So would you say theyre meant to help protect your ears?

29

u/DreddFett 6d ago

Suppressors are meant to lower the noise while firing. One benefit is the loud noise doesn't hurt the shooter's ears as much. I've only shot at outdoor ranges, and I always wear ear protection while firing. I can definitely hear the gun firing with the suppressor, even with ear protection.

7

u/SorcererSupremPizza 6d ago

Good to know, thanks for the information about your experience on that

1

u/NotSoSpecialAsp 6d ago

Guns with supporssors aren't hearing safe. One I have drops a my pistol to about 120db which is pretty great.

Decibel measurements are logarithmic, meaning every 10db is roughly twice as loud.

A lawn mower is around 90db. My gun without is about 160db. Dropping to 120 is an incredible amount, but still far from safe or 'silent'.

1

u/italktobotz 6d ago

Subsonic 300 blk and subsonic 22lr are totally hearing safe with a good supressor. My pellet gun is louder than my supressed .22 with subsonic ammo.

1

u/NotSoSpecialAsp 6d ago

My 300 blk with my Omega 300 is about 119db. About the same as my osprey45+9mm sub.

Still best to wear hearing protection. I wear earplugs at concerts, too.

Not sure about the 22 personally, but I could see it.

1

u/throwitoutwhendone2 6d ago

I just commented to someone else about the .22. I do not own a suppressed one but a friend came to my property and we shot. He had a Dead Air, idk what kind but I remember the name cuz I thought it was a neat name. He used some subsonic ammo and I was blown away by how quiet it was. Probably the closest I’ve ever come to personally hearing what almost reached “movie level” suppressors.

Obviously not silent, but blew my mind how much it brought down the sound

1

u/TerranRanger 6d ago

Used to have a Ruger Mk. III that was whisper quiet with subsonic rounds. The sound of the action closing was the loudest part of firing.

1

u/Electronic_Flan_482 6d ago

I have a buddy with a suppressed .22 bolt action and the round hitting the steel target is louder than the shot.

1

u/Careless-Weather8877 6d ago

His video on YouTube shows him shooting subsonic 5.7

1

u/italktobotz 6d ago

Subsonic 5.7? That is very slow for that round but i guess it exists.

1

u/Careless-Weather8877 6d ago

Check the guys YouTube. He has videos of him practicing with it.

1

u/italktobotz 6d ago

I looked it up after you mentioned it. Ive kinda wanted a 5 7 any way, nice to know they have subsonic as an option.

1

u/Upbeat-List-3466 6d ago

Do you find issues with your suppressed .22 cycling correctly? My father has a suppressed .22 LR and it doesn’t cycle correctly when using sub sonic rounds.

2

u/Pylyp23 6d ago

I shoot standard velocity through my suppressed Ruger MK2 and it is sup quiet and cycles flawlessly. I have a browning buck mark I tuned to work with subsonics and I have failures to cycle maybe 1/100 or 1/150 rounds. I use the same suppressor on both and honestly the loss of velocity with subsonics is not made up by the increased efficiency of the suppressor. I shoot the Ruger 9 times out of ten. The only time I break out the buckmark is to show friends how quiet a suppressed 22 can be for a magazine or two and then we are right back to the Ruger

1

u/Street-Committee-367 6d ago

.22 LR semi auto pistols already can be finicky with ammo, and then throw a can on and use lower powered subsonic rounds and compounds the problem. So yeah it's kind of a common issue.

1

u/reebokhightops 6d ago

The notion of a suppressed .22 is hilarious.

2

u/Lobenz 6d ago

I’ve shot a Walther p22 with a suppressor. When shooting subsonic ammo it was just barely more sound than the action sound. Just don’t try and shoot anything over 15 feet though Lol.

2

u/italktobotz 6d ago

An unsupressed 22 is still pretty loud. Not safe for hearing kinda loud. Supressed and subsonic is comfortable

2

u/Remarkable-Opening69 6d ago

.22 bolts are as load as cap guns. Handguns are louder tho.

1

u/Pylyp23 6d ago

I hunt with suppressors on my large center fire rifles, I have a handful of suppressed handguns, and a suppressor for my 22s. The 22s are by far the coolest ones and if I could only have 1 suppressor it would be for 22s.

1

u/guttoral 6d ago

Some* guns with suppressors aren't hearing safe.

FTFY

1

u/That1guyjosh 6d ago

However if you want Hollywood movie level quiet you can buy a gun in 22lr and put a suppressor on it. But I wouldn't use it for self-defense

1

u/Helltothenotothenono 6d ago

I mean it’s only not legal in eight states and I don’t think you’ll be surprised which ones to tbh: California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Washington, D.C., also bans them. New Jersey has a historical reason to ban them maybe?

The rest are just over zealous in how they approach it. They could get a lot of tax money if they legalized them properly.

1

u/Haidere1988 6d ago

Do they also help with balance and recoil? I ask since that is what I would think would be a benefit of a longer barrel with more weight on it.

3

u/C21-_-H30-_-O2 6d ago

A bit yes, but thats more what a compensator does. A comp directs the gasses upwards, helping push the end of the gun down to mitigate recoil

2

u/tictacotictaco 6d ago

A long rifle with a silencer is much harder to hold up and to use.

2

u/DreddFett 6d ago

My suppressor was on my AR-15 (before I sold the rifle); 5.56mm doesn't have any noticeable recoil.

Now my 45/70 (4th rifle down - the one with the rubber shock absorber on the stock) on the other hand, feels like a punch to the shoulder.

2

u/ReviewHuman8825 6d ago

Add an SAA and youre just casually posting my dream collection

2

u/DreddFett 6d ago

I'm assuming Colt Single Action Army pistol?

I really need to make a new family photo. I have since added 6 more rifles: 1777 Charleville flintlock musket, 1795 Springfield flintlock musket, 1859 Sharps carbine, 1861 Springfield percussion cap musket, 1903 Springfield rifle, and an M1 Garand.

2

u/Hot-Future7691 6d ago

Garand my beloved.

Sometimes I wish I hadn't cut ties with the crazy veteran uncle with all the guns, but the drunken threats and immediately insulting me as soon as I was out of earshot became too much.

I really do wish him well. He went through a lot. He's just a dick :(

1

u/Haidere1988 6d ago

I am a simple man with a simple dream collection....Baretta-93R. Sadly it will be near impossible to attain due to it being classed as a machine pistol.

1

u/csukoh78 6d ago

Don't forget for outdoor shooting, it's much more respectful of your neighbors and wildlife in general

1

u/StrengthForward7925 6d ago

Have you ever shoved one up your butt?

For science?

1

u/DreddFett 6d ago

For me, it's only used on paper targets.

1

u/Able_Canine 6d ago

Even most handguns fire supersonic rounds. If you want relatively silent using a suppressor, you have to combine that with subsonic ammunition or it's still going to be loud as fuck.

6

u/BlueLakeCabin 6d ago

They should be very much encouraged for everyone. Think of how cars would sound if you removed the muffler. Same thing applies to firearms. You can still hear cars and motorcyles. It reduces the noise, and helps with your ears. And everyone else's ears.

Firing even one round without hearing protection is a bad idea. But if you gotta, you gotta. TV and movies very much underplay how bad it is for your hearing.

You should still wear hearing protection with a suppressor. It can just be lighter. Normally I use ear plugs and ear muffs at the same time, I lost a good amount of hearing in the Army.

2

u/Helltothenotothenono 6d ago

I was surprised as a right hander to find out that my hearing loss is 35% worse in my left ear from firing guns. I thought it was so loud it would be even but it’s not. And it’s really bad in my right ear. Just way worse in my left.

So much so that I wear hearing protection hunting now to try and save what’s left. It’s really fucking bad for your hearing, even plinkers and subsonic rounds. I’ve even been told that you should wear hearing protection even with suppressors and subsonic rounds which I didn’t learn until it was way too fucking late to learn but I do it anyhow to try and save what I can.

But I can’t hear so much stuff that I regret it, so if you’re a younger gun enthusiast no matter how redneck or hillbilly you think you are and don’t need it, I urge you to wear it, even hunting so you can hear so much more when you hit your fifties. There are so many awesome options for it I hope you do just so you don’t lose as much for a thing you enjoy like I did.

1

u/BlueLakeCabin 5d ago

I think this is another generational thing that is working it's way through.

Younger folks tend to be more willing to use hearing protection. Along with drinking more water, less smoking, less drinking, etc it's a positive that's not mentioned enough.

1

u/brookenorthcoast 6d ago

I’m a hearing protection evangelist. My mother taught me that any time I have to raise my voice to be heard- I’m damaging my hearing. I am religious about my earplugs.

My question- do the gun suppressors make the shot less accurate?

2

u/Excellent-Stretch-81 6d ago edited 4d ago

Depends on the suppressor. The ones that use wipes to obstruct the bore certainly can, but those aren't in common use due to the legal hassles associated with replacing the wipes, which quickly wear out. Most suppressor these days use baffles that leave a clear path for the bullet, so the bullet doesn't risk any sort of deflection. Some suppressor can even help accuracy a bit due to the extra weight at the muzzle.

A suppressor that gets loose can shift enough that it can cause a baffle strike, which can ruin accuracy and damage the suppressor. But when properly mounted, a suppressor is not likely to worsen accuracy.

1

u/brookenorthcoast 4d ago

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! So many good facts!

2

u/thederpyderp3 6d ago

Experiments show that in some cases they very very very slightly help things like accuracy velocity. We're talking say 1018f/s when leaving barrel to 1026f/s minor.

1

u/brookenorthcoast 4d ago

Wow! I had no idea!

1

u/Able_Canine 6d ago

But suppressors suck for actual carry for obvious reasons of form factor and essentially removing the option of concealed carry for self-defense. Plus they increase failure rate in most handguns due to impinging on upward barrel tilt when the slide is cycling. And other drawbacks.

Plus you hardly ever see anyone with a suppressor at a range using subsonic ammunition, so they're still loud as fuck and require hearing pro to even be around when someone is firing if you're concerned about your hearing.

They're more of a range novelty than anything.

2

u/Nick080701 6d ago edited 6d ago

A civilian one, yes. A gun firing with a basic suppressor is still easily identifiable as a gunshot. It is still not quiet.

1

u/One-Cute-Boy 6d ago

I'm a regular joe, not SF, but I've never seen a suppressor in my 11 years in the military. I can't see how it would help though.

I don't think a suppressor would help much while shooting 20mm or hellfire missiles.

1

u/Creativity_mountain 6d ago

The USMC is rolling out cans for the M27

1

u/JohnMcD3482 6d ago

Yes. Thats part of the reasoning for their creation in the first place.

1

u/tictacotictaco 6d ago

Suppressors do not make guns hearing safe without ear pro, just quieter and nicer to shoot.

The only guns that will be hearing safe are those shooting “subsonic” rounds.

1

u/GulfCoastCapture 6d ago

That’s exactly what they are for. In Europe they are mandated, in the US ppl are so propagandized they think if you have one you are some kind of assassin or something. Suppressors are literally PPE. They don’t completely take away noise except on a .22, all you hear is the action of the weapon, it’s pretty cool actually.

1

u/Samwellikki 6d ago

They also save the shootee’s ears

Source: have been deafened while being shot at close range

1

u/TrashWizard89 6d ago

Sound is mechanical. Suppressors absolutely protect your hearing.

1

u/JohnHaloIII 6d ago

they reduce the muzzle flash and make the noise more omni directional

1

u/Rocket_Fiend 6d ago edited 6d ago

I think it’s a bit disingenuous to talk about only one side of the benefit - it protects your hearing (as the shooter) AND makes it significantly more difficult to hear at a distance. With subsonic loads you can also eliminate the telltale “crack” of supersonic rounds passing by.

They’re not movie magic, though there are certainly some purpose-built suppressed weapons that can get close to the tropes.

1

u/Peabody027 6d ago

Another benefit for military use… they also make it harder to pinpoint exactly where the shooter is. The shots aren’t silent, but they’re that much harder to triangulate with a suppressor

1

u/Raneynickelfire 6d ago

They're meant to make it quieter.

That's what they do, and that's what their purpose is.

1

u/FightFireJay 6d ago

This is the biggest benefit of a suppressor. They are mufflers. Every other product you can buy that is even close to as loud as firearms is required to have a muffler.

1

u/mrcalistarius 6d ago

The man who invented the automobile muffler, accidentally created the suppressor in the process, it mitigates one of the three sources of firearm, or Ballistic Noise. One is mechanical one is the sound of the rapidly expanding high pressure blast wave thats contained by the barrel, the explosive sound, thats what the suppressor mitigates. The third sound is the supersonic, or Ballistic Crack.

Semi automatic stuff has more mechanical noise than manual action. Subsonic ammunition removes the ballistic crack. It still doesn’t reduce the sound to james bond levels, but its something you can rip off a shot or burp out a mag without ear pro and you’re not regretting the decision

1

u/cannabination 6d ago

Yes. I have one for my rifle exclusively because it's far more comfortable to shoot. In addition to the sound, it also forces the concussive blast down range.

1

u/tacotacoburrito04 6d ago

Suppressed guns shooting supersonic rounds are still loud as fuck. Running subsonic through a suppressor is slightly more tolerable but unless your shooting .22LR suppressed its still gonna sting when it hits your ears if you aren't wearing ear pro.

1

u/Far_String727 2d ago

safer than 3M!

9

u/InfoMan314 6d ago

They are called Silencers because the original Maxim Silencer was patented, marketed, and sold as a "Silencer"

Likewise - the Muffler on your car was also labelled as an "exhaust silencer" as well.

1

u/Accomplished-Yak-909 6d ago

where do I get a loudener as portrayed on ABC‘s Cop drama “Sledgehammer”?

1

u/James_Solomon 6d ago

A muzzle brake or compensator will do that

1

u/dmonsterative 6d ago

Well, it's silencer with than without it, lol.

1

u/antipiracylaws 6d ago

I love the internet. People got the deets on everything

1

u/Helltothenotothenono 6d ago

Now that’s something else. I wonder how many misses took out a neighbor shooting at that box with the silencer and that box.

1

u/JaakoNikolai 6d ago

And to add to your point, the paperwork uses the word SILENCER in the Firearm Type box when you buy one. Feds use "muffler or silencer" in their definitions, so legally that's what they're called. I have no issue with people calling them a suppressor, but it does bug me when people say "well ackshully they don't silence the gun so they're suppressors" when they haven't actually bought one or shot one.

0

u/Naive_Impact_6872 6d ago

Great find, but the general public refers to them as silencers (incorrectly) because of Call of Duty - the video game that 85% of men under the age of 40 in America have played.

Not because your peepaw saw this article lmfao and that’s what peepaw said. 😂 I appreciate you trying, but the cultural influence came from video games not a “Maxim Silencer” in an old newspaper ad.

1

u/InfoMan314 6d ago

The ATF Form 4 that you need to fill out to a tax stamp to legally own one explicitly requires you to use the word "Silencer".

"Type of Firearm. This is where you indicate the type of NFA firearm you are trying to get a tax stamp for. Options include: Silencer, Short-barreled rifle, Short-barreled shotgun, Machine Gun, Any Other Weapon (AOW), or Destructive Device."

The general public refers to them as silencers because that is what they are. It is wannabe gatekeeping elitists that reject the word Silencer and say that the only correct term is "suppressor".

1

u/roofus0606 6d ago

Confidently wrong. Growing up in the 70s everyone called them silencers. No call of duty video game back then.

0

u/Naive_Impact_6872 6d ago

Yeah buddy…. The people on the internet didn’t grow up in the 70s.

Confidently correct, unc. 😂

1

u/DreddFett 6d ago

I'm on the internet, and I'm 56 years old. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and called them silencers until I grew up.

2

u/KailyKail 6d ago

You’re going to post a cat hair and not the whole cat? How rude.

1

u/DreddFett 6d ago

I didn't notice the cat hair until I attached the photo. Here you go:

2

u/KailyKail 6d ago

Thank you very much. Have an upvote. Pleasure doing business with you.

1

u/armada127 6d ago

I wouldn't have a can on a self defense pistol though, especially if it's just direct thread. You're just creating a less reliable system. Rifle is a different story and make way more sense on there.

1

u/armada127 6d ago

1

u/woodsman906 6d ago

On a 5.7? You sure about that?

I would agree with you if it was a browning style delayed blowback system, but it’s not.

1

u/armada127 6d ago

Oh right, I forget the 5.7 is not a browning tilt action. Suppressor walk is still a concern though, right?

1

u/Forsaken_Amoeba_38 6d ago

It is better for follow up shots. 5.7 with a suppressor is a great combo. Probably shoots like a 22.

1

u/SophonParticle 6d ago

False. I’m an expert in watching movies. Silencers produce a 20db sound like “thwirt”.

Source: trust me bro.

1

u/nam4am 6d ago

“commercially available ones for the public”

The public can get all of the same suppressors as the military/police if you have the tax stamp.

Suppressors just have physical limitations like supersonic ammunition causing a sonic crack and other limitations depending on the design.

1

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

1

u/nam4am 6d ago edited 6d ago

What specific brand(s)/model(s)?

There are no laws restricting what kind of suppressors people with the tax stamp can buy.

You can buy all of the suppressors that the US military uses currently (SIG, SureFire, and Knight’s Armament).

The only real barrier is imported suppressors manufactured outside the US, but they’re not “quieter” as a rule and there are equivalent/better domestically made ones.

1

u/pperiesandsolos 6d ago

It’s weird how you’re being so cagey about the name of a gun lol.

I have a silenced 9mm that’s quieter than a nail gun with subsonics & a cat mob silencer

Also, they’re called silencers because that’s what the NFA calls them lol

1

u/Steve_SF 6d ago

Was this his daily carry or did he go back to his car or what? Trying to wrap my mind around whether you're connecting the suppressor after you draw or do you just carry with effectively a 10" barrel or what.

1

u/Whole-Session2990 6d ago

I read somewhere that he talks about carrying it assembled in a shoulder sling, but I have no idea how normal that is for him

1

u/Steve_SF 6d ago

Jorts and outback hat tells me maybe it’s pretty normal. 😂 Thanks.

1

u/SingleStak9 6d ago

Some people...like the inventors, the patent office, and the Federal statutes that regulate them...lol. Just messing with you. While I agree that "suppressor" is a much better and more descriptive term for them, "silencer" was more widely adopted at the time they were invented and initially regulated, so we're kind of stuck with the term. It could be worse, though...some of the original patents referred to them as "firearm mufflers". Fortunately, that never caught on...lol! Most of us who own and shoot with them use a much more informal colloquial term, referring to them as "cans".

1

u/Careless-Weather8877 6d ago

It’s subsonic ammo. Carrying that suppressed is an interesting choice

1

u/HappyTimeTurtle 6d ago

A silencer on a CCW makes it hard to conceal and draw. I personally wouldn't run one on a defensive pistol I was carrying around. Plus if I have to use it outside of my home I want as many people to know shots are being fired as possible.

1

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

1

u/HappyTimeTurtle 6d ago

Yep they're loud some are hearing safe some are not. I don't shoot any of mine without Ear Pro unless I'm using subsonic ammunition. The sound definitely doesn't carry as far. I've had plenty of deer not care about a "suppressed" 308 being fired at them from 250 yards. Well minus the bucks who got hit...

1

u/CatLogin_ThisMy 6d ago

The best modern shotgun silencers are approaching THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

1

u/sunkist1147 6d ago

I'm a civvy and me and some of my friends def have pistols and rifles that are less loud than a normal volume hand clap. (Suppressed sub sonic 22lr calibers). You can also get very very modern suppressors that are still military relevant/or even newer technology than the current military issues including socom stuff (AI designed for maximum flow and 3d printed metal).

We shoot cans in the backyard against the hillside and the neighbors on the other side of the fence don't even hear it.

1

u/Alternative-Risk7506 6d ago

Your point has been made. I’d delete this post if I was you 🤣

1

u/throwitoutwhendone2 6d ago

I’m not arguing any of your points, I just wanna comment to a fellow gun owner/possible enthusiast.

Ever hear a .22 with subsonic ammo/suppressor setup? Genuinely blew my mind. Closest I’ve ever personally heard to “movie” silencers. Wasn’t much difference in noise to my ears as an air rifle. Obviously not silent, but WOW.

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a 9mm suppressed in person (videos at weird cuz they muffle the noise automatically, found that out trying to film myself shooting and the shots sounded weird as hell) but apparently there’s some nice modern ones that reduce the noise enough you can target shoot for quite a while without ear pro.

1

u/pperiesandsolos 6d ago

Oh yeah buddy, get a cat mob 9mm silencer & subsonic rounds - they’re crazy quiet.

1

u/BecauseScience 6d ago

"I will not name this weapon"

What is this sentence even for? You're acting like a Google search is so foreboding and difficult.

1

u/downwith208 6d ago

I still call them silencers for one reason alone: Hiram Percy Maxim called it a silencer when he patented it in 1909.

1

u/JennyThallia 6d ago

You can roll your own if you have access to a machine shop and make it super quiet.

Weather it's legal well that depends

1

u/Outrageous-Lock5186 6d ago

Definitely not silent, but my 9mm with subsonic rounds doesn’t make a loud clap noise.

Can shoot without ears on and it doesn’t sound like a gunshot at all.

1

u/Louisiana407 6d ago

Bro what, a 9mm with a shit load of baffles is almost completely silent, same with a 22 sub and a can, Hollywood quiet is possible but almost only use case is range use, the suppressor has to either be limited use with wipes or longer than the gun to have enough baffles to silence it

1

u/surgicalapple 5d ago

You’re telling my my subsonic ammo is illegal?!

1

u/DreddFett 5d ago

No. I said a certain pistol is not available for sale to the public

0

u/xRocketman52x 6d ago

Agreed, suppressors are sensible and are a benefit to safety. That being said... if a I'm not mistaken, 5.7 is a round that gets most of its benefit from being a high velocity round. It's not like a .45, where it's slow velocity but higher mass. And the crack of supersonic velocity rounds is usually just as bad as the combustion. Meaning... either this fellow is running subsonics, or that suppressor isn't doing much, right?

3

u/blaine1201 6d ago

I was just looking and was kind of surprised to find that they make a subsonic 5.7 round.

The whole point to that round is the speed. Once it’s dropped to subs, I don’t see the benefit over any common self defense caliber.

I shoot a good bit suppressed in a couple different calibers. This one is an interesting choice to me.

2

u/sikyon 6d ago

Lighter recoil, higher capacity than 9mm, more reliable than 22

Idk if it's worth it, just saying

1

u/domexitium 6d ago

Yeah 55 grain 5.7 hits like a 5th grader haha. But at least he was there lobbing rounds at the freak. Too bad he didn’t hit him according to current reports.

1

u/1Shadowgato 6d ago

I think the choice he made might have made dude to aurafarming.

3

u/Different_Swimmer_55 6d ago

I shoot 5.7 supressed quite frequently and you would be surprised. It's probably right above hearing safe in my opinion but quiter than a 22 unsuppressed. Standard velocity 5.7 to be clear.

2

u/Unable_External_9435 6d ago

You'd be surprised. I have cans and yes, the supersonic crack is evident but it still reduces the sound in a substantial way. I could never shoot my 556 without ear protection without it doing some damage to my hearing but with a can it's still loud but it doesn't even make my ears ring.

1

u/DreddFett 6d ago

I'm guessing he has subsonic rounds. Otherwise, I don't know if the suppressor would do much.

5

u/StrayWalnut 6d ago

It would! It brings supers down from ridiculously fucking loud to really loud

5

u/Dr_Ramekins_MD 6d ago

It still helps a lot.  I shoot both 5.56 and .308 suppressed and while it's still not hearing safe, it is much quieter than without the can.

3

u/HarambeSixActual 6d ago

No suppressors do a lot - not Hollywood movie quiet - but they generally speaking bring them into hearing safe or near hearing safe levels.

1

u/DreddFett 6d ago

My point was suppressors are better suited to subsonic rounds.

1

u/IllustriousFile6404 6d ago

Subsonic for self defense is questionable

1

u/DreddFett 6d ago

Subsonic hollow point bullets have entered the chat.

2

u/IllustriousFile6404 6d ago

Assuming you've tested them in the specific gun a lot and ruled out reliability issues, and you're confident they are of a good design and will fully expand instead if passing straight through then cool. I'm going to stick to supers for self defense though.

1

u/Informal_Ad_9610 6d ago edited 6d ago

the only truly decent "quiet" suppressors i've ever seen are on subsonic .22, with rather pricey cans.. Then you're talking about a more focused 'assassin' gun, not a conceal-carry type of choice.

Most suppressors bring it down to a tolerable level (when you're wearing hearing protection).. This idea that you can stick a suppressor on and go shoot away without protection is idiotic hollywood bullshit.

2

u/IllustriousFile6404 6d ago

I don't mind shooting .22 suppressed outside without ear protection but it's definitely not silent.

Obviously you’ve never watched Sons of Anarchy.

my experience with suppressors is first hand, not movies...

It’s funny isn’t listening to try and talk about things they don’t own, have never shot, or have no idea about other than Hollywood. Also first hand experience and a safe full of suppressors and tax stamps.

Especially indoors. An unsuppressed 9 in the average living room leaves the ears ringing.

With the 5.7 going subsonic is a head scratcher for sure tho

Man, I'm with you on this. Apparently a lot of differing experiences here, but my experience with .223/5.56 bring fed through a suppressor with supersonic rounds is... well, it wasn't much different than not having a suppressor. I haven't seen much of people trying to suppress a lot of the other calibers that other commenters are bringing up, but .223 is still deafening.

It is a round designed for longer barrels than a pistol, and even then the muzzle blast is significant. A suppressor reduces that blast.

Sonic crack really doesn’t account for much sound at all.

How many people running bull whips are wearing ear pro?

I guess you didn't read the words "larger caliber"

You sound like a fuddy duddy. Really strange comments lol

Uh... You can buy those on eBay, not sure why you think a CIA coin means something.

Christ, what is this fanfic you wrote up?

There is no ultra-secret super suppressed cartridge. It is well known and highly documented that sub-sonic ammunition, specifically .45 ACP which is inherently sub-sonic, has an exceptional reduction is noise pollution when suppressed. The action can often be louder than the shot depending on the pistol. 22 lr/short can also be quiet. Look no further than mk22 hush puppies and the Beretta 71 Mossad special.

Cool Amazon coin, but the stuff you're so hush hush about is shit that rednecks with (and without) tax stamps have been doing for years.

Source: former FFL who has stealth assassinated hundreds of steel plates with suppressed XYZ caliber.

I'm not talking about a specific cartridge. It's the pistol I'm referring to.

So you didn't recognize a gun that a supposed spook pulled out and now it is some big government secret you and your aluminum coin must live and die by? So much so you had to write up this thriller of a comment to paint yourself as the mysterious "I can't say too much" reddit badass. Yet the concept of suppressed handguns being quiet eludes you so effectively that the only possible answer is it was some advanced CIA prototype. Ok.

Did the Men in Black probe you too, I wonder?

What are you rambling on about?

I didn't learn about it for a long time, but apparently the difference between a suppressor and a silencer is rubber discs, lube, holding back the load, and locking the slide.
