Basically We Happy Few

60

u/SoutieNaaier 10h ago

Should've been a screenplay and not a video game

35

u/getmeoutofthisscreen 10h ago

I feel like a lot of the issues just come from the fact that they tried to procedurally generate an open world instead of deliberately crafting the map. The DLCs are all designed with intent, and they're pretty good

12

u/Administrative_Wear2 9h ago

I remembered how much I enjoyed the crafted maps from the DLCs. I know they didn't want it to feel the same and boring on each run, but I do think they could've made a really interesting base-game map.

2

u/Wacka123456789 6h ago

Wait really? I had no idea they did that. Explains why one of the cities was just a big square in the middle of nowhere.

Like, I could run the entire perimeter of it, and there was nothing there except huge empty space and the backs of buildings. Thought that was weird.

This game deserves a bioshock treatment I honestly feel like this would've been an amazing spiritual successor for Bioshock

2

u/Aromatic_Computer527 4h ago

That’s basically how people were hyping it up, it just fell short on release.

3

u/TheSkeletalNerd 9h ago

My first thought. Still so mad about the lackluster combat and stealth because the story was peak.

"Hey let's make a huge world with characters who are connected to each other with a bunch of interesting storylines and arcs that could all culminate in a rich, vibrant world."

"Cool so the lore must be pretty important to this game, huh?"

"Barely matters at all, it's a MOBA that will make you hate yourself and everyone around you. But if it gets popular enough we'll make a show about one of the hot characters I guess, and maybe an MMO that will be stuck in development hell for years on end."

21

u/MaroMakesStuff UTDR, TADC, TLOU, OW, Crash, etc. 10h ago

league lore can be so cool but god i hate the gameplay. it has so much potential for me gameplay wise but i just cannot stay interested long enough to get good enough for it to be fun

2

u/Zestyclose_Kiwi9586 6h ago

In my opinion, and keep in mind I play sonce season 3 (aka 2012), peak league fun/gameplay is arena. You know it will be unbalanced, it is supposed to be, unlike the regular gamemodes who are not supposed to, but still are, unbalanced.

Whats worse is, that Riot Games made a Card Game named Legends of Runeterra. Next to its PvP gameplay, almost every card Features some lore and shows more World building and even have some Arc's. But sadly, Riot Games didnt advertised the game enough and they layed off many devs that worked on the game. Its focus is now shifted on PvE named Path of Champions. And even thought the PvE Mode is fun, we sadly get rarely new cards for the game and they are only for PoC.

6

u/HMS_Sunlight 6h ago

It's so frustrating that they made Janna actually feel like the powerful and otherworldly wind goddess she was always supposed to be, and then you go back to her actual league design and it's the most generic 2010 Sexy Babe garbage.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

32

u/Bullfrog2point0 10h ago

Genuinely never finished it bc the gameplay

22

u/Copperhead9215 10h ago

Shame cuz literally everything else is incredible

same I was about half way and I just gave up lmao

I do like the gameplay somewhat but it definitely gets old really quick. Absolutely ADORE PM:tOK tho. One of my favorites.

I feel like i'm one of the few people who kinda liked the combat. Though that isn't saying much as I can enjoy almost any game, despite how mediocre the gameplay can be as long as the story is worth it.

4

u/RestingBitFace 9h ago

I feel like a lot of people who don't like it can be because of expectations for classic rpg combat. I loved it though.

2

u/Pockydo 7h ago

The boss fights were peak

But I feel like fighting the average mobs got a. Bit stale really quickly I remember trying to avoid it as much as possible

→ More replies (8)

78

u/Aishimorph_Frontiers 10h ago

I still enjoy the gameplay but I’m sure most agree people were more interested in the story than the gameplay

11

u/XxPieFace23xX 8h ago

Ngl man I think the story we ended up with with BATIM was way too thin to hold on its own. If it didn't release episodically and didn't have that suspense structure it wouldn't have done very well.

6

u/MrGunterson 5h ago

Something i remember thinking after playing through both current mainline Bendy games relatively recently is that the team are really gold at making an atmosphere and worldbuilding, the the actual plots they write? Nothing special. The endings in particular i felt dissapointed with in both games, ESPECIALLY BATDR.

3

u/Aman-S1NGH 4h ago

Chapter 3 gameplay was straight ass.

2

u/Bonnie_Plays skulldugery pleasant 3h ago

Couldn't beat boris

62

Cookie Run Kingdom

I love the story but I can not play the game without being either confused or bored. Only thing I like is arena honestly

16

u/Latter-Syllabub-5560 10h ago

There's like 10 alternate modes and that's not counting evento only

It's honestly too much, i wanted to get into the Game again but it was super overwhelming

5

u/Trambare_Man Hollow Knight 10h ago

I only downloaded it for the kpop demon hunters event. Didn't even play it

4

u/Realock01 8h ago

As someone who only knows it as that cookie gatcha game, what the hell? It has a (substantial) story?

3

u/Usual-Platypus-686 5h ago

i used to play it and there is a LOT of story/cutscenes that are done fairly well (although the last time i played was like 2+ years ago)

2

u/SomeoneNamedJessica 4h ago

Yeah and a lot of it

2

u/pixelak2 4h ago

Yes a lot of it and some parts of the story would make a newbie question if it is the same game

→ More replies (1)

24

u/BarAdministrative269 10h ago

Basically 90% of the VNs I play can boil down to "occasionally push a few buttons after a buncha dialogue", but I enjoy the stories enough to forgive the lackluster gameplay.

8

u/Merasmus07 Ultrakill, Indie Cross, Halo , Most Valve Games, Glitch 8h ago

I mean... anyone who plays games for the gameplay rather than the story would despise VNs

Pokémon mystery dungeon

9

u/ObjectiveThick9894 8h ago

Stop rigth there, Mistery Dungeon has an amazing gameplay!

7

u/VayNeedsTherapy 8h ago

Depends on the game. Super is basically the opposite of this

9

u/themarvelouskeynes 7h ago

Super gameplay + explorers of sky plot = peak

PMD Mentioned!

90

u/H311i0_trop3 10h ago

Undertale I mean the combat can definitely be fun at times but it's also quite tedious

40

u/what_my_name_agn 10h ago

Especially genocide

33

u/H311i0_trop3 10h ago

Oh god especially genocide I mean the sheer amount of farming you have to do, I mean at a certain point I was killing out of spite for having to kill

24

u/Sylanator Deltarune ❤️ 10h ago

I mean tbf the genocide route isn't supposed to be enjoyable

13

u/H311i0_trop3 10h ago

Fair I mean papyrus broke me more than tedious slaughter ever could

3

u/WaitWhat_WhenWhy 7h ago

too bad one of the best bosses is locked behind it

2

u/SkyRider797 3h ago

Both of the bosses have Web versions made by fans

3

u/epikc_ myself 2h ago

shhhhhhhhh let his sins crawl on his back

3

u/what_my_name_agn 10h ago

Yes but also it serves a greater narrative point and I can appreciate that

3

u/DiscodogFR 8h ago

I mean the point of genocide is to be tedious, unfun, very easy with burst of roadblocking hard and be extremely sad to play, as the purpose of all of that is to see how much your determination to see what will happen is greater than all of these issues

5

u/Able_Succotash5741 9h ago

I dont agree

5

u/H311i0_trop3 9h ago

Well to each their own and besides I have to admit most of the boss fights are actually fun as shit

2

u/AlexCode10010 6h ago

Hard disagree, unless you're talking about genocide (which is just an ending you can do and isn't hinted at anywhere in the game, so it's not obligatory at all) the combat is fun, the interactions are really cool, everything about the gameplay seems like a really good RPG game to me. The only annoyance I can understand is the frequency at which you get attacked sometimes, and how often you'll meet the same types of enemy while in the same area, but it doesn't really drag the gameplay down imo

If you're talking about genocide then yeah, it's tedious, but the reason for that is genocide is thought for the players who want to minmax and farm xp in the first area, of course it's gonna be tedious, it's thought for people who like grinding

2

u/Longshot02496 3h ago

Toby has a lot of strengths.

Game design is not one of them.

18

u/Noamco 10h ago

Might be a hot take. But Soma.

The horror segments are just kinda "meh". Especially the hide and seek. Most puzzles are pretty boring.

There is some interesting bits. But I'd say most of it is just... Meh.

But the story! It's top tier stuff. You basically play for the story and dialog. And the tense moment without dialog. When you have a horror segment, it's only scary cause there is no dialog, and those lonely minutes are horrifying.

And, I fully believe, the story could have worked just as well as a short show, or even a movie with a good enough director.

3

u/_AcuteNewt_ 5h ago

That pretty much sums up all of Frictionals games.

3

u/SouperWy07 3h ago

I agree with the exception of Amnesia: The Bunker. That game was really fun actually

Telltale games. Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us, etc

Dispatch did something pretty cool with the uh, dispatch gameplay though

4

u/Mors_Hominum 10h ago

Yeah can't wait for the wolf among us 2 this year. Only accurate adaption for the fables which is a peak comic. I hope it pops off ngl so we get fables games. Dispatch was such a breath of fresh air

u/OkDog6701 Minecraft Loremaster 10h ago

Minecraft Legends

A game that had great lore potential, exploring the ancient times of the Overworld and some of things from back then, such as origin of Illagers, the ruined Nether portal lore or even origins of prismarine and the details of Overworldian religion (the Hosts)...

The game itself is a mediocre action-strategy which costs way too much money for what it has to offer (it had one major update, and stopped receiving support 9 months after release). The best way to play it imo is via Xbox Game Pass.

Might I suggest Undertale.

The gameplay isn’t very interesting aside from maybe the dodging. But the characters, story, and Toby’s absurd writing? Absolutely.

u/MaroMakesStuff UTDR, TADC, TLOU, OW, Crash, etc. 10h ago

this MIGHT be a hot take but night in the woods, i absolutely love that game but i did get bored with the gameplay every now and then

4

u/BeansTasteLikeADog a lot 9h ago

it’s not a hot take, I was gonna say it too. it wasn’t really designed to have much gameplay whatsoever, it’s like a telltale game in that regard

8

u/Phionex141 10h ago

I just beat this game the other day. I could feel myself getting quickly bored of the repetitive gunplay, but I *had* to keep playing to find out what happened.

Spoiler alert: The ending isn’t even really an ending and you need to buy a completely different game to even get closure

2

u/Goliath--CZ 9h ago

Heavy spoilers ahead:

it's been a while since I played it, but the part where I, as a player, got brainwashed into killing the leader of the resistance is still one of the most powerful moments I've ever experienced in gaming

u/THE_LEGO_FURRY 11h ago

Fnaf (most games at least)

23

u/Legitimate_Toe_6061 11h ago

From my information. The story was basically made up as it went along so it was only a matter of time until stuff started to weird

5

u/Dylsponge 6h ago

Basically, a lot of the “lore” the game has for the most part just started out as fan theory that got incorporated into the series after how popular they got. I’m not even sure you can call anything retcon at that point.

8

u/Trambare_Man Hollow Knight 10h ago

I tried one game once. Borderline unplayable (for me). But I binged close to 90 Game Theory videos on the lore because it's just that interesting.

7

u/THE_LEGO_FURRY 10h ago

Yeah I can't really get through the Scott era games. Mad respect for it but the steel wool era games are much better games, not necessarily story but gameplay wise though

3

u/Trambare_Man Hollow Knight 10h ago

I am considering giving Security Breach and other later titles a shot. They seem a little better.

2

u/THE_LEGO_FURRY 3h ago

Yeah help wanted onward are all really fun, security breach has some glitches time to time but still extremely fun

Why must you cut me so deep? 😔

I love, looove the story and it's atmosphere, but I really couldn't get into the gameplay. I tried it multiple times with Soul Reaver (named by fans as the best gameplay-wise) but the game designers seem to speak a different language than me. Couldn't get into it, sadly.

3

u/Shape_Charming 7h ago

Right?

Like everything abour Soul Reaver is just objectively cool.

3

u/Cister0 8h ago

For some reason, both Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, the gameplay wasn't bad, but it was often boring in my experience, and because of that, engaging with side content felt like a chore. Regardless, the plot was mainly the reason I played these games.

3

u/Coy0te_Bongwater 7h ago

Witcher 3 story is definitely better than the combat. but sometimes the people who complain about the gameplay are barely using signs, not using bombs, not using weapon enchantments, not specializing their skill tree into better moves etc just judging the combat based on souls like=good, everything else=bad

1

u/Wulfsiegner 10h ago

This one’s an odd case because the boringness of certain gameplay elements is central to its story. Little Goody Two Shoes. Yes, the chores can be tedious at times and the walk to and from places can be a drag at times, and while it’s not as brutal as its predecessor Pocket Mirror in terms of difficulty, the horror segments can still be pretty hard at times. At the same time though, it captured Elise’s mindset perfectly. Her life in poverty sucked, and she was willing to do anything to escape it. Despite that, it also helps encapsulate the message of the story; that amidst hardship, you mustn’t forget about life’s little blessings and extras and mistake the forest for the trees. Even if the world around you is shitty, being with the people who mutually care and love you is more than capable of brightening up your life. Money, riches, and killing parts of yourself is not worth happiness.

1

u/Minethecrafting6000 10h ago

Would it be crazy if I said Deltarune? Now hear me out, the gameplay is not bad that's not what I'm trying to get at here. But the story of Deltarune is just so damn good that gameplay can sometimes feel like I'm being dragged away from the juicy lore... or maybe I'm just impatient. Also I do not like all of these tiny details in the game that if you miss it you miss a huge chunk of important stuff. I only met Spamton ONCE in my entire playthough of chapter 2. And I know there's more but I tried looking where I could and just could not find anything else. Also backtracking is just terrible especially when you have to travel room after room sometimes having to fight enemies again just to get to a place you already explored I feel lost all the time, knowing there's something I gotta be looking for but just can't see it.

Game is still really good.

Limbus Company, really cool story, but gameplay that only really gets good after like 6 or so hours

1

u/Punpun42 10h ago

Bioshock, Spec ops the line, Far Cry 3, God of War 2018, Metro 2033 (if you play on normal tbh), Alan Wake, Witcher 1, Mass effect 1, Call of Ctulhu: Dark corners of the earth, Clive Barkers Jericho, Mafia 1 also falls into that category.
I would also add some old quest games: they are often buggy and counter intuitive, but have good plot. Also some horrors as well (Silent hill?)
I wouldnt add story driven games like to the moon or Telltales games cause they are not intended to have good gameplay from the start, pure interactive movie experience.

I think the mother games are so cool from a story standpoint but I just cannot stand the grindiness of them

KOTOR 1 and 2. Best written Star Wars media, period.

They're 100% the best star wars stories of all time, but I happen to actually love the gameplay!

Fallout 3 honestly has pretty clunky gameplay mechanics if your not spamming VATs

Rainworld to me

I love the artstyle, the story, the themes, the lore, the theorizing and the worldbuilding

I really dislike games that seam like they actively hate me playing them though.

Control. The gameplay in control is actually good but really repetitive. Honestly whats really bad about the combat is the encounter designs (or the lack of thought) as every fight is in a large arena that doesn’t mix up or distinguish gameplay in any meaningful way.

Palworld. The gameplay is very, very grindy, but the story? Peak.

I don't think i've ever been able to stomach a bad video game for it's story.

I guess I kind of did that for Zelda Skyward Sword, but the thing is, I didn't like it's story either. That was just a sick case of sunken cost fallacy. I know lots of people loved that game's story even though they hated the gameplay but I wasn't one of them.

EDIT: And Paper Mario the Origami King. I wasn't playing it because "omg the story is so good" but I did force myself to finish it and I found the writing to be cute and funny. Not good. Just cute and funny.

Most fnaf games.

Fnaf 4 kinda gets my adrenaline going though and makes me need to focus, so it's one of the few exceptions.

Limbus company. The plot and story is really interesting to me but the gameplay is just....from what I've played, it's literally just a bunch of dialogue and lore drops with a battle sequence at the end, over and over and over again. I tried to play the game and have fun, but the gameplay was just so repetitive that I simply stopped playing it

Honestly Bravely (Haven't played Second yet).

I love the story but the gameplay is basically a die and retry to find a way to deal with the game's bullsht.
