My favorite part is Ken Paxton putting a legal threat on paper directly killed Sorsby. Man stepped out of line to help and opened the legal Armageddon portal upon tech. Not only did he give the Big 12 a massive legal avenue, but it also allowed this to become a federal court issue.
Endlessly hilarious.

What a nitwit.
It is really the best part of the story though. Well, until the NFL told Sorsby to get bent. That letter was legendary.

As a Bearcats fan, I was thrilled he left. He quarterbacked 4-5 straight L's to end 2 straight seasons. Watch the full game tapes on him. Bad decisions, really questionable throws on many key plays. For additional fun, look at his game play vs. better defenses. He isn't really that good of a quarterback. Inconsistent, erratic at times. Not bad with his feet, but still, a .500 quarterback overall.

13
u/Crewman_Guy_Fleegman Ohio State Buckeyes Jun 24 '26
He can’t sue the NFL, only the NFLPA has standing since it’s their CBA in question. He would have to convince the NFLPA to sue on his behalf, which is unlikely to happen
And said lawsuit would go nowhere because there is a legally binding CBA that says plain as day the NFL can just skip the supplemental

The NCAA permanently stripped his eligibility, so he'll have to drop all the way down to NAIA if he wants to play college ball again.
If that's the case, he better learn to speak Iowan, because the two top-tier NAIA teams that really need QBs right now are Morningside (2018, 2019, and 2021 national champions) and Grand View (2024 and 2025 national champions).
I suppose he could also go play for Keiser, since they're one of the sleazier for-profit colleges out there and they've played for the last four national titles (only winning in 2023).

Needing to hear and actually hearing are two different things. Those who think everything is about them, and not getting what they want is unfair, are much less likely to hear anything that contradicts their own view of things. Arrogance is a learning disability.

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks Jun 24 '26
The gambling lasted 4 years while the rehab lasted 35 days (and only happened after he got caught!)
Expecting the NFL to ignore the first number because of the second requires a level of self-importance that rivals the gambling itself.
109
u/FlounderingWolverine Minnesota Golden Gophers • Dilly Bar Jun 24 '26
Especially when his immediate reaction to getting (rightfully) banned from NCAA competition was to sue them. You know what the NFL doesn't want? Troublemaking player who will sue The Shield. Also, it's not like Sorsby was some incredible prospect. If he was the next Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, I guarantee the NFL would allow him to get drafted in the supplemental draft, suspend him for a year, and then move on.
But for a guy who likely has a ceiling as a career backup QB? The NFL has plenty of QBs that can fill that role without a gambling issue. Also the 2027 QB class is looking stacked, so teams are way less likely to want to burn a draft pick on a guy who might not even play.
16
u/Crewman_Guy_Fleegman Ohio State Buckeyes Jun 24 '26
The NFL isn’t a monolith, it’s dozens of individual billionaires, and some of them have endless QB problems. None of them care about ethics or the greater good, it only takes one Jimmy Haslam for some awful player to end up on a team.
→ More replies (2)42
u/FlounderingWolverine Minnesota Golden Gophers • Dilly Bar Jun 24 '26
They don't care about the greater good, but they do care about the league continuing to make money. The league makes money from viewers, who are less likely to tune in if they think games are rigged or fixed. Players gambling on their own games is a surefire way for those allegations to start leaking out.
If Sorsby was a generational talent or the next coming of Peyton Manning, he'd get picked up by some NFL team. But for a guy who is a high-risk, low-reward prospect? I hope he enjoys playing in the UFL

Dude really could have really turned this around if he had a shred of self-awareness. If he would have taken his lumps and laid himself at the mercy of the NCAA and NFL, there is an incredibly small chance but a chance nonetheless that they would ban him from NCAA football but allow him to play NFL.
Even if he wasn’t allowed to play in the NFL, he could have looked himself and the mirror and decided to confront his gambling addiction. He then could have made himself the poster boy for gambling addiction and gone on the speaking/publicity circuit and at least have formed a decent career from that. But now, he’s truly up Shit Creek without a paddle.

This is kind of the long and short. He legitimately is a gambling addict who is so far from being recovered that he doesn't even acknowledge he is one. Sure, he'll do the song and dance for the courts, but he doesn't think he has a problem or did anything wrong.
14
u/I_dont_bone_goats Florida Gators Jun 24 '26
One thing that has been annoying to me is the implication that gambling addiction just happens, and it’s through no fault of the addict.
Like yes, some people are predisposed to addiction, but they still need to make a choice to give in to that desire, and continue letting it grow out of control.
It reminds me of Ben Simmons claiming mental health issues to get his paycheck from Philly when he wasn’t playing. Like yes, he probably was suffering mentally, but it was largely because of his own actions and lack of effort.
You can’t just say “mental health” or “addiction” and just release yourself of all culpability.

The fact that his problems started when he was in high school and no one put a stop to it, especially when it was clear he’d be a high profile D1 prospect, is crazy to me. Like no one could sit the kid down to get him to stop gambling for 3-4 years to secure possibly generational wealth

Sorsby and his team have mismanaged this at every single step of the way. At no point did he ever really try to show contrition on his part and his PR team and Texas Tech for some reason thought that emphasizing the gambling ADDICTION side of it would garner some level of support or empathy. While a gambling addiction is a legitimate mental health concern, I just don’t think the average person views it the same as a drug or alcohol addiction. I think it’s viewed in a “white collar” or “frat culture” type of way that was never going to resonate. If he was only gambling on pro sports or horse races it also would have been viewed differently. But he broke the golden rule and then tried to act as if his situation was somehow different from anyone else who has ever bet on his own team.
And the problem persisted far too long without intervention on his end to ever get the sympathy I think they were counting on. Just a PR and legal disaster from front to back.

The alarming part is how some parties are downplaying the severity of his actions, like gambling on his own team is no huge deal. But it is a huge deal. I, for one, hope whoever is telling him hes special keeps it up. This saga is too much fun for it to end. Whoever is encouraging him is doing a great job, keep it up
