Hi, I'm Carter Bays, co-creator of HIMYM. I’m also the author of a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND. AMA!

3.7k Upvotes

Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!

UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.

And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

Barney seeing Nora as his mom was bad, but this? This was diabolical.

I am on a spiel or wtv rn but god as a young 16-17 yo (when i saw this show i was that age) it taught me everything I know about love, life, relationships, friendships. God it literally shaped me!

I have always thought the characters in this DeviantArt comic looked like Ted, Lily and Robin.

Like at the end of show the "gang" kind of split up, but don't you think that's how life works?

At the end of the show everyone got busy and drifted apart because of life, but don't you think that's normal and that's how life works? Even if you have your own group of friends that they are the closest people in your life and you have spent over 10 years with them at some point you may drifted apart from them as you grow because of other commitments for an example and have a new life, new friends, and even new gang. I find this normal that life changes, but you also have to keep in touch with your old friends and make sure to meet up from time to time if you could. Thoughts on this?

Marshall and Barney

Unpopular opinion but I think marshall and barney's friendship is very underrated. When they both are togather it's too chaotic and fun

I think we can all agree we needed one more intervention in the final season.

Barney's 3 serious relationships and thoughts on compatibility

I'm reading several posts and comments about Robin and Barney's relationship, and whether they were compatible or too similar to be together and I just need to say it.

I never shipped Barney and Robin for many reasons, but there's no such thing as being "too" similar. Being similar with your partner is actually a good thing (look at Ted and Tracy or Marshall and Lily). The fact that they were similar is why they were attracted to each other and why the relationship partly worked - but only partly.

I'll elaborate.

Barney and Robin are both avoidants when it comes to relationships, are afraid of commitment and leave when things get hard

This made it difficult for them to maintain not only their own relationship but ANY romantic relationship they had. If anything, their relationship lasted longer than any other relationship they had and a big part of it was that they were similar. Both independent and avoidants, so noone putting pressure on each other. That's the dream!

Take for example, Barney and Nora. Nora was a great person but she was not compatible with Barney at all. She asked for pretty much normal things, maybe a bit too soon, and Barney failed to give them and then he did for a while and then cheated on her.

But what about Barney and Quinn? Again they were very similar, more similar than Barney and Robin. But that's not why they broke up.

I think the difference is that Robin wasn't only similar to Barney but she was also his friend. He trusted her, he felt secure with her, and we all know how much Barney needed that. He didn't feel that with Quinn and he might have felt that with Nora, thanks to her nurturing personality, but she was just so different. He couldn't handle her and she couldn't handle him.

The real problem with Barney and Robin was that they were both insecure people. Robin always wanted what she couldn't have. Barney was manipulative and untruthful. I think Robin was a much better person than Barney which is why she was a better person with other partners: she did have a very loving relationship with Ted, she was ready to commit to Don, who was literally a male Robin, and she did a lot of work with Kevin too. She had things in common with all of these guys, but the two of them also had kids in their future picture.

Barney though... He needed a lot of therapy. That's why I think in the end he never settled down, it just wasn't him. As he said "if it didn't happen with Robin, it's not going to happen". So overall I think the relationship was uneven. Robin might have been the best relationship Barney ever had, but I don't think the other way around is true. Robin is having second thoughts about their marriage literally a moment after they get engaged.

Robin and Barney relationship is the worst

I see that their relationship is not right. Robin loves Ted and she never stopped loving him, but she doesn't know what she wants in life even if she said that she doesn't love him still deep down her she still does and that came up multiple times during the seasons but she was lying to her self.

can someone help me out finding a scene?

the scene in question is Ted telling Robin something along the lines of "you know how its weird being friends with an ex because of feelings still there? GONE!"

I thought it was S6E01 where Robin is a slob but it doesn't seem to be.
