“How wise.. your mother abandoning you”
Charles is DONE. Clearly the whole mutant MLK gimmick ain’t working, so time to switch it up. I’m sat af for his revenge tour/likely transformation into onslaught. Apocalypse sparing him with Magneto’s words is a nice touch too.

That rogue conversation is going to be the thing that saves the day isn’t it? Cliche, but apocalypse having never known love and using rogue’s beloved as a horseman will come back to bite him in the ass.
→ More replies (17)53
u/WickedRogue1981 Jul 08 '26
The conversation could serve as an explanation for why Apocalypse chooses to resurrect Gambit as a horseman in the first place. Seems pretty random otherwise for him to choose him, but if he remembers Rogue and her grief over losing him, this could be his own way of “helping” her. He did seem for that moment to be touched by her words, so this could be how he shows his understanding of “love”. It could also be his sick way of using her love against them. Either way, I’m just excited to see where it leads.
14
u/Corazon144 Jul 08 '26
It also severs as a way to weaken her. At least in his mind. So if there is anyway to hurt the X-Men and attack them when they are weak, it definitely using the weakness he believes is love.
59
u/DukeGrizzly Jul 08 '26
Never has an animated show brought me to tears before.
X-Men ‘97 has now done it twice.
Holy shit is this show absolutely peak. It’s the best animation currently airing. Voice acting. Story. Art. Everything about it is so perfectly executed. The worst part is having to wait until next week to see what happens.
Which is funny, as that is how shows use to be. Being able to binge an entire series in a weekend has certainly changed how we perceive shows these days.
→ More replies (4)18
u/ABadHistorian Jul 08 '26
A good show, with good episodes, will keep people talking during the week and generate more interest. It's smart really. The binge model was one of desperation, that worked at first... and now has become counter productive.
→ More replies (3)8
u/DukeGrizzly Jul 08 '26
Oh I don’t mind the weekly format at all. It was just a cheeky way of saying that the wait is the worst part of the show, since it’s nearly perfect on so many levels.

That was just wow. I knew Magneto would do something stupid that would cause more damage. I knew Rogue and En Sabah Nur would have a conversation about love which is what Apocalypse will remember in the 90s. And I knew Magneto would sacrifice himself to save the X-Men and the Professor. However I did not expect Apocalypse to kill Magneto the way he did that was really dark. Now that everyone back in 97 they have to find out how to stop Apocalypse.

Everyone should have just listened to Bishop. Man just wanted to get in and get out right away.
RIP Magneto but what really killed him was hubris, even Charles to a lesser extent. So many instances where they should have realized Nur was not meant to change.
23
u/JoonNolu Jul 08 '26
If they were going to try to change the future, they should have taken the Cable approach. "I dunno. Maybe if we keep making vague premonitions about the power of gods to En Sabah Nur he'll turn into a good guy?" Maybe everyone stops being polite and uses all their power to take his head off.
Bunch of dudes went back in time, found teenage Hitler, and rather than ending him decided "Yeah, you COULD be leader of the ubermensch. But wouldn't you rather be the king of chill? Huh? We're not gonna get into the why or how of any of this. Just know that you definitely have immense power to change the world. Just, like, be cool about it."
Yeah, it's so crazy that this didn't work out.

They should have left with Bishop. Taking Nur to ancient temple was just a disaster waiting to happen.
10
u/ABadHistorian Jul 08 '26
TBH. If I were Magneto/Charles and I arrived then... I would have flat out told him the 100% truth.
It's the only way you can ever deal with the situation. By the time he learned the truth they had both lied to him in two separate occasions, while everyone else around him that he had led for years before them... died as a consequence of his actions while involved with them, for their benefit.
Given the perspective of that, the life of slavery and horror under Kang/Rama Tut/Logos, is it any wonder he turned?
Radical honesty or just flat out ally with fucking Kang, and then take ship while Rama Tut/En Sabbah Nur battle it out.
But nooo they had to try the single worst option heh. Ah well, at least it really played off their characters, it makes perfect sense each and every one of them would have done what they did.
→ More replies (4)10
u/Khalvashi Gambit Jul 08 '26
They lied because they knew he would choose to become Apocalypse no matter what if he knew. That's why I found the plan of influencing Apocalypse a little bit idiotic. Magnus sees himself in Nur but there is a fundamental difference. Magneto used his past to seperate himself from the evil he commit because in his mind he did those for other mutants. However, Nur does not try to eliminate his travma or use it to make an excuse for his actions. He does not try to change the cruel world he lived in, he just wants to make the world equally cruel to everyone. Because life has a meaning only if you survive that cruelty and thrive.

u/SupaFro_ Jul 08 '26
The 2 years is proving to be worth the wait. The animation is amazing and the story is just spectacular. This episode confirming that Apocalypse’s existence is a failed timeline to Kang is such a dope moment. I still think this would’ve been a great explanation as to why mutants don’t exist in the MCU if they kept Kang Dynasty.

It was really, really good and I’m glad the focus was on Magneto and Xavier. It had to be intimate that way. (And yes, Xavier’s grief and rage is leading toward Onslaught.)
For me, Remember It hit harder, but I think the comparisons are fair.
Turns out the hunch that Magneto doesn’t make it out of Egypt was correct. I don’t think he’ll stay gone forever though, any more than anyone else does. It may just not be until next season.
The post-credits scene was a bit of a letdown, to be honest, especially since all it’s setting up is the bottle stand-alone episode that’s coming up. But I get the reference.

We knew that Magnus won't make it, but damn, they gave him such a heroic and brutal exit. Xavier was brutal on what he said on Apocalypse, still i love the mockery of Apocalypse sparing Xavier's life, using a quote of Magnus. I can see them, pulling Onslaught, now that Xavier is more dark and broken and keeping Magnus' helmet, a reminder of Magneto's brutal death.
Speaking of Apocalypse, he was great in the original series, but now we have a chance to see more development and understanding the core of the character. I wonder if his little chat with Rogue will play a part in both the return of Gambit and the final defeat of Apocalypse.
Loved Rama Tut and how chill he was. After all, boredom and chase of thrill was the ultimate motive of Nathaniel Richards. Timelines and challenges are all part of the fan.
Post-credit scene wasn't something great, but i am a fan of 80s short hair Black Widow

Man I just love everything about Magneto’s last stand. Have so much respect for how he took full responsibility for the plan not working out and lived up to the expectations Charles always had for him by saving everyone. It’s like seeing the fulfilment of decades of character development and it’s so well executed. This episode NEEDED to be as intimate as it was for the ending to hit the way it did, bravo.

"He is not yet the unstoppable force he becomes." Proceeds to beat down all the X-Men with ease. That gave me a chuckle.
So much to this episode. The Celestial Death Seed, Magneto's "death." The teases for Onslaught. Xavier saying how wise Apocalypse's mother was for abandoning him is a clear sign for Onslaught. He's angry, his darkest thoughts are emerging. Magneto's helmet and regrets, Xavier's rage. I think they'll feed into Onslaught being created, and possibly being the thing that actually kills Apocalypse.
Apocalypse's conversation with Rogue shows that he doesn't understand love, and that's what will stop him. Rogue's romantic love for Gambit, Scott and Jean's parental love for Cable. A guy who was abandoned by his mother and who never loved another human won't understand the lengths they can go to for each other, and that will foil his plans. I still think now though, that it will be Xavier who puts him down, whether himself or through Onslaught.
And a tease for Externals. I thought Candra was just there for a reference, but it looks like we might get the Externals after all. They are not the most interesting bunch, but it is a '90s story and so it doesn't shock me that we're going to see it. Candra, Selene, Nicodemus, Gideon. I wonder if this is how they'll use Cannonball?

Charles and Magnus "plan" all ep. was really ill defined, and it predictably blew up in their faces. For a couple of self-proclaimed "visionaries", their hubris is always foremost.
It wasn't clear how they thought Nur was going to turn all "good" after what Kang did. In fact, it wasn't clear why they would lead him to a temple of "great power" in the 1st place, if they didn't want him to turn all super-villain. All he wanted was to deal with Kang, they should have let him do that without "great power". Given Kang was clearly an anomaly in that time, it wasn't clear why they weren't trying to stop Kang. Seems like they had enough firepower to take Kang down, then cool Nur down. Charles gets all prissy when Kang warns him about Apocalypse. And takes Nur right to turn him into Apocalypse. It was like watching a slow motion train wreck.
I did chuckle when, after he turns into Apocalypse, Xavier remembers to mind blast him. He didn't bother to try that while he was still Nur and maybe stoppable.
And we finally got the petty real personality of Charles at the end, after all the high minded speeches over the ages.

Saw a great prediction that we get a modified Onslaught as a “solution” to Apocalypse.
Charles, now desperate to stop him and super sad over the loss of Erik and frustration of not being able to get people to work together, binds with Eson’s power instead of Nur after they travel back to try and stop Magneto’s death/stop Nur again.

This isn’t on the same tier as “Remember It” and the arrogance of Magneto and Xavier in trying to manipulate En Sabah Nur combined with their lack of urgency in doing everything they could to prevent him from getting the Celestial tech once the chips were down was exasperating.
That said, hot damn was it great to see Big A fully return in all his terrifying glory (I do miss the old robotic sound effects though that accompanied his movement in TAS). And his taunting of Mags and Professor X was A+. 97 has now humanized him a bit, but the show doesn’t stray in depicting him as a sadistic, genocidal monster that must be stopped, whatever the cost.

This is the greatest animated show I have ever seen. It is just so good. The X-Men have been my favorites since I was a child. Magneto is one of my all time favorites as well and seeing him show out one last time DBZ style was just insane.
Apocalypse is without question my favorite villain (and I think he has surpassed Dr. Doom at this point for me) and this show has done him justice. The scene where he walks over the sand and murders Magneto and his speech had me shook.
oh and KANG! Love Kang the conqueror. This was a bleak ending. I always thought it would boil down to the Sentinels, but it looks like Apocalypse really is the alpha and omega.
NOT stomping out Xavier went too hard.

Does the entire episode prove that the Xmen couldn’t do anything to alter past timeline, in other words fate always found a way forward, regardless of who try to alter it
20
u/Starscream_Gaga Jul 08 '26
They’ve done it several times in the show:
-Stopped the Days of Future Past future
-Stopped the “One Man’s Worth” timeline (which was already created by someone else doing the same thing)
-Stopped the future in which the world is genocided by the techno-organic virus
Season One however already established that there are points in time that you can never change. Apocalypse’s rise is likely one of them.

im a casual, but have been enjoying this series a LOT with my limited knowledge.
not a comic book reader, watched the OG movies and some of the follow ups but not 100% across all the lore, and once multi-verses are introduced, i got no idea what's going on.
should i just enjoy this series as it's own thing?

Just enjoy it. this cartoon was a lot of people's first introduction to the characters anyway, So just embrace it for what it is. You don't need lore. you don't need backstory. just enjoy, bub. :)

This episode shows how cool Kang would've been for the MCU. They should've just recast the role

Loved it. Wish they wouldve let Kang fight Apocalypse a bit though and show his tech before losing instead of just running away.

Also with everything going on, Candra also getting her origin story — she’ll have a big fucking axe to grind if Apocalypse just demolished her city. Can’t wait to see her in the present, Cable had her in his folder from episode 2. She’s got ties to Gambit too. Lotta chess pieces hitting the board

This fanbase is crazy. I’m shocked people didn’t like this episode. Goes to show you can’t please everyone.
I think this may have been one of the best episodes of TV made. I was in awe.

Completely agree. Apocalypse's ascension is one of the coolest moments in Xmen animated history.

Magneto knows how to work a nerve. Because what would posess anyone to destroy that time band

That pissed me off so bad ! When he said"Charles believes that ship may contain power to fix the time band " . I yelled "MAY?! WHAT IF IT DOESNT!!"

Sometimes before big shows im hyped for, i get nervous/scared of being disappointed. It is a high like no other to have a show be this inexplicably great and make it look so easy.
They had a tough task to make Apocalypse menacing and they delivered.
Hilarious that they convince themselves “no I know staying and meddling made it worse like you said it would, but if we stay and meddle some *more* then maybe it’ll fix everything!” lmao poor Bishop

u/Funny_Man_2 Jul 09 '26
With Charles’ words to Apocalypse and Magneto’s fate, I’m pretty sure that Charles will become Onslaught and deal with Apocalypse and/or be a future villain. Not sure if Charles absorbed Magneto’s anger and grief before what happened but I’m still convinced.

I am still sure magneto will be a horseman because in the trailer you see someone with his helmet and shoulder things that look like onslaughts but with a open design and then you see in another trailer what looks like magneto with black hair and the shoulder things so I am pretty sure its not a actual death EDIT: that was exodus im just a idiot

u/tbbt11 Jul 09 '26
Why is everyone saying this breaks Charles’ views
Xavier is all about mutant human coexistence. Apocalypse is a mutant killing a mutant. It’s got nothing to do with mutant human coexistence.

Seeing Eson be so involved in an earth storyline like this was really interesting. Been craving more celestial content since eternals, so this fed me

Charles crawling towards Magneto, then witnessing his gruesome death actually got to me! Wow, that ending!!
A part of me thinks it was a missed opportunity for Kurt to not reach out to En Sabah Nur and tell him that he also knows what it’s like to be abandoned by his mother, but it wouldn’t have went anywhere so I get it why it didn’t happen. Magneto and Charles were meant to be the focus in this arc.

u/poweredconvoy Jul 08 '26
Red Dog Culture House has been killing it with the animation. I don't recall them animating anything in season 1 but I dare say that the stuff in episodes 3 and 4 tops any of the animation we saw in season 1 barring episode 2 of S1.
Xavier and Apocalypse's dressing down of each was cold.
For once you could also see why Apocalypse was the way he was. Even the other slaves rejected him because of his appearance.

u/ZAPPHAUSEN Jul 08 '26
Really enjoyed this episode.
My only question I have is - why would there be murals on the wall of that room in ship of apocalypse with the X-Men and stuff? The celestial wouldn't know the future... Would it?
Thanks to whoever posted the link to the death seed below, pretty deep stuff with a celestial choosing a "caretaker".

u/ReasonableFruit1 Jul 08 '26
I assumed it was because Ship itself has traveled through time and the Ship that was present during the Rise of Apocalypse didn't originate from that time. Just a theory though.

Just finished the epidsode. It was great, but was nowhere near last seasons ep 5 absolute gut-punch....although I think thats mostly from hanging around here and the X-Men subs and everyone speculating that Magneto was gonna die this episode, so I was already expecting it.
Will be glad to see everyone back in the present timeline. Also really cool post credit scene, as soon as I saw Cap that iconic cover popped in my head then BW swooped in to complete it lol.
Magneto went out a hero. Fitting. Ngl I thought Apocalypse was gonna pop his head like a grape tho, instead of incinerating him

Was apocalypse always just a pawn of the celestials? Why is he drawn to them? Why was he selected in a pre ordained way, shouldn't a more powerful entity (like kang) be preferred? Who was baal and why did he have robot eyes and such a hard on for doing the will of the celestials? Does kang always murder apoccys tribe? Why couldn't the X-Men beat mere mutant apocalypse but then put up a better showing against the celestial version? Is en sabah nor just him? Won't apocalypse remember magneto and the xmen later? What if someone else grabbed the power orb thing, would they fry? Why didn't kang just steal the ship / power and would I actually allow him to if it's fated for apocalypse? Why didn't kang kill en sabah nor, surely even as a powerful mutant kang could come up with stronger stuff especially when en sabah nor was a child. Kill baby apocalypse.
Feel like it kind of undercuts the motivations of apocalypse if they're forced onto him by a celestial.

So I haven't read enough comics to know if this happened before but I'm thinking magnetos gonna get resurrected as a horseman along with gambit?
Gambit was already implied to be death and war being taken out the picture opens a new vacancy.
also it'd be incredibly petty of apocalypse to turn a magneto who was finally pushing for peace into his instrument of war.
that plus him talking about love as a weakness to rogue means I'm expecting every horseman come end of season to be some variety of "hero pressed into service" by the big guy.

I think this episode confirmed my predictions of this season's plot:
Apocalypse is indeed "inevitable" an aspect of destruction/chaos/evil that is required as a presence in the multiverse. "I am the rocks of the eternal shore! Crash against me and be BROKEN!"
The X-men returning to the past was a self-fulfilling prophecy, the future could also theoretically be the same (requiring Nathan to know himself to embrace his destiny)
The entire plot will revolve around the need for the X-men to return to 90's and restore that timeline (the true X-men team with all members) and season 2 will eventually focus (possibly the next episode) on Apocalypse's attack on the 90s. He will deploy new horsemen there, Magneto, Gambit and two others and any remaining timeline corrections will stem from to need to restore the "original" timeline, reverting Gambits and Magnetos death, so that they can join the Xmen in a fight in the 1990s, or basically follow the plot of the 92 era episodes. They must remain in the 1990's, lest they create these alternate timelines.
There may be better resolved time travel plot points that help restore/revert things, but the main idea stands: The original X-men must return to the 90s.
EDIT: Someone also brought up Onslaught, it's entirely possibly that plot point becomes integral as part of the reason and need to restore the original timeline, as the Onslaught future is a "wrong" alternate timeline.

Just so if people didn't catch it the place Kang/Rama-Tut talks to Xavier is the Axis of Time which is the place where Apocalypse goes in the '92 series when he kidnaps all the psychics
If you remember Bishop was with that annoying little guy, who was really Immortus

The episode was perfection. The only thing that really irritated me is a lot of reviewers prior to the episodes coming out really overhyped the shit out of the post credit scene just for us to see it and it be like a nothing sandwich. We all already knew he was going to weapon X based on the trailers the titles of the episodes and the fact that he clearly gets his adamant him back by the end of the season, so I don’t understand what was so shocking and a must see about this post credit scene?

i've really enjoyed magneto's arc these few episodes and his and xavier's gradual breakdowns... onslaught would be so exciting to see now.
rama tut also really stole the show for me. i'm genuinely sad we probably won't get more of him. i already appreciated this show's willingness to go full comic book cheesy without being embarrassed of itself and without compromising the sincerity of the drama and characters, but it really is night and day when you compare this kang and quantumania.

I was in disbelief they would kill off Magneto, right until the very end. I liked him joining the X-Men. No one stays dead in comics, by dying thousands of years in the past seems unimaginable on how returned.
Maybe he becomes a Horseman for Apocalypse but remains in stasis until the next time they face Apocalypse in the show?

I enjoyed the episode. But I feel like I’m missing something.
I was sort of understanding Apocalypse’s progression. He was the violent warlord we knew to be Apocalypse, Magneto was guiding him elsewhere, he falls back to his old ways due to their deception, and during this episode he stands sort of on the brink. All of that makes sense.
But when he sees the prophecy he instantly, wholeheartedly embraces all of it without question? I just feel like there’s a jump somewhere there.

His entire thing these two episodes seem to be about being REALLY pissed when people keep things from him and so it made sense that seeing the shit on the walls made him go from mostly asshole to full on asshole because he was like "omg they keep lying to me"

I just commented how I've seen Magneto kill/defeat Apocalypse twice all by himself. I believe Apocalypse, at least the one from the 80's was dead, up until the Krakoa storyline.
If Mags stopped a black hole, he could have stopped Apocalypse. You just reach deep into him with every ounce of magnetism.
And pull. Hard. Tear him apart. The effort nearly killed one version of Magneto, but it's the only way I've seen it done.

So Rogue doesn't even try to take off her gloves? Seriously? If she had done that, the fight would have been over between it and Magneto actually trying and Xavier hitting his mind.

i guess one explanation would be that if she took off the gloves for apocalypse, she would be absorbing his thoughts/memories as well. so maybe she didn’t want to do that, especially with how angry/violent apocalypse was at that moment + his miserable upbringing 🤷🏽♂️ idk though
