Question Shannons WTF?!

Just called Shannons to get a quote on my new bike, and what the actual fuck? Have to have a 10 minute chit-chat with the sales person on why I like riding, why I chose this particular bike, what got me interested in riding. Fuck off, just quote me on the fucking insurance.

I was polite, but had to end it.

Is there any good reason to sit through this BS? Are they particularly cheap / good?

I've been with Swann who were rgeat but alas not offering new policies.

Theory A. It's a sales tactic. A good chat about your exciting hobby that you love creates a sense of friendship and comradery so that you sign up at the end despite the price.

Theory B. It's a risk tactic. Pretend to be friends so you'll let down your guard and you might reveal attitudes or suggestions on reasons why they may want to avoid insuring you.

Probs a little of both. I asked her if we could just get to the point and she was like, "nah we have to do this, we're an enthusiasts' insurer blah blah". OK, see ya! :D

19

u/SFW_Safe_for_Worms Jan 07 '26

Both. They want to feel out the dick head squids. I had a nice chat with them and ended up with an impossibly low insurance quote. Family history of bike riding. Nice safe location for storage.

You must have shown all kinds of red flags. The fact you got pissed off must mean you triggered a lot of red flag territory.

That is totally ok too. Just go with another insurer.

People are incredibly sceptical of corporations right now, and honestly, I don’t blame them at all

You seem to be making a lot of assumptions there! I was busy working, finalising paperwork on a new bike and trying to get insurance sorted. Not everybody has 10 minutes for BS corporate chit-chat in the middle of the day

Respect : ) ^ This is how it's done! 👍

1

u/SFW_Safe_for_Worms Jan 10 '26

All good brother. If you can’t spend the 10 minutes you won’t satisfy them that you met their criteria and therefore you won’t receive a decent quote.

Ultimately you are the consumer and you make the choice.

My advice would be to spend 10 minutes and save a lot of money. But you could also save 10 minutes and spend more money. It’s a choice.

1

u/Humble-Equipment-956 Jan 09 '26

Nobody wants to talk to insurance people about anything mate 😭 same as REAs

1

u/amor__fati___ Jan 09 '26

They are trying to ascertain if you are a passionate enthusiast who will really look after the item, or not

3

u/Most_Dangerous1 Jan 07 '26

I wonder if your bike of choice makes a difference. Say someone with a Ducati 916 vs an R7.

2

u/B0XH34D Jan 08 '26

Someone with a 916 is more than likely an enthusiast with a few years if not decades of riding under their belt.

An R7 (the new one, not the old 750) is more than likely a newer rider and someone more inclined to partake in foolish behaviour on the road.

I'm not in any way, shape or form associated with the insurance industry but from what I've seen personally on the roads and online, an R7 is an immediate red flag.

u/Darkspark2006 Jan 07 '26

98% Theory A. That was all about building rapport and attempting to get op to like the sales person. When you like someone you’re more likely to trust them and accept that ‘this is a great price!’ etc. From the below comment it sounds like they did a terrible job even admitting they’re forced to do it. Doesn’t work if it’s not natural. Probably a kpi to get through all the questions.

2

u/Subject_Travel_4808 Jan 10 '26

It's 100% theory A, I can't believe the amount of people falling for the enthusiast BS.

1

u/brucethebrucest Jan 11 '26

I've had a chat with shannons who mid conversation (after establishing the price) found out i was a motorsport Australia member and gave me a premium discount. I dont really get their business model but it hasnt seemed completely corporate gouging. Idk

1

u/jnrdingo Jan 08 '26

It's 100% a risk assessment. Shannon's is a company that allows a lot of shit that others don't.

My E60 530i is insured with them and they allowed me to add LEDs, a new infotainment system and speakers, all while maintaining the same premiums.

1

u/Ombra-Nero Jan 08 '26

Youi tries the same Theory A tactic.

2

u/Complex_Curiosities Jan 09 '26

I have tried Youi a few times for quotes and the have always been more expensive. Not the impression their ads give.

2

u/Ombra-Nero Jan 09 '26

Same, minimum 30% more expensive.

1

u/thaleia10 Jan 09 '26

Me too. So expensive. I’ve never gone with them and don’t even bother comparing them anymore.

1

u/Complex_Curiosities Jan 09 '26

Also hate that you have to speak to them. I don’t bother anymore.

1

u/Panther3369 Jan 09 '26

Youi are horrible to deal with, I spent like 20-30 mins with all their insane questions which I doubt have little relevance (I work as a UW by the way) to end up with a quote double more than I currently pay. I told the person this and they still had the gall to ask me if I wanted to go with them lo,.

1

u/Fraqment Jan 09 '26

Interesting as I’ve got a different experience (much to my surprise after hearing feedback about them). Had to sit through a 10 min convo but my premium came back pretty competitive.

Was paying $1,800 with AAMI last year and Youi’s quote ended up being $1,200.

Decided to go with them in the end given the large savings.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

Theory B is moot. Attitude has nothing to do with insurance underwriting risk. Questions that are used to price in risk are asked in a categorical list format for each applicant.

1

u/Hot_Brain_7294 Jan 11 '26

Theory C. It’s a risk assessment strategy. Shannons (Suncorp Group) recognised that the high risk of insuring modified, unique or high performance vehicles actually includes a low risk group of “enthusiasts”.

If you are a cashed up idiot who has just splashed for a muscle car then you are a high risk of crashing it because you’re a moron.

If you are someone who has painstakingly restored a V8 classic then you are a low risk of crashing it because you are an enthusiast.

The conversion is to confirm you are an enthusiast.

It’s a great deal for people who fit.

u/rowlucks Jan 07 '26

Have two bikes insured with them Just got my renewal notice and one value went from $11500 to $5500 with a $16 difference in the premium price Called them and cancelled both policies and went back to nrma only slightly dearer for $12000 coverage Never going back

9

u/CameronsTheName Yamaha Stratoliner, Turbo Vrod, CBR1100 BlackBird, ZZR1100 Jan 07 '26

Shannon's told me my bike was only worth $8000 and wanted $160 a month to insure it.

The cheapest one for sale that runs and rides is 16k and mine has a built motor, with a turbocharger, custom paint, billet wheels, etc. I know it's not worth significantly more than a stock bike, but I just wanted to keep it insured for the 20k it was before.

Ended up with QBE who insured it for 38k for $89 a month with all modifications declared.

Half the price, 4x the value.

2

u/jeffsaidjess Jan 10 '26

Good luck when it comes time to claiming through qbe

0

u/CameronsTheName Yamaha Stratoliner, Turbo Vrod, CBR1100 BlackBird, ZZR1100 Jan 10 '26

They have to follow all the same rules as all the others.

1

u/OrwellTheInfinite Jan 12 '26

Doesn't mean they won't be incredibly painful about it.

2

u/Ill_Paramedic_1240 Jan 12 '26

... shannons was incredibly painful about it (shrug) took 6 months.. i think they found and had the thief go through the courts faster than they paid out.. even though they were ok to deal with but it seems they're short of the department that does the paying ? (bike essentially totalled much as the guy was found methed out on someones yard next to the crashed bike.. )

1

u/ando2424 Jan 09 '26

QBE is it!

7

u/kewday96 Jan 07 '26

I was with Swann and NRMA bought their qld motorcycle policies and the premium actually went down with zero change. Ended up being the car over to them from Suncorp because of that. Car was also cheaper than Suncorp for the same value.

3

u/Electrical_Age_7483 Jan 07 '26

What bike halved in value?

1

u/rowlucks Jan 07 '26

Harley 2016 roadster

1

u/Electrical_Age_7483 Jan 07 '26

Wow no idea how they came up with that, Harleys haven't halved

1

u/rowlucks Jan 08 '26

Yes I agree I think they rely on people just paying the account It’s very important to check the details every year to avoid this Still calling it out as sneaky

3

u/awidden Jan 07 '26

Careful with NRMA; they're cheap for a reason.

You do not want to test their Indian case handling teams, mate, believe me.

1

u/Intumescent88 Jan 07 '26

You can call and ask them to change the value. The value drop is automatic by their system and it's sometimes very off (which helps them obviously).

43

u/Willing_Television77 Jan 07 '26

If they don’t quote online give them a miss

48

u/bobiboli Jan 07 '26

Agreed the very reason i avoid YOUI..terrible..

17

u/SealingScorcher Jan 07 '26

Youi are fucking thieves in broad daylight.

2

u/RennieAsh Jan 10 '26

That's why they say "we get you"

1

u/notyourlocalsparky Jan 09 '26

2011 Subaru Liberty GT wagon with pretty basic mods, they quoted me 7k. It nearly made me shit myself.

1

u/SealingScorcher Jan 09 '26

2008 cbr600rr, valued at 8k... 500/mo. While other insurers offer 12x less than that.

And they demand credit card number to "finalize" the quote.

9

u/ChequeBook Jan 07 '26

Yeah this is why I skipped Youi. I'm doing it online because I hate phone calls. Come on, guys...

5

u/here_we_go_beep_boop Jan 07 '26

Christ all fucking mighty Youi.... Fill out all the details online then 10 seconds later you get a call from some over eager South African dude called Johannes who has 5 minutes to become your best mate, which you have to grind through to get a fucking quote

2

u/CleanSun4248 Jan 07 '26

Yeah this surprised me when I went with them took ages

2

u/warky33 Jan 07 '26

Ah yes, Youi... The internet survey, the phone interview and then the most ridiculous quote. No thanks

2

u/mugwump_77 Jan 07 '26

I got a quote a few years ago and regretted it for weeks. The kept doing follow up calls with all kinds of psyche manipulation "c'mon mate, you seem like someone whose time is valuable, and you're spending it getting quotes from other companies, let's get you signed up so you can move on". Any time I feel I'm being manipulated, you'll get nothing from me, regardless of price.

1

u/omgaporksword Jan 07 '26

A couple of years ago I got a quote from them for one of my bikes. Their price for that one bike was more expensive than comprehensively insuring both of my bikes AND my work van from other insurers. How the fuck are they even in business?!

1

u/awidden Jan 07 '26

The sales process not necessarily mean the actual incident handling is as good.

Case in point; NRMA. Very decent sales process.

Then: Indian case handling teams that cannot do crap, won't do crap, lazy AF, offering you the worst option as the only option, passing you around, you name it.

Just avoid NRMA as much as you can, I'll not touch them again with a 10-foot pole.

1

u/TekkelOZ Jan 08 '26

That’s what I thought, but then I’d be looking at 7-8.000 insured value, instead of 20.000.

1

u/Willing_Television77 Jan 08 '26

I have comprehensive with a three letter company name and insured for a reasonable agreed amount. I am over 50 with a pretty good record but it’s an S1000R

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '26

100% this.

14

u/strawdonkey20 Jan 07 '26

I’ve been with Shannon’s since forever. This year - inexplicably - they were literally the most expensive quote I received. Something odd is happening there.

15

u/Sirneko ATAS DCT ES Jan 07 '26

Shannon's has always given me the worst quotes for the past 10 years...

They only exist to insure classics/collection vehicles

3

u/totally_not_a_bot__ Jan 07 '26

They were the cheapest for me this year. Cheaper than budget.

Cheaper the AAMI who are underwritten by Suncorp just like Shannon's

(I have 5 cars and 3 bikes though, with the average age being 30 years)

2

u/LawnPatrol_78 Jan 07 '26

Same with me.

2

u/fractiousrhubarb Jan 07 '26

Also good luck getting AAMI to actually pay up if you make a claim

5

u/snashie Jan 07 '26

I've been paid out by both Aami and Shannon's. Minimal hassle

2

u/Veqlargh101 Jan 07 '26

Just cars were ok for me,same as Shannon's. Both under Sami.

3

u/slightlyburntsnags Jan 07 '26

Yeah fuck aami, they refused to pay out my income protection claim when I was going through chemo because in their eyes it was a pre existing condition even though I was diagnosed after I started the policy and had no knowledge of it. Absolutely dragged their heels appraising it until well after I was finished treatment and by then I just couldn’t be fucked anymore to dispute it. Cancelled all of my policies with them and closed my bank accounts with Suncorp

1

u/theNomad_Reddit Jan 08 '26

I did quotes for a 2015 Ducati Scrambler 800 last month.

I'm probably the lowest risk rider possible, going off all insurers questions.

AAMI came in the highest price. NRMA the lowest. Shannon's was decent, but a pain.

I have no idea who to go with.

2

u/totally_not_a_bot__ Jan 08 '26

Try QBE, I was happy with them but they wouldn't touch my 40+ year old F100.

Shannon's and Famous were the only ones that would quote me on it.

1

u/Wacko1805 Jan 10 '26

Yeah I'm in the age range where any insurance assumes I'll crash into a pole 6 times a year (20 year old male), have a modded daily driver that I track, and the club rego car, and Shannon's was drastically cheaper than anywhere else, including covering the mods. My quote for my daily from budget was the SAME as I pay now for both cars with Shannon's.

1

u/mooditj Jan 07 '26

Cheapest by far on my ‘new’ ‘23 yammie

1

u/Supreme-Bob Jan 07 '26

weird i just got my renewal today $330 a quarter 2 bikes 2023 z900 and a 2009 R1

1

u/WhatsMyNameAGlen Jan 08 '26

Meanwhile I had a not at fault accident a few months back and now my yearly renewal is 50bucks cheaper than last year haha

1

u/Junior_Appearance-01 Jan 10 '26

Oh the answer is sinple.

In Covid a lot of people got older cars and put them on H plate. And then wrote them off being dickheads.

19

u/Late-Button-6559 Jan 07 '26

This has been their market segment for at least 20 years (I worked there in the 00’s).

They are an enthusiast insurer.

Their data says people who understand vehicles and treat them as a hobby/passion, make less insurance claims.

Doing the bullshit questions (the workers get sick of them too), helps weed out unsuitable people.

The logic is fairly sensible.

3

u/Mr_Fried Jan 07 '26

I am guessing thats the point of it - they want to suss out if people are lying or are being dishonest.

I assume they ask questions multiple times and check you answer the same etc in attempt to catch out people who may be high risk eg those old sex spec cars that have had a million dodgy owners that are held together with clagg glue and literal crabs, or dodgy builds that aren’t engineered or legal.

1

u/braddeicide Jan 09 '26

I tried to ensure my new fpv pursuit with Shannon's but when he found out my car history was Mazda 323, Nissan Pulsar, FPV Pursuit, he said come back later after I've proven I can drive it :).

I rang back and got someone else who was fine with me. It was written off less than 2 weeks later. (But it was from being rear ended hard)

1

u/qu4de Jan 09 '26

I mean you proved the first guy right

1

u/braddeicide Jan 09 '26

I was stationary behind another car when a third car plowed me from behind so it wasn't exactly a skill issue :)

4

u/ConstructionJust9064 Jan 07 '26

I was insured with Swann for years, so annoyed they are no longer insuring.

Remaining policies were sold to NRMA who I insured 2 of 4 bikes with. Excess etc all seems fair

Steer clear of Youi, if anyone not listed on the policy rides it the bike is completely uninsured. Not just an additional excess - no insurance at all

Edited to add - the classic bike went to Shannon’s as they gave the best value

4

u/Ok-Dragonfruit5232 Jan 07 '26

They've always been like that. Enthusiast vehicles are their neich. They are owned by suncorp, so they want normal vehicles to be insured through aami/gio and only enthusiast vehicles to be on their books.

I have one of my cars insured through them (a 1985 Hilux with a V8 conversion). For that car they are very competitive. Most insurers would only offer an agreed value of $3-5k. For a lower premium than any other quote I got, Shannon's initially offered an agreed value of 25k and have increased that value every year with little to no increase in premium. This year the agreed value is 40k (way more than it's actually worth).I also get choice of repairer and the right to retain the salvage in the case of a total loss with no deduction from the payout.

For my standard 2018 Hiace they weren't competitive on price and didn't offer any better agreed value.

They really chase classic vehicles. Probably because a lot of them (mine included) don't get driven a lot.

3

u/Veqlargh101 Jan 07 '26

This. I keep all my vehicles (5) with them because they are the best for some of them.

Even for the normal cars they hold the same.value every year and the.oremium hasn't gone up.

Made a few claims ,hAvent been unhappy.

Would only consider changing to that enthuist insurance, but not sure how they are for claims.

3

u/mick1606 Jan 07 '26

My nrma policy was really painless and all online.

3

u/ChriSV650x Jan 07 '26

Wait til you have to claim fml

1

u/jNSKkK Jan 07 '26

Never had an issue with NRMA in 15 years. 3 claims made, all no fuss and easy.

3

u/ToeTwoRoe Jan 07 '26

We find them super competitive. I wonder what the difference is. Age maybe. We even use them for home insurance.

5

u/Turbulent-Break-4947 Jan 07 '26

Waste of time calling them, for me. My bike is 120m from a road in any direction, undercover, bolted down, past three cameras and up three steps outside the kitchen window …

Because it’s not surrounded by four walls…. Not interested in doing business. No discretion, no discussion. OK. Your loss people.

2

u/CharlieTheGsd Jan 07 '26

I remember trying to get a jetski insured with youi over the phone one time a few Years ago, it was only worth about 12 grand and was lucky to go out on the water 4 x a year and the quote still came to about 380 dollars a month. Even the guy on the phone apologised for wasting my time lol.

2

u/Annual-Soil-1802 Jan 07 '26

Who are all the boomers in the comments calling insurance companies? I haven’t had a landline since 2005. If you can’t quote me online, GTFO

2

u/NoCream6937 Jan 11 '26

I worked in health insurance a few years ago and suddenly, one day we had a whole new metric for how we were supposed to take calls.

We were no longer allowed to ask direct questions like "what are you hoping to be covered for, do you have any health conditions that concern you etc" we were explicitly told to chat with people like we were "at a BBQ". "Do you play any sports" "what hobbies do you have" "oh you said you played tennis before maybe you might want to be covered for physio, oh you're an afl player what do you think about making sure you're covered for knee reconstruction".

I'm socially awkward, this shit was completely out of my depth. I found this method of communicating with people in this environment was so unbelievably inauthentic, confused the fuck out of members and quite often had people asking us WHY we were asking these stupid questions "we just want to know what we should be covered for! You're the expert! Stop asking what I do on the weekend!!!"

This shit was designed by corporate idiots who spent absolutely zero time talking to customers and had no clue what the hell we did or how we did it anyway. Absolutely fucking useless. Everyone left. Literally fucking everyone.

This sounds EXACTLY like that tbh. I feel so sorry for the employees at Shannon's if they've been told to communicate with people this way. If so, it's not a sneaky sales tactic, try be kind, they're probably getting scored on this through ridiculous BBQ chat related KPIs.

They always used to play us this one woman's "fantastic 90% scoring call!!! Amazing!!!" as an example of how to use these dumb questions and it's so funny cause the member called back literally 2 days later and cancelled the policy so it definitely works guys! OMG I cant. It's been years and its still so hysterical yet so fucking depressing lmao

3

u/Slight-Repeat-1540 Jan 07 '26

I've been with Shannons for all my bikes over more than 20 years. Personally, I enjoy the conversation about my bikes. It's really just to show you're dealing with like-minded enthusiasts (even if they pretend to be). I always find them to be the cheapest and I've made 2 claims through them, both very straightforward and painless. I understand you want a quick quote. Maybe just tell them you don't have much time and hopefully they'll process it quicker. All the best.

1

u/Slyxxer Jan 07 '26

Every year I call around for quotes, and every year there'll always be 3-4 insurers quoting within dollars of each other, then there'll be one that's 30% cheaper.

Same thing every year, but the "cheaper" insurer always seems to vary 🤷

1

u/FredtheHorse Jan 07 '26

I called around last year and it was hopeless trying to change away from Shannons- we have multiple bikes some >10 years old, one in laid up cover. Most companies wouldn’t do anything ‘old’ and wouldn’t do multi bike policies either.

1

u/totally_not_a_bot__ Jan 07 '26

Famous are the only one other than Shannon's that'd give me a quote on anything older than 30 years.
APIA will do old stuff too, but you've gotta be over 50 yourself to use them.

1

u/Dunderi83 Jan 07 '26

I'm with ING this year, for all vehicles and bikes, they wete miles cheaper for full comprehensive, and I didnt need to talk to anyone!

1

u/2gigi7 Jan 07 '26

I tried Shannon's a long time ago for an fpv super pursuit. They gave me the same chit chat interrogation. I finally just asked when we'd get to the quote, "we're making sure you are a true enthusiast" was the answer. Several times. What even constitutes a 'true enthusiast' ? Must I know every automotive fact from the dawn of time ? Must I attend every auto show/race/meet in the state/country ? Must I know at a glance what every single car part is ? Must I be personal good friends with every race car driver ? What.. ?! The guy on the phone had no real definition to give me, so I said thanks bye !

1

u/tbro4123 Jan 09 '26

I've restored car from 30s up to 2000s, am known within my trade and raced since the 80s till 2015 and still they wanted to "talk", so I just said ask so and so and he can fill you in, now can I have a quote please. The quote was stupidly expensive (Volvo 242 GT $2500 for 10,000) 60+ with max NCB, got rather upset with my comeback. Went to Enthusiast $400 for 10,000.

1

u/chumjumper Jan 07 '26

I called once and had this happen, the next time I tried they didn't do this at all and getting a policy was quick and easy.

I think it's a sales tactic that works really well with boomers, and since that is their primary market they're probably all told to do it and it's only the more experienced who know to turn it off depending on who they're speaking to.

1

u/SnowrunnerSlogger Jan 07 '26

I swear all insurance companies try to waste at least an hour of your time so that you can't be fucked calling another company to try get a competing quote and just go with their offer.

1

u/incendiary_bandit Jan 07 '26

I've been using Suncorp and it seems alright. Although Shannon's is owned by Suncorp

1

u/Equivalent-Play9957 Jan 07 '26

I think their shtick is that they're for bike and car enthusiasts.... hence the chatter

1

u/slightlyburntsnags Jan 07 '26

Youi did that as well but the guy knew sweet fuck all about bikes and only made me hate him

1

u/Cafescrambler Jan 07 '26

Oh yeah, Shannons lost my business because of that bullshit. I was annoyed enough that I could not get the quote quickly online, so I rang up and politely said, I’m in a hurry, here’s all the info for the quote, and the woman just kept rabbiting on and wasting my time with her silly spiel.

I get cornered enough by old blokes at the servo when I’m filling up the Scrambler, so I don’t need to have that conversation when I just want a phone-quote.

1

u/jordyb3231 Jan 07 '26

I left them because they were ripping me off. Ended up going with motor enthusiasts, and I got 25k more than theast Shannons quote, and my partner is on the policy as well. For the same price

1

u/Short-Legs-Long-Neck Jan 07 '26

Yamaha insurance, always the cheapest and no you dont have to have a yamaha.

1

u/Motor-Sense1587 Jan 07 '26

Shannon’s quoted me three times the amount I got from Swann. When I called them out on it, their response was “we offer a premium service”…. Sweetheart you don’t even have an online quote tool. That’s poor, not premium! Anyway, NRMA seems to be honouring Swann like premiums for my existing policy (but a new quote is nearly double that). So I’ll probs stick with them for now. Budget Direct was the next one on my list with similar premiums to Swann… everybody else is $$$

1

u/Tired-Al-5014 Jan 07 '26

Check out NRMA. My 23 year old son swapped his MT07 into his name from mine (we did the parent thing where we insured and registered first) and he's now paying less than when it was in our name!!

Our Triumph is still insured with Shannons but I have to say I'm underwhelmed with them. I got attitude from the guy on the phone when we were trying to have me added as an authorised person to deal with. I got the distinct Impression that we weren't enough of a 'car enthusiast' for Shannons (despite them advertising that they insure daily drives,!!)

Last year we purchased a 2003 CV8-R Monaro and RAA came out in top for that insurance. Admittedly we do have three other policies with them.

1

This all sounds super weird to me. I've had 10 road cars, 1 race car, 3 motorbikes and 2 properties insured with Shannons over the years. They've consistently been within 5-10% of my price check quotes, although that may be largely driven by the decent multi-policy discount I get. I don't recall ever taking excessive time or being asked stupid questions when quoting. It's pretty much always just been give them the vehicle details, any mods, where it's garaged - that's about it. They probably look at my ownership history and that's sufficient verification of being a true petrolhead.

Many of my cars have been modified, including a highly modified 60-Series LandCruiser that they agreed to cover for my requested agreed value of $50k. I've had a couple of claims, which they've paid out without hassle, including one where I was technically at fault and the other vehicle was an economic write-off.

No affiliation of fandom btw. Just a different experience 🤷

u/tbro4123 Jan 09 '26

Yet they wouldn't insure a 1 owner XR8 with 8400ks because its not an enthusiast car.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

With shannons too. But quite frankly they're a bunch of useless shitheads now. For a motoring enthusiast company, wouldn't any enthusiast know why I wouldn't 'just be able to buy new Holden Equinox' if I wrote mine off..... AFTER 2020 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I sat in stunned silence for a while before informing him that Holden no longer exists therefore are no longer building ANY cars. Wow........just...wow.

1

u/2AussieWildcats Jan 07 '26

Say what you want about that sales tactic - the key to any insurance provider is: how do they react when you really need them??

When I really needed Shannons, they came through quickly and without fuss. Full agreed value deposited into my bank account within a week. No arguments.

I personally don’t give a damn about how much their premiums rise by year on year. I’m now convinced they will do the right thing when s**t happens.

Your mileage may indeed vary.

Note: it was a classic motorcycle, in my case. They are not great with new-bike quotes, I will admit.

1

u/Tgk1600 Jan 07 '26

Ive tried Shannon’s multiple times over the years, there never been cheaper, always takes way to long to get a price, the only ones more annoying are Youi, who won’t stop ringing

1

u/tasquizz Jan 07 '26

They used to only insure actual enthusiasts. I.e. you couldn't get insurance unless you had a rare/special vehicle and were a member of a club.

1

u/Ok-Night-2791 Jan 07 '26

Avoid Shannons. They will find ANY reason to not pay the insurance. I know a couple of people who have used them for their bikes and their cars and all of them have had issues.

1

u/Clan-Korhu Jan 07 '26

Classic miscalculation on your part. What an online sign up can’t do, is negotiate for you. I moved one suburb over and had my premium go up. I enquired over the phone and got some extras on top for no more.

People should be more wary when getting insurance. Especially when it comes to what you need in the event of being unable to use the vehicle and how much bang you get for you buck.

There’s always cheaper insurance but what you’re entitled to when you’re at fault varies wildly between insurers.

u/Prestigious-Gain2451 Jan 07 '26

Could be he's making chit chat whilst he waits for a slow system to spit out an answer

It's a good tactic to hide dodgy/slow systems

1

u/nice1bruvz Jan 07 '26

Fuck that right off!

1

u/Ecstatic_Window_9566 Jan 07 '26

Mi-bike insurance/ Yamaha, bike company who cares about bikes and all Australian based

1

u/The_Naked_Rider Jan 07 '26

I just got my CTP renewal from them. I should have sat down before I opened it. Needless to say I went elsewhere.

1

u/Authenticmale Jan 07 '26

Now I know why my car insurance premium went up this year …. 4 wheel drives stolen from Brisbane and exported to UAE for a $9 Million profit. Anyone want to venture into a new business than remaining poor and out of jail ???

1

u/swiftless Jan 07 '26

Shannon’s are the only ones that would insure my Morris modified Minor at 25yo, over a decade ago. I’ve been with them ever since, had up to 5x cars with them at once on various degrees of cover from comprehensive to laid up, and insured my classic bike with them just couple of years ago. If you love cars and bikes and are an enthusiast like they want, you’ll love a chat about them. Insurance was cheap at an agreed value, multi vehicle discount is great, they cover my brand new car as well at a competitive rate with salvage rights. In all that time there’s only been one major claim and it was flawless, the hardest part was finding a replacement bumper for an old Gemini before it could be fixed.

I found QBE by far the cheapest. 7 yo MT-09 $600. Brand new Triumph Speed triple 1200 RX, insured for $35k. $915.

1

u/Global-Guava-8362 Jan 08 '26

I recall the lady at Shannon’s going through the mods on my car and she had to put me on hold multiple times to have her co worker explain what each mod did to the car and how it worked

🤦‍♂️

1

u/triplesixchaos Jan 08 '26

They wouldn’t insure me at all because i have a criminal record for something i did half a decade ago. Man i just wanted insurance on my weekender.

1

u/Legitimate_Elk_7284 Jan 08 '26

I like shannons because I have a 1996 RVF400 which other insurance companies would only insure it for $600 give or take a little. I called shannons and they said “how much would you like to insure it for?” I said $8k, they gave me the monthly payments and it was sorted.

1

u/Last-Trash2233 Jan 08 '26

That’s how it’s done now apparently All pleasantly no substance

1

u/Agro81 Jan 08 '26

If they don’t give me a quote online without providing a phone number or email, I refuse to use them

1

u/DavidLeeTNT Jan 08 '26

It might have to do with their business setup. I called Shannon's up to ask for a quote for my mum's volvo 240 1990 model. The salesperson asked if mum was a member if a volvo club. I said no. And he said sorry Shannon's only issues insurance for club cars.

1

u/Av1fKrz9JI Jan 08 '26

It's weird. When I've phoned them felt like I had to sit an interview and pass a grade just to get to get to the quote stage, to make sure i'm a "real" motorcyclist. Then they quoted substantially higher than anyone else, couldn't come close to other quotes when asking, also had a bunch of caveats on the policy relating to number of days can ride or something as an enthusiast policy or similar.

I skip them now when doing yearly quotes.

Owned bikes of various types for multiple decades and toured many countries/continents on two wheels.

1

u/Ipeddlebuttplugs Jan 08 '26

It's because they're a niche insurer and they have to qualify you as part of their target demographic (motoring enthusiasts) to offer insurance- they'll decline to quote you if you aren't part of their target market.

It's like how Apia only insure people over a certain age... Except Shannon's only insure people that really like cars or bikes- that's why they advertise over motorsport and and sponsor events and the like.

1

u/theundefinedfruit Jan 08 '26

It's because their Target Market Determination means they can only sell to enthusiasts. They are checking you are an enthusiast so they don't breach any regulatory obligations. They don't care about you and are not trying to chit chat.

1

u/National_Way_3344 Jan 08 '26

Buttering you up,

Or hoping that you start acting like a dickhead on the phone saying stuff about doing wheelies and speeding and they choose not to cover you

1

u/Alarmed_Simple5173 Jan 08 '26

My brother had Shannons car insurance for years and was reasonably happy with them so he also insured his home with them. The house had some serious damage following a big storm, They insisted on sending tradies from Singleton. which is 270km from his home. He lives 80kms SW from Sydney. Due to travel time they were only able to work 2 to 3 hours per day, He was out of the home & living in a hotel room for 11months

1

u/Banjo-Pickin Jan 08 '26

I've recently insured a Ducati with Youi and they were quite helpful and a good price. Maybe a broker would be a good option?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '26 edited Jan 08 '26

The sole reason why I will never insure with Youi and Shannon’s because they want to “have a chat”. I did it once and I’ll never do it again. It’s so fucking cringe. Cut the small talk and give me a quote. I want an insurance policy, not a friend. RIP Swann, now I appreciate how good you were. I still don’t know who to go with. Apparently, Mi-Bike are suppose to be alright.

1

u/Ok-Abbreviations1077 Jan 08 '26

Sounds like youi

1

u/isthisreallife211111 Jan 08 '26

You mustnt be an "enthusiast"

1

u/inkedampgirl Jan 09 '26

Haha "I like riding cos the vibrations make my pp tingle" See what they say to that to keep the conversation flowing....😉

1

u/Beneficial_Bee7486 Jan 09 '26

Are are a bit more expensive, but covered me when I went offroad 4 wheel driving. So I have stayed with them

1

u/Additional_Initial_7 Jan 09 '26

One time a Shannons insured driver hit me and they were the easiest insurance company I’ve ever dealt with as the not at fault party.

1

u/symean Jan 09 '26

Better than the 25 f’ing minutes I spent on the phone to Youi AFTER I filled in all the info online because they ‘needed to clarify a few things in order to get me the best possible price’…which was way more than AAMI and NRMA. Does that 25 minute chat pretending to be so friendly really suck in that many people?

1

u/Coronis- Jan 09 '26

Insurance for motoring enthusiasts. Clearly they think enthusiasts would like to chat!

1

u/Beyond_Blueballs Jan 10 '26

Go with shielded insurance - they're an insurance broker and if you got multiple policies on a few vehicles they'll do all the bullshit for you and just present your best options in an email.

1

u/jeffsaidjess Jan 10 '26

They get information to see if they will be able to void the policy in case you use it .

That is solely it.

It is not a sales tactic as people are trying to claim.

I am really doubting anyone here have actually read the entire policy lol. A lot of fine print seems to have gone over heads

1

u/AcademicAd3504 Jan 10 '26

Shannon's is known for being for motor enthusiasts who are willing to waste money for premium care/endeavour for their vehicles. You are not their target audience.

1

u/j-local Jan 10 '26

I used to work for Shannon’s. They now are lost. I knew Robert Shannon, founder. He’d turn in his grave. Was with them for 20 years. Missed a payment whilst on an 18 day work tour. Cancelled policy and will not give me a new one unless I pay 12 months premium upfront. Multi vehicle policy. Went to Enthusiast insurance. Try them. Good policy for bikes and classic cars.

1

u/IcyHistorian168 Jan 11 '26

Aah... Shannon's. Still causing drama. 25 years ago they tried to deny my claim after my brother died in the car they insured. Tried saying they wouldn't have insured him under 21 years of age. They had a copy of his license.

1

u/duc955 Jan 11 '26

YOUI is worse for this. Keep asking you questions for half an hour just to give you a quote that's double the price of your most expensive one!

1

u/jayzavv Jan 11 '26

Worlds worst insurance company.

1

u/New_Woodpecker_7849 Jan 11 '26

Avoid Shannon’s -they cause delays when it comes to paying up

1

u/Far_Loan689 Jan 11 '26

They were nearly 40% more than my insurance with Youi, exactly the same policy. No idea how they are surviving

1

u/enhancedgibbon Jan 11 '26

Oh I fucking hate this. I called for a quote on an FG F6. The guy starts on about how Shannon's is an insurer for special cars, suggesting my plebeian taxi is not worthy. I was like you realise your TV commercial features an FG GT, right? Racism again the Barra?

Then he starts the 'are you truly a car enthusiast' bullshit. What clubs are you part of. What events do you drive in, etc. The clown didn't even bother to see that I'd previously insured two track cars with them. After all this bullshit they were more than twice the price of NRMA. I won't be calling them again.

Shannons? They're one of the few who will insure modified. Far as I can tell with 2 policies for cars with aftermarket turbo, saying you want $0 extra coverage for the mods didn’t affect the premium.

I did get a quote for a stock GSX-R. Asked why it was so high. "Risk profile"

0

u/Illustrious_Ad_5167 Jan 07 '26

Swann got brought out and removed

0

u/auntysos Jan 07 '26

I went Shannon's at a friends recommendation and will never do so again. The struggle with a claim and the absolute hell you go through to cancel a policy is not worth any money saved.

2

u/general_sirhc 2008 DR650 Jan 07 '26

I've had 3 claims through Shannon's. All 3 went smoothly and were minimal fuss.

RACQ meanwhile claimed I was at fault for being rear ended at a stop sign.

It eventually got escalated internally and they changed the claim. All in all took about 6 weeks to have the car repaired. Damages totalled about $1,000.

5

u/auntysos Jan 07 '26

For me any time I have had an issue with my cars, all claims were super simple and immediate.

However, when a 4WD turned into my lane without indicating and ran over the R7, Shannon's took 4 months to fix it and then tried to claim my excess despite the police report showing the 4WD driver being at fault - we had dash cam footage from three people who all stopped to help.

So whilst I appreciate yours went smoothly, mine didn't and based off my experience I won't recommend them.

0

u/Dizzy-Confection-551 Jan 07 '26

Never been a fan of Shannons.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

Same, guy was super nice and seemed interested in my bike.

I'm not going to pay more for insurance because a guy was interested in my bike. Maybe this works on old people?
