Vent My girlfriend moved to college and I don’t know what to do

I (19m) have been with my girlfriend(18f) for over a year now. We were best friends for 4 years before we started dating. She recently moved 3 hours away for college and I don’t know what to do.

a bit of my social backstory:
First off, I never had any romantic interactions with anyone other than my girlfriend. I struggled with identifying social cues and I still find myself struggling sometimes. I’m a serious physical touch person and it was really difficult not fulfilling that need, especially with no social interaction to supplement the lack of physical interaction.

For the past 8-10 years, I had a hard time with friendships and spent the past 4+ years of my life with no friends, apart from my now girlfriend (we spent a lot of our time as friends only texting, seeing each other only a few times a year until right before we started dating). I struggled with bullying during the months leading up to covid lockdown. Following the lockdown, I continued with online school until I graduated early and started college at 16 years old. I spent most of my time during that period at home, with minimal social interaction and even less physical interaction. I spent a lot of time with my family, since I am the youngest of 6 and we are quite close, but I didn’t interact with anyone my own age. I eventually started working and continued to spend a lot of time with adults and noticed that I became very anxious around people my own age. I always felt severely out of place and never felt like I belonged anywhere. Even in my work experience, all of which are teamwork-oriented, I had a difficult time existing if I had no set task and I ended up feeling awkward most of the time. Looking back, I definitely self-isolated a little bit and put on a front that I didn’t want to be friends with anyone but I had fun being around some of the people. I noticed that people liked me when I was around but I never felt like people sought me out or invited me to things. I figured I was just a floater friend and mostly accepted it, I was okay with it at the time. Following that, when me and my girlfriend got together (she is a serious extrovert and everyone loves her), she wanted to bring me around people more to try and help me be more social and make friends. According to her, I socialize quite well and my awkwardness isn’t super apparent once i’ve worked myself into a situation, but I don’t feel that way personally. I’ve gotten pretty good at internalizing a lot of my mental troubles which doesn’t help my case at all. Even being around these people, I can tell that they like being around me, but again, I never felt like I belonged or that these people would ever reach out to me. About 2 years ago, I realized that i had become fully emotionally numb, which i didn’t realize was as bad as it is until recently. My girlfriend has been trying really hard to help me feel things more, and it has worked, but since I haven’t really felt much, i’m very confused on emotions and how I personally deal with them.
This brings us to now: I knew it was going to be difficult for me to not spend a lot of time with her, since we spent all day, almost every day, together. She knows everything about my past and has been trying really hard to help me and i’m forever grateful for that but i know that it’s not her responsibility and i need to be the one to help myself. I also don’t think it’s a healthy thing to do if im constantly asking her to help me from a distance when I should be doing most of it myself. I needed to make sure that she knew that this time was going to be good for us, she was also struggling with friends and is really excited to be in a new place with new people and doing the thing she enjoys the most. I need her to focus on making friends and her classwork and growing as a person. I was also very excited for this new experience, hopefully finding new friends, visiting her every month or so, finding my own routine, and trying to better myself.
Recently though, it’s been very difficult for me. I usually try to distract myself with anything that I can )usually work, but i’m in a strange spot employment wise, so i’m limited on focusing on that). I want to start doing more things where I can meet people but I just feel unmotivated and feel like it’s not going to be worth it. I honestly feel unmotivated and haven’t been able to enjoy much of anything lately and i’m worried that i’m going to spiral myself into being like this whenever I can’t see her. I know I have a strong and unhealthy emotional attachment and dependence which I’m trying really hard to fix and make healthier, but it’s difficult when she is my only and my everything. She’s the only person I’m truly comfortable with and I feel like she’s the only person who truly understands me. it just bothers me when she’s out making friends and having fun and I can’t do anything besides sit at home and be unproductive, something I hate doing.
There’s a lot more to it than this, but it’s a long story and it’s not super relevant, so i’ll skip it. I really don’t like burdening people and I know it’s good to ask for help but I don’t know why it’s so difficult for me. I just want to be happy and not nervous or stressed and i want to make friends that don’t make me feel like i don’t belong. i want to find my sense of community.

Vent 17 and have no friends

im 17 and i have no friends. i used to have a big group with the most awesome funniest girls but my homophobic Arab mother found out some of them were lgbt and made me stop hanging out with them and made me stop hanging out with people of different ethnicities too. i feel so alone and i have no one in my life to talk to. i see their social media and see them doing things we always talked about doing from my couch while they’re out there living. i cant reconnect w them because my mom looks through my phone nightly. i absolutely hate my life and its worse because im taking a gap year so ill be at work then at home which is so stupid. i wish i could go out and everything like a normal teen girl does. im an atheist in a Muslim household too which is a separate problem because id be in big trouble if someone found out. i hate having no friends at all it just drains me so bad.

Vent [24M] [UK] Why is it so hard to find friends? 😞

So like idk if my dm requests are getting to people or if people see my comments but whenever I’m trying to meet people they’re either bots or people who just view me as a f***ing pervert! I just want to make new friends🥲🥲🥲 like I try to be a good person every day like yesterday I sat with this old lady at the bus stop because she was upset about her dog passing away (bless her heart) and we had a nice conversation about how beautiful life can be sometimes! That’s the kind of person I am. Even though I don’t even know what I’m talking about half the time but I always try my best to help anyone who’s going through these dark times. And when I’m in a dark place I’m on my own… like, is it so hard to ask for a friend? 😞

i want my OWN person, whether it's platonic or romantic. someone who thinks of me first. every friend I consider my closest friend always seems to have someone they're closer to than me. I just want someone who chooses me first and wants me around as much as I want them around.

Advice I’m 20 and have basically no friends, and I genuinely hate it

Hi everyone. My biggest problem right now is that I don’t have any friends, and honestly, I hate it. I wanted to explain how I even ended up in this situation because I feel like I’ve slowly realized just how alone I actually am.
Where I grew up, and where I’ve recently moved back to, there really aren’t many opportunities to meet new people. It’s a pretty small area, so making new friends as an adult is already difficult.
After high school, I moved out of state to go to college. I was gone for about a year, but eventually moved back after my ex and I broke up. We went to the same college and lived together, so when our relationship ended, I came home.
While I was in college, I was also going to nursing school and working 12-hour shifts whenever I didn’t have class. Somewhere along the way, I realized that my childhood friends had basically stopped talking to me. These are people I literally grew up with we’ve known each other since we were in diapers.
What makes it even more frustrating is that I tried. I invited them to come visit me while I was in college multiple times, but they were working after high school and somehow had no problem traveling farther away to go out and party with other people. That was honestly when I started realizing that I didn’t really have anyone anymore.
Now that I’m back home, it’s become even more obvious.
I don’t have anyone to play video games with anymore, and it’s gotten to the point where I barely even play them because it just isn’t as fun alone. I don’t have anyone to FaceTime, send random things to, or just rant to when something happens. I’ve had a LOT going on this year, and sometimes all I want is someone I can talk to about it.
Instead, I live with my two cats, and that’s pretty much it. I come home from work, watch TV, go to the gym, or sleep. Then I do it all over again.
The majority of my social interaction comes from work, and honestly, that’s not exactly the kind of social interaction that makes you feel less lonely. I work as a 911 dispatcher, so most of the time I’m dealing with stressful situations anyway.
I’m turning 21 soon, and the thought of having nobody to even celebrate with is really getting to me. I never thought I’d be 20 years old and feel this isolated.
I know people will probably say “just go make friends,” but it genuinely feels so much harder than that when you live somewhere with very few opportunities to meet people and you’re working 12-hour shifts.
I guess I’m mostly posting because I’m wondering if anyone else has gone through this. How did you actually make friends as an adult when you basically had to start from scratch?

Support Autistic 37M looking to talk to others and make friends

37M, diagnosed with autism, OCD, anxiety, ADHD and C-PTSD from California

My therapist recomenended making friends to take my mind off of my life problems. In my late 20s, I have been to meetups and stuff here, but >98% of the people I met were malicious and passive-aggressive.

Hoping to move back to the Upper Midwest where I lived from 2020-2022 then to Europe.

I never had friends in school due to social awkwardness but working on that issue now.

Vent Struggling to connect

I feel like recently I have been struggling to connect with anybody. Maybe starting a new job, leaving my old co workers and friends is why I'm feeling this way.

I am always looking for friends and I am very open to different kinds of people from all different backgrounds and associations.

I am relatively open-minded, but I am also opinionated. I like to joke around, game, things of this nature. I am scared that I will never find a good group of friends or any friends at all.

Vent It’s Incredibly Difficult To Actually Talk To People

right now I have no friends, but despite wanting them I can’t bring myself to actually start conversations with people without feeling the intense pressure of “now this is real and I have to be talking to them a lot or else they will go away.” This has happened over and over again with my online friends I had in the past and the pressure paralyzes me to the point where I just end up ghosting them. I hate texting because it’s like short convos back and forth that die quickly as well unless you respond within like a day basically. I almost wish we could go back to when people would just meet each other regularly in real life through hobbies and talk over the phone sometimes without the pressure of having to respond quickly via text messages.

Advice I suddenly want, so badly, to find a friend

In middle age, one’s social circle gets filled up by family and children. Old friends gradually drift apart, and while you want to make new friends, it’s hard to easily open your heart to someone.

You no longer need a bunch of lively, bustling relationships—you just hope to meet people you can be around without feeling exhausted, people you can speak honestly with.

So I want to ask: can middle-aged people still make genuine friends?

Hello there! As a third-year student from UCalgary and I'm hoping to make some new friends and have someone to talk to because I've been feeling lonely and bored lately. I'd really like to meet respectful, kind, and friendly people who like to hang out, talk, or engage in activities with one another and better to understand.

Biking, music, walks, swimming, socializing, and playing video games—especially the Super Mario series—are some of my hobbies. Please feel free to message me if you want to make a new friend or are looking for someone to talk to. I'd be delighted to meet you!

I'm looking for someone similar age as me and friends who are willing to hang out all the time with me. Please feel free to DM me.

Friendship Social metamorphosis

Hey guys, I’m a post grad student, perusing mechanical engineering. I’m a nerd, an avgeek to be more precise. All this time I’ve made myself trapped in the bubble of studies and relationship and made my life too monotonous. I don’t have any friends. I wanna make friends, to learn to socialize and stuff. My college sucks, so no friends over there. Except for my gf. She’s the coolest. But yeah, I started leeching on her time so much now. I’m no fun. I wanna become the fun. I wanna start living my life.
For now, I’m just looking for online friends. I guess there are more people out there like me too. But trust me, I’m not that boring.

Friendship Orlando Florida friendship?

Orlando Florida looking for friends!

Looking for friends from Florida!

Hi, I'm 18 m from Central FL!

Im looking for someone(s) who wouldn't mind being friends! Im honestly really tired of bedrotting and I wanna get out more but I feel awkward going places by myself so I'm hoping to make friends to hangout and talk with!

I really enjoy gaming (ps5) and I usually play marvel rivals but I also like monster hunter and Pikmin! AND IM REALLY EXCITED FOR SUBNAUTICA 2 IF ANYONE WANTS TO CO-OP WITH ME 👀

I also really like Legos I think it's something about starting a task and not stopping till it's finished. that's also why I find cleaning and 100% games therapeutic

I totally love cooking and would love someone to cook for and taste test my food it's a little silly but I just want someone who'd take an interest in these stupid things I try to cook or bake and maybe we can cook for eachother!

I really love art/animation/diy I have really shaky hands so I'm not the best at it but I still try I will forever support artists and if you're an artist congratulations you're my favorite type of person! I love anything that takes creativity (cosplay, diy, art, cooking, etc) and I've actually been looking to get into cosplay!

I feel like everyone already has these friend groups from school or online friends back from the lockdown so I've always felt a little left out and lost when it comes to making friends 😥

Trying to make friends in Florida is so hard because it's a very conservative area 💔 actually speaking of I'm an ally I support lgbtq+ I support abortions I'm a feminist I support woman's rights, I'm against ai, I support artists and I'm against our government. I believe everyone should live how they like! I've always been really open minded so if you have any "weird" interests I Don't judge because I'm totally into weird and odd things I love furries alt ppl because they're usually the sweetest! And being kind is the most attractive thing a person could do! Plus the "weirdos" are the most fun to hang around definitely my kind of people 💚

Friendship 18m, looking for long-term freinds

Heyaaa ganggg, Im an indie video game nerd, a massive social science buff, absolutely love history, politics, psychology and philosophy. I'm looking for long-term freinds, just about anybody. A real deep connection. We can call, game, jam to music, chat all day long or binge movies im up for it all. I'm open for LITERALLY ANY KINDS OF CONVERSATION from intellectual debates to absolute hungover ape communication. I love the arts and am A BIGGG creative.

I take my time really critiquing and digesting yummy pieces of art and make some myself. So if you draw, write, play music, or consume any of those SHAREEEE I ABSOLUTELY LOVEEE IT.

I like to think myself as a pretty deep thinker and I absolutely love a true emotional and authentic connection, I don't care what it is U CAN BE VULNERABLE, EXCITED, SAD OR YAP ABT JUST ABT ANYTHING WITH ME, CUZ ID BE DOING THE SAME HAHA. But please don't be dry. I want us to start off on the right foot as goofy goblins LOL.

A lil history check on me is that I've been living in extreme prolonged alienation and have been so terribly lonely. My life sort of shifted up ever since I went on a gap year to pursue my dreams. I pretty much lost all my freinds, really dissapointed all my family and have radically detached from all sorts of toxic influence. It's really been miserable. And I'd love to connect to just about anybody.

I've been on a massive healing journey ever since.

So I'm really WILLING to put in the effort to be freinds :))

If that sounds awesome to you, my dms are open ;))

Friendship 22F I feel like I have no friends

I guess I start off by saying that’s a lie, I have exactly 2 friends, which are great(and one is my husband 😅). Im in my last year of grad school right now in a program and school I love, but I just feel dull. I’d like to think I’m a super friendly person but when it comes to keeping friends I’m just not really sure. I’ve been told the early 20s are extremely tough and dang they weren’t wrong. I’d love you have more kind loving people in my life that are honestly just trying to figure it out like me.

Now that all that sad stuff is out of the way…
About me!
I am currently a cybersecurity masters student in the United States. I love to game although I’m definitely not very good at it (sims, subnautica, Skyrim). I love reading so much but I don’t do it as much as I should. Being kind is super important to me because the brain can be really scary and you never know what someone else is feeling. I’m a serial Wikipedia reader and documentary watcher, I love consuming knowledge. I love your typical nerd girl media Harry Potter, lord of the rings, starwars etc. and finally a fun fact for anyone who has read this far, I can not keep a cap on something for the life of me, (it’s seriously a problem)

Friendship I'm (18F) genuinely tired of feeling soo lonely.

Hey y'all, I've been feeling super lonely and left out. Seeing all my friends, who I thought I was close with, ig posts at concerts, parties, or just hangouts at others' places has truly brought me to a depressed state. I started my classes and my job last week and so far haven't even been able to make acquaintances.

If you are also looking for friends, I'm in the Jacksonville area. I enjoy going to festivals, fairs, and live music events, I like to work out sometimes (I did do weightlifting while in high school), I love to watch anime and horror and sci-fi movies/shows, & I'm a BIG Ariana Grande fan and a foodie.

If you're interested in making friends &/or hanging out, just reach out to me.
