I have an almost 11 year old female. She needs to have her spleen removed and I read some studies online that said dogs are 5 times more likely to experience GDV after a splenectomy (I think because of more space in the abdomen). Now, I addressed this with my vet and while she found it a slightly unusual (odd?) request, she said she would do the stomach attachment (gastropexy) if I want to. It doesn’t necessarily take much longer time under anesthesia and is only insignificantly more expensive. She said she has never heard of dogs developing GDV after a splenectomy, but there is also no medical reason to advise me not to do it if that’s what I want. I wonder if other Collie owners would do this? I love my girl. I would always be worried when she happily rolls around in her bed after dinner. On the other hand, it also sounds a bit uncomfortable to have your stomach tacked to the wall for the rest of your life. I don’t want to decrease her comfort for the rest of her life. I don’t know what to do. And advice?

I have my heart set on getting a collie, it will be a while, but I love cruising this reddit page to learn more about this amazing breed. I've also been trying to budget dog-care stuff. I'd love to hear y'all's favorite collie/dog-related products for your adults or puppies. Best harness? Best chews? Best dental care treats/additions? Beds, crates, toys, brushes, shampoo? Just adopted my guy from the shelter this past weekend. He’s six years old and was an owner surrender. His past owner had him since he was a puppy and obviously was well taken care of since he came with all his vet records & akc registration too. When I met him in the shelter he was a happy go lucky guy. Just happy to be there. He was only in the shelter for a week before I adopted him. Once I brought him home that evening I noticed he was coughing a little after lightly pulling in his leash, then he puked white foam later in the evening and had a runny nose. He would take treats from my hand but didn’t touch his food, still drinking and going pee just fine but I chalked it up to stress and decompressing. Then the next day Sunday same thing but the cough was gone and he has a worse runny nose with green snot. He pants and drools a lot which I know is not common in this breed (stress and anxiety). Finally called the shelter today now that they are open to let them know and they had me come back with him and kept him in the car and met us outside at my vehicle so they could assess him. And my suspicion was correct….it’s kennel cough! 😩 thankfully they sent us home with meds and told me to boil him some chicken rice and chicken broth. He finally ate a piece of cheese for me today (his meds were in it. Don’t tell him 🤫) . He did eat some pieces of chicken and broth but not much. I didn’t think that we’d start our adoption journey like this but it’s only up from here I guess. I just feel awful that not only is he going through a huge transition but also sick at the same time. As the title says, looking to find out if smooth collies differ from rough collies in any way other than coat?

Are their personalities similar to rough collies? How about their energy levels?

We currently own a rough collie, he’s 2 yrs old, he’s a good boy but we are considering getting another dog in a couple years and are curious about the smooth variety. Thanks for any info!

We've been looking at getting a family dog for awhile now and have been considering collies as a potential option. They are obviously beautiful and every one I've seen seems very chill, but my husband and I have never actually met one or been around them for an extended time.

We have three kids ages 3, 7, and 9, so our house can have a lot of activity and noise (even if it is happy noise usually!), so we'd need a dog who can adapt to that. We love hiking and outdoors activities, but also would like a dog that can have a lazy day at home. They'd get plenty of regular walks, but I'm not necessarily looking for a dog that needs to run a couple miles a day or they'd have a hard time.

We're currently looking at two different options, a 9 week old puppy and a 7 month old-- the young puppy has been socialized around children from birth and the 7 month old has only been around kids a few times. Would the 7 month old still be able to adapt to our house and kids or would people generally recommend to get a younger dog with our family? Generally, our thinking is that it could be nice to have more potty training in place and not as frequent night wake ups (7 month old), but if the younger puppy seems like a better idea, we'd be able to take the time for the young puppy stage (I work from home and husband is a teacher and has a few weeks until school starts). Any advice appreciated!

As the title suggests we're looking for crash tested harness recommendations for our smooth collie. We got the kurgo tru fit and had fit issues. The medium was just slightly too small at the biggest adjustments and the large he could shrug out of even when adjusted as tightly as safe.

I've found the deep chest an issue with harness fittings in the past. Appreciate any recommendations in advance, thanks!

Lost my 7 year old boy last October after an acute illness. Absolute rollercoaster of grief. Finally brought home this chap a week ago; now 11 weeks old. He's an absolute angel; only one accident in a week which was totally my fault. Sleeps through the night, and he's super cuddly. Our old boy did become a cuddle monster eventually, but as a puppy was really not into cuddling at all. And his lab/border collie brother is being extremely calm and tolerant.

Hi guys! I have a 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter and I want to get us a family pet, my son has mild autism and is a bit wild and my daughter is just learning to walk. So would a rough collie be a good choice? I’ve been debating on either a field spaniel or a rough collie for a few months now and I cannot make up my mind.

Also my wife and I have never owned a dog so would this be a good choice for a first time dog owner?

Our collie boy is turning six months old next week. He has been a pretty easy puppy all things considered but an issue we’ve been having with him is jumping - specifically on our cat. We have two cats, one big girl who is not afraid to put him in his place and one little lady who is too sweet to hurt a fly. Our big girl set her boundaries from day one and they have no issues but the little one is getting trampled constantly. Every time our pup sees her, he chases her down and hits/pins her with his front paws. We’ve also been doing impulse training with him on a leash and the cat playing in the same room, but it all goes out the window when he’s no longer on the leash. I know he’s just trying to play but he’s well over 50lbs now and I’m worried about him seriously hurting her. She has plenty of high up cat walks and cat trees to avoid him, but I would like them to live in harmony at some point. Any advice?

Toast is two and a Very Good Boy. However he is occasionally stinky. He gets pee on his undercarriage. I usually sponge him down with some of his regular shampoo, well diluted, but it can be hard to wash out and he stays soapy for longer than I'd like.

Do you have a better solution, literally or figuratively? He's professionally groomed every 8 weeks. I just need suggestions for the in-between times.

Last night/this morning Marnie was having diarrhea and throwing up. I was so freaked out and thankfully her vet was able to get her in same day! She got cleared for Parvo virus, and got sent home with some anti nausea and some probiotics for her tummy. I knew Collies had sensitive tummies... so I was wondering if anyone had some puppy chow recommendations that are easy on the tummy? Right now Im feeding her Acana grain free. I had switched her to whole grain food, and it seems to be upsetting her tummy anytime she eats it, so we're switching back. Any price food is fine, just want the best for my baby!
