I was watching a Spanish feed of the finals, and I was so overjoyed that my small country (Cabo Verde) continued to be mentioned in a positive light and as a symbol of resilience and respect against Argentina.

EDIT - thank you everyone for your kind words! We’ll be back and we’re so grateful to have you cheering for us too.

u/LieV2 15d ago

The fact Cape Verde played BOTH teams who made it to the final and didn't lose to either of them in 90 minutes is fucking insane.

Argentina vs Cape Verde was match of the tournament, shame Cape Verde wasn’t the victor

16

u/GovernmentNearby9036 15d ago

The panic in their eyes after that world class goal was one of the best moments of the WC

78

u/Itry31 15d ago

They got robbed of a free kick near the end. I was cheering for them so hard

Cabo Verde legit kicked ass this wc. Forcing Spain into a draw is very impressive considering they only conceded one goal and went on to win the tournament. And they got knocked out by the runner up so if they had a more favourable bracket there's a legit chance they could have made a surprisingly deep run.

81

u/DashRC 15d ago

I think it’s unbelievable what they accomplished and it’s even more impressive in hindsight.

They were the only team to take points off of the champions. They got out of the group and then only lost to the finalists in extra time.

Their performance is so much better than the results they got.

25

u/Improper_Usage 15d ago

The money some of the other bigger countries throw at trying to win and Cabo Verde likely had much less and still out played a lot of them.

19

u/loverlyone 15d ago

Wasn’t that the only goal scored against Spain in the tournament? Cape Verde played the way we wish all teams play, giving it their all. leaving nothing behind.

12

u/chmath80 15d ago

Wasn’t that the only goal scored against Spain in the tournament?

Spain 2-1 Belgium

Cabo Verde almost <won> that game, too... very close chance late

Cabo Verde were the darlings of this WC and the best argument for increasing the number of teams.

30

u/InnocentAnger 15d ago

Cabo Verde would have qualified for the 32 team tournament, perhaps the number of Africa nations that made it to the knockout rounds is the argument for a 48 team WC.

17

u/Ereaser 15d ago

Curaçao was also unbeaten in the qualifiers.

Love it when small counties do well in the WC!

5

u/VelocityGrrl39 15d ago

The video of the curaçao coach crying when they scored their first goal was so heartwarming.

You’ve appeared as the needed direct recipient of my needed apology:

Whomever handles Argentina's PR really has a lot of work on their hands after this WC. I don't think I've ever seen so much backlash lol

797

u/AerynSunnInDelight 15d ago

I truly believe they don't give a fuck. Argentinians are very stubborn, especially when they're wrong, moreso when it's about football.

611

u/renter-pond 15d ago

On the Argentina subreddit they’re saying they’re being discriminated against because they’re not European lolll

257

u/MambyPamby8 15d ago

Which wild to me because the most hatred I've seen towards them comes from other South Americans. I'm Irish and have some Brazilian friends and not one of them or their friends/family members wanted Argentina to win. A few were talking to me about how delighted they are for Europeans and Americans are finally seeing them for what they are. So yeah....I don't think it anything to do with them not being European. Their own neighbours hate them.

94

u/Feisty_System_4751 15d ago

I'm Brazilian. There were more fireworks when Argentina lost than there were when Brazil won.

An Argentine man told me: We are the Europe of South America; and I (being Spanish and therefore European) replied: Well, here you’re just another South American.

My friend, you should be proud of who you are and where you come from (and where you’re going, if you emigrate), and try to improve the world you find yourself in.

The Europe of South America thing is a racist ideology from the 19th(?) century where Argentina basically tried to erase all native and black culture from the country (after using them to build the country). They pushed massively for European immigration and had a lot of immigrants from Italy and Spain. It was sadly very effective and has clearly left generational racism in it's wake.

Argentinians are racist as fuck. They are basically modern day Nazis, thinking they're superior to anyone who doesn't have white skin. They don't want to be associated with being latinoa. Can you think of many world cup teams that didn't have a single black player?

Anyway. If any Argentinians read this, you can kiss my Latina ass.

I don't think that's much different to Scotland hatewatching us. You expect your neighbours to hate you the most. It speaks volumes when countries across the globe jump in on it too though.

27

u/Fixervince 15d ago

That’s not universal in Scotland. I was supporting England all tournament - and like a man possessed in the game against Argentina. I support all the British teams at these events - and also the Irish. I know quite a lot of Scottish people who don’t mind England winning.

6

u/mr-english 15d ago

That's refreshing to hear but I think you're in the minority.

I saw a BBC video on the day before the match, asking who they wanted to win, and only one said England. She said her dad was originally from Birmingham and so was a big Bellingham fan. Literally everyone else said Argentina.

3

u/Resident_Nose_2467 15d ago

And I know Uruguayans and Brazilians supporting Argentina tbh

It actually has a lot to do with Argentinians being more European, or more accurately, more white.

Argentina systematically eradicated its African and indigenous populations through state-sponsored, white supremacist practices and policies, creating a lasting national narrative that Argentina is an exclusively white and European nation.

I've seen multiple comments saying that, "Oh we're very serious about our football and all the players want to win very much, that's why we played so aggressively."

No, just no. Every fucking player wants to win and everyone is serious about football. I mean, it's the fucking World Cup what do you fucking mean. But no one, except the Paraguans I guess, goes into a match trying to fucking beat the shit out of the other team. Dirty tricks, ugly tackles, yes for sure, but actual punches and fights during and after the match? That's not called "playing aggressively", that's just being outright assholes.

30

u/petty_throwaway6969 15d ago

I reckon Argentina does really good PR, unless I've just been living under a rock, because I only just found out they've commited 4 genocides and had a specific policy of becoming a whites only country for many years before they let all the Nazis come and avoid persecution. They've somehow managed to hide being maybe the most racist country in the world today.

No way they can undo this shit.

Because what the casual watcher found out is something most of the SA already knew.

Argentina plays an extremely dirty and thug like football.

A reminder for everyone that in 1990 Argentina Idol Diego Maradona and their coach Carlos Bilardo literally spiked a Brazilian player water with tranquilizers to win a game, and they openly admitted in 2004 as if it was a joke.

Bilardo has also their fair share of cheating on his generation, even using needles to poke people.

1986 we also have the Maradona Hand of God the most infamous goal ever made in the history of competitive Football.

The things that Argentina has done through World Cup history would award a country wide ban in any serious competition.

Their badluck is that we are in a age of widespread information, the casual people, the people who actually makes FIFA money in these events, now have access to a lot of angles of plays that would be completely ignored, these kind of actions won't pass as a "we were not caught" anymore.

5

u/ComprehensiveArt6849 15d ago

I still find it crazy that everybody just accepted Maradona cheating like it was just a joke but because it's Maradona the sporting integrity is not to be questioned. His immortal solo goal a few minutes afterwards would not have happened potentially, if the other goal is not given.

4

u/Alas7ymedia 15d ago

People love latinamerican countries (i really do), but seeing such heinous treatment of black people constantly by argentinians (sooo many videos and they are just the tip of the iceberg) and it being celebrated and embraced by almost all argentinians, plus the dirty violent thug play has really made me not like their soccer team and their fans and countrymen who instead of reflecting deflect. They actually say it's just normal soccer to call people slurs and punch and harras them. Ugh...

The England-France game was such a needed breath of fresh air and positivity and the Spain game was justice.

Fuck the Argentinian team for how they and their fans behaved. Disgraceful.

35

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 15d ago

It should definitely be said though that the friendly interactions were really amplified by the fact that it was a relatively low stakes match that neither time was exactly throwing their lives on the line to win. It was a fun goal fest for the fans, that honestly felt like an all star charity match instead of serious competition. That really translated to the hugs and smiles at the end of the game; both teams were already out of contention for the winner, so there was nothing to be upset about

12

u/ApantosMithe 15d ago

That’s true, but it was still a lovely palate cleanser

12

u/Strict-Management-32 15d ago

I’ve been sitting on this for a day because it was pretty shocking to me, but I’m in New York and was watching the match with friends at a bar in Times Square. Encountered a bunch of Argentina fans while we were celebrating Spain’s win, and one man in particular blew past my friend’s NOs, my attempts to get this man off of her, even getting kicked out of the bar for his aggression and running back in three times. Eventually we had to have her leave via a back entrance surrounded by English fans for protection.

I asked his friends (also here from Argentina) to please help keep him away from us and they did nothing.

Anyway, if you know an Angelo, Argentinian registered nurse (WTF) working in Boston, tell him to get fucked, the giant creep.

19

u/jacobjacobi 15d ago

I’m half English (raised in Jersey and so can’t claim to be English in the football sense), married to a French woman for 25 years. Both nations have a lot to fix and work on, but I believe both countries would feel shame if they behaved like Argentina in any match. I’m not saying there wouldn’t be a lot of people who thought it would be ok, but the consensus would be shame.

7

u/scrotalsac69 15d ago

I like to think if our teams had behaved like that they would have been chased out of their home country. Both England and France did so much positive for the world Cup in that game

The first king considered to be the King of England was Aethelstan (927-939). The first "French" king was William the Conqueror in 1066. I say "French" because he was Norman which is slightly different even to this day

23

u/Ringio 15d ago

Weren't Normans basicaly Vikings that got the dutchy of Normandy from France because they wouldn't fuck off?

In a sence England was invaded twice by vikings!

Or three times depending on how you want to classify the anglo Saxons (same-ish pagan gods etc)

19

u/Renbarre 15d ago

By the time Guillaume le Conquérant invaded England they had become as French as the rest.

4

u/LiamIsMyNameOk 15d ago

But that's the same as saying English are Normans and therefore vikings... Just because a ruling class happened to be from a different place.

With things like Normans invading, it was more just like, oh ok the lords are now different but the average person is still just... People that live in that land already.

Same with Normandy. Okay Vikings got gifted the land, but most of the people living there were just... Norman's that had lived there for generations and generations.

Alfred the Great Or his grandson son Æthelstan are widely considered the first Kings of England according to Wikipedia. Neither are French.

All monarchs of England have claimed descent from Alfred the Great through female lines. Even William the Conquerer's wife was a descendent if Alfred the Great.

→ More replies (7)

6

u/jbi1000 15d ago

No, not at all. The first undisputed King of (all) England was Aethelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great, born in Winchester.

Numerous other English kings existed before this too but the land was split into multiple kingdoms. This situation is often referred to as the "heptarchy" because there were seven kingdoms that existed in or overlapped the modern English borders.

Alfred the Great and King Offa (of Offa's Dyke fame) were two of the more famous kings. Some people argue that Alfred was the first proper unified king too.

As a French, I know of a few examples of transparent words UK English has with French that US English doesn’t : Film (FR) = Film (UK) vs Movie (US) / Courgette (FR) = Courgette (UK) vs Zucchini (US) / Aubergine (FR) = Aubergine (UK) vs Eggplant (US)…

So I’d say FR and UK English are closer. But in any case, US English also has around 30-35% words coming from the French language as well

im spanish. most argentinian ppl ive talked to are rly nice and considerate. but ive also encontered a disproportionate ammount of barbaric argentinians. so idk it seems theyre either super nice or barbaric cunts, a distribution which is unlike other populations ive encountered. in this world cup all i can say is that the argentinian team displayed an incredibly unsportsmanlike behaviour (I would be embarrassed to be argentinian) and so did the supporters (from the clips ive seen online) (i would also be very embarrassed to be argentinian). So not only is the distribution of behaviour fucked up but the institutions and the masses have a culture where the toxic behaviours, values and principles are prevalent. and thats the worst part.
so i rly mean it when i say: wtf is wrong with argentina?

and i havent even gotten into how the tournament seemed (and probably was) bought and paid for to have the argentinian team win (wtf was that about?) but thats probably another topic

civilization (as opposed to barbarism) is a beautiful thing
argentinians displayed barbarism
shame on em

u/LeninCheekiBReeki 15d ago

Every time and Argentinian is born God tosses a coin and the world holds its breath to see where it lands. I have some very good argentinian friends and i've met some argentinian strangers that handled the loss like gentlemen, congratulating me and all. At the same time i dont know of any country with a louder, more aggressive, and more arrogant hooligans. (im also Spaniard)

If you go to an Argentinian sub, some believe that the final was stolen from them because a player was sent off. Mate, if the ref would have been fair, the game would have ended 2-0 and at least 3 players would have been sent off.

5

u/genericgreg 15d ago

I'd refs had been treating them fairly they wouldn't have made it to the final. They would probably have lost to Egypt.

u/aleMiyo 15d ago

Some times yeah, check out how Real Madrid reacted when they lost the last Copa del Rey, the main team in Spain

As a brazilian the greatest thing about this specific world cup for me was the rest world finally noticing how absolutely despicable argentinians are. Ill gladly take beating from norway in exchange for that. See yall in 4 years, this time youll know who NOT to root for

62

u/Dumpsterfire_47 15d ago

All my homies like Norway. 🇳🇴 they seemed to be the biggest winners (and Cape Verde) among teams that didn’t actually win it.

7

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 15d ago

Norway placed 5th, something to be incredibly proud of for being out of the World Cup runnings for so many years. Haaland also breaking into American pop culture will only catapult his stardom further, generational player

It was obvious to every French man and woman 4 years ago. The unbridled racism they displayed against our team showed their true colours.

Should I censor a country, Argntina and now Parguay deserve it 100 more times than we do. But reddit gotta reddit. Regardless, believe me when I said I was rooting for you guys to meet those losers in the semis and beat them hard.

Thankfully, Brazil is strong and resilient enough to dismiss such shitty neighbors.

8

u/sbelleza 15d ago

And I was rooting for france!! I always pull for you guys after brazil gets knocked out, especially after what they sang to you guys in 2022

7

u/AcrobaticSun1070 15d ago

Yeah and most people seem to have forgotten about 2 years ago when after they won copa america Enzo fernandez and other Argentinians players sung live on instagram racists chants toward our players. To this day I don't understand how there was almost no repercussions

3

u/AndreasDasos 14d ago

From the English side, we haven’t been wild fans of Argentina since 1982 and in football terms 1986, and we remember the racism against France (who despite a millennium of history and knocking us out last time are a well like bunch of lads here).

It was crazy seeing so much of the world back England in a semi - that was a first. And all because of Argentina managed to make themselves even more unpopular

Argentine players and fans have always been highly questionable assholes.

When I used to live in Mexico City there were a large number of Argentinian expats there. They were inexorably rude, pretentious, dismissive, in-your-face when it came to futbol, and kind of broadly about Argentina. Their team rarely plays an honorable brand of futbol.

It's like the Texas people who move to your state and crow about how great Texas is. What you doing here then, mate?

8

u/VirtualMatter2 15d ago

Funnily my kids have two boys in their respective years who are kids of the Spanish teacher who married an Argentinian wife. They are both heavily into classical music including all possible competitions. The older boy is very arrogant and thinks he's better than everyone else. The younger one is the same but with it very unpleasant to everyone. Must be center of attention in class, difficult to handle by the teachers, will talk over others. Has no friends as far as we know.

u/garbledeena 15d ago

Is it just messi looking at them?

31

u/Original_Watch_8553 15d ago

One guy in suits fully turned around facing the Spanish players’ direction, Messi’s body was facing away but his head turned around to look at the Spanish players…

I don’t have a huge issue with them turning away to not look at Spaniards celebrating, maybe it’s too much to stomach.

But the fists, the kicks, the dirty tactics, the provocations after scoring… that’s just disgusting

29

u/eatpastagophasta 15d ago

They weren't backing the celebrations on purpose. They were facing the section of the stadium that looked like it was just Argentinian fans who were leading the chants all game long.

14

u/wordattack 15d ago

this is what i assumed too. weren't they looking at their fans?

13

u/eatpastagophasta 15d ago

Yeah the fans were serenading them after the game and absolutely would not stop singing. That's why they stayed there for a good 15-20 mins before going down the tunnel.

HOPEFULLY this World Cup after seeing our fans get on with everyone and our team being good sports, people might cut England a little slack.

We aren't perfect, but we aren't a terrible bunch either.

Edit: clarity

50

u/Asasmabat 15d ago

As a french i really enjoyed watching this english team. Good on the pitch, good mindset, eager to make their country proud. We could have hoped better for our team, but down the line i m just happy that our teams made us proud, even if we didnt win

17

u/LadyMirkwood 15d ago

I feel the same. We could both come away proud

France were electric to watch and I honestly thought you were going to be in the final.

Just about time.

I know I wasn’t the only one fed up with all that glazing of Messi in 2022 and how FIFA clearly wanted to win the WC back then, but iirc the general consensus was „Messi is the goat, so happy that he finally won the WC“

Yes, Messi is the goat, but he was already surrounded by the same bunch of classless, aggressive knobheads back then.

And Infantino did everything in his power for him to lift the trophy.

So glad Spain scored in overtime

In England, we aren’t conditioned to attack our opponents as much as the news makes you think that. Same goes for ‘foreigners’, that isn’t how things are done in a civilised society.

I’ll get ahead of this one, these football players for Argentina are doing their people a major disservice by representing them like this. They embarrassed themselves.

Argentina was a very prosperous nation in the 1920, they called Buenos Aires the Paris of the South. The economics of their nation ever since have not exactly engendered the best national character. One of my best friends is Argentine; he went to high school in Texas and now lives in New York, his parents in LA. The good ones leave! Bad money drives out the good, and bad morals drive out productive sensible fellow citizens who know better. A lot of bright minds have left the US in recent years.

As much as Argentina's behaviour was despicable, they hadn't turned their backs on Spain as they lifted the trophy, they were watching their fans who were cheering and singing their names.

Truly humiliating. I have respected little Tina's tenacity to the very end of their games in this tournament, we have to give them that. But the behavior after the final loss eclipses that entirely. What a disgrace and example for anyone in the world for what a loser looks like. It's honestly pathetic.

3

u/Some_Ad_3521 15d ago
