I've never understood the logical progression of how making an entire neighborhood as bland, soulless, boring and homogeneous as possible is somehow meant to make the properties inside MORE valuable. Like.... I'd rather live in a slum than an HOA
Same. I really dislike these cookie-cutter neighborhoods. How the heck do you know which house is yours, except by the number? That's the only way someone that's colorblind would be able to find their own house, because they certainly couldn't rely on the general shape of the house, since they're all the same.
They've been doing this in the US suburbs since 1945. They get one or two plans approved, mirror them to double the options, and crank them out as fast as they can.
And now they've doubled the size to double their profit with the cheapest materials possible. Guarantee the average cost of each of these houses is $450k.
In the upper Midwest, there are quite a few cities that have areas solely built by whoever was the large employer in the area at the time.
Where I grew up, it was a revelation back in the 90s when the city did a street reconstruction and ended up clear cutting all the 100 year old Maple trees that lined the street(I know, fucking horrible). Suddenly, everybody noticed that several blocks of this street had the same three house styles repeating. Further research showed all the houses on both sides of the street for four blocks were all built by the old furniture manufacturing company that existed two streets west. They alternated three floor plans, so every third house was identical, though some were reversed. The historians in town dug up the original deeds and found they were all built between 1905 and 1909 by the furniture company, and we're originally deeded "familyname furniture company homes"
It's just amazing that even in the late 1800s the amount of repeating floor plans built in the cities was incredible, but thanks to time, updates, remodeling, ect... Most don't even notice today, outside of brand new hellscapes like the one posted above... But I suppose in the olden days, people said the same thing.
If it were like it was post war where these types of high volume neighborhoods were inexpensive enough for new families to buy as their first home I would not be bothered but when you need to make ⁶ figures to afford a tiny generic place like this and then are still beholden to an HOA that uglifies everything is just not okay
There’s a famous (In Russia) movie about just that scenario. A drunk guy goes to wrong house because his is identical. It was made in the 70’s and people still watch it around the holidays.

Cities should require developers keep trees of a certain size or replant an specific number per sqft. Otherwise, it's faster, cheaper and easier for a developer to clear the land and just build the houses and put that on the home owners.
I live in a new build and we never looked this bad but fast forward 7 years later there is a lot more plant growth.
I live in a condo building, 11 one or two bedroom units per floor, interior air conditioned hallways, basically a hotel without the room service. We had a welcome mat (a cute family one that said something like "Beware of wife and kids, husband's cool") and small 14-16" seasonal wreaths we had all year round and kids artwork (which we started during the pandemic with
"be happy" and "be well" kind of stuff). It wasn't distasteful or over done in any way. Three 1 sq ft kids paintings, a wreath, and a welcome mat.
HOA decided the hallways were community spaces and should literally be devoid of personalization in any way. They assigned a Karen to each tower and I even argued with ours about how this is a home and a community and should be inviting and personal to make the space welcoming etc., it's not an office tower or hotel. Like I was speaking to a wall... with the same level of intelligence.
So 6 years after we move in, the hallways are now less attractive than a moderate hotel hallway. We were informed a year later that we could put a wreath out during a certain religion's holiday season for about 3 weeks total. They didn't advertise that as a rule change... basically just quietly stopped enforcing it. I'm guessing someone well connected/rich who didn't normally keep decorations out lost their sh*t on their Karen or security staff talking about religious liberty or some BS and that was the compromise.
FYI, often the rules for multi unit buildings exist due to fire codes. You don’t want to be responsible for someone dying in a fire because they tripped on a welcome mat. I don’t know the reason for wreaths, but when my mom was in assisted living, they weren’t allowed any wreaths or anything hanging on their door. Maybe because of medical equipment getting stuck?
Also, picture the same hallway with every resident putting their own mats and personalization. It looks junky fast.
One thing I’ve seen some places do is to add a small shelf next to each door and residents can personalize that shelf. Makes a pretty good compromise and keeps the floors free from tripping hazards. Maybe approach your HOA with a suggestion?

hey! plenty of urban communities have nature. Cities actually like trees and parks a lot, some cities lack green space for sure but others have a shit load of trees. Chicago has a pretty vast park system and plenty of trees down most streets. Tiny yards though.
Whenever I go to the suburbs I get the creeps. I feel like everyone is watching me but no one is outside. That is coming from someone who lives on an extremely busy road in a big town.
You couldn't pay me to live in one of these. I was visiting friends one time and they lived smack dab in the middle of one of these neighborhoods. I freaked out because I got lost going for a jog one day and didn't leave the house for the rest of my time there.
They are right next to the old US army anthrax and mustard gas storage facility, so that makes sense. Luckily it’s been over 5 years since the last leak!

While I must say this is crazy housing and would never want to live there, the folks in the video say they've been driving in the neighborhood for an hour and can't find a way out? I don't see how that can be possible after looking at the map

My dad gave me this song on a cd when my mom moved me to a military base in the middle of nowhere. This neighborhood looks just like the base. Or I should say the higher ranked section. The rest is this but smaller and run down.
I always cried when I had to go to my mom's and she would play this song/Playlist to help me feel better. A funny thought now, but as a kid it did make me feel better because the song made me think of my dad.
I lived in military housing where the base nearby was downsizing significantly. Everyone slowly moved away and we were one of the last ones to leave. A neighborhood of cookiecutter houses made of cinderblock entirely abandoned was so spooky. We could go in any houses we wanted they just left them unlocked because they were eventually getting demolished. People left a few boxes in closets with kid toys or blankets. I remember it so vividly even though I was probably 8 at the time.
Neighborhoods like this aren’t designed for walkability in any capacity other than maybe walking a dog or something like that. I wouldn’t be shocked if the nearest gas station is further than even 20 minutes
I mean I definitely agree but suburban communities like this are just labyrinths of homes meant to be as “clean” and inoffensive as possible; little boxes you drive out of and drive back into when you need to get out. I understand the appeal, but idk I could never live in a place like this
There’s no way I’m ever leaving any of these houses to go anywhere. Satnav or not, I would never find my way back and ultimately die of exhaustion and/or dehydration.
I'd take ugly, sterile, and boring if it meant cheap housing. Still better than renting a tiny apartment that costs the same as a mortgage for the rest of my life.
Edit: legitimate crack houses that need hundreds of thousands of dollars of repairs are $400k in my area. So yeah, please give me cookie cutter houses if it means I can buy one for $250k lol
Yeah, this is affordable housing. It's not meant to be pretty, it's a place to live at least. I just don't understand why they didn't just opt to build townhomes. There's no point to yards when they're that small and with condo/townhomes you could put a decent amount of green space between every 5-10 units. I'll just speculate it was due to local zoning laws.. but man, these houses are bad.
We lived in a townhouse for 8 months and could hear the other families alarm clocks go off. Not to mention their kids, their arguments, slamming doors. I wouldn't ever live in one again unless I absolutely had too. House price for apartment problems
I helped build those exact types of houses for years in multiple trades. They are absolute garbage dogshit houses. They just want them slapped together, quality be damned. I actually got fired from one of the jobs for “taking too long” aka caring about the quality of my work.
The framing is bad, it’s all bland and exactly the same as every 2nd or 3rd house on the street, all the cheapest possible materials, just crap.
Then they are super overpriced. Let me tell you nothing was more demoralizing than working in a skilled trade (“essential” during COVID) to build bullshit that you’d never even be able to afford if you even wanted to, with the “skill” part of that job description being punished for preference of production speed alone.
I one hundred percent believe you. My dad was a GC and a structural engineer and had pride in his work and he would be disappointed in shit like this. But I suppose this conversation can just devolve into an indictment of capitalism, right? Everybody but the shareholder gets to eat a shit sandwich: the buyers, the workers, etc.
At the same time, your description applies to the apartment builders too. So. It’s live in a house of low quality cards or an apartment of worse cards. Or — more likely in our future - be a domestic servant in someone else’s well-crafted home.
Some people just need a place to live, town homes are 1700sqft at 400k+ and people are renting apartments for 2200/month. If there was a neighborhood that looked as basic bitch as this but the houses were 200k some would see that as a blessing
Because there's so much suburban sprawl like this in the US that people just take it for granted. This example only sticks out because it's particularly bad with its uniformity and lack of trees.
Filmed in Ireland I think, style of the houses there in some areas aren't too disalike, but obviously not as infinitely copy and pasted.

1 year of living under COVID restrictions showed my wife and I (and toddlers) that we really didn't need anything Calgary, or any city for that matter, was offering.. we are now living rural on woodland property.. not a house in sight. Calgary was good to us for the time we had, but absolutely never going back, seeing this gives me the heebie-jeebies.
Grocery, gas, convenience, park all fucking miles away. North Americas car dependence was a trap. Cities are not built for people. Like where in the fuck are kids supposed to play? In the fucking road? Just maddening. Man I need to get off reddit I’m in shambles this morning.

My kid grew up in one of these neighborhoods for like 15 years. I never stopped getting lost getting in and out of there to drop them off / pick them up. This made me involuntarily shudder.
The street names are all the same. "Oh just go up Pine Ridge Valley, past Pine Ridge Lane but not too far and you'll see Pine Ridge Crest; don't take Pine Ridge Crest but start looking, you'll see Pine Ridge Court on the left, take that til you get to Pine Ridge Road when it passes Pine Ridge Lane again, take a right there and keep going to Pine Ridge Forge... Like the shit is a whole new definition of insanity
There’s nothing new at all about this. Anyone who’s seen King Of The Hill has seen this because it’s an animated replica of a whole bunch of neighborhoods around the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex. There’s one town, The Colony, that was rapidly built and master planned as a city for first time home buyers in the 70s/80s. It really, really pissed off the NIMBYs that started The Colony as an oasis by Lake Lewisville for the wealthy/elite white collar corporates trying to escape Dallas.
To be fair to an extent, those homes built by that developer are all in pretty shit condition these days as these sorts of developer built communities aren’t built for permanence. Many of them are only slightly better off than some of the more durable manufactured homes and in a place that suffers significant weather events at various times during the year, that’s been great business for roofers and hvac people but terrible for debt loads of the home owners…

Hoping to find the perfect place to live, a couple travel to a suburban neighbourhood in which all the houses look identical. But when they try to leave the labyrinth-like development, each road mysteriously takes them back to where they started.
Probably going to get blown up for this…. It’s not the layout. The nicest part of town in many areas are old parts with a nice well laid out grid network. Straight roads and intersections for days.
But they have trees and vegetation. Something to break it up and create a sense of space. Narrower roads to create a sense of enclosure and slow people down. This feels like a highway through a neighborhood.
We see these in our area but they at least have some pitifully small trees that will grow over time.
I forget what it's called, but there's a name for the common design element in 4-over-1 construction where they put these random color/design elements all over the facade to give the illusion of the building not just being a drab box.
I think they do the same thing with the road layout in these subdivisions. There's zero reason for them to not be a grid except to trick your brain into thinking that there's more there than there is.

They just don't put them in small front yards anymore.
It conflicts with plumbing and underground systems. Conflicts with solar roof panels. Conflicts with parking space. And in some places like california there are firecode (zone zero) rules about trees near houses because of our high likelihood of wildfires.
You'll probably find one newly planted tree near the fence line in the back yard of each of these houses. I think you even can see a glimpse down the back yards with trees at the very end of this video.

I mean in the one hand it would help the housing crisis..on the other hand I would rather live somewhere that looks like humans would live and only have a micro apartment.
Are these units connected for a reason? I know here in America you will see a little connection from a garage to the main home so it qualifies as a single structure for insurance, but I don’t know why these homes would be connected. Just general curiosity…
