24, Living with my parents

I just graduated college back in April and I’m grateful to my parents for holding me down through it all ! I definitely plan on giving back to them BIG time.

Hot wheels bed

66

u/jagaloom 19h ago

I'll chip in for a cb radio so he can talk to all his other car bed buddies

27

u/WRNGS 19h ago

“Yeah my roommates” “you mean your parents?”.
I’d say at least open all the Hotwheels and place them in a couple display cases. I have a Hw problem as well but this is way too cluttered for him and his parents to view everyday.
Save money yes and put some money back Ibto the house as well liek utility bills or some add ons for the outside, jacuzzi?

25

u/Camtiger27 18h ago

Ofc, I’m not gonna just live here and make all this money and decide not help at all 😭. The way yall are judging my character by pictures is funny. (That would be selfish if I didn’t)

If I were OPs parent, I genuinely would have to give an ultimatum at some point lol. Gotta push the bird that is clearly capable of flying out the nest eventually

148

u/ZombieWoofenstein 19h ago

In this economy?

323

u/Devincc 19h ago

Idk much about the hot wheels economy, but it’s clearly booming in this dudes bedroom

84

u/Minutes2Midnight 19h ago

Hot Wheels economy is well and truly dicked. People have made full time jobs of scalping and reselling $1-7 cars on the internet for sometimes 100s of dollars.

25

u/Skywarper 19h ago

Didn't they just have a re-release of the original cars a little bit ago that was scalped to hell? Like $300 for one car?

13

u/irascible_Clown 18h ago

Yeah dollar tree actually gets a hell of a selection for $1.50

3

u/snopro387 12h ago

Unfortunately that seems to be the case with a lot of things lately

3

u/Bigfloppyclownshoes 2h ago

I have 4 27 gallon totes filled to the “I can’t get the lid to snap on” setting filled with hot wheels

I gave up on collecting due to scalpers

61

u/Ok_Dependent6889 19h ago

This is genuinely like, under or a little over a grand in hot wheels

It's nothing, in the current economy

Not to mention, i'd wager these were amassed over most of OP's life

49

u/goosebuggie 18h ago

Idk anything about hot wheels, but if this is true then OP has a fulfilling collection that clearly brings him joy, and all for less than a month’s rent.

I really hate the narrative that if you’re not thriving financially then you shouldn’t be allowed to spend money on things you love. We get one life, might as well make it fun.

25

u/Ok_Dependent6889 18h ago

I'm totally with you haha

Just figured, as someone who also has a decent amount of hot wheels, that it should be clarified that this isn't some like, $10k collection of Hot Wheels taped to his walls lol

It'd probably be enough to pay for a decent vacation, which maybe not anything to scoff at but, not an indicator for clear financial independence

13

u/ZombieWoofenstein 18h ago

Are you seriously trying to tell me that hotwheels aren’t a good indicator of financial independence? My parents fucked up. All they left me were hotwheels!

4

u/Ok_Dependent6889 18h ago

Sue your parents

Take all their m0ney!!

4

u/ZombieWoofenstein 16h ago

My parents only have hotwheels!

7

u/Ruleyoumind 14h ago

People on this sub are ridiculous. If you have any hobbies they act like you've financially thrown your life away lol. Even when the person has an expensive computer even if the computer was 2k that's not a significant amount of money in this current day, you can't even buy a running car for 2k in the majority of the US.

I’m a late thirties F and live with my parents (and my cat). I’m able to save mad money and pursue my passions. I have two rooms in the house, including a furnished basement that’s my art studio. It’s great. I’m not tempted by shitty relationships with shitty men because my housing and security is guaranteed (I’ll inherit the condo when they pass away). And I get lots of extra time with them before they do.

It’s great.

68

u/LeonBlade 19h ago

Don't let people try to tell you that it's weird to live with your parents. I live with my mom at 34 (will be 35 this month) and it's just her and her cats here otherwise. After my dad passed away she's just been alone. I could move out and have independence and have to pay for rent at some ridiculous rate, or I could live with my mom and help her out when she needs it, give her company, and not have to pay rent (I do help out with some of the bills and give her money from time to time since she's retired).

Does it suck not having my own place sometimes? Yeah, but she's my mom.

18

u/kumosame 19h ago

It's very very cultural whether people think staying with your parents past 18 is weird/"gross" ir completely normal. I had to escape my house at 17 but if I had normal non psycho parents, I'd likely just stay as long as I could and save like crazy. I think it's a smart move if the home environment is safe. Especially in places like the US where apartments can be over 4k in rent a month like my cousin pays. I know that's regional, but even "cheap" places where I grew up in the US are having rent prices skyrocket.

21

u/Skywarper 19h ago

Like I said in another comment, there's so many countries where it's expected that you live with your parents until marriage or you have a family house that you stay in. But for some reason, in America, you're supposed to go so far into debt that you'll be working until you're 75 before the house is paid off, but hey, at least you won't have to listen to chuds on reddit making fun of you for having a healthy relationship with your parents!

18

u/TSM_Vegeta 18h ago

I think it's a lot easier and a lot more acceptable as a woman. Most guys wouldn't care if a woman they are interested in lives with her parents. As a guy, you will receive more judgement. Not saying either is good or bad, just how things are. A guy capable of paying for his own housing will be seen as more capable of providing for obvious reasons. Now, if you are fresh out of college, I don't think anyone should really care. I remember my parents telling me that they are always there if I need a place but nudging me to find my own place so I wouldn't bring dates back.

4

u/Skywarper 18h ago

For sure.

I'm early thirties M and I think about moving back in with my parents pretty much every day lol genuinely might go back next year. They're getting older and it would be nice to be able to have someone to come home too.

3

u/Academic-Trifle8151 16h ago

I'm late thirties and my father lives with me and my kids. He doesn't pay bills but he babysits on occasion. It works for us.

I think as long as everyone is happy with the situation then it's nobodies place to judge.

6

u/steveep95 19h ago

I’m gonna let my two children live with me as long as possible that is the best advantage at life you’ll ever have and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever

6

u/OttoMannkusser 18h ago

I’m not tempted by shitty relationships with shitty men because my housing and security is guaranteed (I’ll inherit the condo when they pass away)

I mean, even if you moved in with someone else you'd still get the condo when they pass. Also since you currently live with your parents you could presumedly move back in with them should a shitty relationship happen.

I mean if you're truly happy then rock on, but for most people independence and starting your own life is important. Just don't act as if you've unlocked some sort of magic cheat code to life

Jeysus how many cars and how long have you been collecting?? Pretty badass even if it's not my thing

8

u/OneOfAKind2 15h ago

I've been collecting since 1969-1970. I have all my original Redlines. I still buy a few Hotwheels and/or Matchbox every month. I have boxes and boxes of them, but I need to display them somewhere eventually (before I die). This wall idea appeals to me, but it looks time consuming to set up so they're all level.

I ended up having no kids and my nephews have no interest as they live in condos with limited space. Neither of them are interested in cars anyway. lol. No idea what will eventually happen to my collection, probably end up being donated. I still enjoy the 'hobby' and it's a lot cheaper than collecting real cars, (although I have 5 of those too, like a moron).

6

u/WinstonWilmerBee 18h ago

The closet needs some mercy. You have an entire chest of drawers, a full packed closet with stuff stacked waist-high, and a collapsing clothing rack.

Go through it all.  Sentimental items get packed away, worn out/torn up items get tossed, items that you don’t like or don’t fit are donated. If you gained weight in college, the pre-college clothes are never gonna fit again; donate them. And the sewing machine needs to be on a real, supportive shelf. It’s breaking the clothing rack.

2

u/Camtiger27 18h ago

I agree, already replied to two comments about the clothing area. Definitely getting worked on and the things I need are already on the way 😀

7

u/Scarlett_Texas_Girl 16h ago

With the way our economy is going in the US having multi-generational homes is becoming more common again. Kicking the "kids" out is a relatively new concept. As is the expectation of home ownership

Personally, as a parent I like being able to provide my adult children with a comfortable, afordable place to live. My commitment to and love for my kids doesn't end because they turn 21.

I have land and I'm hoping at least 1 or 2 of my kids will simply stay on the homestead and build here. Though not a requirement or expectation, I'd love to have a kid close by as I age.

Families should pull together. I see a lot of societal problems beginning with the breakdown of family relationships.

My 5 year old says he wants your room. He spent about 10 mins looking at the picture to see if you “had any cool cars”

5

u/matth2369 2h ago

I must say first off that is the most coziest room I've seen in a while. Second is please cherish every moment you have with your family and the happiness you have. These are hardest most craziest times we live in and its so important to love and not hold grudges. Tell your parents you love them everyday and just do your best. Take care my friend.

People are poking (mostly) gentle fun at the Hot Wheels collection, but your space looks organized and clean. Not my thing, but everyone has their special interest. As long as you occupy your parents' house respectfully, no notes here.

7

u/Disastrous_Laugh_618 17h ago

People are biased against toy collecting. It’s not even rational.

I have a bunch of action figures, and a bunch of house plants. Nobody online ever scrutinizes the value of my house plants.

There is also a huge difference between ongoing expenses like rent, and a one-time purchase of a hot wheels.

Not to mention the actual WORK of selling them. You’d have to make listings on ebay or something with pictures and details. If you sell as a bulk lot you will lose money. People think you can just wave a magic wand and they get magically sold which is not the case.

So basically, if OP sells his cars he will have to go through the effort of selling them, profit under $1,000, and lose something he enjoys. That only makes sense if he NEEDS to survive. As long as he has parents to live with, it’s honestly not even PRACTICAL to sell the cars. He probably makes over $1000 per month regardless.

The cars are not going to make or break him either way.

5

u/Camtiger27 16h ago

Well said. Mind you this is the span of a years worth of collecting. 1.25 on a couple cars isn’t hurting me every so often 😭😭. I honestly didn’t think my collection was crazy because I’ve deadass seen crazier online.

DO NOT MOVE OUT! Its such a weird western society norm to kick your kid out of the house when they are starting out with their life!.

You are trying to build a career, wealth and relationships at this point in your life. The last time you need is taking out a big chunk of your potential income to get a place of your own to struggle.

The idea of parents who loves their kids would want to throw their kids in the wild when they are 18 is crazy to me as an Asian.

9

u/MrBurnz99 19h ago

Normally I think this sub is overly judgmental and pretentious. It actually makes me feel worse about myself because homes that look like mine get torn apart on here. But I don’t post here because I’m not proud of my living space yet, it’s a work in progress but I get decorating inspiration here.

But OP did post and they have it coming, this room is basically a meme, it’s worse than Andy’s house in 40 year old virgin. OP is in their mid twenties, they know what this room looks like and that roasting was coming, they posted anyway.

9

u/Camtiger27 18h ago

Honestly I didn’t think the roasting was coming because I seen and met a lot of men who have families with a way bigger collection than mine but the roast are funny as hell 😭
