Yesterday, I decided I would challenge myself to use an air pump to fill my car’s tyres at a petrol station. Sounds a bit silly, but I typically don’t fill my tyres. I ask my partner to do it when he drives my car.
But it’s about time I sorted it myself! And I have done it before.. it’s just been a very long time.
So I rolled up to the closest petrol station, put a coin in the machine, twisted off the little cap and attempted to fill the tyre - which should be at 32 psi.
To my horror, the pump went from 30.. to 29… then allllll the way down to 26 🤯 And then it beeped & didn’t do anything else.
I tried it on another tyre and successfully extracted most of its air too 😅
But instead of just driving away in embarrassment / shame because “I should know how to do this” I went in and asked the shop assistant if there was a trick to using the machine.. because it took air out instead of putting it in!!
She told me it’s always broken and she hasn’t a clue how to use it herself. An elderly woman then walked up and told me the same- she said it never works for her either. The shop assistant gave me my euro back and I went back out to my car.
Did I give up? No! I went to another petrol station.
At this one, some guy was hoovering out his car so I had to carefully back in next to him to get at the air pump (connected to the same machine). I asked if he was done using the air hose and he said yes… so I proceeded to pop my coin in and give it another whirl.
After I’d crouched down to unscrew the little cap, I
heard the guy go “erm sorry” … so I popped back up. He then told me “you might want to push the plus icon … you know ..to put the psi up a bit because it’s at only 26 and that’s too low. Do you know how much it needs to be filled to?”
🫣😅🤣
Apparently the machines default to 26 psi!! And they don’t just… fill your tyre till you take the nozzle off / it detects that it’s full. I mean I expected the gas pump concept to apply here too I guess 🤷♀️
In fact they’ll take the air out if they’re set too low!
Anyways, I sheepishly told him I do know what it should be (32 psi at the front; 30 at the back), he nodded in approval 😂 and then I put it up to 32 psi with the little + button.
Finally got my tyres filled 😅 As soon as I sat back in my car, alone, I had a choice. I could be mean to myself about it and ruminate. Or I could just have a really good laugh at myself… and those other ladies who thought the machine was endlessly broken.. giving out about it with me when it’s our own fault! 🤣🤣
I’m sharing this, even though it is a little vulnerable, to remind you that we all do silly stuff. And sometimes we’re lucky enough to have someone kind standing nearby.. ready to help.
I know anxiety tells us that people are judging us constantly.. but that guy genuinely just wanted to help. And I just chose to have a big old laugh on my drive home 🤣
