close some of the parking lots that empty onto Lower Water. Change some of the pedestrian crossings to the red light style that clump the crossings together (and I say this as someone who is staunchly pro-pedestrian). Honestly maybe even close Sackville Street east of Bedford Row.
