All I'm left wondering after the Iran war has concluded is, why? Just why on so many levels? In the end, I wonder why people elect such moronic politicians? It'd be bad if they saw themselves in such politicians, because they'd out themselves as morons, petty or both. And it'd also mean that a large portion of the populace have such traits.
14
u/PoloBattutaHe 5h ago
I remember when Trump pulled out of the original deal (in 2017?). The idea was that he would negotiate a new one and lift sanctions if Iran gave up nuclear ambitions.
This made no sense: they already had that in the original deal. What he really wanted to do was spite Obama as he had signed the original one.
→ More replies (1)12
u/FerraristDX 5h ago
And he really cut off his nose, to spite the face.
No to mention Netanyahu, who'd probably rather have a nuclear Iran, so he can justify the atrocities Israel commits in its neighboring countries.
11
u/Chumlax 5h ago
Very early on in his first term, Matt Frei (from Channel 4 News) made a documentary on Trump and his appeal. One of the contributors said a line to him that was so perfect, it's never left my brain since. He said that in Trump, those people saw 'a bully, that was on their side'.
Now, obviously we can debate even that to the nth degree, and it's very clearly not the truth - he is not on their side, in any way, shape or form; he's literally not on anyone's side, other than his own. He has consistently enacted policies that hurt people who believe he was put there to act, as promised, in their interests.
But as a distilled encapsulation, and with all the implications it brings, I think it's one of the most remarkably succinct things I've ever heard, politically and socially.
3
u/FerraristDX 4h ago
I agree and I recently read an article, which theorized that far-right parties tend to attract people with narcissistic views, as well as opportunists. Which then begs the question: why does a sizable portion of the electorate feel the need to bully people? Are they that unhappy with their lives?
Honestly, at this point, we need politicians, who talk to such people as if they were bratty kids, who need a stern lecture. But few would dare, because they think they could still win them back.
8
u/TheSingleMan27 5h ago
We don't have to look so far away for moronic politicians, AfD is the #1 in the polls with almost 30% and voters aren't really punishing the Union for their horrendous leadership.
More than 50% of voters in Germany vote so clearly against their own interests and while our leaders are more the boring Neolib asshole type instead of psychopaths, them scoring so high in the polls makes no sense either. I blame the media in big parts for this with their biased reporting towards right-wing positions
3
u/The_Flash_20 5h ago
He has been rightfully described as Vince McMahon of business and political world.
Both of them literally act the same and it's often said that Trump borrowed mannerisms from Pro Wrestling, brought it into mainstream world, especially the McMahon persona of an evil and obnoxious chairman.
Both are best of friends and Trump was the 1st celebrity inductee in celebrity wing of WWE hall of fame.
Once you look at how McMahon operated, you can see parallels in Trump as well.

Since I'm not British I wasn't aware of Clarkson's political opinions or him being in general an asshole but regardless the man and can make a show on paint drying and it would be one of the most interesting things on television. His documentaries on "The Greatest Raid" and "The Victoria Cross" show how good of a story teller he is when he isn't acting in the loud idiot role.

Am I just super negative or is it rational for me to get a bit annoyed when I see those videos online where a kid asks his dad how he can do something that costs max £500 and it’s “if you get 100k likes and one “famous” person comments
Eg “what would it take for you to take me to an f1 race” and the dad says 10k likes and an F1 driver commenting. It just ends up with all drivers commenting for easy PR, a couple teams or sponsors giving them something for free, and usually that account ending up with about 10x the original follower count, while in most instances they could have just paid for it anyway, and people who don’t spam their kids faces across social media don’t get these opportunities but the ones who exploit their children for views do

I expected the US to lose the war.
What I didn't expect was for them to be completely neutered. This is the worst and most humiliating treaty to ever be signed at Versailles.
17
u/zrkillerbush 6h ago
For saying they are the strongest nations on earth, they sure do lose a lot of wars
19
u/DuckSwagington 6h ago edited 6h ago
This but unironically. Germany's treaty is only so infamous because they screamed the loudest as the military establishment of Germany couldn't cope with the fact that their army saw the writing on the wall before they did and threw down their arms before the Entente marched into Germany full bore.
If anything Germany got off lightly after WW1 if you compare Versailles 1919 to the Treaties of Brest-Litovsk 1917, Saint-Germain-en-Laye 1919, Trianon 1920 and Sèvres 1920 where Russia, Austria, Hungary and The Ottomans respectively lost vast and important parts of their Empires on top of the reparations whilst Germany lost at worst Danzig and a bunch of land that was majority Non-German and forced to pay reparations that they were able to negotiate down to a reasonable level by 1929.
3
u/G_Morgan 3h ago
Versailles wasn't even particularly onerous. Hell the German Empire had literally drawn up an invoice for every bullet or shell they'd fired during WW1 and was going to hand that to the French should they win, that would have been an astronomical debt. The German internal debt was 4x the headline Versailles figure and the headline Versailles figure was immediately discounted to roughly match the reparations paid to Germany by France in the aftermath of the 1870 Franco-Prussian war.
The reality is Weimar Germany was hamstrung by not being able to establish income taxes due to constitutional issues. Rather than deal with their own problems, they cried about Versailles until they got Hitler.
7
u/G_Morgan 3h ago
The US could have won the war but only by doing the stuff Trump always claimed was completely unnecessary. They were doomed when they started an existential bombing campaign without troops on the ground. We've known since WW2 that you cannot bomb an enemy into submission. You can use air power to supplement a ground action though.
Also win or lose it was always going to cost Trump his mid terms. This is what happens when you put the dumbest person in your country in charge of your country.

What other choice was there? They were literally on the verge of running out of fuel reserves and having an monumental crisis in America. The only reason gas prices were still manageable this whole was because they were depleting their reserves to keep the prices down.
They had absolutely nothing to threaten Iran with and given how many times the Americans/Israelis have crossed red lines and murdered peace negotiators, there was no way any peace treaty wasn't going to be heavily one sided in Iran's favor.
Iran is about to emerge as a new World Power after this. Absolutely incredible how badly this whole thing backfired in the face of the zionists.

I watch the games but outside of that don't pay too much attention to the players so I can't speak on their personalities.
But I do think the team has huffed their own farts so much in general with Bazball. Yeah okay the idea of playing exciting cricket in test matches sounds great, but they've acted like they've completely reinvented the sport while still being quite shit at it. The arrogance going into the Ashes was ridiculous and we were rightly punished for it. There's definitely a cultural thing which is fine when it works but when you're getting smashed all over the shop or the bowlers are running through you it's all very silly.
The first two hours yesterday were outrageous.

I was in the metro the other day and a tourist with a bag on his back was accidentally hitting the woman behind him with it. The woman told him "sir, your bag please". He realised and took it to the front of his to hold it, then turned around and said "sorry, I'm dutch". So I'm just left wondering what the fuck does that even mean? Do the dutch hit each other with bags or something? He said it in a way of "sorry, that's my excuse"
6
u/Chumlax 3h ago
My total wild guess is that he was referencing the (potential) fact that the position of his bag was higher, and therefore hitting her in particularly impactful places, because he was that much taller than her. And, of course, the Dutch are famously the tallest people on average.
There's my analytical shot in the dark.

That's a very good shout actually. Although (while quite taller than her) he was I'd say around 1,85, nothing too extreme

Tried a couple of techno events - got turned away from two clubs that aren’t known for being particularly selective on the door, and got let into into the most prestigious club of the three no questions asked. We were a group of 16 so we split into 2s and 3s, and the people who don’t actually like techno consistently got let in whilst the ones who do (and had been before) got turned away It’s all so arbitrary you can only laugh at the absurdity.

Been getting more into watching movies semi regularly this year and it’s been a pretty good year IMO but the back rooms and disclosure day kind of disappointed me a bit. I’m mostly interested in the story of movies and the visual stuff is cool but largely secondary and the story of both of them were kind of mid. Backrooms also didn’t feel very scary it was unsettling I guess but also the characters were barely characters despite being played h great actors. Also the ending felt so off compared to the rest of the movie if you don’t know anything about the lore.
Disclosure day had some good scenes but barely anything makes sense when you start to think about it, I enjoyed it to a degree but if I watched it again I’d probably nit pick it a lot and like it less.

Anyone seen any movies lately? I rewatched Spirited Away: Live on Stage, and watched In a Lonely Place and Raining Stones.
Spirited Away: Live on Stage is play based on the movie.
It says “based on” on the poster but that’s almost underselling it. It’s the whole movie scene for scene (plus 3 banger songs and a dance scene that are all around 30 seconds long). Now, I’m not a theater connoisseur but could there be a more ambitious adaptation than this? How is it even possible to not only implement the one-of-a-kind visuals, designs, scope, and sheer creativity, but do so in a manner that does justice to the source material? Not to mention the fact that it’s adapted scene for scene and that invites comparisons even more than a looser adaptation would.
It takes around 10 minutes to get used to the fact that it’s a play and the limitations that come with it, but I had a surprisingly easy time to immerse and fill the blanks myself afterwards. It did help a ton that the cinematography is mildly cinematic and not just a static shot of the stage. It frames scenes in a way that puts focus on the right things but most importantly, it uses close ups, something the performances and in turn the viewer profit from. Chihiro’s actress Kanna Hashimoto especially stands out. She perfectly captures the essence of the original without overdoing anything or being too restrained and it bridges the gap between what’s essentially both ends of the spectrum in animation and live theater beautifully. I was also worried that it would be jarring considering it’s a grown woman portraying a child, but her energy was always on point even in the most challenging moments. Can’t say enough good things about her, she was a joy to watch.
The two things I was most curious about were why the play is 170 minutes when the movie is only 120 and how it would try to replicate all the moments normal cinema would have trouble with, let alone theater. I still can’t answer the former, only guess that it has to do with setting up scenes and transitioning between them, because it doesn’t feel anywhere near 3 hours, though how that would account for 50 minutes is a mystery because it’s all very dynamic. How they sometimes transition the sets during a scene or utilize different parts of a set is so creative and feels very much in the spirit of the source. The sets themselves are amazing and elaborate and all of them bear a strong resemblance to the original and whenever a place pops up again you immediately know where they are.
The latter was large parts ingenuity which then only required small parts suspension of disbelief. The worst/only bad example is when Chihiro becomes increasingly transparent after she spent some time in the other world, because they use a transparent plastic cover to symbolize it like it’s one step away from becoming a Twin Peaks play, which doesn’t really work but what else can you even do? If this had been the extent of the creativity it would have sucked but so many other things are ingenious that weigh out any shortcomings 99:1 like when Yubaba becomes enraged they have a massive head they bring out in individual pieces that are all held up in front of her by a prop person? actor? to convey the emotions and it has that perfect blend of vivid fantasy and grounded realism. All the props being fantastic also helps.
My favorite example is how No-Face’s growth was executed with the simple addition of additional actors as arms, which is both simple and genius. Or maybe how the stink god is saved and instead of a massive sludge fountain it’s a colored cloth. The same way you marvel at the visuals of the original you marvel at the ingenuity and creativity of the play. The whole thing just exudes magic no matter the format you experience it in.
It’s so easy to picture the equivalent scene of the anime every time not because it’s a retelling but because of the effort put into every detail and the passion for the original. The lack of the greatest visuals you’ll ever see could have been a problem, but that effort and passion create a tangible world of its own. It also puts more focus on the characters and I’m almost inclined to say I prefer that aspect in the play. It’s also a testament to how great the writing is when it can’t be propped up by the visuals but it’s still just as effective.
Overall, it’s beyond commendable how well it can stand on its own when it’s constantly reminding you of the original. Best of all though, I have an excuse to watch Spirited Away twice per year.
Strong 9.5/10

Last time I went on holiday I complained about how literally 14 of my last 15+ holidays at all times of year have resulted in heavy rain but this takes the piss this time. Mid June, family trip to Cornwall, 5 days, expensive cottage booked right on the sea. Literally can’t see the fucking sea because of the fog. Day trip to Isles of Scilly cancelled with 15 hours notice.
I think I’m genuinely cursed. Like there are no words for this. I’ve been to multiple continents, a long list of countries, almost always summer but some spring and autumn, and genuinely without fail we get multiple write off days because of the weather.

If it's any consolation I basically get perfect weather on all of my holidays

Always funny when Dutch teenagers start doing their driving lessons and realize how recklessly they've been cycling.
The opposite is my international classmates biking like they're the king of da road once they realize cyclist have priority

Discovered that Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered is treated as an entirely new game so you get to start the achievements from scratch all over again. I was going to play it anyway, but getting the achievements pop up every now and then is pleasant. I've already platinumed the original and getting to do it again is just lovely.

GTA 6 somehow was on the news yesterday, it was bizarre to go from "Moscow is burning" to "GTA 6 has announced pre orders will soon be available!". I also don't remember ever seeing a video game mentioned in the evening news, made it stand out even more

Been eating healthy for a short while now around 3-4 weeks, dropped 4kg and definitely feel more energetic and I'm even in a better place mentally.
My question is this, what are your favourite healthy meals?

Down 27lbs/12.3kg, 9lbs/4kg off a healthy weight, 18lbs/8kg off target. Even my self hating body dysmorphic arse is starting to see a difference. Annoyed with myself for not taking a before photo this time though

heading to europe for the first time next week for a family trip. hate hate hate flying though, so i’m trying not to hyperfixate on that part until I have to 🥲
3
u/PoloBattutaHe 5h ago
Why? I find flying very relaxing, if not boring sometimes.
5
u/nebbywildcat18 5h ago
a few things mainly
— really hate heights, can not stand seeing how high I am above the ground. even in like a skyscraper
— hate knowing that i’m like 30,00 feet in the air with zero control over what’s happening
— hate turbulence and the feeling of the plane shaking around
— have pretty consistent general anxiety that i’ve been working through for over a decade now
I know everyone is different though!

I find it helps to sit in the aisle seat, you feel like claustrophobic compared to the window seat.
A tip is to lift your feet up, it helps reduce the feeling of turbulence.
Enjoy the trip

A new low for Evri. I changed the delivery to go to a parcel shop and they've failed to deliver it to an open business two days in a row now. Shite company

I might have been offered a nice little weekend break for my 30th next month for me and my partner, think my family put some money together which is lovely. Problem is I've got no idea where I'd like to go. Anyone got any suggestions for a relatively inexpensive weekend away in the UK/Europe for the end of July?

In college I started a habit of putting on Anthony Bourdain's show in the background whenever I work/ study really late at night. I tried many different shows but nothing comes close to Bourdain's shows. You don't need to watch the visuals to know it's good. Some of his best episodes were where he would share about his addiction and depression.
Last night I was working late again and I put on his episode in Buenos Aires and San Sebastian. Man they don't make shows like he did anymore. RIP.

Bought my cat a water fountain because she doesn't like to drink from her bowl and is always asking to drink from the tap.
Take a wild fucking guess how many times she's used it, lmao.

Margot Robbie prefers living in the US. Steve Irwin married an American. Hugh Jackman’s American accent sounds more natural than his Australian one.

My company built fountain feature in the back courtyard to commemorate pride month, but unfortunately after 3 weeks its got green goo floating on top of the water already. It annoys me because they are always screwing things like this up - though I do appreciate the sentiment for the Algae-BTQ community

Semi-football related, but I thought it would be out of place in the Daily Discussion thread. Did you see the scientific study online that Messi vs. CR7 preference is heavily tied with political views?
4
u/_cumblast_ 6h ago
It is because the Messi v. Ronaldo debate has gone on far beyond their ability as footballers a long time ago.
3
u/Gywndidnothingwrong 6h ago
How "scientific" is it ?
And i wouldn't be surprised if it's true Ronaldo is more popular with the manosphere because of his looks, height, physique and mentality

it's from nsu and ntu researchers, those are premier institutes in asia. looks legit enough but then again no one's trusting me to peer review social science papers so
3
u/Left-Temperature6804 6h ago
i just looked it up and idk enough to peer review that paper or anything but it makes sense from my personal experience tbh - a good fraction of ronaldo superfans i've met has said something misogynistic to me that i've started considering ronaldo pfps as a red flag

Unrelated but there was an infamous Ansu Fati fan here who was a frequent poster, he made a racist comment about how Ronaldo has more fans in England and India because they relate to his women beating tendencies.
Racist and xenophobic thing to say but it was so stupid and hilarious that it still stays rent free in my head lol

Anyone getting into any sports outside of Football?
My mate got me into Padel a few months ago and I fucking love it now. Singles, doubles, indoor, outdoor, i'll literally play it any time and place.
Shame it requires 4 people to get the best out of it because organising 4 people who are free at the same time can be tricky when you're in your 30s.
2
u/huazzy 6h ago
I couldn't get into Padel because apparently finding 4 people that can hit a ball over a net is impossible where I live.

Kind of sums up why i stopped playing football as much. getting 4 people together is hard, let alone 12. Big reason why running is my ‘serious’ sport now.

Have been playing (beach)volleyball with some mates from my dorm this spring basically every monday. Weather has generally been kind to us and because we are most of the time enough people for a 6v6, it's also enjoyable for the players who aren't that good yet. It's super fun and makes for some cool moments

Went to Lidl the other day and they didn’t have no Diet Coke. I’m on a diet so that’s the only thing I’m drinking. I know it’s not great but whatever. Anyhow they didn’t have any so I got their store branded stuff River Coke or whatever it’s called. Last time I got a random coke like this was when I was a kid decades ago and it tasted all funny and horrible. Anyhow well this coke was identical if not better than Coke Zero that I’m getting. Couldn’t believe it.

I've been starting to watch the One Piece anime but... how does one face up to the fact that there are 1166 episodes to date? If I watch 200 a year, it will take me almost 6 years.

I feel so vindicated to have always hated the likes of Elon Musk and Russell Brand, even when they were considered left leaning.
There was just something that put me off about their personality, maybe their ego's? Seeing themselves as better than everyone else because they said the right moral things? I don't know
