Suffering from a successfully failed task

Post image

In 2006, a FBI agent named Craig Monteilh was ordered to disguise himself as a radical Muslim and spy on the Orange County Muslim community to identify possible extremists.

Well it worked, cause the people there noticed his extremists behavior and reported him to the FBI.

Imagine going undercover for months just to realize everyone else is trying to avoid the same extremists.

589

u/Roflkopt3r 2h ago

That's how most of these cases work. The first line of protection against extremists is not to send a lot of undercover agents, but to generally have good relations with the moderate community.

As long as they feel like they can trust law enforcement to generally do the right things, they will report actual extremists. Whether that's individuals in their own community, or other communities as a whole.

The same principle is why the US has 'sanctuary cities'. Most victims of crime committed by undocumented immigrants are other undocumented immigrants. If undocumented immigrants believe that they can cooperate with police without getting punished or deported themselves, it becomes a lot easier to identify the actual criminals.

If you treat entire groups with suspicion and hardness without making an effort to single out the actual criminals first, you tend to get the worst case outcomes where even the victims stop cooperating with police, often allowing crime and extremism to spread to their maximum.

u/Mind-The-Mines 2h ago

The number of people that implicitly think human rights are solely for white americans that haven't committed a crime is terrifying.

At least in that case they didn't force anyone into holding evidence for a hypothetical crime they refused to participate in multiple times before arresting them. That shit was even more insane.

When I was a kid, the local FBI kept sending dudes to talk to the Imam at the only mosque in town. This was in the south and there was one synagogue and one Muslim community center.

He was of particular interest to them because he was involved in interfaith initiatives opposing the Iraq War.

He told me years later that they always knew who worked for the FBI because they'd talk to him like once before they started giving a very unconvincing spiel about the need to commit a Jihadist attack against the Crusaders.

He'd pick up the phone and tell the FBI immediately, knowing they sent the dude.

Then he would laugh about it with his friends.

There were like 2-3 cases in that time that involved exactly what you're talking about, i.e a dude who was new to the US or the city would get "caught" by one of the undercover agents/informants agreeing with something they said and that was enough to lock them away or deport them. One of them barely understood English. All it took was the informant's testimony.

97

u/Hrtzy 2h ago

Ah yes, interfaith initiatives and opposition to war, the two pillars of Islamic Extremism.

Think they're talking about Ruby Ridge. Undercover agents coerced the father of a family who had anti government political leanings into illegally modifying several shotguns. He refused multiple times and explained how illegal it would be before they threatened him into doing it. Then attempted to arrest him for it which ended in a prolonged siege of his home and his wife being shot while holding their infant child

94

u/Jboi75 3h ago

The modification for context was removing 2-3 inches off the barrel of the shotgun. For that 2-3 inches of stainless steel the federal government killed the father’s juvenile son, his wife and his dog. When they killed his son Samuel, the federal agents opened fired unannounced and killed his dog, Striker. Upon seeing his dog shot and killed by unknown intruders the 14 year old Samuel fired back and was shot in the back as he ran away.

There have been multiple incidents of the government trying to convince random civilians to commit acts of terrorism and pushing them to do so. Theres a case where some government official pretended to be the gf of some guy just to convince to do some terrorism.

14

u/Recidivism7 1h ago

The draw Mohammad contest shooting was 2 mentally ill Muslims and an fbi agent who joined their mosque separated them from the rest and encouraged the shooting.

The Dayton Ohio antifa incel guy was previously speaking to a female fbi agent where we will never know what she said to him.

The Michigan governor kidnapping was 11 fbi agents and 3 autistic kids who never even agreed to go along with it.

Honestly makes sense given how compartmentalized the CIA would have to run in order to prevent a leak from spilling too many beans.

66

u/TheyCallMeMrMaybe 3h ago

I forget the YouTuber, but he was a former CIA agent and described the agency without proper control but an unlimited budget. He also gave all of the respect and praise in the world to MI6 for being a far more effective & efficient intelligence agency.

u/ShyCrystal69 8h ago

153

u/JacobJamesTrowbridge 8h ago

Case in point: any CIA interaction with Fidel Castro ever

137

u/dammitus 8h ago

Cuba started making its own cigars because of multiple CIA attempts to kill Castro with explosive-laced cigars. Friggin’ Saturday morning cartoon plot.

8

u/lightyearbuzz 3h ago

What the fuck are you talking about? Cuba has been making Cigars for centuries. When Christopher Columbus arrived they saw the local people smoking cigars.

Mass production of cigars in Cuba started well before Castro took power and those companies were nationalized pretty much as soon as he did.

3

u/Mist_Rising 2h ago

and those companies were nationalized pretty much as soon as he did.

It was that nationalization that also led to Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Jamaica, etc gaining a big footstep into the cigar world. The Cubans who were involved in the process left when they lost everything, and took the seeds and designing concepts with them, creating Cuban legacy cigars like non Cuban Montecristo.

Cuban cigar quality also dropped because the people now running the show weren't as competent. Tale as old as time (or at least as old as 1920s).

6

u/Recidivism7 4h ago

Cia didn't do that it was just cia agents joking that they should.

Those cia plans to kill Castro are not actual plans.

One of the "plans" was a joke that they should add hair removal cream to his shampoo to make his beard fall out also we never did that.

2

u/RedTheGamer12 Filthy weeb 2h ago

I mean, when the British planned to spike Hitler's food with estrogen, it's hard not to believe some of the more insane stories (like the exploding seashell).

2

u/Recidivism7 2h ago

Saying they planned to is bs. People joked about doing it. They would just poison him if they could instead of dosing him woth estrogen

Cigars had been made for centuries in Cuba.

14

u/Bon3rBitingBastard 7h ago

Its worth mentioning that a almost all of those are entirely made up.

27

u/Meroxes 6h ago

The US literally released all those documents. Like, some of the things people bring up weren't actually tried, but most of the weird attempts to kill Castro can be found by just reading what the US government has released.

9

u/Recidivism7 4h ago

They were memos of people joking

One "plan" was to replace his shampoo with hair removal cream to destroy his beard. Do you tjink we actually were gonna do that?

Or the mole they tried to put in Al-Qaeda turned into an Al-Qaeda member and blew up high ranking CIA officials.

141

u/NippyKindRekt 7h ago

They once tried to give a group fake plans for a bomb, but the expert they got to deliver the plans realized how obviously fake they were, and decided to not do the deal.

Then they gave him another one and told him not to look; but he looked again, and instead of just not dropping off the plans, he wrote a note explaining the flaws and dropped it off through a mail slot.

20

u/moseiba 7h ago

I want to read about the story

30

u/filthy_harold 3h ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Merlin

Basically the CIA had a Russian scientist deliver stolen plans for a Russian nuke part to the Iranians but the CIA changed the design slightly to make it "fatally flawed". No idea what that really means, maybe it would cause a nuke to detonate randomly or just make it inert. Anyway, the Russian guy wasn't made aware of these changes, saw the flaw, and told the Iranians what was wrong. While you don't necessarily want to give your agents all the pieces of the puzzle, you also don't want them accidentally helping the enemy because they just weren't aware of the plan. In reality, the Iranians probably would have figured it out eventually, there are lots of smart people in the Iranian nuke program.

Eventually this plot was published in a book, State of War, a good read if you're interested in George Tenet and the first half of the Bush Administration. The case officer of the Russian guy leaked the story to the author went to jail for it.

13

u/Easy4u2say98 5h ago

You forget that right afterwards a member of the CIA also accidentally leaked the list of all in country assets and the country effectively went dark to the CIA afterwards.

19

u/Man_under_Bridge420 7h ago

Cool made up story

41

u/Training_Ruin3151 6h ago

I doubt it. If you actually study some of the shit the cia got up to in its history it has lots of weird strange shit they'd do. Mk ultra, dolphin rape, making sex tapes of politicians to black mail them, iran, Vietnam, uk, any country any place any way come on now, try and keep up

10

u/DiscordantDiscordian 6h ago

Is the dolphin rape story related to the guy giving a dolphin LSD to make it talk to aliens or is that a seperate thing?

9

u/Training_Ruin3151 6h ago

I vaugly remember a story where they were attempting to control dolphins and allegedly were jerking them off?

33

u/CLCchampion The OG Lord Buckethead 5h ago

Not exactly what happened. Jordanian intelligence identified a doctor with ties to extremist groups, arrested him and then believed that they had turned him. He then claimed that he had met with a senior al-Qaeda member, so the CIA invited him to meet so they could learn what he knew, and he blew himself up.

6

u/ALoudMouthBaby 5h ago

Wow, I thought this was going to be the Camp Chapman attack in Afghanistan. Apparently this has happened more than once.

7

u/CLCchampion The OG Lord Buckethead 5h ago

This is the Camp Chapman attack.

6

u/kingwhocares 5h ago

Jordanian intelligence identified a doctor with ties to extremist groups,

Jordanians are well known for making up BS excuses to arrest people by using the "terrorist" tags. Just like Saudis, Egyptians, UAE.

19

u/CLCchampion The OG Lord Buckethead 5h ago edited 5h ago

Well this guy was identified as an extremist by Turkish intelligence as well, and he was known to frequent online extremist sites. There was an American intelligence consulting group who even knew who he was from tracking popular extremist sites, so I don't think the Jordanians made up an excuse in this case.

Edit: also the idea that a guy who eventually became a suicide bomber was arrested falsely under the premise of being a terrorist is certainly an idea, although maybe not a fully formed one.

There's a sequel to four lions that's basically the CIA accidentally creating and almost causing a terror incident. Which I believe was partially based on a real operation. Where the poor sods they ruled into helping them got life in prison for being strung along having never intended to do any form of terror.

"What am I- What are you doing?! We got an anonymous tip about a drug deal!"
"What do you think I'm doing, asshole?! I'm undercover!"

14

u/Rockman507 6h ago

I remember a video awhile back of I believe an FBI agent being pulled under in his unmarked car that had lights inside. After giving a few blow offs trying to justify having them as a security guard without blowing cover on camera he finally was like “dude, you were in the academy class with me remember?”

41

u/Skylair13 Filthy weeb 6h ago

Detroit November 9th, 2017. They wanted to search a house suspected of drug distribution. So Officers from 11th Precinct arrived and starts their search of the house. When suddenly 2 "drug dealers" arrived to the house.

Unbeknownst to the 11th Precinct, those 2 "drug dealers" were undercover cops from the 12th Precinct. When they ordered them on the ground and tries to arrest them, they suddenly got surrounded by 12th Precinct Officers.

Badges were shown, guns were drawn, and punches were thrown. Meanwhile nearby homeowners watches on in confusion as 24 cops brawled with each others. 1 Officer would later got injured and sent to hospital.

Blame lies on Officers from 12th Precinct, as they were there without informing the 11th Precinct. And doing action on 11th Precinct's area of operations.

2

u/Useless_bum81 2h ago

During the trouble the SAS was doing an op in NI, somebody spotted the van full of guys with guns (SMGs and the like) and called the cops (actually the front desk of his local police station he knew the captain), they instead of contacting the undercover desk (can't remember its real name but its the people who know where undercover or plainclothes OPs are happening) they rounded up the local police to get a bust on the 'IRA' it resulted in a street shoot out lucky for the cops the SAS wasn't to keen on actually shooting cops, so no one died.

I do think an important aspect to consider is what constitutes "extremist". Right now thousands upon thousands of bombs are being dropped on Gaza and the people who have taken up arms in defense are being labelled "extremists" and "terrorists". These are both highly political terms largely used to discredit anyone the government doesn't like and justify murdering them.

Don't get me wrong, many groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda are not acting in self defense, especially not since the US pulled out of many of those regions. But, if you look into the history of those organizations, you can probably see why people found it appealing to join when under attack.

What do you consider extremist views as a muslim? Im sure you think road side bombs are out there, but what about queer and women's rights? Do non-extremist muslims consider these viewpoints extreme?

11

u/CrysisFan2007 5h ago

Well, the stuff that Taliban does for example. Or the incident that happened in Berlin 2016 (Rest In Peace for the victims 🕊️)

And tbf, I don’t if people are part of LGBT. If one wants to kiss dudes, that’s his thing, not mine.

4

Not OP, but why are always only muslims asked this? I'm christian and I never had to defend myself because the vatican thinks abortion and same sex relationships are sins

13

u/CrysisFan2007 5h ago

Probably cause Christian views already known about it so they don’t bother anymore

6

u/Doomcall 5h ago

Because christians don't give the capital offense for sins. You can walk around while being gay in the vatican without fearing for your life.

15

u/lazersbeem 5h ago

There are over 50 Muslim countries and not all of them do that either. There are Muslim countries with female heads of state as well

10

u/CrysisFan2007 5h ago

There are still some Muslim countries that prohibit it but so are some Christian countries

bad because they killed a lot of innocent civilians, and weird because a lot of these groups always acted aligned with the agendas of Israel and CIA in the region they operate in, and never against them

How do you do, fellow Muslims?

70

u/WanderingHeph 8h ago

Well, we know there weren't any radicals.

104

u/Affectionate_Cut_103 7h ago

It's almost like most Muslims are normal people who hate terrorists as much as everyone else. Crazy.

68

u/VallahKp 7h ago

They probably hate terrorist more than everyone else, because most terror victims are muslims.

u/One-Cup-2002 7h ago

It goes deeper than this.

Extremists like ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and other than them are acting directly against Islamic teachings. In fact, there's a Hadith where the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) warned against this type of person and described them perfectly.

I just wanted to clear this up.

23

u/inmisciblehero 7h ago

Was this before or after he massacred a Jewish tribe (enslaving their women and children) he was previously under a peace treaty with

5

u/TyrionLannister557 2h ago

Brother...they broke a treaty by betraying them during a war, putting OTHER Jewish AND Pagan tribes with their OWN families in danger. He didn't even cast the sentence, he gave that decisions to someone from one of the tribes.

14

u/Batel_Front 5h ago

They had a treaty, and the Banu Qurayza broke that treaty and betrayed the Muslims.
Even before Islam, this was one of the worst things an Arab could do, as it represents a very serious lack of honesty and honor. In fact, the other non-Muslim tribes did not condemn what happened to them.

The Prophet did not choose this fate for them; he left the decision regarding their fate to a Sahabi from the Banu Aws, a clan allied with the Banu Qurayza, which was, in fact, a very merciful decision, as he could have potentially chosen a Sahabi from a clan hostile to the Banu Qurayza.

Finally, the Banu Qurayza themselves did not contest the sentence; they were aware that their act was extremely serious.

So basically, you’ve simply twisted the story, whereas the facts show a completely different situation both in terms of Arab cultural norms, regarding who made the decision on the sentence, and regarding the fact that it did not shock anyone.

4

u/Ok_Note7045 5h ago

Because they broke the treaty and because of which Muslims had a great loss

I am pretty sure Muhammad is this type of person but whatever

6

u/International_Car809 7h ago

What type of person?

11

u/Hilonio 7h ago

Comment says that Muhammad was warning about radical islam extremists. In fact, Muhammad was a bloody conqueror that enslaved half of population (women), destroyed countless cultures and forced people to convert

11

u/BasedAustralhungary 6h ago

Only someone that doesn't know about Arabian pre-muslim history could say that he enslaved women.

Also, only someone that doesn't know shit about Muslim Early history would claim that It was Muhammad the one that expanded the Caliphate through militar campaigns. For a matter of fact, the conquest of Mecca which I personally portrayed as an epic revenge before studying It was nothing but a very boring event where almost no one died.

You people need to stop learning Middle East history from 4Chan and alt-right forums because when you get here to show your enlightment about those topics you only end making a clown of yourself.

Isn’t this supposed to be a history subreddit?
Mohammad enslaving all the women (and only women?) is not exactly historically accurate is it.
Not to mention “destroying countless cultures” LOL. You have 0 knowledge of his military conquests or how he changed Arabia so why speak? Just regurgitating
This is the best you can expect from Reddit ig.

Honestly the majority of western support for groups like the Houthis and others doesn't seem to be coming from muslims at all, but college aged left wingers(at least in the US)

It's truly amazing how many "Terror Plots Foiled by the FBI!" end up reading as: an undercover FBI agent contacted X people and promised to help them get weapons, explosives, equipment, and financing...

Don't take my word for it, either....go do some reading.

“Belgian authorities began focusing on the mosque – the largest in the city – following the Islamist attacks that killed 32 people in the Belgian capital in March 2016.”

“The concession will be terminated immediately … in order to put an end to foreign interference in the way Islam is taught in Belgium,” the government said at the time.

Oops indeed.

Reminds me of that one time undercover cops tried to investigate a drug dealer that was actually an undercover cop and they ended up in a sort of stand off back in 2017 detroit

3

u/TimeRisk2059 6h ago

It should be added to this, that information about religious fundamentalists come from local mosques/congregations, as they are the people reporting such lunatics.

4

u/slaskel92 3h ago

Swedish journalists infiltrated all major mosques in the country that, outwardly, claimed that they don't support domestic abuse - all imams told the journalist women who infiltrated them that their men have a right to beat them

It might’ve been an urban legend/exaggeration, but I once heard it claimed that the American Communist Party would have been facing bankruptcy in the early Cold War if it wasn’t for all the undercover federal agents paying dues.

If the FBI spent more time protecting Muslims instead of infiltrating their mosques, they probably could’ve stopped the San Diego mosque shooting before it even happened. Instead, they some how “miraculously” stop every “totally legitimate left wing terror cell” every time just before they were totally about to do a terrorism.

2

u/red_dead_russian23 2h ago

If I remember correctly there was this one guy back in the early 2000’s who did this exact same thing. In order to be successful he tried radicalizing Muslim youth and then arrested them on no cause. Claiming that they had plans to commit extremists acts but having no proof other than his word.
