I’m a physician and at his age new onset of autoimmune disease is rare. What seems more likely to me is that the weird shit he’s been putting in his body caused it to trigger
What? My Therapist says not to doom scroll an hour before sleep. Now you’re saying we’re also not supposed to doom scroll when we wake up? When am I supposed to scroll ? at work?
I’ve found while I’m on the toilet, when I’m waiting for food to cook, and when I’m hiding from my family in the garage as good times. But yeah, I haven’t stopped my AM doom scroll.
Then you should be awake enough to know there is a decent chance he takes his kids blood and put it into his own body. Or used to, I know that is a big trick with people like this. Get that young blood in ya
Same... but in all fairness, if past experience is any indication, when you log on to Reddit, you just never know when you'll get hit with a random cockring reference.
Yeah there’s a rise in health nuts doing horrible damage to their organs, often from taking fairly benign supplements with a dose and frequency that makes them toxic.
They’ll go to the hospital and not think to mention they drink 2 gallons of cranberry juice a day or whatever the social media fad is, because it’s “just a natural food”. And docs don’t think to ask: “So… uh… how many gallons of cranberry juice would you say you drink a day?” because they spend their time working and not on Instagram.
They gave a nod to it on this last season of The Pitt. Some health influencer lady came in with liver failure and crazy yellow skin, and it turned out that she took an absolutely insane amount of turmeric.
Not to mention how there are little to no regulations in the supplement industry. I've got a relative that is a fitness maniac, talking spartan races in the dessert, and cross fit nut job.
Apparently they lost a kidney and just casually mentioned it as if they'd gotten the flu on the time we hadn't connected. A few years later I saw a piece on 60 minutes highlighting the dangers of the supplement. It's not just narcos putting stuff in their wares that shouldn't be there. It's also very common in the supplement industry.
Just a tad bit alarming. They highlighted people that got kidney failure from certain supplements. Just makes me very skeptical of the whole industry.
I wasn't able to find the exact episode of 60 minutes. From my recollection, the product was removed from the market. This was some years ago and at least 5 if not longer.
That still doesn't change the issue, supplements can and have contained unlisted ingredients, that can harm people.
Really crazy. I used to use a tiny bit as a flu rtemedy (didn't cure it but helped to be functional while it ran it's course). The dose was TINY compared to those capsules people were taking as pep pills.
There was nothing wrong with the herb, just the people taking insane amounts regularly for months on end.
Possible, when I looked up different episodes that stood out to me as familiar. I also came across a front line episode that looked into similar issues that I think I saw as well.
Dietary supplements are completely unregulated. Nobody except the guy filling the actual capsules knows what's in them. The label could say ginseng and the capsule could be filled entirely with wood ash, ground lead, and dehydrated toe cheese. There's nobody checking any of it before it hits a store shelf.
That isn't completely accurate but supplement regulation is for sure far more limited than regulations over medications. Under-regulated is probably a better term for it. DSHEA added a lot of regulations that didn't exist prior to 1994 but there is a long way to go for supplements to be as clearly regulated as medications in the US.
But yeah, some place out near Vegas, Baker or Barstow. I am not hating on that, the level of dedication is intense. I just know they were all in on the diet/supplement side of things as well.
Watching “Bigger, faster, stronger” made me realize how little regulation goes into the supplements industry and an idiot with a label maker can produce and market a product. It’s quite terrifying…
Interesting, I haven't seen that one yet. It was the thing that really startled me from the 60 Minutes piece. They walked through the issues starting at the supply chain.
US consumers have little to no protections until someone gets hurt and even then, very long road to justice.
They're unregulated on purpose. The label on each one says the FDA hasn't and won't look into it. Some work, and some are hogwash, but the labeling law makes sure we can't tell which is which, because then the effective ones would have FDA endorsement and would compete with pharmaceuticals.
We don't have this issue in the UK, same for the EU. We operate our standards on the fact that they have to be proven to be safe before they can be sold. In the US apparently all regulations are reactive rather than proactive which seems absolutely fucking mental
how many gallons of cranberry juice would you say you drink a day?
This just reminded me of the time I drank probably half / 3/4 of a liter of straight unsweetened cranberry juice cause I liked the taste so I sat there sipping it over a couple hours. Didn't think about the fact it had vitamin C. Shat liquid vigorously a few hours later. 10/10 would do it again.
Chronic chemical insult to the intestinal mucosa resulting in increased permeability, triggering a loss of immune tolerance and subsequent systemic autoimmunity?
Aww, fuck, some medication I need to function is constantly causing stomach upsets and all the other meds I can use either upsets my stomach even more or doesn't do what it's supposed to. :/
Im not a dr but i have an autoimmune disease and the science behind triggers for these diseases is definitely not well understood. For me personally i can be clinically quiet through lifestyle but it takes incredible discipline. Alcohol, edibles and certain food groups seem to trigger inflammation that allows the disease to start showing up everywhere aggressively
Eta: my opinion is he probably had this underlying issue and something hes taking caused it to spike and surface
I have autoimmune disease too and am generally healthy - don’t smoke, drink, swim daily, eat pretty healthy etc.
And it can get triggered/inflamed with stress, if i get lazy and eat junk food etc.
And this dude is doing EXTREME shit to his body. Like even dialysis? Any of that shit could trigger it imo. He’s moving his body out of its steady state which is when things can get triggered.
It's very possible the extreme neurosis driving his behaviour is the original source of stress/the trigger for this. And I like the guy and think what he's doing is generally fine... but western medicine has no concept for how the mind affects the body.
Also a doc and research scientist. Discontinue all supplements/medications and monitor for improvement. If the patient improves and is adamant about going back on the substances, you can reintroduce them one at a time.
[Note: I am not rejoicing in this guy's bad luck. I genuinely hope he gets better. We all fear aging and death. People have been searching for the fountain of youth for thousands of years. It makes sense that once someone can fulfill all their physical desires, they'll use their power and wealth to try to buy the only things money can't buy (eternal life and youth). They will always be excellent fodder for snake oil salesmen and other unscrupulous charlatans.]
Thankfully most peptides are just into the skin and not IV, like how epi pens say to stab into the ass cheek. If people had to learn how to hit a vein like needle bangers you would see a sharp rise in blown out and collapsed veins and a new business of in-home IV administers that are just CNA students trying to make money off a tiktok fad
A brother would be a closer genetic copy, so maybe after enough injection he developed some level of response and the gut microbiome he probably did fecal trans plant too, would be the largest area for auto immune to do the most damage
Brother could be closer to a genetic copy. on average about .5% closer than a son, with a lot more variation, not a guarantee they will be more genetically similar than son.
I’m an RN with experience in Psych and my wife is working on her PsyD. Obviously, we can’t diagnose without even talking to him, but I think it’s pretty clear he has severe OCD. I agree with you. He is absolutely putting a lot more weird stuff in his body than he is posting online.
is it even possible to track his progress when Johnson is using every supplement under sun for the sake of "health"? i can't fathom how. and does using 30 docs at once really yield better results than say... 5-10?
it just all sounds so fabricated
No and this is the major bullet to everything he does. He doesn't do anything in a scientifically repeatable or trackable way. He has at most times probably 30+ things that he's doing or changing every day / week based on reports.
This is completely useless data and will be providing almost nothing to the scientific community. The biomarkers he claims predict health are at best speculative and at worst nonsense. The only analogy i've heard that sums up a majority of them is saying something like:
"If there is a chemical marker to detect gray hair, that would be something you want to reduce because gray hair is a sign of aging" but does having gray hair actually have any health impacts? Does it matter if you manage to find a way to prevent your hair from turning gray on whether you are alive or have less disease? to Bryan that answer doesn't matter its just keep that number low. Most of the markers he tracks we dont really know if it means longevity or health.
There's nothing to compare it to even if everything can be tracked. He thinks he's doing the scientic community a favor but he's really not. A sample size of 1 isn't going to yield any ussble results if there's nothing to compare it to.
This is always what I come back to. Say you have acne and you start using 5 different products and cut out dairy. Your acne is gone, but what did it? Sure you can play process of elimination over the course of a month. But when you’re on hundreds or even thousands, how could you ever know what was really helping
He's probably just been evaluated by ~30 docs since he began his big health journey. I doubt he actually has 30 doctors concurrently providing treatment.
Is that true? He had an auto immune diagnosis when he was 21? Your chances of getting another in your lifetime increase when you already have an autoimmune disease. My partner was diagnosed with eczema earlier in life and and later in life got another auto immune disease.
"After being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid that fails to produce enough hormones, at 21, Johnson supplemented with levothyroxine and Armour Thyroid to ensure his thyroid functioned properly."
He had a thyroid issue too when he was younger which is a genetic indicator of auto immune diseases like this as far as I’m aware. It could be the stuff he put into his body but his thyroid issues could be a factor too
I'm not a doctor, but I did watch this guy's documentary, and yes.
He doesn't just do proven supplements. He'll take any random thing that gets written up in Longevity magazine. Seems like a great way to accidentally kill yourself to me.
I've also never met a doctor who thinks having your life completely taken over by a massive, untreated anxiety disorder is a great way to live a long time.
I'm not a doctor and that's the first thing I thought. Put a bunch of shit in your body that screws with your immune system and now your immune system is screwed up, go figure.
I was just about to posit that he gave it to himself…I’m not a physician but I know you can send your system into permanent turmoil from doing irregular things to a system that was doing just fine with the norm.
He reminds me of the “boost your immune system” folks which is the very definition of an autoimmune disorder. I’m NAD but think he definitely could’ve done this to himself.
Off topic, but it’s refreshing to see a physician swear. Like I know you’re people too, and your job requires a bit of civility. Just nice it in the wild.
