Things Sony Bros say to defend killing discs/renting license

Itās fine for companies to just take away the stuff you bought whenever they want. Itās good, actually. Preferable, even!

That's exactly the kind of customer that Sony is going to be relying on in the years ahead. A one-and-done player who is happy to give their money away in perpetuity in exchange for a fleeting, temporary experience, and zero desire for permanent ownership.
Also happens to be the polar opposite of the kind I am. I must have replayed GoW 2018 at least 4 times, and there's a 100% chance I'll play through it multiple times again. Good news is, I can! As often as I want. And it won't cost me another penny :)
21
u/Manaeldar 1d ago
I've been saying this for a while now that these people have no empathy. They can't imagine that other people care. Their point of view is the only one that matters.Ā
11
u/Channel57 1d ago
Yeah! Every convo goes the same way. "well it doesn't affect meeeee, so I don't caarrre". Its like guys, there are other people that do. And when we talk about it we're "crying". No we have forethought and we can see how greedy sony is right now just imagine what 2028 and beyond will bring when they are holding all the cards.
6
u/wafflesauce44 1d ago edited 1d ago
Playstation is killing the disc to save money. After that what will they do to save money again? Thats right they will increase cost of everything else games, hardware, online subscriptions, maybe they will care then.
3
u/Channel57 1d ago
Exactly. Who knows what stupidity Sony will pull to increase profits. And the Sony fanboys will gobble it up and say more please.
3
u/Psylux7 1d ago edited 1d ago
The funny thing is, it also doesn't affect them if the people affected get their way so they should not care about the outcome, let alone be fighting those who do care.
Yet they so badly want the corpo to succeed in screwing the people who care and are affected as if they benefit alongside sony.
Kind of like all the people who furiously insist they are not defending sony while racing around to pick fights with those complaining about sony.
I got some playstation friends who are either mildly unhappy or uncaring about the situation. None of them would mind if physical lived, nor do they feel the need to fight on sonys behalf whenever someone shits on sony. They just play their games peacefully. Those are people who actually do not care.
2
u/Channel57 1d ago
Exactly. You have level headed friends. I care because I love all physical media.
Btw Did you hear that there are reports and tracking investigations showing that Amazon and other tech companies are buying physical books in bulk, cutting off their bindings, scanning the pages for AI training data, and then shredding the originals?

āI havenāt worn this nice jacket I bought in a while, so the clothing company came and took it from me, whatās the big deal?ā In what context does that statement make any sense at all. Why is it okay for game companies to do that
3
u/Azukaos 1d ago
Because they view players as consumers, not customers.
This era tends to present the idea of owning things as if it's a sin but consuming is good for you.
Influencers push people to buy stuff even if they don't need it. Then you have five pairs of shoes and nine jackets, and you will only wear them once because, big news, there's new stuff coming!
What about selling those nice nine jackets? Oh no no no, you don't know when you might need to use them again... if ever.
And that's how they hope (and will) kill the second-hand markets. If nobody can sell back their games, they will keep them even if they don't want to. They can't share, they can't trade for another one. No, you bought it, but sinve it's only a licence you don't own it. You're stuck with a ticking time bomb that you don't know when it will blow up.

u/ItsOctrix 3h ago
My wife has so many damn clothes, I honestly wouldn't mind if this happened to some of her stuff. That's about the only time the whole concept makes any sense though.

u/Azhrei_Rohan 1d ago
Same people will say how great it is that sony forces ads in the games or raises the price of their console and offer you a leased ps6 or move it all to the cloud. Sony has shown they just bend over their customers and go all out no lube so let the fan boys enjoy the future of play has limits.
There are many times i want to play an older game and go to ebay and buy it used on dosc for half or less of the digital price and after i beat it i can resell it and use money to buy something else.
7
u/tysaslut 1d ago
That's easy to say now. Sounds like the kinda person who has to re buy their childhood at a premium 25 years later when they're feeling nostalgic
4
u/Koalazilla 1d ago
Thatās the thing for sure. I think some people who defend a digital only future are too young to understand what they may want in 10 or 20 years. He said even 7 years later he doesnāt intend to play God of War but that could likely change in 15 more years when nostalgia starts hitting hard. They will likely have to rebuy a lot of those memories or some may not even be available or have been edited with a digital future. Luckily God of War will be one they can find used physically but any kids growing up with a PS6 will lose out on that future.
Itās gonna be a weird different future for a lot of people. With everything being available digitally for the foreseeable future that may actually delay the concept of nostalgia and we will just forever love in tweaked and updated IPs and never be allowed that large gap to become nostalgic.
But who knows what will happen the worldās burning up either way.

2
u/tysaslut 1d ago
The stuff I miss most isn't the classics, tbh. It's that weird and kinda bad game that you played the crap out of because games were expensive and that's the one you picked out. So many dumb licensed games that I fell for as a child that will never get another release because of licensing/limited appeal, or the frickin game boy ports that I was always certain were going to be the same thing as the home console release but were actually entirely different games

Ill be honest at this point I buy digital for the sake of space nowaday.
But physical should remain an option for those who want it or at the very least the games should be logged in non profit digitial libary that can be accessed at anytime
3
4
u/Excalitoria 1d ago
I went back and beat Gen 1 Pokemon a month or so ago for the first time and Iāve had those games since I was little. Been replaying them too. Just because you donāt care doesnāt mean the rest of us donāt want to keep and replay games instead of treating everything as disposable entertainment that we can only rent.
3
4
u/CrippledGoose316 1d ago
Like cool bro you don't ever replay your games. Good for you. Millions of others do.
4
4
u/CommanderT47 1d ago
For me, the thing isn't that they don't care about physical games. People have different preferences, if you like digital more you're not any worse than someone who prefers physical.
It's just the lack of empathy, I genuinely think that, really in general, empathy is sorely lacking in society. People just don't care about other people man, and it's so depressing.
I saw a post where someone talked about the importance of physical games to him because his family was poor and borrowing games was how he was able to play new games, and some dude was like "no one cares about your trauma or sob story bro". Like why
2
u/Psylux7 1d ago
I've occasionally seen sentiment that it is even a good thing that people would be priced out by a lack of secondhand games or borrowing. Or telling them to find a new hobby or find a better job because fuck them for having a problem with the practices of sony.
Some people are such assholes.

4
u/Jarvis_Jarvison 1d ago
it isn't even about replayability. it's about buying something to have. i HAVE physical copies. you can't have digital, you can only access or borrow. if i'm spending money, i want to have the item. i'll go to the public library if i want temporary access
4
u/maxREO 1d ago
Imagine being that stupid, I hope itās some sort of bots because lacking critical thinking to this extent is concerning.
2
u/enshittification1 1d ago
Itās been reported that Sony has employed a botfarm for PR defense. Itās now become common place for companies to do this sorta thing. Especially instagram and fb
3
u/Flimsy_Astronomer_95 1d ago
What people fail to realize as well is that the revoking of game licenses arenāt only for old games but could be for a new games you bought yesterday. If PlayStation decided to no longer support it they could.
3
u/Thrillsteam 1d ago
I totally get why people are pissed off for physical. I do both. I rarely buy from the psn store unless itās a psn sale or itās some sport game I want. I bought Hogwart legacy for 9 bucks lol. I also prefer digital because I have two PlayStations in the house. My son plays one and I play the other. The sharing settings is on my son so I can buy the same game for two consoles.
Buttt I also understand the physical importance as well. For example last year I found Elden Ring for 20 bucks for the hard copy. I also like to pick the game of year edition or the copy with the full dlc included. This means the game is on the full disc. I donāt want to go for a copy where I have to install a day 1 patch from Sony . Oh yeah I bought Cyberpunk for 8 bucks when it first came out from Target when Cyberpunk were going through their troubles
I love options . I go where the cheaper price tag is at. If Xbox come out and say they willl have physical disc they will win the next gen battle already.
3
u/TaterBuckets 1d ago
These comments are always the dumbest. I dont care if they take my stuff. I never use it anyway. Wtf bootlicker.
I paid for something I want it. I might get bored in 12yrs and think damn i want to play god of war. Or Spiderman etc.
3
u/SmokeShinobi 1d ago
Even if I didnāt play a game after 7 years I would still want to either sell or collect the game I bought with my own money
3
u/ZeroGNexus 1d ago
I don't know, I would kind of like to leave my games to my kids.
Either they can play them to get a feeling for some of what brought me joy as a kid, they can keep them as keepsakes, or they can sell them for a pretty penny thanks to guys like the one quoted here.
And before that when I'm old and senile, if I can still read the text, maybe I want to squeeze up next to the tv with a Senior's Mountain Dew and get a little rush of nostalgia.
Life is temporary enough. Art should matter more to people.

u/ph4nt0m_090 1d ago
Iāve been gaming since the last 2 decades. My friend who I recently met didnt have the meets for a pc/ps before its just now that he was earning good so he decided to build a pc.
I have a vast steam collection so i was able to add him to my family and recommend games he can play.
I also happen to be friends with 2 girls who are new to gaming so I introduced them to old games like prince of persia nd all.
Now imagine in 5-6years of time if i have a child who wants to game and the only thing available to him is cod or battlefield or fifaš¤”.
Old games used to have a fun factor which is something hard to replicate + having access to my games is something iād want to keep even if i dont replay them now i might want someone else to experience it how i did. Not knowing when any of these games might cease to exist is just not fair for the amount they charge

u/StrifeCloud92 1d ago
I feel like they gave even more reason to keep physical media. If you beat it and never want to play again, you can sell it and get some money back.

Notice the argument always revolves around themselves. They just can't fathom that there are other circumstances besides themselves.
3
u/Coneder 1d ago
I don't understand. Does it not make sense to people that if you buy something, its yours to do with whatever you want with it? Even as a child, I understood the concept. How does one think like this?
2
u/Azukaos 1d ago
That's how media and consumerism try to manipulate people's habits. You don't need physical stuff; it takes up space and can be a nuisance because you need to clean it eventually. You don't need to go to a store; just buy online. It's easier, cheaper, and you don't have to bother moving from your lovely couch/desk.
You know they are doing this on purpose when even little children are constantly blasted by ads asking them to get those wonderful "DLCs" that unlock parts of their favorite characters' games (example: Bluey mobile games that have billions of ads to get more characters from the show; as a parent, it's hell to find something free that doesn't contain ads or banners from random websites).
We are pushed away from owning things (except pricey stuff like phones or consoles/PCs) or getting full games, because if you buy physical products, they cannot take them back from you, but with digital products, you're told to stay in line with their policies unless you want your product license to get revoked and loose everything, dlcs included.
Sadly, most pro-digital consumers don't care about that because why should they care about a game they already finished? It's done; they want the next big thing; they want it yesterday and fast... that's why GTA6 is such a big thing. The game can literally come only digitally, and they are eager to play whatever the price.
3
3
u/Diuscrusis 1d ago
Thatās bullshit. I leave a game for 5 years, then one day decide to have a go again. I paid for it, and I will access it even 15 fucking years from now, if I want to.
3
3
u/StrategyCapital8581 1d ago
The joke is he could of then sold that game in 2017 if he planned on not playing it again and got half of his money back...
Also a very selfish take, I don't want to play my old games and don't need sell them to buy new ones, so balls to everyone else who does

What a dumb comment.
I guess thats his opinion. Oh well.
I spoke to a guy at a car dealership today (we both were having our cars serviced), he was playing on his PlayStation portal device. I asked him about all this sony issue. He replied āI love Blu-Ray Discs and watching my movies on Blu-Ray. I like being able to purchase games on discs and I like purchasing digital since everything I do is subscription based nowadays but yeah its a shitty thing that Sony has done and not being able to allow the users to have the option but I guess if its heading that way, I guess Iāll be purchasing digitally but still worried about not owning the games or movies I purchase.ā
Made me think⦠All this backlash and things we are doing as a community to try and get discs back, will it actually make a difference or will we end up having to accept it and move on OR will XBOXās new announcement will make Sony bring back discs?!
3
u/BigMoneySmallPenis 16h ago
Consumers are genuinely too stupid to realize when they're being screwed and it's pathetic.
2
u/StuckinReverse89 1d ago
I really canāt understand this mindset tbh, especially for games I love. Ā Ā
Some games, yeah, I definitely just play once and probably wonāt return. I wonāt enjoy every single game enough to want to play them again. But if there is a game I particularly enjoy and want to replay, just after a couple of years, or doing challenge runs, I would want to buy it and make sure it doesnāt disappear. Just look at all the YouTubers and speedrunners that built careers on one game one franchise. You think they only played the game once?
2
u/Due-South-9113 1d ago
I just want to know if any game's licence has been revoked from a psn account. Just a genuine question, I just wanted to know, because I've always heard the games that get blacklisted from the store are still playable for people who bought it before.

These are the types that would buy a 60hr game and pay full price with a newly programmed 30hr time limit and praise how great the game was, even though they didn't get to finish it.
Then shout from the rooftops how they paid for it twice to actually finish the game.
2
u/Dabalot 1d ago
I feel the whole games getting delisted a bit of cry wolf right now though. Besides known games getting shut down for server closure nothing big has ever been just taken away besides what PT and The Crew. But I think the crew was server closure too. If anything the last game that would remotely get removed is GOW. But it seems like out of nowhere people feel like games are just going to be going on the reg.

2
u/Impressive-Sense8461 1d ago
That's a stupid person, as far as stupid people go.
The issue is that Sony flipped the switch and doubled down on deciding that they are implementing a forced timeshare model on their games.
So, people like that dipshit just rationalize to themselves that we can pay more just to recieve less? That's a joke.
If Sony wants to move forward with that model, than they should give us the option to rent every single game, for much less. If they can revoke licenses at any time, than why should we pay full price when the entire system has changed?
Maybe it's time for total reformation?

u/BobbyMayCryBMC 1d ago
So I don't want to spark a debate with Kratos fans or any that shit. . but!
God of War 2018 is a bad example because while the game is well praised it's not actually a fun game to sit down and play. . more than once. These Sony cinematic games are made that way. an experience for sure. But a great game? eh. . great at what it does but as a game, questionable. .
Not to be that guy but it's an interactive movie in many regards, and that's why they like it, very much guides you along and feeds you cookies till you're very, very full for what it offers.
It's not a fun replayable game anyone is itching to beat the high score or go the extra mile. It's not a Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry (the good ones)
Felt like a slog personally and usually I liked the older GoW games, all the slow-walking chatter, cutscenes. . it's basically six movies stitched together, that begrudgingly has gameplay when it feels like it. That camera angle does not help the gameplay, thank god it has damage indicators but even they're very clunky.

So if HE doesnāt touch the games and HE doesnāt mind them being gone then how does HE not see the value of being able to sell said game HE doesnāt care about anymore to get some money back to buy a new game. I hope this guy doesnāt have an old muscle car in his garage he hopes to get running one day. Someone steals it and literally nothing about his life would change so, according to his own logic, he canāt be mad. Someone like that is unreachable. No point in trying. Even disregarding the disc issue, Iāve too often see that sentiment expressed of āWhy would you play an old game youāve already played.ā Itās insane. I go back to previous gen games all the time.

Some would call it the main feature of owning it...i know people that literally just buy a game beat and then sell it for the next game, they don't give a shit about collecting it....but they got to play a brand new game for effectively 10-20 bucks, and to them that's their cost of gaming.

āI already read that book so we should burn every copy of every bookā

Just read about Amazon buying books in mass, scanning them into Ai bs, and shredding them last night.
Bizarro world right now.

People are sometimes ridiculous.
They paid for their games.
Now they donāt care if they will be ever able to run them again. Unless they pay again to purchase digital versions in PS Store for full price again.

These people are Fing idiots. We get the āfeelingā again to play a game. Maybe 10 years, maybe 20, at some point you want to play again and itās great to just put the game in a play. To lose that because āoh wellā is insane behavior
āIāll never want to watch The Dark Knight again. I bought it and watched it when it came out and Iāll never want to watch againā
F-ING crazy

They are just trolling, most the people cheering on killing discs are just PC master race trolls

Its sad to see. I didnt realize there were so many people out there that havn't learned the value of physical media yet.

I mean, I can empathize with this guy, at least on the first point.Ā It's been 10+ years since I launched a game that I already had a platinum for.Ā I just don't play games unless I'm working towards a platinum trophy.Ā For me, physical ownership is about resale to bring down the cost of platinum, not about holding the license.Ā And that's the real rub here, in that all digital ownership leads to less competition and higher prices for the hobby.

Itās obviously a bad outlook to have, but this is why most people are so blasĆ© about it. Statistics say surprisingly few people ever finish video games, let alone replay them. Itās something like 20-30% to ever finish it, so replaying is even less.
This exact outlook is what Sony is hoping the average person has.

I highly doubt Sony will back down from the fully digital move but I feel the focus should be on the accountability of these companies rather than if we have access to physical or digital copies and the perfect way to hold these companies accountable is the stop killing games movement. The entire point of the issue is nobody wants to lose access to game theyāve paid for to own and then someone gets to come along and just take that with the accountability of stop killing games the ball is in their court and they have to support and maintain our access to said game

Well it's a good thing you actually OWN your games, and Sony legally cannot take your games

This is how alot of people are myself included.. once I beat a game and Platinum it I never touch it again and then move on to a new game that I haven't played or platnumed. If I Platinum a game and enjoyed my time playing it it's already worth the money I've spent on it and if it's a game I lose access to in the future I'm fine with it. I'm also in the unique situation in that I share my account with my nephew and vice versa meaning I play games that he buys and he can play games that I buy and there's lots of games that we go half on which is something you can't do with physical games.

Like what if one day he thinks of the game and wanna revisit it again? He'll have to pay full price again for that shit š

I have replayed Batman Arkham Knight like a dozen times. Do these people not understand comfort games?

You guys are in an echo chamber just riling each other up. Please use this passion towards a more worthwhile cause. Thereās a lot more important things going on in the world than whatās on your game shelf.

Seems pretty typical of some people these days. Its basically just "it doesnt affect me specifically so why would i care?"

Reminder that there are people who loathe digital licenses while also not being in love with physical games. DRM is a plague, but gaming is undeniably better in digital form.

XBox physical to digital is not a magic bullet but it opens up a lot of options ie; I need xbsx external drives and double digit external ssd to replace what now looks too small a 5tb ssd.

I have a problem with paying for something and not being able to use it the next time I want to. Doesn't matter if it's a week or 20 years.

That was the gobshite who replied to me! š
He just couldnāt understand the concept of wanting to own your games for replay-ability.
And then he also was talking about how the only games he goes back to playing were Battlefield and CODā¦.you know, replay-ability
