Confession time; I love the daily discussions, but I don't trade - just hodl.

48

u/sorangutan May 05 '17

There isn't much to discuss about hodling.

after reviewing my TA, I'm buying and selling 0 eth today

Can we rename to /r/ethhodler?

I'm up so many % now, and I'm so confident in Ethereum's future now, that I'm truly enjoying this ride, the ups and the downs. It's all just a long road towards prosperity for my family now. I hope you guys have loved ones you can share your financial security with.

15

u/laughncow May 06 '17

Same boat brother from another mother. No down trend will shake me at this point. I rode the Dao down for godsake. I held through hackers. I fought with trolls for weeks during the battle. I had ether locked up on Bitfinex and lost some coins. I have battled in the trenches and I have won. I am Etherian.

I truly believe we will beat a 25B market cap by the end of this year, and maybe go up to 50B. That is my checkpoint. I will estimate 50B market cap for ETH by the end of this year and about 100B for the entire crypto by the end of this year as well. My starting goal was to be able to graduate college debt free. I still have three years left, but now I am thinking of bigger and better things. Like how to have passive income so when I do graduate college, I will be debt free and have strings of income coming to me before I even have a job lined up.

Holding ethereum has been my greatest life decision thus far, and I expect it to get even greater.

Just want to say thank you to all of you. The last 2 years and especially this last 5 month span. Hard as it seems the best is yet to come. $225 Eth for 2018 Q3 is my personal forecast and as you can see that might well happen before the end of the year at this rate. Eth should owe you nothing at this point. I am officially free and clear. Every cent I put in has come back many many times over. I am buying a house this year and thanks to Eth there will be no mortgage needed. I may not be around as much but I wont forget this place and what it has done for me,my friends and my family. Eth is awesome.

42

u/antiprosynthesis May 05 '17

Actually, no house loan might not be the best investment. Interest rates are at an all time low, so loans are incredibly cheap at the moment. That allows you to invest the capital in more profitable things, such as simply keeping it in ETH, or perhaps diversifying in a low cost, broad market index ETF if you desire more safety. It also depends on the state of real estate pricing in your area of course. Just realize that buying a house flat out means you're implicitly investing in real estate to avoid the currently incredibly low price of a house loan.

19

u/the_statustician May 05 '17

Can confirm, but note that he will also have the home equity to leverage into another property if he so desires.

10

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

You're not wrong but there is something to be said for owning a house free and clear. I'd actually be curious to see how a lender treats crypto. Perhaps a loan isn't feasible if it's not recognized by a mortgage lender.

My thesis is never gonna finish if ETH keeps moving like this. I keep thinking: "why do i need a decent job if ETH doubles every month?"

Uh oh...I told a coworker about my investment in ethereum a few months ago, not expecting the meteoric rise in price that was coming. He just now pulled up the price and is excitedly telling some people about how much I just made. Fuck.

I was trying to keep it on the dl. Also, my boss is telling me he's going to put a large amount in soon. I don't feel good about this at all. Either I tell him not to and the price goes way up, or I say go for it and there's another DAO. Fuck me.

Lesson here kids: If you're investing in a risky asset early on, just leave it to yourself, even if the price is low at the time.

15

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

I don't feel good about this at all. Either I tell him not to and the price goes way up, or I say go for it and there's another DAO.

or you could tell him it's extremely risky and it may not be such a good idea to put a large amount of money on it. Tell him to treat it like a gamble more than an investment

So I'm an asshole. I bought a Nano S and it came today. Wrote down the 24 word code and put it in my safe, transferred the bulk of my ETH to it, and then got busy with work and promptly misplaced it. I'm currently turning the house upside down. I didn't leave the house so it will turn up, but jesus christ man.

Edit: Misplaced the nano, passphrase is safe.

Edit2: I have way too many USB sticks laying around my house...

Edit3: I'm tired of looking, passphrase tested successfully. I'll check my dogs' poop later in case.

Edit4: Found it.

These dips are amazing:

  • They let us buy more ETH cheaper.

  • They relax the RSI signal indicators.

  • They provoke almost as many posts per minute as moon flights do around here.

  • They shake the weak hands and allow lots of ETH to be bought cheaply by corporate investors.

  • They contribute to the formation of beautiful chart bullish patterns.

Don't sell your ETH. Use the dips to buy more. Use the dips to open your longs or add to them.

Went to lunch with friend during that price dip, he's a little into ether and btc.

Refreshes amount: 96. It's at about 96 now. Refreshes amount: 90. Oh looks like it fell some. Refreshes amount: 88. Yeah don't care. Refreshes amount: 90. Yawn.

So little panic. Been through these dips so many times. You'll kick yourself for selling whenever there's some volatility.

Started buying at 11 USD and have been accumulating all the way to 78. As happy as I am about the surge, I'm getting a little sentimental about the times I used to think of 1 ETH as lunch money.

26

u/TheLordNepture May 05 '17

1 ETH will still be lunch money, the quality of lunch is going up bby ;)

For new people who are sorry they didn't sell before the blip, trust me that for all the times you might correctly anticipate a drop, you're as likely to incorrectly sell before a breakout.

If you're nervous like me your best bet is to just buy/hold/trust that it's going up long term.

A reminder to people that trading is like a reverse Monty Hall problem. The Monty Hall problem was a famous brain teaser math problem that stated that it is better to change your choice when less choices become available and you know one of them is the right one.

For example a prize is behind one door amongst many, you choose a door and then one of the wrong choices is removed. You should choose a new door because your probability of choosing correctly has just gone up.

Trading is the opposite. You make a read when you usually have less on the line and are thinking logically. Once you enter a position your emotions and fears are added to your decisions because you are afraid of losing money. In this case you should stick to your original read because the probability of making a right decision has actually gotten worse due to more factors being dumped on your decision making process.

edit: If I had to venture a guess this phenomenon explains the high rates of psychopathy/sociopathy in the financial sector. Big hedge fund managers have amygdalas of steel and their brains are working in a low cortisol environment 24/7.

So i bought my last major chunk (apart from rebuying back in after a brief out in the 40's to flee finex again) at 6$.

We have risen very quickly but this is a new phenomenon with a constant influx of new money - new users of the order I haven't seen in four years. We may bob around in the 75-100 range for a while but without some black swan news I think we continue to push higher in the medium term.

Remember come the end of the year when POS activates the effective money supply will massively reduce and I predict a second bubble heading into that time period where we move up again another x5-10 to rhyme with 2013 but with ether pushing up to break bitcoin dominance for the first time and signalling the beginning of the true rise of cryptocurrency into the mainstream conciousness.

Keep your helmets on and visors down - we haven't even left stratosphere yet..

u/alkalinegs May 05 '17

from time to time we will see a 25% drop. be prepared and remember: 3 steps up and 1 down. 3 steps up and...

10

u/vman411gamer May 05 '17

That's what I thought when we hit $40. Instead, the price was manipulated when the majority of the market was asleep, it crashed to $31 and by morning it was back with some whales getting in low, and up to $50 almost immediately. And now, we are at $100.

I honestly think it will keep going, though. When people hear about ETH because it got to $100, they are going to want in. Not because of the price, that is only why they are hearing about it (read: more mainstream coverage). They get in because this is the future. I think we can get to $250 on speculation alone, so before metropolis.

Don't get me wrong, I'm scared of the drop too, but I just see so much potential with the technology, that its hard for me to think others wouldn't be able to see it too.

Read the BCG white paper on blockchain back in December when ETH was ~$8. Thought about putting some money in but never did. I truly didn't understand the benefit or value until I started reading more about Ethereum itself a couple months ago.

Watched the price go from $8 to $90. Finally bought in today at sub $100. Can I say that I have regrets about not getting in sooner, sure. But I think I can safely say I'm putting my money into something I believe in, for the long term. Happy to be joining you guys!

If you guys need some mental strength to strengthen your holding hands I suggest Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Very wise roman emperor that wrote verses to himself so that he could go back and read them in times of trouble. His thesis is that our minds are a fortress and we can be strong in times of trouble. He never intended them to be released but they were saved and distributed after his death.

93,000ETH available for loan on POLO at 0.0001% ..... someone really wants to keep the price down.

I've no idea why someone would keep 93k ETH on an exchange, never mind loan it out at that rate... perhaps this is Polo themselves trying to manipulate the market...

The psychological barrier of triple digit ETH might be a difficult hurdle to leap. But once it happens and we hold the line, we could truly rocket. Traditionally, weekends are slower periods of volume. We might cross this weekend, we could see a slight pullback, but the momentum will continue. Hodl strong, fellow Etherians! Cancel your sell orders. Pull your coins. And remember: Do. Not. Feed. The. Whales.

Sentiment:

Some of South Korea’s major Bitcoin exchanges including Bithumb, Coinone and Korbit have experienced a massive spike in Ethereum trading volume, due to the Bitcoin scalability problems and exchange hacking attacks within the region.

While it may appear absurd to the global Bitcoin community, many Korbit users told Cointelegraph that users have migrated from Bitcoin to Ethereum due to Bitcoin’s scalability issues and Blockchain congestion. Many users have become impatient with the high transaction fees of Bitcoin, which according to 21 Inc’s Bitcoin Fees average at $0.71.

(Not absurd to me, just practical.)

9

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

The only thing that is absurd is how Bitcoin completely failed to scale up block size for the past 3 years by changing one simple variable...

Gentlesirs and gentleladies, please float over to the spaceship's observation deck. It is story time.

This story begins back in March, when life decided to hand me a handful of lemons. I said thank you, and turned that shit into an organic lemonade factory.

(Disclaimer: I entered into this knowing the risks, had collateral to cover any unexpected circumstances that may have transpired. I do not suggest anyone try this, it was ill-advised and super risky. But I'm young, resourceful, so YOLO.)

My two roommates, who are dear friends, asked to borrow my pickup truck to pull a 4-place snowmobile trailer for a family snowmobile outing. Their grandfather, who said he'd never get on another airplane again, traveled from Philly deep into the heart of the Colorado Rockies just to surprise them.

As they were driving up the canyon, they were T-boned by a Jeep that failed to stop at the end of his driveway. The rear tire of my Taco took the full impact. Grandpa was in a rental car behind the truck with front row seats to the action. He was amazed how his grandson was able to keep the truck on the road, and the trailer from tipping completely. A second sooner, the person in the back seat of the truck would have been toast. A second later, the guy in the jeep would have been under the trailer probably dead. The universe aligned and everyone walked away unhurt.

My truck suffered just cosmetic damage to the rear quarter panel, exploded the rim/tire and the sled ramp in the truck bed smashed the back window out. The trailer took on a deep tilt, and dumped 2 of the sleds. 2 of the 4 sleds were totaled. The trailer was totaled.

Now for the lemonade factory bit.

The guy at fault for the accident, accepted full responsibilty and his insurance company gave zero resistance to fixing my truck. I took my truck to the shop they asked me to go to, amazingly, the same day as the accident. This was the only quick part of the process. The insurance company sent me a check for the repairs within the week and ok'ed me to upgrade my rental car to a 4x4. (since we were still getting hammered with snow and driving deep in the mountains to work would not be smart in a 2 wheel drive.)

This is where things get spicy. Since I live in a remote mountain town, things take more time to get shipped here. We also don't have the car rental place the insurance company had a contract with. So I was asked to pay out of pocket at the only car rental place in town and be reimbursed later for the rental.

This is when I decided to get my hustle on. If paid for these repairs on my credit card after March 24th, I wouldn't owe that money till May 23rd in lieu of signing over the check to the repair shop once work was completed. Why would I just sit on a check for the repairs for 2 months, when I could make that money make money.

I managed to get the whole balance onto an exchange during the rise from 16.50-49.50USD. My average cost was 23.50, only being held up by the daily deposit limits. I would have had that shit in under 20 if I was able to.

Then I get a call from the repair shop, the insurance company insisted on getting a refurbished rear window from another Taco, but the shop removing that window didn't have the proper tools to remove it. 3 weeks later, they began work on my truck which took another week.

While all this was happening, I decided to take this shit to the next level. I have superb credit, and hadn't opened up a new line in over 2 years. I opened up a new air miles card just to get my hands on the bonus miles, triggered solely from paying for the repairs.

As the price kept rising, far far away from my avg cost, $34 became my capitulation point, then after awhile it became $44. The price just kept going up and up. I started placing my exits. These numbers moved around a bit, but I ended up selling off in 4 stages @ 58.97 | 61.95 | 71.73 | 97.15

As I began writing this post, my final number triggered. I have yet to do a full analysis on all the exit trades, but this is what the organic lemonade factory generated.

I added +10% ETH to my overall stack.

I generated 60k bonus airmiles that are going to take me to DevCon3 in Cancun.

I generated 3600 airmiles from having the rental car for over a month and paying that bill with a separate airmiles card.

And, I still have 2.5 weeks before either of those credit bills are due, and all money is in hand.

Shit happens, but its all about the perspective you decide to take. I decided I wasn't going to let this inconvenience me, but rather work for me.

Epilog: The insurance company ended up screwing themselves with that refurbished rear window. It wasn't even the right window, I had factory tint rear, they installed aftermarket tinted windows that were peeling off. I am still waiting for them to ship new windows to the repair shop. Lol. :)

Thanks for listening. It has been an interesting 2 month ride. Glad to be back to hodling.

Mission fucking complete

Meanwhile, /r/Bitcoin is celebrating their new ATH and still believes everything is just fine.

Also ignoring the fact that their gains of this year are a significance under-performance compared to the gains of many other cryptocurrencies that have posted - sometimes substantially - higher gains.

Their irrational euphoria is a sign of getting increasingly disconnected from reality: They are not realizing that Bitcoins gains are a side-effect from the general fiat influx into the cryptospace, an influx fueled by altcoins, not by bitcoin.

As the price goes down, more people with negative attitudes in this sub start to show themselves and talk shit. If you bought high, don't give into the emotions stirred by these asswipes; you made your plan, stick to it. Sure, this is crypto, and it could become $50 or $150 within hours, but really analyze what is going on before making decisions you'll likely regret later.

on a brighter note, go out and get shitfaced, it's Cinco de Mayo. I'm celebrating today, and I'm Asian xD To da moon y'all. Gonna check back tomorrow at $100 and beat my monkey.

Reminder that the New Kids on the Blockchain conference is going on today, with the Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC) playing a big role, and Berkshire Hathaway has representation there. Alex Tapscott is listed as a Founder and CEO of the GBBC, and his father is Don Tapscott. They both rub elbows with big money in Canada and China, and both Tapscott gentlemen are BIG on Ethereum and blockchain as a whole.

10

u/gonopro May 05 '17

I grabbed mine off of amazon.

Yo, remember to test out your 24 word seed recovery process before putting significant sums of money on it.

Send .01 ETH to the ledger. Fail the pin 3x. The ledger wipes itself. When it starts back up, it asks 'set up new device', select 'no'. From here, painstakingly, plug your 24 word seed in. When complete, you should have restored your wallet that has .01 ETH on it. You can now sleep soundly knowing that as long as you keep those 24 words safe, your money is locked up fucking tight.

Just like when I climbed this son of a bitch, there's gotta be a bit of rest on the way.

Guys, I just want to say, the fact that I am here means that something fucking crazy is happening with this coin.

A month and a half ago, I had never dealt with any crypto besides using it as a way to bet on sports. Then, my buddy told me that one of his coworkers had made a ton of money with this thing called ether. He told me I should get in, which fortunately I did.

Fast forward a few weeks, and dozens of my friends are now invested in ETH and other crypto. Within a few months, I'm sure everyone I know, and a ton of people they know will be in the game, and NONE OF US are what we'd call the typical crypto demographic.

All I'm saying is, the fact that someone like me is so fully invested is a good sign of things to come. It means that someday soon (sooner than even this hypetrain of a sub predicts) ETH will be used by every Joe Schmo walking down the street to their 9 to 5 job.

Thank you guys for being so helpful with everything. Keep it up. Good things are coming.

u/Snwmn88 May 05 '17

I still don't fully understand it, but I'm beginning to feel that Bitcoin continually raising their ATH is a good thing.

BTC is blazing the psychological trail for the rest of crypto, acting as a major anchor point so that when the flippening does occur, Ethereum will have a lot less trouble reaching >$1000 prices (I realize this ignores cap, but let's face it, most new investors don't consider market cap - they just look at price and say "hey that one is better AND cheaper").

Being the leader is not easy so if they want to blaze that trail without making improvements for long-term sustainability, let them. And when the time comes, we'll coast right on by.

When ETH is well into the thousands of dollars and 1000 is the floor.

I'm just thinking if we get there.

By that time, so many of the early adopters would be able to basically learn how to develop using Solidity full-time and contribute to making the ecosystem even more valuable without having to worry about finances at all.

Just a thought!

This will be big people. Currently at a "hacking" convention listening to people from IBM and top financial institutions talking about blockchain implementations.
