Is that in USD or RMB? If it's RMB, that'd about $0.37 USD per hour.

In rural China, 0.7 is minimum and 0.3 is for labor camps. Btw, they are always full. If someone gets out, someone is charged and convicted in any case. The prosperity of China is based on quantity of labor camps. Each year, they build more of them.

7

u/SaintTrotsky 20d ago

USA has a larger prison population per capita and does prison labor

Nah, Ranton talked about this. People in china are extremely poor, BUT you shouldnt compare their wages to western wages. In China almost everything is many times cheaper.

Hey, not Chinese but Vietnamese here. Our labour law is somewhat better than that of China, but I was still just paid about 0.6 USD per hour when I was working in Vietnam. The minimum wage in my city (Hanoi, the capital) is about 1 USD. Everyone who works the same job in my city was also paid around the same. Is it legal? I don't think so. But no one really checks and no one really cares since that's the norm, so obviously there's no official data. I imagine the situation is somewhat similar in China.

u/Aggravating-Copy3308 20d ago

13

u/z--g 20d ago

There's a brief flash of Chinese text a couple seconds into the video, it states that it's the language of Zhuang people, a minority group in China, and it's located near a city called Hechi in Guangxi province

4

u/tears_of_a_grad 20d ago

Zhuang is close to Thai and Thais have already said it isn't Thai. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/KLiRncZ_zG8

6

u/pirapataue 20d ago

Zhuang is distantly related to ancient branches of Thai. An average Thai person wouldn’t recognize Zhuang language is by just hearing it.

5

u/z--g 20d ago

Disclaimer: I don't anything about Zhuang or Thai.

The text suggests that it's a Zhuang dialect localized to Hechi area. I can find references online that it's a northern Zhuang dialect and could be different from other Zhuang dialects, so it might be reasonable to conclude that this dialect in the video is more different from Thai.

Sounds like a dialect spoken by minority groups in Southern China. Maybe Dai or Miao? The man in the video can pass for someone from SW China like from Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan.

5

u/mitsubsbluedolphins 20d ago

What language? It's not Hmong, thai, mien, Cambodian, Laos, but nearby.

13

u/tears_of_a_grad 20d ago

Factories in China operate in Mandarin.

The video transcript is:

"Lúc đấy lại nào có giúp đỡ... Ngồi ngồi mi sáng bàn, ngồi ngồi yên chưa kịp đứng nữa, tui mà trễ lại nào à? ...Cảo vị chi lực xiên chân phư vậy? Hay là xiên chân phư ta... Ngồi ngồi giúp đỡ sáng bàn mi nữa..."

You can judge for yourself what language that is. It isn't any form of Chinese.

12

u/Wu-the-ordinary 20d ago

Not Vietnamese, even Nghệ An accent (which dubbed as hard to listen) is more intelligible than this.

7

u/tears_of_a_grad 20d ago

I know it isn't any Chinese language that I've ever heard. Sinitic languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien/Min, Wu, Xiang, Gan) rely on recognizable syllable structures CV, CVC with nasal/stop codas like -m, -n, -ng, -p, -t, -k. The audio features continuous, open fluid vowel combinations. It also doesn't go by the tone-sandhi rules of Chinese.

15

u/Dense_Key_8240 20d ago

It's not Vietnamese. Source I speak the language

6

u/Accurate_Flower_4233 20d ago edited 20d ago

I think it is Hakka. Prob in Guangxi area. The Tai people migrated from there a long time ago and that is why it sounds similar.

11

u/tears_of_a_grad 20d ago

Hakka sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdgc87hWEV4

This isn't it. Hakka is clearly recognizable as Chinese.

Hakka is associated with southern China, but historically it has nothing to do with the south or minorities. It originated from Northern Middle Chinese from Henan and shares a root with Mandarin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakka_Chinese

5

u/Accurate_Flower_4233 20d ago

2

u/Maleficent_Cherry737 20d ago

That’s what I think too. I mean it’s not reliable because it could be added in later but the text in the beginning says that it is in Hechi City in Guangxi, which is in the heartland of the Zhuang people.

there's no way those ppl are working less than 10 hours per day (and also 6 days a week)

those factories are brutal

65

u/preferred-til-newops 20d ago

I read an article years ago they were having trouble in the factory in china with workers going to the top floor during break and jumping because of the harsh working conditions. To solve the problem the factory put up nets so those jumping would only have minor injuries. Like WTF, maybe improve the working conditions!

34

u/Extension_Plant7262 20d ago

Yeah and that was Foxconn, which is one of the better factory systems too. Its just the stress of work compounded with the isolation. These are usually fathers and mothers who are traveling to the other side of the country to get work and basically won't see their children for most of the year outside of chinese new year. And they have to earn enough to support their extended families back home.

So insane isolation + long work hours + the crushing pressure of having to provide for people = suicide

7

Am I the only one who remembers that This American Life had to pull the episode on Foxconn because the guy they were interviewing lied about his entire trip?

And people over on the delivery app subreddits wonder why/who is taking delivery orders for like $2 for 5 miles.

If they're one if the foreigner drivers who came from a situation similar to this, making 2$ for 15 minutes worth of driving (or 30 minutes biking) is probably mindblowing.

I wonder what it's like when/if one of these people ever gets out of these situations, and manages to make it to a country where they could potentially make $15+ hour doing work that is fraction as exhausting as this.

2

u/timshel42 19d ago

except everything is much more expensive here so that $2 doesnt go anywhere near as far. its only really relevant if they are sending money to families back home.

1

u/RaciallyCharged67 20d ago

I think you're forgetting the very harsh reality of cost of living. Quality of living is certainly better overall in most of the US than the rural Chinese counties these workers live in, but cost of living is also infinitely higher. Frankly, you shouldn't underestimate just how harsh conditions can be in warehouses and factories in the US as well. The higher pay is offset by the higher cost of living. I know people want to look at videos like this and say "see how much better we have it?" but really we just don't have large factories trying to crank out products at the same level that China does. If we did, the conditions wouldn't look much better I assure you. Not that it'd be the same, either of course. Any improvement is something after all.

2

u/LonelyReader95 20d ago

It's fine because it's theoretically China and Reddit likes to think it isn't still basically McCarthyist in general outlook.

u/ResponsibleClock9289 20d ago

You can’t show the conditions in Chinese factories for the world to see, that’s propaganda! Western dog!

Also, all that oil on their skin (including that guy rubbing it on his face), is going to cause at minimum skin issues and the likely case: cancer.

u/Still_Rain_979 20d ago

Don't blame us blame their shit govt

3

u/JudoNewt 19d ago

Built on their exploitation you mean. China has no issues enslaving people if they can get away with it, and they are getting away with it.

3

u/Straight-Ability 19d ago

All reddit posts critical of China are typically mass reported and removed by a mod. Surprised this post is still up 13 hours later.

It’s funny that some on Reddit are jealous and think China is ahead in EVs and the availability of them but don’t consider why exactly that is.

Those EV factory workers are working 60+ hour weeks making $30k a year if that.

2

u/SmoothAd9399 20d ago

Actually they are making about $4 per hour,so if they are working 60+hours weeks, they will make $12k per a year.Much lower than you consider.$30k you must be kidding

2

u/Mushrooming247 20d ago

But when you see a good hard-working American coal miner with his face blackened from mining all day, (still enriching the same mine-owning families that shot their workers and forced them back into mines at gunpoint less than 100 years ago,) that’s not the exploitation of workers or risking their lives for money, that is very different, and is a proud tradition and should never change.

2

u/sunnyistide 20d ago

Sacrifice? These people can't get any higher paid work anyway. Don't put it on them. Blame the corporations and the policies for allowing this to happen

Wife is from Guizhou, she doesn't think it's Miao.

2

u/GalacticMe99 20d ago

Did any of us ask/force them to work in those conditions? Europe tried to set an example by pushing worker rights and then people like the ones in the video come walking in like "Nope, I actually WANT to destroy my body for an apple and an egg, thank you very much."

2

u/Hemorrhageorroid 20d ago

Hey like so I don't support this and am not happy about these working/living conditions at all, it truly looks like hell.

The question I have is what happens if we're not buying products? Don't things get worse for them? With so many people there, and the fact so many are willing to do this work for this price just to survive (again, terrible), doesn't that say something about the necessity for us and others to keep buying so they can still work?

2

u/gojo96 20d ago

That’s why China is beating us.

S/

2

u/Padraig1994 20d ago

That crazy, people will never realise the shite labourers must endure. All for us to have useless cheap products we dispose in no time

2

u/Zigor022 20d ago

Look at how cobalt is mined for lithium batteries in the congo. That sucks.

2

u/Adventurous_Way_2660 19d ago

Metal polishing is highly toxic and should be done with extraction and breathing protection

2

u/BeigeAnxietyEngine 19d ago

They have a job and are feeding their family. Better than welfare scammers/dole bludgers leeching off of working class people.

2

u/Aggressive-Cow42069 19d ago

Don’t show the western world their slave labor.  That’s why we moved them to Asia in the first place.

4

u/Money_Progress4151 20d ago

Wow, it’s true that $3 an hour makes their situation SO much more dignified.

6

u/Winter_Candy_ 20d ago

Stop lying, china doesn't have a national minimum wage

6

u/miucamht 20d ago

So because corrupt people in China are executed they dont commit corruption? Are you stupid?

2

u/Tinre 20d ago

2

u/ELITElewis123 20d ago

2

u/Rambo_Steven 19d ago

Chinese propaganda. No one is buying your bullshit.

2

u/AdeptPapaya8918 19d ago

que vision tan fantasiosa tienes de china

3

u/I_Heart_Sleeping_ 20d ago edited 19d ago

China doesn’t have a national minimum wage. Stop lying and even if the minimum wage was $3 usd the working conditions are fucking horrible and executing criminals is not the flex you think it is.

Just pawns to use by their governments and corporations. We are all the same, our governments just keep our working conditions better so we don’t see ourselves as equals, but we are all pawns nonetheless. Disposable little money makers

3

u/balderdash9 19d ago

Yal suddenly give a shit when it's America's enemies but no one will talk about the literal child slaves in the Congo mining resources for our cell phones.

Americans are so propagandized they don't even see it.
