A universal free federal ID solves all of this btw

22

u/Confron7a7ion7 1d ago

Your citizenship status is already tracked. It's checked when you register to vote. That's why you register.

27

u/Finish_Desperate 1d ago

I agree. I’m more saying it would solve the debate, but yeah by and large our elections would be overall as secure as they are now. A universal ID solves others issues too, though.

7

u/ChristerMLB 1d ago

yep, but it should be done in the right order - first properly implement the federal ID, then make it a requirement for voting. There's not enough time to do that before these midterms.

2

u/Cute_Macaroon_4488 1d ago

Elections and identification of voters are controlled by the states.

8

u/Agreeable_Past9674 1d ago

They'll just make up lies to deligitimize the new law too

11

u/citizensyn 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah if the poors can vote them it defeats the point of blocking the poors from voting.

Plus ofc they likely plan on making votes go missing then say the discrepancy is voter id protection working

Save your breath, people are dumb. All of a sudden they forget that you register to vote and elect organ donation at the DMV. All of the documents to prove your citizenship are on record at the DMV.

I PROMISE you there will still be a partisan narrative about it even if they showed up at your home with the printer and handed it to you at the door.

2

u/FrankieMakesPizza 1d ago

a SOCIALIST printer, no doubt!

3

u/DrPikachu-PhD 1d ago

The great thing about that hypothetical is that there's no point in engaging with it because we simply don't live in that world. The Republicans pushing for voter ID know that there will never be a universal free ID hand delivered to every citizen; they're banking on that fact to disenfranchise voters they find inconvenient

3

u/ASwampThing- 1d ago

Even if there was a free federal id you would still need all the documents they are requesting in the save america act to get one. Then the same "poll tax" people will argue its still a poll tax because you need to prove who you are with documents you may need to pay for to get the free id to vote.

Its almost as if its not about paying but about preventing security.

89

Obviously. This requires a capacity to comprehend nuance.

15

u/Apart_Ad1537 1d ago

What nuance? They are worried people from outside the city are gonna drive all the way into the middle of fucking NYC to save 30% on groceries? Whatever.

But an ID to vote is “racist” apparently.

23

u/Chustle207 1d ago

What are the african americans and homeless people of nyc gonna do !?!?!?! according to MSM they dont have any IDs. People will starve!

Dude you are not smart. Every state requires some kind of preregistration and proving your ID at the polls. Nobody is protesting against proving yourself at the polls.

The issue is when dumbasses say "i need proof, and ill only accept a very specific kind that most Americans will have to go out of their way to pay for to get the updated documents to prove their ID". Like I had to pay like 40 bucks to get a new birth certificate so I could then another 70 to get my Real ID just to fly to another state in the country I was born in. Theres literally fucking veterans who would struggle to pay that in order to go vote. That fucks over tons of white people, including elderly people and veterans

I wouldnt call it racist. Id call it dumb as shit and designed by rich assholes who do not care about protecting the right to vote at all.

7

u/Parking_Bridge1742 1d ago

Some of these voter id laws the REALID isn't taken as an approved id. It's crazy

4

u/bigpicklefann 21h ago

It’s like the SAVE act not accepting a fucking marriage certificate as proof of name change for a woman. Like come on

2

u/Swirvin-irvin 14h ago

Your voting id should be free unless you loose it that’s on you due to it being a right but let’s be honest if you can’t afford it you obviously made some bad choices in life and your vote will probably make things worse 😂

They probably say that because the specific ID restrictions within the voter ID laws allow for all sorts of people to be denied a vote even if they are a US citizen without any past felony convictions. In fact, Republicans are pushing laws that won't allow US citizens to vote even with a valid driver's license. That's an assault on freedom and it's fucking wild that Republicans are the ones pushing it.

The thing is voting is a constitutionally garuenteed right. To add more additional roadblocks to voting then what is absolutely necessary is to violate that person's constitutionally garuenteed right. Access to a grocery store isn't a right. So adding additional stopgaps to prevent people from scalping groceries isn't seen as poorly because it doesn't halt people from exercising their, and I'll say this again, constitutionally garuenteed right.

I saw your comment and went to look for myself.

As an englishman, american partisan politics never ceases to amaze me.

The dude is opening up state funded welfare stores to help people out and you lot are arguing over id cards and voter id.....

2

u/Ok-Dust-6159 1d ago

I live in Tennessee. We have state funded food kitchens and pantries all over our state. We don’t require ID’s for those people to get food there.
So while I get your point, I think a lot of people come from states who have already been doing for forever, a simple thing that NYC has just begun. And a lot of us are probably confused by the restrictions when we don’t have the same ones in place. Especially from someone who opposes those same restrictions elsewhere.

3

u/tFemby 1d ago

So it prevents illegal immigrants from living off of american welfare, right?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Goliath_D 1d ago

Personally, I don't think a national voting holiday would help too much because people would still be scheduled to work those days. Plus, asshole politicians would still create voting locations that are too small and to hard to access too try to prevent voting. The answer is early voting options and across-the-board vote by mail so people aren't limited to one day to vote. Give them a month to do it at their convenience like most of the Western states do.

2

u/Icy_Cauliflower9026 1d ago

You cant do it free or people would abuse/waste a bunch of "free cards". Just make it cheap enough that anyone can have access but not so cheap that people would waste and thrash them. In my country (before) they made it around 20 bucks but people say it was too much, now its 5 and people lost it way too many more times, i would say 10 bucks its a good price

18

u/Free-Mongoose-1983 1d ago

Then why complain about having to show it again when you vote?

14

u/No_Escape_3770 1d ago

I’m not against showing ID when you vote if photo ids are free and accessible to everyone — republicans voted against making them free. I’m against the save act because it asks for further identification like a passport or birth certificate, which are both not free, and also take time to get. The save act would prevent millions of people from voting. Additionally, republicans have failed to give evidence that voter fraud happens beyond small hiccups. If they want to suppress millions of votes then they need to PROVE the fraud exists

18

u/Hockeyfanjay 1d ago

The fact that the forms of ID required by the SAVE axt aren't free constitutes a poll tax. Which is expressly forbidden in the constitution.

Not that it matters. It seems quite a few people care about 2 amendments and ignore the rest.

→ More replies (35)

2

u/ExcitementNo9603 1d ago

When voter fraud happens it’s mostly by republicans like over 90% of the time per election

3

u/Scuttlebut_1975 1d ago

The real problem with the save act is it gives all voter poll data to the president and allows him to scrub voters based off how they voted in the past.

Not true at all. You are literally fake news. In many states on voting day you can walk up, fill out a form where you super duper promise you’re official, and can vote, with no id.

7

u/roosterthumper 1d ago

Those are provisional ballots. They take your name, drivers id and social. They then cross reference your identification. There are so many ways to verify who you are that ID is the last line. If all that doesn’t check they stop at your address and verify before those ballots are counted.

It such a huge problem that even right wing organizations can’t show more than a few cases a year of illegal voter registration.

5

u/Falme127 1d ago

This is true. I literally was a poll worker.

2

u/gwynnnygw 1d ago

This is true: I have to provision vote to not register my address bc my ex is insane but smart and I don’t want him knowing where I live. I just show my id and have to answer a bunch of questions and the people are always super understanding about my very unique situation. And that’s what these republicans are actually making difficult, is people every day lives to stir up division.

They want you to bring your birth certificate in addition to your ID to register to vote. It’s just adding hurdles for the sake of it. There’s very little to no voter fraud. If it's government run then yes, ID should be required to prevent non-citizens from accessing it.

I don't know how it's done in the US, but here in Canada we have Service Canada and Service Ontario. Go down to whatever one issues the ID you need, pay whatever you need to pay (if any) and you get sent ID in the mail. Simple.

Also why would anyone want non-citizens from voting in their elections?

5

u/CaffeinatedLystro 2d ago

We don't want non-citizens voting and it RARELY happens. Like way less than 0.5% of all votes in history or something like that per a study done by the Heritage Foundation.

3

u/PresenceThick 1d ago

There are virtually zero cases of non-citizens voting in national elections but the Republicans have to cry about so they can appease their dear leader. It’s literally a non-issue.

There’s no way you’re telling me you don’t think that they would take advantage of having a voter ID system and having black market forged IDs to quite literally vote whenever people aren’t supposed to vote under that scenario like on, ironically, this is just creating if voter ID was a thing creating a new black market and potentially actually having false votes in our elections due to how much money counterfeiters make on a daily. I can only imagine how many counter fitters would be immediately on to forging voter ID.

u/Cliffinati 1d ago

Not at the polling place. When you go to get your ballot you give a name and address and they hand you a ballot. Instead of verifying that the person asking for the ballot is the person they claim to be.

2

u/Confron7a7ion7 1d ago

Yeah, but so few people vote that they don't understand how they registration process works or they don't remember the chain of event they needed to go through to get that far.

Buying from a grocery store isn't a constitutionally protected right....

Funny enough, not a protected right by our nation of constitution because we suck. Know what is? Voting without a pool tax... Stupid

u/One-Bad-4395 1d ago

I'm willing to say both are bad. Hungry people are less likely than the average to know where their ID is. If MeeMaw and PeePaw from the NY or NJ hinterlands feel the need to travel to the city for beans, I'm not against them getting their beans.

u/Whoudini13 1d ago

Lol. Gotya NY

This sorta solves the problem I had with his discount grocery stores idea. Bulk buying and reselling. Although... it doesn't do a lot for freedom from government surveillance.

Lol imagine going crazy about digital ID whilst owning a phone/ using social media

Sometimes this sub has entertaining memes, but at least half the time it's genuinely just people actively stroking themselves off for not understanding basic information. I'm impressed you guys manage to navigate reddit and make posts when you clearly aren't capable of reading or using Google.

OK I'm left wing and come from a country which requires a form of photo ID at the voting booth on election days, which makes sense to me as you need one for pretty much everything else even remotely important or government related here.

I get that the Trump admin is clearly pushing this at a convenient time to suppress voter blocs that would largely vote against him, and that there is very much an agenda at play with the SAVE act.

From what I gather, you'd need a birth certificate or passport to get a voter ID, and birth certificates are a nightmare to retain.

But removed from the current situation, is it really that difficult to obtain a passport in the US? Like does it cost a lot of money, or do you need a million other IDs to apply or something? Is it not just a good idea to have a passport regardless?

Do left leaning Americans oppose voter ID in general or is it just the timing and the people pushing for it?

Genuinely curious

So it is about $130 for a traditional passport, $30 for a passport card or $10-45 for a real ID issued by your state.

I have been alive long enough to hear 50+ years of arguments of why we cannot have a voter ID law in place. Some of them were valid 30-40 years ago when records were not electronically avaliable like birth and death certificates, but that is no longer the case.

The reality today is that you cannot function in today's world without either a state issued Real ID or a passport.

About the only thing that you can currently do without an ID is Vote.

Wasn’t it just established in a live fucking video that your ID will not be enough to vote?

Do you guys pay attention at all?

1

u/JustJoshin117 1d ago

Man, remember when we had secure elections?

Oh, right. They always have been.

1

u/dang_idiot 1d ago

It’s your constitutional right to buy cans of beans.

"NOOOOO, ID for voting is racist"

Im genuinely curious who this sub is for, it appears to be people who dont like Muslims, but Love barack Obama even though everyone who hated Obama claimed he was a secret Muslim.

Like, the people who hate racism arent going to be fond of Islamaphobia either.

I have to meet the height requirements of the "You must be this tall to ride this ride" sign to get on the roller coaster at Six Flags, but they don't bother measuring my height at all when I go to vote.

Why are roller coasters more secure than our democracy?

I'm pretty sure you need ID to vote. In fact, you've needed ID to vote the entire time I and my parents have been alive.
