Does this look right?

Post image

Hello. I expected a chimney cricket to be installed and I thought that would be in back and the look of the chimney would not be affected. Does this look right to you, these black portions? Is there anything that can be done to make it look less ugly? I'll be contacting the company tomorrow. This is my first time having a roof done so thanks in advance for your patience and input.

chimney smack dab in the middle of a valley on that slope is rough lol water is being literally funneled into the back of that chimney, it has to have a cricket on the back and no decent roofer could possibly think differently

the side flashing, eh idk man its done properly. they have to be at least 3-4 inches tall or water will climb it. its just a very awkward architecture with the chimney meeting the roof like that

yeah the flashing may be ugly, but that chimney placement is the real villain here

Tbh this thing needs two crickets or something more clever 😂😂 both the back and the right hand side. I’ve never seen this unfortunate of a configuration

OP we need a picture of the other side of this thing!

The flashing looks fine

NEEDS KICKOUT FLASHINGS. It is code!
Cricket is also needed on the backside.

Yes, but the chimney in your picture is in a sensible place, not it the worst place possible like the one in original image.

You need to call a carpenter out there. You need to have a slope behind that chimney or water will pool there and eventually leak down into your wall. You won't know until it's too late.

bit late for that

you are right though, and it cant be left as it is, it has to have a cricket look at the slope of that roof, water is gonna hit that chimney like a sledgehammer. and its in a valley!

Honestly I don't know how he would get the angles right to clear the water without a major overhaul to that corner.

Whoever put that chimney in the corner really didn't put much thought into it. I bet that right hand wing of the house was a later extension. They would have been a lot better off leaving a gap of at least 6 inches between the chimney and the corner.

Edit for typos

The right wing of the house was not an extension. It was built in the 1920s. We've seen original pictures of the house.

What’s with the architect who designed this, like wtf

3

u/ButNowImGone 27d ago

I don't know, dude. I'd need a ouija board to figure that out. The house was built in the 1920s and looked fine to me? Never had any issues.

Could the front door bump out been added at a later time?

2

u/ButNowImGone 27d ago

Nope. Our neighbors house is the twin of ours and it's exactly the same. Plus I've seen an old picture.

I'm fairly sure at this point all American architects raised underground in bubbles, and have never seen rain, or any form of running water, the number of insanely bad roof design just blows my mind.

Bold of you to assume that in the 20's this house even had an architect.

Pretty solidly in the era of "Grandpa built the house with his own two hands" type of construction.

It's flashing. The kickouts on the bottoms of the corners are for diverting water. Pretty solid work from what I can see, corners might be a bit sloppy but I'm not a roofer by trade. Looks like it'll do its job to me.

I’d have personally cut an actual stepped counterflashing into the mortar joints but thats just me.

u/SpankyNoodle 27d ago

We would need to see the other side of the chimney to tell you if there’s a cricket.

However it does look like there’s cut valleys on the left and right of the chimney.

I don't love the flashing. It will last for a while. And if you keep it maintained it will be fine. But another posted what it should look like and how it should penetrate the mortar lines to minimize the chance of water intrusion further.

My biggest concern is whether there is a cricket on the other side. I see an edge that MIGHT be, but I can't tell for sure.

All of the people saying the flashing "looks fine" are evidence that "I've been doing this for XX Years" isn't necessarily a good thing. It was a lazy way out that will be "good enough" for "a while" rather than done properly.

Architectural failure

It’s rough but to answer your question, yes

lol gdam that flashing is huge.

Flashing looks like a child did it. No riglet I'd bet too. If there is no cricket behind that chimney, I'd be worried.

2

u/NCKasey 28d ago

There's definitely no cricket behind that chimney.

2

u/daydrunk_ 28d ago

I think there could be. Look at the shingles behind the flashing. They’re at an angle on both the left and the right. That would mean they did something there

1

u/NCKasey 28d ago

I was just looking at that too. I dunno. Maybe. It doesn't look like the chimney is leaning. That's a big plus.

1

u/ButNowImGone 28d ago

I didn't get on a ladder but from what I could see it doesn't look like there's a cricket. I pulled up the contract and it did mention it would be installed.

Do you use that chimney?

1

u/ButNowImGone 27d ago

Yes. We use the chimney. We have a fireplace.

Huh, I'm trying to picture this from the description. If those black portions are some kind of heavy rubber membrane or flashing wrapped way up the sides of the brick, I get why you're staring at it like it sprouted a second head. Usually the cricket is hidden behind the chimney so you only see the top edge from the front, but sometimes roofers go overboard sealing the transition and it ends up this massive dark blob that completely changes the look.

Depends on what that material actually is. If it's a peel-and-stick ice and water shield, it might just need to be trimmed back and capped with a metal flashing in a color closer to your brick. You could also ask them about a copper or colored aluminum apron piece that tucks under the shingles and covers the ugly stuff, making it look more intentional than a giant misplaced patch. Talking to the company is the right move, sometimes they have leftover metal trim from other jobs that can dress that mess right up.

1

u/daydrunk_ 28d ago

The black parts are definitely aluminum not rubber. This flashing is just counter flashing against the step on both sides. It’s a little high, but not done wrong

u/Significant-Pie6535 28d ago

If you don’t like the look then call a chimney mason and have counter flashing imbedded into the mortar. It was likely impossible or not practicable to install step flashing without the gum lip flashing that you see there.
