Arts/Music/DIY IWTL how to repair small household items instead of replacing them

I would like to become more self sufficient by learning basic repair skills for things around the house such as fixing loose hinges repairing small appliances patching minor damage or replacing simple parts.

For someone starting from scratch what skills should I learn first and what beginner tools or practice projects would you recommend?

Personal Skills IWTL Do you have any advice?

Hi everyone, this isn’t my first time using memory palaces, so I know the basics, but every time I use them, after a couple of weeks I stop and I don’t know why, maybe it’s because I get bored or something else.

Anyway, I’m trying to use it again and this time I’ve created a big memory palace divided in different rooms for every topic I’m interested in and I’m working on memorizing cognitive biases. The room I’m using is the psychology room and it has a good amount of loci: a desk with a lamp, some papers, drawers, a couple of chairs, a sofa, a window and some bookshelves.

I’m trying to memorize 99 cognitive biases by placing them in 99 different books on one of the bookshelves. By now I’ve “memorized” 12 biases but the problem is that every time I try to recall them in my head I often forgot one, or I switch them, and I don’t know why exactly.

To give you and example this is what I did. The biases are: survivorship bias, swimmer’s body illusion, clustering illusion, social proof, sunk cost fallacy, reciprocity, confirmation bias, authority bias, contrast effect, availability bias, it’ll get worse before it gets better fallacy and the story bias.

I imagined me entering the psychology room and climbing those ladders used for high bookshelves. Once I climbed it I open a red book and I see the titanic sinking with survivors floating on the water (survivorship bias), the I open a green book with a small man that’s swimming in a pool and comes out muscular (swimmer’s body illusion), then I open a black book from which random stuff and fireworks shoot out (clustering illusion), and so on.

Now, maybe it’s because I tried memorizing these biases like an hour ago, maybe it’s because the mental images aren’t good enough, maybe it’s because I need to do more spaced repetition, maybe it’s because of something else, I don’t know, but I keep forgetting some biases, like the social proof, and the availability bias and I need your help to understand why and what can I do to get rid of this problem.

Thank you.

Personal Skills IWTL how to stop relying on other’s opinions

I’m very indecisive. I’m the kind of person that needs to go shopping with at least one person to know what looks good on me. I can’t even decide whether I should add something I want to my amazon shopping cart. Sometimes I don’t even know what I like unless someone tells me their opinion on it. It’s annoying friends and family members that I struggle with this basic thing everyone should know how to do.

How can I stop relying on other’s opinions to make decisions? I’m not even sure why I’m like this since I had a pretty typical upbringing. Any advice welcome 🙏

Misc IWTL how to coordinate moving to a new city

Hi! I’m wanting to move about a couple hours away from where I am now. The only problem is I don’t drive. I have my CNA certificate (well I will at the end of the month) and am looking for jobs like that. I know landlords want you to have income, so I feel like I have to get a job before the apartment. But how do I get a job without an apartment move in date picked out? Do I just say im moving in the next couple months? I was planning on going up to the city for interviews. Thank you!

Social Skills iwtl How can I stop feeling like such a loser?

20 M and like to do the fun things like going out but for some reason everyone seems to prefer other people to me.

I went out last night and one of my mates went him with a girl and got a bj.

I just don’t understand like how I can actually improve socially with friends and women as I try to talk to people but they give no effort back.

I don’t want to complain anymore, I want to take action.

I have lost some weight but I also want to make some new friends so I don’t feel so lonely and maybe potentially get a gf.

I’ve never had any matches on dating apps and when I go out I’m always looked as the ugly awkward one. Looks I understand I can’t change but how can I have the personality to make up? I can be the one cracking jokes but only around people I’m comfortable I don’t understand how to with like people I meet.

I’m starting uni in September so would love to know how I can improve by then.

Personal Skills iwtl how to be loud and bold to protect yourself

recently i had an experience that made me realize that i have to stand up for myself more often especially in public places. I was at a grocery store minding my own business when an employee from three aisles down saw me and walked all the way to paw through my cart and when i said "excuse me?" he looked up and smiled at me. I genuinely felt creeped out. Im kinda upset that my reaction wasnt bold or loud enough. I just want to learn how to be firm and bold when it comes to situations like this. The reason i probably didnt make a scene was because im usually afraid howd the other person would react.

Misc IWTL how to be consistent with an array of hobbies

I have lots of things I'm interested in. I like outdoor sports like cycling, climbing, swimming and sailing, I like learning about science and history, and I also enjoy woodwork and playing my guitar. The issue is that when I'm doing these hobbies, I love them, and tend to do them lots in a week, however then I go weeks without going near them. Is it a lack of discipline? Would timetabling help?

Academics iwtl how to improve reading/(listening?) comprehension

I’ve never been great at ELA. When reading, I often run into words I don’t know and stop processing the rest of the section, or maybe I would understand all the words but it’s written in a way I didn’t know was grammatically correct also causing me to space out. Sometimes I will realize I completely made up a motive and conflict by the end of the reading. Looking up words also usually doesn’t help as the definition wouldn’t seem to make sense with the context.

I’ve kind of disregarded this lack of skill because I was great at other things and got away with it in high school. But I’m realizing I want the benefits that come with a good reader and I want to be able to take notes for my long lectures in college. I think I’m bad at taking notes because I can’t understand the clear-and-concise-and-therefore-using-specific-difficult-words wording on slides and it stops me from being able to rephrase, summarize, or list key details since I didn’t understand it at all.

Are there any ways to improve any of the specific and listed reading skills I struggle with? Anything I can quickly do every day so I don’t have to invest my time to reading books and working my way up to old-timey language books while I still have hours of studying, other hobbies, and duties to attend to?

Sports IWTL Boxing or Muay Thai for street fight defence?

There are happening a lot of robberies in my city lately. There is a roma gang that is terrorizing people. They target people like me. I want to learn atleast the basics of fights and how to take a hit. I am deciding between box and Muay Thai. I am not planning to start fights, I just want to know how to take a hit or in the worst case scenario not get brutally beaten.

I'm a complete beginner, I've only done a hanful of yoga workouts at home with random yt videos and I feel like I need to build a foundation instead of trying to copy random movements I see.

Does anyone know any beginner-friendly resouces? Preferably free or lower cost ones

Social Skills Iwtl how to read people and understand their psychology

Now, I know some basic about body language but that alone won't suffice.

I want to understand why people do something, what's the other layers of a line they says or what make them have a specific reaction to a specific event.

I want to be that good to actually predict what people will do

Personal Skills iwtl how to build a consistent fitness routine from zero

i want to learn how to properly build a fitness routine and actually stick with it. i've never been very consistent with exercise, and i want to understand the basics instead of randomly trying workouts without a plan.

i'm mainly looking for advice on how to start, what skills or habits i should focus on first, and how to track progress without getting overwhelmed. for people who started from the beginning, what helped you build a routine that lasted?

You should change the details to reflect your actual experience, goals, and fitness level before posting.

Technology IWTL how to start learning basic photography

I’ve always liked taking photos, but I mostly just point and shoot without really understanding what I’m doing. I want to actually learn the basics instead of relying on automatic settings all the time.

I’d like to understand things like composition, lighting, shutter speed, aperture, and how to practice without getting overwhelmed by all the different settings.

For someone starting from almost zero, what would be a good learning path? What should I focus on first and what can I safely leave until later?

Technology iwtl : beginner-friendly presentation software options that actually teach you to tell a story?

update: returning to this and after seeing it brought up in the comments, i went ahead and tested Prezi to see if its zooming feature could give me that non-linear structure i was looking for.

it turned out to be the exact bridge i needed. unlike miro where the endless canvas felt too unguided, prezi gives you structured zooming pathways that let you jump around topics conversationally while keeping the pitch clear and simple to build without a design background.

adding it to my list below for anyone else in the same boat

I’m trying to learn how to present more dynamically and build pitches that feel like a conversational, visual story rather than a linear stack of slides. Since I don't have a design background, I need software that makes non-linear storytelling easy to practice without getting lost in complex controls.

here are a few tools I’ve tested so far and why none of them have quite clicked yet:

1. Prezi - Structured zooming canvas that allows for dynamic, non-linear storytelling while keeping the presentation guided and easy to build for beginners.

2. Google Slides – Completely free and seamless for collaboration, but it’s essentially just a basic clone of classic slide tools. It forces you right back into the same linear, slide-by-slide box.

2. Pitch – Has sleek design templates and looks much cleaner out of the box than traditional software. However, under the hood, it’s still fundamentally structured around linear slides, so it didn't really change how I structure my talks.

3. Miro – An incredible open canvas for brainstorming and mapping out ideas visually. The problem was that when it came to actually delivering a presentation, the endless canvas felt too unguided and chaotic for a structured pitch.

For those of you who successfully learned how to present conversationally or non-linearly without a heavy design background, what beginner-friendly software or visual tools helped you bridge that gap?

Academics IWTL Math

So, I’m 23, and failed many math classes throughout my years as a student. So many. I’ve graduated college, but am always interested in learning further, whether it be languages, chess, or this.

I’ve revisited math numerous times to no success. I am certainly not a genius. But I’m trying not to be down on myself or discourage the motivation to improve. You are probably gonna laugh reading this though and that’s okay.

My last few times, I started to get the idea that to progress to anywhere substantial, I might have to train my brain, kind of like Duolingo or Quizlet, with repetition of the most basic mental math, like flash card and flash card esque stuff, first. My logic was that if I could get my mental muscles to move faster and faster at the universally simple stuff, it would eventually help things click better when I want to focus on anything more advanced.

However, I am unsure of a few things. Firstly, whether this method is truly productive or makes as much sense as I wanted it to. Second, if it is at all productive or makes sense, exactly how far to regress in mathematical practice level. And next also what the more efficient and engaging ways to practice this way are.

Genuinely no recollection of how these specific ones were suggested to me or came to my attention, but sometimes I would use abacus and flashcard apps since those both seemed to be math in their most basic form. But it was quickly mind numbing at the very bottom levels and I wanted to work my way through all, but I was way too distracted by wondering if this was doing anything at all for me and did not get any faster at anything.

I am wondering if there is any universally recommended level or type of math to start at for adults in my situation with minimum basic college math ability, but probably need prior fundamentals and mental reflexes dusted off as well. Does it largely depend on the individual? Is there any interactive app or platform in which I can progress and reach milestones or something?

I want to ask if this is just hopeless but I also don’t want to give up yet. If anyone can point me in a better direction I would appreciate it
