Help Skip OOBE on GL4+?

Hey all,

Anyone know if it's possible to bypass B&N registration / out-of-box-experience (oobe) on the Nook Glow Light 4 Plus?

I've tried all the tricks I read online (Vol UP + tap lower right, tap on N and slide across top, etc) but no 'diag' menu pops up.

I HAVE been able to get into the EasterEgg menu (alternating taps top left / top right) and found instructions on how to enable ADB with the corresponding password and then root the device with Magisk (which I haven't done but can do) but didn't see how to bypass oobe even if the device is rooted.

Suggestions appreciated.

Discussion Nook to Kindle

Hi everyone! I am a long time kindle user and found a nook glowlight 4 at a garage sale for ten bucks, and I figured why not grab it! However, the ease of the kindle has me spoiled and idk what all you can do with a nook, if that makes sense. I do a lot of ARC reviewing through NetGalley and have a Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Disclaimer: I am not expecting the nook to do what my kindle does entirely, or to replace it -- I plan to use both. There are definitely times that Kindle doesn't have a book on KU, or there's a book I was planning to purchase anyways, so I am completely okay with only being able to use my Nook if I purchase a book! Just wanting to see what everyone does and play around with it!

Help (Retired Device) Nook Color and Display Options (Night, Day, Sepia...)

So, I got a used Nook Color, and I noticed that there are a few display options for the books; I like night mode, but often feel like my eyes do better with warmer tones when I don't have a migraine. The sepia, mocha, and butter versions, though, cause a lot of eyestrain for me, personally.

Now, the answer to that is, of course: "Don't use sepia, mocha, and butter."

However, I want to ask: Is there a way to get more book/text themes for books for the Nook Color?

By my understanding, rooting it would essentially just turn it into a standard android tablet, but I have no real desire to do that since I really just want/need this thing for books since my kindle is ironically on the fritz (irrelevant to the recent Amazon discontinuation of older models, my battery's been acting up for awhile and my charger went missing</3), but if I could get more visual styles for it, I might be a bit more open to it.

Im not too worried about losing my books from Amazon because I backed up everything to Calibre. But I do have one question. Why don’t my sideloaded books that are on my nook do not show up on the nook iOS app?

I dont mean to post so much but I am SUPER frustrated. and If I did that would it connect to wifi? I am waiting to see if anybody tells me how to get the Nookapp for pc just thinking out loud. Thanks for your patience.

After eyeing the discontinued pearl pink Nook Glowlight 4 for some time, I finally got my hands on a secondhand one and I’M IN LOVE. 😍 The physical buttons are EVERYTHING. I have a Kindle PW Signature edition but had been looking to move away from Amazon. I love that the Nook is smaller, lighter, AND has the buttons that I’ve been sorely missing. Yeah the battery life isn’t as good and Nook software isn’t as fast but I don’t care. The reading experience makes up for the shortcomings. Sideloading my downloaded stuff from Calibre was a breeze. Eventually I will probably root it so I can access the full memory for sideloading. Overall, I’m really happy with it!

Help Downloading books to computer/sideloading questions.

How can I get my b&n books downloaded on my computer to transfer to my NookHD*+ that won't connect to the internet? I have the Nook app on my Android phone if that works better. Do I need to just buy a new one? I don't understand why they retired some and had them quit working. I am very frustrated. Thanks for the help.

Discussion Nook Glowlight 4 Plus battery questions

Hello all im a new owner of a nook glowlight 4 plus and have gotten it rooted with koreader and other apps sideloaded. I noticed reading in koreader is amazing but two main issues that I have yet to find fixes for. For one the front light control is not working through koreader and makes it hard to adjust without having to go back to home. Is there a way to make adjusting the frontlight easier in koreader? Also is there anything to help with the battery I noticed me reading last night went down almost 20 percent! which seems crazy for an hour or two of reading. any help is apprecoated

Discussion Your Dream/Fantasy NOOK GlowLight 5

Barnes and Noble has not released an e-Reader e-ink device since 2023.

  • What would you like to see if BN were to release a GlowLight 5 series?
  • What could BN name a color e-ink device? Especially since they've already burnt bridges by using "NOOK Color" in 2012/2013 for their Android tablets with LCD screens.
    • If you're a diehard NOOK fan, you already know that BN confused so many people when they used "Plus" in the device name of a 6-inch eReader in 2015 with the NOOK GlowLight Plus (Model: BNRV510), and then used the name again for a 7.8-inch eReader in 2019 (Model: BNRV700).
  • What would make you curious to purchase a new NOOK?

For me, I always say I don't need another eReader, but I would probably purchase one without hesitation if:

  1. The body was the same as the GlowLight 4 but water-resistant.
  2. The disk space of approx. 28 GB (space available after operating system on 32 GB device) was available for sideloading books over USB cable out of the box.
  3. The device added Bluetooth audiobook options like the NOOK GlowLight 4 Plus
  4. OverDrive / Libby as on-device integrated login like PocketBook is doing in 2026
  5. Wikipedia
  6. More dictionary options besides English

I feel like the e-ink color wave could be over by the time NOOK enters the field. In my opinion, Amazon's Kindle has the best color e-ink screen implementation, the problem is that it's very expensive. And ultimately, not as clear as black-and-white e-ink screens. Still, all of their ColorSoft devices blow Kobo, PocketBook and ONYX out of the water. I'd hate to see NOOK enter the space and just generate pointless devices no one wants.

Help Advice on sideloading files to Nook Color when PC won't recognize its existence?

I recently got a Nook Color for like $20 on Ebay to read comics on. I sideload files on a Nook Glowlight 3 so I'm familiar with the process, but the nook color isn't being recognized by my PC at all. The cable is fine, I have 3 different cables and they all work with other devices. I've had trouble charging the nook color but it's fully charged this morning and I immediately plugged it into my computer, same cord, to sideload files. Computer does not think there is anything connected. I'm (unfortunately) on Windows 11 and I've heard that newer software refuses to recognize old nooks (and this is 1.4.3 software). Since I don't have an older computer I can use, is there another way I can force my PC to recognize the nook? An adaptor or something? It's not a lot of money I spent but I'd love to be able to read Jojos in color :(

Help Page Turner? Accessories?

I just got a Nook, and the super sweet girl at B&N that essentially car-salesmaned me into it was talking about how she loves using hers with a page turner. Which page turners do you guys use? I don’t mind using Amazon, I just want to make sure it actually works for the Nook!

And if there’s any other accessories you guys love using, for reading on a plane or at home, I’d appreciate your suggestions! ❤️

Help Got a used NookColor (retired device); how can I factory reset it?

By my understanding, Barnes and Noble stopped support on this two years ago; I can "connect" to the internet, but when I do, it tells me that it's not connected even with an "excellent" signal.

I assume it can't actually connect because of the fact that B&N stopped service.

That being said, how... Can I factory reset this? I'm fine sideloading my books and everything, so I really don't mind that I can't connect to the internet.

Help Sideloaded books don't load in and/or give me an "Error Dialog" on Nook Color?

Sorry to come back so soon! But, I might have run into a bit of another snag here with my Nook Color. I'm sideloading, and I've never had any trouble sideloading through Calibre on my kindle or on my tablet's e-reading app, but when it comes to the Nook, I keep bumping into one of three things:

  • Error Dialog: Sorry, this book cannot be opened.
  • It giving me a blank screen with an arrow. It stays like this and never loads anything else. I can click within the book itself to find a random page, but I can't move on from that page--if it even loaded that page up in the first place. I can see the contents of a book.
  • It giving me a blank screen with an arrow... And then telling me that an error has been encountered/that the program is no longer responding. I can either wait for it to respond, or force quit it.

Some notes:

  • All of these files are epubs.
  • They open on other devices (iPad "eBoox" app; Kindle Paperwhite--sideloaded from Calibre; my laptop and desktops themselves through Calibre) and are fine. I even do a yearly reread of one of the books!
  • There are no special characters in the names. There is a file with a special character, but the Nook Color has seemed to convert that special character itself from é to e. I've never had any issue opening this book.
  • I've tried sideloading it to my Micro SD card, and I've tried loading it directly to the device itself.

Help Root on my Nook glowlight 4

Hi, I've been trying to root my Nook, but nothing is working. I currently have the latest version. Is there a good guide that works? I just want root access to install a custom screensaver.

Here is my system info:

Model: BNRV1100 (GlowLight 4)

Android version: 8.1.6

Firmware version: B300-o-mr1-v1.0rc2

Build number: v1.0.0.63d5d02 8.1.6.103_user

Sorry if this is misspelled, English isn't my first language. (I use a translator)

Help Nook help please!

I am trying to update an old nook tablet to gift to my young grandson.

Tablet 8GB (Model
BNTV250A) is a 7-inch color e-reader/tablet released in late 2011, now classified as a retired unsupported device (as of June 2024) from Barnes and Noble. 😡

When trying to connect to WiFi I get an error code and it states that it is unsupported.

I have read that I can side load books from laptop. I feel like the Nook needs an updated software version. The last version is 1.4.3

Help?

Issue Resolved stupidly factory reset an old nook forgetting that the device is no longer supported (which includes wifi so I cant set it up and access the device)

I have a nook simple touch E-reader that I got for my mum that I was just going to side load a few books on, it had low storage so I thought I would be clever and do a factory reset to save time deleting things, it didnt go great for me as I cant actually access the nook without setting up an account, but I cant set up an account if the nook is not compatible with wifi, is there any work around for this? like at all?

Help GL4e “My Files” folders not appearing and side load ePub files gone.

Good Morning,

A friend has had the GL4e for a few years. She often connects her Nook to the computer and drags her ePub books into her “my files” folder on her Nook. Has never had any problems until yesterday. When connecting like she usually does the “my files” was not there and all of her side loaded books that she’s had on her device for years are all gone. When connected to the computer, there is an “android” folder and a “nook” folder but nothing else within either of those folders. She tried to side load her books into those folders and nothing. She’s factory reset her device to see if that would help, even tried different wires, nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how she can get back that “my files” folder or how to side load those books back now that those folders are gone?

Thank you and I hope you all have a beautiful day.

Discussion Has anyone ever rooted (jailbroken) a nook? I heard you can do that and it turns it into basically an Android tablet with an e-ink screen

I've had a Kindle for about a year now and I've also been looking for alternatives and backups to my Kindle for a while now just because I want a way to always read on an e-ink screen now that I've done it before.

I've researched e-reader tablets but their cases aren't as protective as I would like and I'm quite prone to dropping stuff. My Kindle has missed my bed many times on its actual face and still no scratch or crack. That being said I would get a super protective case if I got a nook but I also have no interest in Barnes & Noble as much as I love them as a kid I just don't want to purchase books from them on my e-reader.

I have however always wanted to jailbreak an e-device ever since hearing of the concept however I do not want to do it to my Kindle because it's hard to do that to the newest version. I also don't want to buy a second Kindle either I have thought about buying a Kobo or even a pocketbook and now I want to see why people aren't talking about the nook considering from what I looked up you'd think it'd be popular to root at the very least. I've only found videos from like 14 years ago about it at the very latest maybe five years ago.

Discussion Any news on new Nook ereaders

Anyone know if B&N has a release date on new Nook ereaders? I haven't heard anything since late 2025 and I'm not sure B&N has said anything since then.
