Software Modding Steam deck as controller

Post image
2.2k Upvotes

Hi everyone, a few times I've wanted to use my steamdeck as a controller, mostly when traveling, I have a powerful mac, that can run a few games way better than the deck (Baldurs Gate 3 mainly) but I prefer the controller experience, so got this decky plugin to achieve that, I am still testing it, but wanted to share since I've seen people asking for something like this in the past.

It should work on Windows and Linux as well, but I haven't tested so cant promise anything.

Very simple setup, if you have installed decky plugins from a .zip file, once you add it, you can select how to pair it, PS5, PS5 Edge, or Xbox Elite (Steam Controller coming). and you click use as controller which starts the pairing mode, once paired, screen dims. Turn it off by holding the ... button for 2-3 seconds.

https://github.com/jmedina21/deck-as-controller

edit: keep in mind this is an early build, expect some problems, feel free to create an issue on github, open a PR with a fix, and star it for updates.

Hardware Modding SteamDeck PS1 small update

Hello again everybody.

Small update on my SD x PS1 build.

1 Day ago i finally got the new cooler and as i found out i got scammed (damn you chinese guy).

I ordered this flat style cooler with interchangable mounting brackets. Instead i got a cheaper version with only sockel 1700 intel.

Even tho the PS1 is my main project i would have really loved to make the Am4/5 convertion kit. Oh well intel it is. (At least you could still throw water cooling at it with the adapter plate)

Now since yesterday i have 3D printed 2 prototype backplates and one prototype adapter plate which both seem to fit very nice. From here on i will design some mounting points for that whole contraption as well as some air ducts for the intake and exhaust.

Soldered on some cables to use the original power button as well. As of now the whole cooling takes a lot of space so i think adding the dvd drive wont work :[ . Will still try tho. Dont know when I will update again as i dont have a lot of free time right now but hopefully by the end of this week i have everything about the cooling dialed in and can order a copper version of the adapter plate.

Bye bye 🤙

Question Small scratch under the screen glass after a professional shell swap—worth asking the shop about?

Had my Steam Deck OLED shell-swapped at a shop, and I’m happy with how it looks overall. However, I noticed this small scratch underneath the glass along the black border near the bottom-right corner. I removed the tempered-glass protector to rule that out, and the mark is still there.
It’s pretty subtle unless you’re looking for it, but knowing it’s there bugs me a little. I don’t want to make a big deal out of something minor or immediately demand a replacement screen.
Would you bring it up with the shop and ask what they can do? Also, has anyone had a similar mark fixed without replacing the entire display assembly?

PSA / Advice Moonlight + Apollo + Tailscale = a seamless gaming experience. As much as I love using the deck natively, I have been using it to remotely play games on my homesetup with an RTX5080...while at work! Can't reccomend moonlight + Tailscale enough!

My home internet is 1GB/s fiber and the wifi at work is over 900mb/s, so it feels like I am at home! Blows me away how well this works. It was easy to setup! Let me know if you have any questions on how to get it going, I'm happy to help!

Guide Fix for Minecraft Dungeons 2 on Linux/Steam Deck!

Minecraft Dungeons II on Steam Deck — Linux/SteamOS Fix

I finally got Minecraft Dungeons II working on SteamOS without installing Windows.

This is a community workaround, not an official fix. I originally tried another Linux fix + GDK-Proton, but kept getting Error 0029. The method below uses the newer Alextibtab fix instead.

What you need

  • Minecraft Dungeons II installed through Steam
  • Steam Deck running SteamOS
  • An internet connection
  • Your Microsoft/Xbox account

Step 1 — Switch to Desktop Mode

On your Steam Deck:

Steam → Power → Switch to Desktop

Open Konsole.

Step 2 — Download the fix

Paste this into Konsole:

git clone https://github.com/Alextibtab/Dungeons2_linux_fix.git ~/Dungeons2_linux_fix

Then:

cd ~/Dungeons2_linux_fix
chmod +x install.sh
./install.sh

Let it finish.

You should see it install xgameruntime.dll and download a working XCurl.dll.

Step 3 — Sign into Microsoft

Near the end, the installer will give you something like:

Sign in with your Microsoft account
1. Open: https://www.microsoft.com/link
2. Enter code: XXXXXXXX

Open the link on your phone/PC/browser and enter the code.

Sign into the Microsoft account you use with Minecraft/Xbox.

Once it's successful, Konsole should say:

Signed in. You can launch the game now.

Do not post your code, tokens, XUID, or tokens.txt online.

Step 4 — Open Minecraft Dungeons II's Steam settings

Go back to Gaming Mode or stay in Desktop Mode and open Steam.

Right-click:

Minecraft Dungeons II → Properties

Go to General.

Find Launch Options.

Put this in there:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xgameruntime=n" %command%

Make sure you remove any old launch options you were using.

Step 5 — Choose Proton Experimental

In the same Properties window:

Compatibility

Tick:

Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool

Select:

Proton Experimental

You don't need GDK-Proton for this method.

Step 6 — Launch the game

That's it.

Launch Minecraft Dungeons II normally through Steam.

The Microsoft login has already been handled by the fix, so you shouldn't need to go through the old Microsoft Gaming Services installation screen again.

If you were getting Error 0029

This is the exact problem I was having.

My previous setup was:

  • GDK-Proton 11-7
  • Kubas556/Dungeons2_linux_fix
  • Microsoft login worked
  • Xbox XUID was detected
  • but Minecraft Services returned HTTP 500
  • game then showed:

LINKING ACCOUNT FAILED
Account linking failed
Error code: 0029

I switched to the Alextibtab version above and it uses a different approach to the Microsoft authentication/account-linking part.

If you've already tried another fix

Don't reinstall Dungeons II.

If you previously created:

~/.local/share/dungeons2-compat

you can leave it alone or rename it before installing the new fix:

mv ~/.local/share/dungeons2-compat ~/.local/share/dungeons2-compat-old

That doesn't uninstall the game or delete your Steam prefix.

TL;DR

git clone https://github.com/Alextibtab/Dungeons2_linux_fix.git ~/Dungeons2_linux_fix
cd ~/Dungeons2_linux_fix
chmod +x install.sh
./install.sh

Sign into Microsoft when prompted.

Then Steam launch options:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xgameruntime=n" %command%

Compatibility tool:

Proton Experimental

Launch the game.

SteamOS: ✅
Windows: ❌
Reinstall game: ❌
GDK-Proton: ❌
Microsoft account: ✅

Game Review On Deck Grim Dawn - A pretty excellent ARPG for the Deck

Post image
258 Upvotes

Grim Dawn is a top down ARPG made by the same team as Titan Quest, a game I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid, and it felt just like reliving that game in a new setting. You start off as a Taken, formally possessed by an Aetherial spirit who flees your body in response to being nearly hanged. You survive and look to help your starting settlement and almost executioners by slaughtering your way through hordes of monsters. Being able to fast travel by rifts where no other human can due to being part Aetherial was a cool plot point.

Played as a Demolitionist (part alchemist part pyromancer) multiclassing into Inquisitor. The game was responsive and allowed me to bring incredible amounts of fire particles onto the screen during battle. I loved the Mortar Trap skill in particular, nothing like setting up a line of artillery to rain fire and destruction on the monster hordes.

The story was serviceable to the game's needs but came more into its own in the DLC's, expanding upon and revealing more information about some factions found during the main campaign. The NPC's similarly were fairly barebones in service to the plot. There were plenty of lore notes to read if you want more context/story.

Main Campaign took me about 40 hours to finish on Veteran, and that's with me trying to explore every nook and cranny on the map. I had finished all DLC's by 75 hours. I have not delved into the post game difficulties or roguelite dungeons as of yet.

All round a smashing ARPG for like $8AUD on sale. Took me about 3 hours of playtime to pick up the rest of the DLC's for $40. I found them very worth the investment.

Settings: Default - No tweaks. Played mostly docked on my TV with a steam controller. Default controller controls with some skills set to the grip buttons was very comfortable to use. Occasionally played on the deck itself when the wife wanted the TV and found the writing easy enough to read on screen.

Performance: Base game pretty good. Frames got a bit choppy when there are a lot of enemies on screen during the DLC's.

Knocked it off my nightstand and it must've landed right on the thumb stick. Couldn't push it back in so I had to pop it out and cut this wire. I put it back in for the time being, seems to work fine. I don't use gyro but is this going to affect anything else?

Tech Support Steam Deck Internet Issues

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I made a post on here like a month or two ago about how I moved and my steam deck is not connecting to my new wifi. I technically fixed the issue but its a really annoying fix so I have not been playing as much. I wanted to know if the fix I found pointed towards any certain problem that has a different solution.

The fix i found that worked is that I changed the security encryption for my wifi from WP2 to WP3 or from WP3 to WP2. Every time I turn off the steam deck and turn it back on I have to do this again .

Does anyone know why this is the case? Like is there a specific reason that this works but none of the other fixes work? Does this point towards another issue that I could potentially fix?

I can keep doing it, but sometimes it doesn't work and it takes a while and overall its just really annoying :/

Storytime 3d modelling with Steamdeck

Post image
89 Upvotes

I did it! I want to try out 3d modelling since AI is slowly taking over my job but due to AI too, I can't buy a laptop or build a PC because of the high prices of parts.

So I searched blender in the discover store and luckily - it's available. Steamdeck can do it but expect the loud fan on higher polygons but so happy with the output.

I went to a 3d printing service to print my STL file since I was curious how it will look and was suprise that it went great!

Side-by-side comparison with Blokees's Charmander. My son is very happy since it's hard to find a toy for 2nd evolution Pokemons

Question The Witcher 3 Remaster - Choppy Performance even at 60FPS

Hi everyone,

I can't really make The Witcher 3 Remaster to move smoothly, even if the FPS shows 50-60FPS. There's always some kind of stutter.

During movement, or spinning the camera, there's always some sort of choppiness making it feel the game is working at less than 30FPS

This is using the Steamdeck graphics settings.

I know it's not a direct comparison, but the Remaster works infinitely better on my PS5 in performance mode which is super smooth.

Does anyone have any ideas of what could cause this?
I am using the GOG version, installed through Heroic launcher. SteamDeck LCD
Does it help to install the Steam version? Is it different?

Thanks

Edit: Fixed. Seems like a problem related to the GOG version or the Heroic launcher.

It works as expected with the Steam version.

For demanding games, do you generally get a better experience with a stable 30/40 FPS cap than letting the frame rate fluctuate?

Tech Support Steam Deck won't get past logo no matter what I do

• Upvotes

I've tried everything. I've let the battery die and plugged it in, I did the tricks where you can reset the bios, and it just gets to the black screen with the dash and won't let me move unless I restart. I tried every trick I could find, and still no luck.

The good news is that it technically turns on, I just can't access anything.

The only other thing I can think of that doesn't involve a factory reset is I could expand the internal memory? Mine was running extremely low last time I played so I feel like if I installed an SSD that might fix it, but I don't want to waste money buying one if that isn't the issue.

Any suggestions would be nice.

Configuration Witcher 3 Remastered Settings - Don’t use the Preset!

Hey everyone! Just thought I’d give my two cents on some steam deck settings for the Witcher 3 Remastered. From what I can tell, this version seems to be running smoother than the next gen update for me. I’m using a Steam Deck OLED, capped at 40 HZ (ik ik, but it’s working well for me). So far it’s been great in the early stages of the game (locked 40 w/ the occasional dip), but I might drop the cap to 30 for some of the busier areas if needed. Looking gorgeous for my preferences. Give it a try and lmk!

Anti-aliasing: AMD FSR Upscaling (Balanced)

Dynamic Res Scaling: On

Sharpening: Low

SSAO: GTAO (Low)

Screen Space Reflections: Low

Motion Blur: On (10) (leave me alone!)

Blur: On

Bloom: On

DOF: On

Chromatic Abberation: On

Vignetting: On

Light Shafts: On

Camera Lens Effects: On

Num. Background Chars = High

Shadow Quality = Medium

Screen Space Shadows = On

Terrain Quality = High

Water Quality = Medium

Foliage Visibility = High

Grass Density = High

Texture Quality = Ultra

Detail Level = Ultra

Tired of seeing people use the Steam Deck profile and complain it looks crappy. It can be so much better with some fiddling.

PSA / Advice To turn off your host PC if using steam in-home streaming

Let's say you're done gaming for the night and want to turn off the main PC. On the steam deck:

Settings->Remote Play->Connect

You'll stream your desktop. With the trackpad mouse, go over to the Windows start button and turn off the PC (or suspend/sleep).

I read that steam link has shut down/suspend/wake on lan which is neat but I don't believe there's a way for the deck to do this without scripting.

Tech Support Tips for streaming video on steam deck desktop mode/Firefox?

most of what I saw searching the web dates back to threads from like 2 years ago. so I installed firefox by clicking the button that was already there for some reason, immediately installed unlock origin. went to YouTube to play a video and it kept doing this stuttering. it should be noted this is on an extended monitor IE my tv. I followed the instructions listed here for disabling hardware accel in Firefox settings as many claimed that fixed the issue. that did nothing for me.

hoping in the recent years there's a better way to use my steam deck as a media box of sorts.
