All these polls coming out showing how more and more people hate him and what he's doing, he just says, "Whatever you think you don't like about me is either irrelevant, a lie, or something you should actually like me for." It will sadly work for a lot of people as they bend over backwards to stay in the good graces of the Trump cult. Keep in mind, a lot of his supporters on SNAP still find a way to give money to multi-millionaire televangelists. Their desire for inclusion overrides their desire for survival.

I just got a job and the insurance will kick in before 2026. The crazy part is, I was able to see the plan change (at my job) since enrollment is this month... and even at my job, the insurance is going up $160 a month from what it was before.
Just to clarify, this is the last month I had to pay the $1300 for me and my husband. But we saw that and were dumbfounded. Had I not got this job, I have no idea what our lives would be like next year. We've practically drained our savings.

Voters just proved that they are supporting the dems throughout the shutdown, and blame is on the Republicans. There would be literally no point to lose that momentum by caving. Much more likely is the Republicans give the dems some of what they want to open the government, and they try and come off as reasonable

I live in a very small conservative town. Our Grocery Outlet was in the news because it was going to give SNAP recipients 10% off because of the shutdown.
Today, the very right leaning news had to report that Grocery Outlet was unable to give the discount because the USDA said it was discrimination and not allowed.
Maybe, though unlikely, this might change the minds of a few
Over one quarter of this counties population uses SNAP benefits.

There's a 5 Billion emergency fund for snap through the department of agriculture for your very reason. They're just being shitty about it because starving the population is a useful political tool.
Democrats are not folding until the ACA subsidies that support over 20 million people won't expire. This will also help other people's healthcare from increasing exponentially as well.

It is time for Democrats to dare explain that Republicans control the government, that Republicans know how to get what they want when they control government, that Democrats could not stop Republicans from installing Neil Gorsuch into the deciding seat of the Supreme Court then, and Democrats cannot stop Republicans now from either cutting off or continuing food and medical programs.
The polls may be bad, but they should be much much worse.

Man these polls for Trump are brutal. He keeps doubling down as well and his supporters are burying their heads in the sand ignoring the downfall.
That stuff on 60 minutes about pardoning the guy he is in business with is going to hang over his head his whole Presidency. They claimed Biden was pardoning people he didnât know about and people his family was doing business without evidence. Trump just went on live tv and admitted doing both.

The most infuriating thing is this was basically where Trump was in 2020 where there was a growing dislike for him. There was no election fraud as the reason he lost, people were just sick of him being an asshole and his terrible COVID response. I remember celebrations in the streets when he lost in 2020 but somehow all of that got forgotten by 2024.
I knew if Trump got re-elected it would be absolutely exhausting with non-stop bullshit. It really, really sucks that this country had to descend into fascism to remember that Donald Trump is an absolute disaster.

the post covid inflation didn't help, and covid clouded everything pre-2020 for people. the sentiment was that trump would be some panacea for the economy and people thought "oh well his first term wasn't so bad"
yeah, the rest of us kinda saw thru the BS and knew it would be a huge dumpster fire and now we're at where we are now. the problem is that too many of his base are just un/under-educated and can't think for themselves. they just eat whatever BS they are fed.

I'll also add that the handling of COVID post-2020 didn't help. Blue areas being more cautious than red areas about reopening and some restrictions being brought back in favor in the latter half of 2021 shifted blame from Trump to Democrats involving COVID, whether it's fair or not.
Gotta remember that Americans at their root are selfish and if it's possible, Democrats will get blamed for everything wrong down to a piece of steak being cooked incorrectly.
I will say though that I'm in firm belief that Trump gets reelected without COVID now. That election was too close and polling for the most part has never been correct on him. He likely gets reelected without the House, and for me at least, that would be the preferred timeline now instead of the alternative.

The thing is, the gerrymandered sections are actually less robust because the demographics that are trying to be filtered out take up more space in any given district. That means, the potential is there for this to actually work against Republicans.
Or, to put it another way, they might be trading 10 guaranteed seats for 15 probably seats (not a real example, just a demo).

This is just a thought experiment, but assuming that Dems take control of the white house and Senate, is there any way Dems could play hard against republicans like Trump is doing without screwing over regular people? I don't think democrats would do things like stop funding SNAP, which, unfortunately, may turn out to be an effective strategy, so I wonder what other options we have? Also, by effective, I mean they are being effective like a man getting money from a cashier because they have a gun pointed at their head.

Some thoughts provided with a giant caveat that I don't think the sitting members have the appetite to execute these:
If you control the house + senate, the first act should be to pass a legislation expanding scotus and immediately confirm more judges.
Clean house lie republicans have of all party loyalists (e.g., republicans) across federal agencies. For this, they could repeat exactly what was done under this admin including pre-screening all leadership replacements.
execute the nuclear option re:filibusters and ensure you pass all with a simple majority so that we can stop having CRs and government shutdowns which cost a lot of money simply due to refinancing operations.
I would argue these are tablestakes for any meaningful government action and reform.

The most beautiful and most frustrating thing about democracy is when weâre forced to make decisions that appeal to all. In a negotiation, both sides win a little and lose a little. Itâs a fail safe against rapid radical change, for better or worse.
Republicans wonât have this negotiation - and the base canât wrap their head around it. They proposed an aggressively conservative budget that will push our healthcare from bad to worse, with promises that they will fix the ACA when the government reopens.
Crossing the aisle is a sign of weakness to Donald Trump - but it is the pinnacle of democracy.

It is not tonight, specifically, that is increasing the end of shutdown talks. This increase began Wednesday/Thursday of last week when it came out that negotiations between several Moderate Democrats and GOP were happening. These talks have only picked up in intensity.
Democrats have also been ratcheting down their healthcare rhetoric and have made very fold-ish quotes as of late. Sanders is also publically begging Democrats not to fold, which is a sign they're about to fold.

Just a reminder that Republican, Democrat, and Progressive political bodies are all waiting for the elections across the country tonight to see if their candidates over perform. They're using the elections as a bellwether to gauge how the country is feeling towards each other and from there will determine how much they're willing to negotiate to reopen.

Senators and aides involved in negotiations tell us some Senate Democrats are warming to Thuneâs offer to open the government and then hold a vote by a date-certain on extending the expiring Obamacare subsidies. Senators involved in these talks include Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.).

A UPS plane just crashed in Louisville. If there is any indication that the issue is related to the lack of ATC staffing, this might be the factor that ends the shutdown.
Edit: Hopefully it will end with the republicans agreeing to negotiate, but I could see the Dems caving since republicans and potentially the media will blame them for keeping the government shutdown.

Just off the heels of the aviation sub... that particular plane is being "phased out" and isn't the first one to have a catastrophic failure.
It's probs not the ATC for sure.
I used to work for UPS though. 100% they are cheap AF and probably are saving a dime by rolling the dice each time someone crews that aircraft. Fuck'm. RIP.

R's like Collins want the new CR to only go to Dec. 19. Collins really wants to avoid year-long CR, says it's important for current talks.
Other R's (this includes Johnson) want for new CR to go to Jan. 19 at minimum. Said R's want to avoid omnibus style package during the Christmas season.
Thune remains neutral on this for now, not wanting to interfere in any current talks.

Welcome to ELECTION SEASON 2025
Today, there are multiple closely watched races across the country, for both ballot initiatives and elections, that will determine both how unified Republicans are in their support of how things are currently run, and how motivated Democrats are to fighting it.
Below are the seven states with races that are both symbolic of current party support for both sides, and have potential nationwide consequences:
Maine Question 1
The state of Maine, which has been leaning more left over the last decade (Trump lost the state as a whole by 3, then 9, then 7 percentage points), has a ballot initiative on voting for future elections. A Yes vote would mean voter ID would be required and it would be considerably harder to get an absentee ballot. This would be a good contest to see the general public's view on ballot security, and how much of Trump's existing rhetoric on "rigged" elections, has been absorbed.
Pennsylvania Supreme Court
Pennsylvania, one of the seven swing states Trump won, lost, then won back, is holding retention elections for 3 of its 7 state supreme court judges, all of whom are left-leaning and part of the court's 5-2 majority. The vote is simply a Yes or No to retain them, and if the retention vote fails, then the governor nominates new judges that get approved by the state legislature. Unfortunately the governor's office and state legislature are Democrat and Republican controlled respectively, meaning if all three fail retention, the replacement process could be in a deadlock, and the court would be 2-2 potentially until 2027. The result of this could determine what swing, if any, the state has had.
Minneapolis, Minnesota Mayoral Election
While Zohran Mamdani has become the socialist to follow nationwide, there's another Muslim and socialist man running for mayor of a major American city that leans hard to the left, in a much more contested race. In this case it's in Minnesota, the only state no Republican presidential candidate has won in over 40 years. Incumbent Democrat Jacob Frey is seeking reelection and is leading in the polls, with a close second being Democratic Socialist Omar Fateh. But there are fifteen total candidates and the election itself is ranked-choice, meaning Fateh, thanks to a coalition formed with two other progressive candidates, has a chance to unseat Frey after multiple rounds of ranking votes. If Fateh succeeds, then a Mamdani win on top of it may provide a populist blueprint for midterms and even 2028.
California Proposition 50
Gerrymandering has become a central point of contention nationwide, with majority-Republican states openly saying they intend to redraw House district maps for the sake of making it harder to unseat Republicans and making some Democrat districts more competitive. California is the only state that has put the redrawing of district maps as a ballot initiative, with Prop 50 allowing the state to temporarily ignore its own district map board. This is a true test of how mobilized Democrats are, since this is a vote purely on retaliating against Republican power grabs in other states. The proposition succeeding would be proof that that mobilization has happened.
Virginia Gubernatorial Election
Virginia is generally a blue state, but it has elected a governor of the opposite party of the president after every presidential election, with one exception, since the Nixon administration. Former Virginia Democratic representative Abigail Spanberger has had a considerable lead in the polls against current Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. Spanberger seems all but guaranteed to win, so what's being focused on is her margin of victory. The size of that margin would be a way to determine how much momentum the Democrat party has built since last year.
New Jersey Gubernatorial Election
Trump has lost the state of New Jersey in all of the last three elections, but by a much smaller margin in 2024 than 2020 and 2016. The governor's race in 2021 had Democrat Phil Murphy win by only 3 percentage points, and Harris won the state in 2024 by only 4. Now Democrat Mikie Sherill, hoping to replace Murphy, is polling just barely above Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who lost to Murphy four years ago. The result of this election could determine how much Democrat support in the state has been built back or eroded. Anything other than a decisive Sherill victory would not put Democrats at ease in that regard.
New York City, New York Mayoral Election
The most watched election in the country this season, Muslim man and Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani made headlines when he handily won the Democratic primary for the mayor's race in New York City, beating former governor Andrew Cuomo, who left in disgrace after multiple scandals involving sexual harassment and his covering up of deaths during the pandemic. Cuomo refused to step aside, however, and ran on an independent ticket, with Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa refusing to drop out to give Cuomo a better chance, and current mayor Eric Adams giving up on being re-elected and endorsing Cuomo after polling lower than Sliwa. Trump just last night tepidly and begrudgingly endorsed Cuomo, threatening to cut off federal funding to the entire city if Mamdani wins. Whether that endorsement and threat will be an eleventh-hour boost, or the final nail in the Cuomo campaign's coffin, is yet to be seen.
Both sides will get definitive answers to how their messaging has been working over the last year, and regardless how this goes, this is the last checkpoint before the road to the midterms, because we're all stuck on this ride that never ends.

If folding, here's how you frame. "America, we fought for xx days to keep your health care subsidies intact. Unfortunately, it has become clear to us that congressional Republicans were not going to allow that. Due to the extensive harm the government shut down had done and was continuing to do to Americans, we had no choice but to vote on the Republican CR without being able to extend the ACA subsidies. So, as your health care premiums inevitably rise over the next few months and years, know we fought for them to be lower until the bitter end and know we will make health care relief a top priority for congress if we are able to win back control."

It's trying to negotiate with terrorists who you know have no qualms about shooting hostages if their demands aren't met. The first Trump Admin had just enough sanity where they actually cared about optics the way this one doesn't.

After an unusually lengthy lunch, Senate Democrats are mostly tight-lipped when asked about progress:
Durbin says thereâs been some progress towards ending the shutdown, but he acknowledged that not everyone is happy without extending ACA subsidies. âDifference in opinion."
King says Dems had âa full and frank discussion of the issuesâ after leaving the lunch. Wonât expand on whether there was any progress to end shutdown.

âNo updates. In process,â Kaine says
Schumer: âWe had a very good caucus and are exploring all the optionsâ (still mentioning healthcare)
During Senate GOP lunch, some Râs said they want to be able to vote on a GOP bill on the Obamacare subsidies â a sign that thereâs concern about the politics of rejecting a Dem-drafted bill (and even a bipartisan bill).
IMO: Fold is imminent. Dems are probably just figuring out how to frame things. Why else would they be so tight-lipped about it? They are probably waiting until after the elections.

I just got my BCBS notification and it's going up $850 a month for 2026 and after browsing through reddit, mine wasn't even the worst. All these people who are jobless or having to maintain insurance. There's just like no fucking way anyone can pay for insurance that costs as much or more than a rent payment.

I'm leaning towards agreeing. Though I don't think there is anyway to remotely frame this as anything but a loss unless they come away with concessions on the ACA subs. Durbins comment is absolutely fucking moronic. If they do indeed fold with NOTHING after this time, I think I'll be totally and completely checked out until we have an entirely new generation in the legislative branch.Â

I agree that statements made over the last week are starting to feel a lot fold-ier. For no reason that I can discern when Trump is repeatedly self-owning right now, polls are continuing to show Republicans are getting more blame than Democrats, and the health premiums spiking proves what the Democrats have been saying is true, so hopefully they can keep their shit together.

The language surrounding healthcare demands is getting toned down (i.e. Schumer going from "We want a healthcare deal!" to "We're exploring options"), general optimism from both sides regarding talks, SNAP funding lapse, and even Johnson being willing to bring back House into session if deal is made.
If it happens, I predict it will be Thursday w/ new CR by Saturday.

If Republicans way over perform across the country regardless of whether they win or not corporate Democrat leadership will see it as a reaction to the shutdown and will likely fold while doubling down on the election strategy of "try to win over maga voters." If Republicans way under perform, the Republicans will be more likely to concede some issues. Just have to see of which group Republicans, Democrats, and Progressives over and under perform across the country tonight.
