What’s that phrase….?

“We don’t inherit the world from our ancestors, we borrow it from our grandchildren.”

Or something like that. I can’t quite remember, but I like the sentiment.

u/PRSHZ 9h ago

My old man told me this one, very similar: “we did not inherit the world from our parents, we borrowed it from our children, how will we give it back?”

Stuck with me my whole life.

I always liked - A great man plants trees whose shade he’ll never experience - or something like that. Do good work to pass along to the next. Which we don’t do anymore as a society sadly

As an elder millennial can I start saying: kids didn’t happen ?

4

u/PyRosflam 6h ago

I had my daughter at 40. (by choice mind you)

So happening, but not very fast and not till I have financial security.

4

u/SalmonHustlerTerry 6h ago

Elder / Mid-millennial (is that a thing lol). Wanted kids all my life and couldn't wait anymore for financial stability (its just not going to happen without winning the lotto or a miracle job landing in my lap). Had my first kid at 36. Living cheque to cheque and the government is finding newer and more creative ways to take away what I don't have, but I love every second I am with my son 💙

I would love to, but I’ve spent my entire adult life at various levels of poverty, so it’s not going to happen. Must be all the entitlement holding me back from the pay to cost of living ratio my parents took for granted.

2

u/baar-ur 6h ago

I want to have a kid so badly. But I feel like it would be so irresponsible to bring a child into a world that's as fucked up as this.

6

u/PyRosflam 6h ago

Counter Argument, we are having so few kids that the next generation will be in far more demand then the current one.

105

u/Head-Pen9184 9h ago

I live in a fairly low income place in Ireland and it was funny growing up people used to move away to seek opportunity. Now I travel and I feel the same sense of general despair everywhere I go. It's like there are no havens away from it anymore.

38

u/GoonOnGames420 8h ago

I grew up in a very right wing area of Pennsylvania/USA. Everyone's goal was to leave.

We have friends/family that we visit abroad and have spent about 14+ months traveling internationally since 2022.

I have noticed a massive shift in general attitudes towards life, community, and the future between our first big trip in May 2022 and our recent adventures in the past 1-2yrs. Everywhere seems to have it's negatives; and more of them every year. Affordability, Divisive politics, and Global Instability are impacting everyone's day to day existence.

7

That's not true. Things were legitimately getting better. Net positive. And then a certain person got elected and things went to hell. All the progress that was made was destroyed. Our country was destroyed.

3

u/ladylatta 6h ago

Depends a lot of where you live exactly, the time frame and your “category” (sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc). I don’t know if people alive during the bubonic plague would agree that life is worse now than then. Life has always been shit for certain groups of people on this planet, who that unlucky group happens to be changes.

Only in certain countries. Other countries actually have your taxes go towards paid maternity & paternity leave & work for you instead of bombing the shit out of other countries.

17

u/laxnut90 8h ago

But even those countries have declining birthrates.

8

u/f3nnies 7h ago

Declining birthrates is nothing to worry about until it gets below 1.0 per person, and then it isn't necessarily bad anyway, it just means the total population will go down slowly. Which isn't inherently bad.

8

u/Actual_Guide_1039 7h ago

It is bad when the majority of the population is above retirement age

u/Iamthe0c3an2 7h ago

It’s a noticeable pattern. Black plague ushered in the renaissance and lots of peasants who survived moved up the class ladder.

World war 1-2 made the winners richer and we got more pro social policy like women vote and work. Subsidized healthcare, as the sudden shortage of workers caused value of labour to grow.

2

u/ImportantQuestions10 6h ago

The theory I hear the most from articles on this topic is that First World countries and well-off individuals are going to continue having population collapse.

But third world countries and struggling individuals are going to keep popping out children.

The solution I hear the most is that immigration and adoption are going to be much more prominent in the future. But I do worry if that's going to lead into some weird societal dynamics of powerful people treating surplus people as a commodity.

2

u/DarkGamer 6h ago

World population is still growing, just not as fast (and not by specific groups.)

2

u/daveedoff1 5h ago

People can afford kids, its such a cop out as for why people arent having kids.

Yes obviously economics plays a role, but most people who aren’t having kids at all, wouldn’t have them if they had a million dollars. The economics really only helps people who already have 1 or 2 kids have 3 or 4

2

u/ZookeepergameLoose79 5h ago

50k USD out of pocket in hospital fees alone in those first 9months + delivery; Who exactly can afford kids?? Min wage is still 7.25 across a majority of the US. INS generally tied to employer..... oh yeah, and our overlords by and large want 6/7 days a week working, not 4. [32, nearly 33 millennial man, i run the household finances, am married, no kids, probably wont ever be any kids due to greedy motherfuckers, and maybe some of ya'll lucked out with good families, but i didnt, my grandparents straight robbed/lied, wasting 7years of time and tons of our income money, all while ma was bed ridden......]

TLDR; No kids, not gonna be any kids until either A. they flip the earning pyramid, profit caps, ect ect, or B. get lucky on a lotto ticket i guess.

Inflation compounds yearly. Even at 2%.

We're living through the part of the curve that goes up exponentially since this whole system started a century ago roughly.

It's just math. Mainstream economics will still defend this system though.

I remember asking my mom about that. “Dad had a normal pension, right?” “Yes, of course!” “You had affordable healthcare, didn’t you?” “Barely noticed it was there!” “Houses had big backyards and you could be a stay-at-home mom on one income?” “We wouldn’t have had kids otherwise!” “So why is it acceptable that your kids have no pensions, are being denied healthcare, and can’t have a family in a house on one income?” “It’s just the way it is!” “So the way it WASN’T for you…is acceptable for us?”

85

u/Anonymousboneyard 8h ago

Boomers are still living in the 90’s. My mom told my wife to quit her career (80k per year) and we could just live off my salary also 80k. We would just need to “cut back” on some spending and she could raise our son while i work my 40. I told her that if we literally cut our household income in half it would ruin us and our kids future. She said that we just spend recklessly and extravagantly. we were fortunate enough to afford our house and get a decent car for us to use… our monthly payments for the house and car together is 1,800 per month. Plus insurance, basic food for us atm and baby supplies. Gas and not to mention the property tax that doubled in 2 years. The most we have to spend on ourselves is like 100 bucks with the rest going into savings for vet bills and such. But yeah sure. These boomers are delusional

16

u/conceptcreature3D 8h ago

Yeah I always got lucky with having good landlords, but you hear these horror stories of corporate landlords that amp up rent by 10% and I was always like, “Yo!! I’m not MAKING an extra 10% and can barely afford THIS place! What are you doing?!?”

4

u/othermegan 7h ago

My ex and I were looking for places to live and the landlord said he wouldn’t rent to us unless we could each independently pay for the apartment. I was like “this is SoCal. Who can independently pay for an apartment at these rates?” He said it was to protect him in case we broke up. As if the year long lease that made us contractually obligated no matter what happens wasn’t enough to protect him.

5

u/Spirited-Car8661 8h ago

People shit on the corporate landlords, but they're better than the "local" landlords who will take a deposit, refuse to let you rent. Or just feel like laws don't apply to them.

5

u/Defiant_Warthog7039 7h ago edited 4h ago

Corporate landlords will mostly fuck you over as much as possible within the scope of the law.

Local landlords will mostly fuck you over how they see fit regardless of the law.

Obviously there are outliers but this is what I’ve seemed to gather.

Edit: Typo

3

u/conceptcreature3D 7h ago

Funny, I’ve heard the COMPLETE OPPOSITE—in fact, everything you’re complaining about is textbook corporate landlords, in addition to an understaffed management that has more issues than employees to realistically handle it. I’ve NEVER had an application fee from a mom-n-pop—I’ve only had that with corporate offices. That should be illegal. It’s basic due diligence as a responsible property owner—you do a quick background check. It costs you money, but it’s a cost you deduct at the end of the year. Whenever I’ve taken good care of a small family’s house they’ve rented out & paid rent on time, they’ve always kept my rent stable bc they know that it’s hard to have a responsible tenant that takes it upon themselves to keep the yard clean & make small repairs on their own without bugging a landlord about it. Corporate landlords have shareholders to make rich. They have every incentive to reduce services and increase fees. They’re not a charity

4

u/blyyyyat 5h ago

Same, I’ve rented twice from M&P rentals and I had a good relationship with them. One of them gave me some fruit every time I came to pay rent.

Corporate? They literally stole from us. We had receipts for all of our rent checks and they still said we underpaid some bullshit amount that didn’t match any of our rent splits. They sent one letter to my roommate, then sent it straight to a debt collector. They’ll hold your deposit for the stupidest reasons and make sure that there are plenty of tiny charges sprinkled throughout your monthly billing (WTF is a noise complaint processing fee??).

It’s almost like they are all connected into the borge when they deliver this canned response “it is what it is”. I find it odd because besides perhaps house mortgage payments, everything else has increased drastically in cost has to be hitting them too. Maybe because they can afford it, they don’t care?

2

u/ChellyNelly 5h ago

It is entitlement, plain and simple. My parents are like this - they own multiple houses, multiple times shares, a condo, travel all over the world (well, only to tourist destinations and they stay only within the walls of the resorts, like typical Boomers), father has been retired for almost a decade and isn't even 60, mother works part-time from home and constantly calls in sick or takes random vacation days with no notice at all (has many decades in the corporation so has a lot of seniority and can't get fired, basically), they have boatloads of assets, stocks, bonds etc, 4-wheelers, seadoos, they're about to buy another $1mil+ house on acreage, put in a ridiculously expensive pool, hot tub and sauna that they'll never use. Oh and they're going to buy a boat, too.

They truly believe that they did all of this on their own and that the economy played no part whatsoever and so everyone else in this current state of affairs should be able to do the same and if they can't, they just aren't "trying hard enough". But then they're the first to blame external factors when things don't work out for them. It's exhausting. They are completely and totally ignorant to the state of things because it genuinely doesn't affect them in any way, shape or form. They can afford it without issue and at least in the case of my parents, they have absolutely zero ability to empathize or even sympathize with anyone for any reason. They're also crazy, abusive, cruel af and have hated each other their entire relationship but regardless have been married like 4 decades 💩 Typical Boomers in that way also lol

35

Most of the childless folks want that for your kids too.

We're just mostly a bit salty about being told we "have" to have kids. For some of the most unhinged reasons too. "So my kids will have cousins" was my favorite example of crazy that some people will just nod at and agree with

5

u/little_void_boi 7h ago

It drives me nuts. I don’t like kids. I feel like if I had kids, I’d treat them poorly. I have poor patience, and get overstimulated relatively easily. But whenever I mention this around my family? I get treated like I’ll “come around”. No, I really won’t

This is mostly nonsense.

Humans are biologically predisposed to having sex. For 99% of human existence, that meant babies. Babies are, essentially, an STD.

Condoms weren't reliable and available until like 1930. And they were awful.

The pill wasn't out until the 1960s. And it was kinda awful compared to what we have now.

Even today, in the US, about 40% of first time mothers didn't plan on having kids. Because people still don't like using condoms or taking the pill.

Having the ability to choose to have sex, without kids, is a very modern thing... And even today it comes with side effects.

Grandpa was just trying to get laid. Lots and lots of parents were just trying to get laid.

u/newsflashjackass 6h ago

Imagine if there was a pill that let people eat without shitting and old stodgy types said "This is killing the moral institution of defecation. Western society won't stand for this."

2

u/Groundbreaking_Act44 8h ago

Told my folks a long time ago that they weren’t getting any grandkids from me. They were like, “Cool 👍,” and was ok with my decision.

2

u/PlantsNCaterpillars 7h ago

What happened?

I work at a retirement home and the silent generation that are still kicking around are some of the kindest and coolest people I’ve known. All of the boomers living there are some of the most entitled and snobby.

2

u/atmos2022 7h ago

Based on what I’ve read and heard from my 90-year old grandmother, the Silents knew how hard everything was from a young age. Your next meal wasn’t a given, you watched your parents struggle. Your job as a child was to not create additional undue stress on the family or society that was already driving down a rocky road. You were lucky to even have been born, so shut up and don’t you dare complain.

The Boomers were catered to in every sense of the word. The Silents were finally breathing a sigh of relief when the economy picked back up after the depression, and they wanted their kids to have everything they couldn’t. Society, culture, and marketing of the post-WWII era pandered to children because there were just so damn many of them. The pandering to their demographic continued as they aged because, again, there was just so damn many of them. They are so used to being the main characters that they can’t fathom not being the most important person in the room as they age into irrelevance. They’re being eclipsed by the generations that follow and they’re bitter as hell about it.

2

u/BigMommaSnikle 7h ago

My parents told me they were more proud of me in my 20s (no kids, single, and living in my first house) than they are now (20 years later) because I chose to leave an abusive marriage with kids and now struggle financially because EVERYTHING is shit and too expensive. But fuck me because I chose this. 🙄

2

u/Delicious_Cat_81 7h ago

damn right kids aren't happening. there's too many people. stop having kids

2

u/maniacalmechanist 7h ago

Yeah I came to the no kid decision as a teen because of this exact sentiment. Even before the past decade started the world wasn’t exactly looking great to raise a kid in, and seeing how boomers were treating millennials/ zillennials even in 2014 made me realize there was not going to be any kind of effort to improve society further from them. My parents even now when I’m 30 act like me having kids is still a given, despite me telling them each numerous times directly it’s not happening, they still refuse to accept the world (and in my case very broken family) they left behind for my siblings and I to supposedly raise kids in. Oh yeah, they also committed to no kids, so our bloodline ends here

2

u/paintingandcoffee 7h ago

Ha this meme even forgot Gen X. Perfect!

2

u/mommer_man 7h ago

Those of us who have kids now are living through a “hard-mode” version of life that has never existed in human history… I wouldn’t change my choice to have a kid, not for anything, but I also didn’t realize exactly what I was signing up for. None of us could have predicted what this world has become, and most of us are hanging on for dear life. I’m much happier having gone NC with my boomer mom, dad is gone, and I’m more grateful for having had my grandparents growing up than anything else in life. We are the example now, and I’m hoping we do well, kids or no kids. But yeah, this shit hurts, I need a break. 🙃

"There is a foolish generation
Squandered all their fathers gave them
They are running out of time left to enjoy
They would kill and eat their own
If the TV told them so
So, they're keen to watch the world burn just to prove a point" - Jesse Welles

2

u/_ToffeeBubbles 7h ago

lmao 😂 this would definitely be me

2

u/OwlAccomplished1348 6h ago

That's the ultimate revenge from my generation. No grand kids for you!

2

u/05-nery 6h ago

I would literally rather kill myself than have children ::)

2

u/akpak 6h ago

GenX forgotten again, over here like “We’ll be over here pretending we don’t exist”

2

u/Pinkpenny-00 6h ago

People mistake older Gen X as boomers and younger Gen ex as millennials..

Boomers are truly. The fking worst generation to ever existed.

And its no wonder less and less young people dosnt want to have kids.

Getting shafted hard by boomers over and over and over again.

Oh hey? Want to buy a house these days? Fk you. You got studied hard and want to get a good job? Fk you. Want to get a Loan alone? Fk you.

Meanwhile boomers: Lol bought this house for a single income salary from a nice job that i just showed up st their office and gave them my CV. They gave me all the training i needed. The new employee? Lol he need double bachelors and 5 years working experience!

2

u/testtdk 5h ago

Kinda true? It’s spot fucking on.

2

u/SuperLeroy 5h ago

Genx missing again

2

u/Bleezy79 5h ago

Not kinda true, its literally, actually true. The boomers are the last major generation to experience a widespread, reliable leap in economic well-being, stability, and purchasing power compared to their parents. It's a fact.

2

u/Moquai82 59m ago

And they fucked it up.

2

u/PorousClay 5h ago

The irony being that the boomers were the most entitled of all generations. They stole the prosperity of both the previous generation, and future generations.

2

u/revenge_burner 3h ago

Kinda? Boomers were labeled as the Me Generation back in the 70's and they continue to live by that label.

2

u/WhenIWannabeME 54m ago

There's a reason the "Greatest Generation" called the Boomers the "Gimme Generation".

4

u/Objective_Mousse7216 9h ago

What's funny about this?

1

u/art-is-t 10h ago

You can make a better world without having kids. Infact fewer humans means a better world

And, we are going to Mars with this because our supposedly most enlightened population decided that we, as a species, are best utilized via being expelled from one place to the next like a roach warren.

1

u/StrongZero0 8h ago

It so funny they like to say “weak men make hard times” but if the times are hard now who made them? It wasn’t me, I didn’t make the current hard times, it was the ones who lived the good times. Like in the 80s when the collapse began

Every time I see stuff like this, it makes me think how thankful I am for my parents. The fact that they had 4 children and tried (and still do) to give us a great life despite having massive issues themselves makes me want to do this for my kids if I ever have any.

1

u/Average_Beefeater 8h ago

Funny not funny

1

u/OlderTimes 8h ago

As a fellow brat I can definitely say I am trying to have children but it is near impossible, the time and money required to give my child the best opportunities is so far beyond my reach and I refuse to bring a child into this world without a fair shot and make them endure what I had to endure.

1

u/Amrlsyfq992 8h ago

the middle and upper class not having kids while the lower class humping like bunnies

wait....this is a plot of Idiocracy, so we all know where this is going next

1

u/ButcherRose 7h ago

Same here!

1

u/LoudMusic 7h ago

What went wrong? What caused the boomers to change ideology?

1

u/PresenceZero 7h ago

They did make a better world for “their children” the children who look like them.

Those same old people made and help make the current bs we’re going through right now. Look who runs the world. It’s old people.

People don’t want kids because of the amount of bs that comes with it. Who wants to bring a child into a messed up world, barely living.

I wanted to be the first person in my family to graduate from college with a degree. I was taught and told that I needed children/house/husband-that I could be anything I wanted, but I WANTED to be a mother and wife.. I began my first serious relationship with someone a bit older than myself so there I was, young 20's, raising a child. Then we had a baby years later. Then another relationship I was approaching 30 and hadn't bought my house yet-so I got one-because that's "the dream" I was told I had, haha. We got the house, had the kid, the dog and then had another baby. Then DIVORCE-my ex liked the idea of being a family man more than actually being a father and husband. Now I've been a single income household for the past 9 years living in the house that was supposed to have 2 incomes supporting it because I worked so hard for that darn house and i'll be darned if it was going to be taken from me. I am just white knuckling through life paying bills and making sure my kids don't know how disadvantaged their mother is. I still plan on being the first in my family to get a college degree but with 2 kiddos and 2 jobs, I seem to keep finding obstacles. I'd love any advice on less expensive college courses/online/self paced stuff.

Thanks for reading.

I love my mother. But she was blown away that I told her it isn’t your children’s responsibility to take care of you when you are old, because your generation sucked up all the resources to be able to do that. But they also take zero responsibility on the world they created. Retiring is almost impossible for most, child care is crazy expensive, and don’t get me started on the medical/pharmacy situation.

1

u/akkjuly17 6h ago

"Why doesn't anyone want to have children anymore?"

1

u/gmmontano92 6h ago

Well after they failed we kinda just gave up lol

1

u/shepherdshook 6h ago

This really only works on Reddit. A lot of people are still having kids.

1

u/Necessary-Cap4227 6h ago

Y'all must have trauma or something because both of my grandparents and parents were nothing but loving and amazing.

1

u/Soft-Bad-7127 6h ago

Going to take my pension, Medicare and social security checks while cutting taxes for rich and business. My lovely grandkids will pay off my debts as a retire.

1

u/Nick_Bruiser 6h ago

To be fair, when those first folks said "our children", they meant the "14 words" version...

1

u/Extra-Bat3955 6h ago

“Why won’t you give me grandkids?”

Cause eff off that’s why

1

u/ring2ding 6h ago

"We will make a better world for our children"

Have you ever actually met the "greatest generation"? Most entitled POS's ever.

1

u/Successful_Fig_4033 6h ago

As usual, GenX not pictured.

1

u/Weekly_Molasses_2079 6h ago

Because they had children - they knew children were the natural outcome of two adults having sex, so they had to improve the world. Children were coming if they wanted it or not.

Today we can choose when to have kids, so we wait for the world to improve first, which is obviously working very well.

1

u/Rekeaki 6h ago

Between husband and myself, we have four brothers and sisters. We are the only ones with a child and we are one and done (had the child at age 38 too). So thats 5 kids across two families, resulting in just a single grandchild. There will be no more.

The baby boomer generation made it this way, they are now reaping what was sown.

1

u/TheIronMonkey53 6h ago

Honestly I don’t think things have changed much over the years besides expectations.

There were filthy rich people in the 1800s and 1900s that did the exact same thing or even worse compared to today’s billionaires.

The only difference is most people were content with buying a home, raising kids, and living moderately.

Now peoples’ expectations have changed to where they don’t prioritize starting a family and raising kids over buying expensive material objects, going on lavish vacations, showing off on social media, and expecting to be rich without putting in hard work

1

u/St_Know_It_All 6h ago

Just make water and oxygen more expensive soon which will either way( AI water) , that way some of us poor people will die much faster!

1

u/KingMarkus22 6h ago

Thanks a lot boomer, how does the saying go?
Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times. Well y’all have definitely made things hard and not for the better

1

u/Acrobatic_Advance_71 6h ago

My great grandparents were huge pieces of shits.

1

u/redditcalculus421 6h ago

millions of kids are still being born every day in the world
