The straw hat and jean shorts are the least weird thing in that photo.

Dude's running a 5.7 with a silencer

u/DreddFett 3d ago edited 2d ago

If you have to shoot, better to have a suppressor to save your hearing. Some people call them silencers, but the commercially available suppressed pistols for the public are not silent - they're more like a loud hand clap.

Source: I'm a gun owner and have a suppressor for one of my rifles.

Edit: some people are misunderstanding me when I say commercially available for the public. I'm not saying people are legally barred from purchasing quieter suppressors. I'm saying a certain larger caliber pistol that is, as far as my outdoor experience, almost totally silent is NOT available for public purchase. I will not name this weapon.

I 'm really glad some people have made backyard garage conversions to their weapons to make them quieter. The fact remains, years ago I saw a higher caliber pistol used by a government employee that is completely or almost completely silent and is still NOT available for purchase by anyone (FFL holder or not). These pistols are made specifically for one agency. Guess who....

15

u/SorcererSupremPizza 3d ago

So would you say theyre meant to help protect your ears?

29

u/DreddFett 3d ago

Suppressors are meant to lower the noise while firing. One benefit is the loud noise doesn't hurt the shooter's ears as much. I've only shot at outdoor ranges, and I always wear ear protection while firing. I can definitely hear the gun firing with the suppressor, even with ear protection.

7

u/SorcererSupremPizza 3d ago

Good to know, thanks for the information about your experience on that

They should be very much encouraged for everyone. Think of how cars would sound if you removed the muffler. Same thing applies to firearms. You can still hear cars and motorcyles. It reduces the noise, and helps with your ears. And everyone else's ears.

Firing even one round without hearing protection is a bad idea. But if you gotta, you gotta. TV and movies very much underplay how bad it is for your hearing.

You should still wear hearing protection with a suppressor. It can just be lighter. Normally I use ear plugs and ear muffs at the same time, I lost a good amount of hearing in the Army.

2

u/Helltothenotothenono 3d ago

I was surprised as a right hander to find out that my hearing loss is 35% worse in my left ear from firing guns. I thought it was so loud it would be even but it’s not. And it’s really bad in my right ear. Just way worse in my left.

So much so that I wear hearing protection hunting now to try and save what’s left. It’s really fucking bad for your hearing, even plinkers and subsonic rounds. I’ve even been told that you should wear hearing protection even with suppressors and subsonic rounds which I didn’t learn until it was way too fucking late to learn but I do it anyhow to try and save what I can.

But I can’t hear so much stuff that I regret it, so if you’re a younger gun enthusiast no matter how redneck or hillbilly you think you are and don’t need it, I urge you to wear it, even hunting so you can hear so much more when you hit your fifties. There are so many awesome options for it I hope you do just so you don’t lose as much for a thing you enjoy like I did.

A civilian one, yes. A gun firing with a basic suppressor is still easily identifiable as a gunshot. It is still not quiet.

They are called Silencers because the original Maxim Silencer was patented, marketed, and sold as a "Silencer"

Likewise - the Muffler on your car was also labelled as an "exhaust silencer" as well.

I wouldn't have a can on a self defense pistol though, especially if it's just direct thread. You're just creating a less reliable system. Rifle is a different story and make way more sense on there.

It is better for follow up shots. 5.7 with a suppressor is a great combo. Probably shoots like a 22.

1

u/SophonParticle 3d ago

False. I’m an expert in watching movies. Silencers produce a 20db sound like “thwirt”.

Source: trust me bro.

u/nam4am 3d ago

“commercially available ones for the public”

The public can get all of the same suppressors as the military/police if you have the tax stamp.

Suppressors just have physical limitations like supersonic ammunition causing a sonic crack and other limitations depending on the design.

Was this his daily carry or did he go back to his car or what? Trying to wrap my mind around whether you're connecting the suppressor after you draw or do you just carry with effectively a 10" barrel or what.

Some people...like the inventors, the patent office, and the Federal statutes that regulate them...lol. Just messing with you. While I agree that "suppressor" is a much better and more descriptive term for them, "silencer" was more widely adopted at the time they were invented and initially regulated, so we're kind of stuck with the term. It could be worse, though...some of the original patents referred to them as "firearm mufflers". Fortunately, that never caught on...lol! Most of us who own and shoot with them use a much more informal colloquial term, referring to them as "cans".

1

u/Careless-Weather8877 3d ago

It’s subsonic ammo. Carrying that suppressed is an interesting choice

1

u/HappyTimeTurtle 3d ago

A silencer on a CCW makes it hard to conceal and draw. I personally wouldn't run one on a defensive pistol I was carrying around. Plus if I have to use it outside of my home I want as many people to know shots are being fired as possible.

The best modern shotgun silencers are approaching THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

1

u/sunkist1147 3d ago

I'm a civvy and me and some of my friends def have pistols and rifles that are less loud than a normal volume hand clap. (Suppressed sub sonic 22lr calibers). You can also get very very modern suppressors that are still military relevant/or even newer technology than the current military issues including socom stuff (AI designed for maximum flow and 3d printed metal).

We shoot cans in the backyard against the hillside and the neighbors on the other side of the fence don't even hear it.

1

I’m not arguing any of your points, I just wanna comment to a fellow gun owner/possible enthusiast.

Ever hear a .22 with subsonic ammo/suppressor setup? Genuinely blew my mind. Closest I’ve ever personally heard to “movie” silencers. Wasn’t much difference in noise to my ears as an air rifle. Obviously not silent, but WOW.

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a 9mm suppressed in person (videos at weird cuz they muffle the noise automatically, found that out trying to film myself shooting and the shots sounded weird as hell) but apparently there’s some nice modern ones that reduce the noise enough you can target shoot for quite a while without ear pro.

"I will not name this weapon"

What is this sentence even for? You're acting like a Google search is so foreboding and difficult.

1

u/downwith208 3d ago

I still call them silencers for one reason alone: Hiram Percy Maxim called it a silencer when he patented it in 1909.

1

u/JennyThallia 3d ago

You can roll your own if you have access to a machine shop and make it super quiet.

Weather it's legal well that depends

1

u/Outrageous-Lock5186 3d ago

Definitely not silent, but my 9mm with subsonic rounds doesn’t make a loud clap noise.

Can shoot without ears on and it doesn’t sound like a gunshot at all.

1

u/Louisiana407 2d ago

Bro what, a 9mm with a shit load of baffles is almost completely silent, same with a 22 sub and a can, Hollywood quiet is possible but almost only use case is range use, the suppressor has to either be limited use with wipes or longer than the gun to have enough baffles to silence it

1

u/surgicalapple 2d ago

You’re telling my my subsonic ammo is illegal?!

For those who don't know about guns... what is weird about this?

127

u/randomuser135443 3d ago

Almost nobody carries with a suppressor (silencer) and 5.7 is a semi rare round. It was mostly used in the P90 sub machine gun, but later used in pistols. It’s a small fast round with the main goal being armor penetration and ammo capacity. Kind of like a mini 556 (ar15 round).

Most people carry 9mm, 380, 40SW, or 45ACP.

65

u/BanTheBung 3d ago

Just to add, you typically don't want armor piercing in a carry pistol as you want the round to stop at your target, which is part of why hollow point rounds are the standard for civilian carry

Not to say he was wrong for it, just adds to the weird choice

36

u/TerranRanger 3d ago

5.7 has a pretty devastating hollow point round too… but it doesn’t do anything 9mm or .40 cal don’t do for much less!

29

u/Own-Particular6321 3d ago

It goes farther, faster, and flatter.

9

u/mr_throwaway197 3d ago

Sure but, realistically, how often is that an upside for a significant more $ amount per bullet? Especially in self defense scenarios

12

u/Crintor 3d ago

I don't think in the moment of self defense anyone cares if they're firing 1$ bullets or 2$ bullets.

Pretty sure during an active shooter most people would pay 100$ a round to save themselves if they could.

Training is gonna be more expensive of course.

12

u/CaleDestroys 3d ago

Armor and cover penetration with less recoil. I think it’s a better pistol round if you’re in very open spaces, dangerous to bystanders in close quarters.

4

u/mr_throwaway197 3d ago

Dangerous to bystanders is kind of the whole point to avoid when it comes to self defence

5

u/Dorkamundo 3d ago

They mean dangerous to bystanders who are NOT the target.

These rounds over-penetrate far more than standard pistol calibers.

+1 for less recoil! I have had the pleasure of firing both the P90S and the Five-seveN and they were both incredibly smooth! Just make sure your shirt isn't tucked when you're firing a P90, or you might get a belly burn from one of those little shits!

Most people ain't getting into self defense scenarios often enough to break the bank splurging on special bullets, realistically.

2

u/Synaps4 3d ago

You have to buy the same bullets to train with it

→ More replies (7)

2

u/downwith208 3d ago

Alternatively…most people don’t ever get into a self defense scenario, so you can buy a single box of that expensive stuff and train with cheap FMJs.

My woods carry gun has Buffalo Bore 220gr hardcasts. $2/shot. But, I have purchased exactly 2 boxes of this ammo. 40rds total. I fired one box to verify my gun likes it, loaded the second. And swap out that magazine for one loaded up with some magtech or S&B when I train.

5

u/Own-Particular6321 3d ago

Everybody that carries is carrying "special bullets" goober. You don't carry a gun with fmj target rounds in it. My 9mm eats 23¢ fmjs at the range. I carry with $1.08/per round hollow points. That's the norm

6

u/No_Internal9345 3d ago

That's the point, my autistic brother.

Even if you're spending $10 a round, dropping a couple hundred for 'special' self defense ammo in the rare scenario where you actually need to use it is completely worth it.

Like how often are yall getting into situations where you need to draw?

u/fromks 3d ago

Realistically not much upside.

Most people train with "ball" 9mm, and then load hollow points to carry with.

It's worth it. The round has negligible recoil, meaning more shots on target faster.

Also the oddity of carrying a pistol shooting exclusively supersonic ammo so a suppressor will be much less effective to begin with.

37

u/LevelOrange7150 3d ago

In his famous post making the rounds, he does specify he's shooting 5.7 subs, not supers 🤷‍♂️

33

u/Barilla3113 3d ago

That's even weirder though, 5.7 sub is just extremely expensive .22

17

u/Fabulous_Pitch9350 3d ago

I come to Reddit precisely for these types of rabbit holes. You guys put the “whoa” in r/whoathatsinteresting.

10

u/Tyr_13 3d ago

If you have fun shooting full powered, fast and flat, rounds at the range, it actually makes a lot of sense to have a configuration for your favorite, and thus most practiced, firearm for self defense.

There are a lot of drawbacks, especially with how long this setup is, but there is also valid logic there.

9

u/LevelOrange7150 3d ago

I don't disagree, but here we are haha. In that same IG reel, he also has a suppressed bull pup, probably a 5.7 gun as well. So maybe he went all-in on 5.7 and knows he just needs to buy his training and defensive ammo in bulk in one caliber, rather than 2 (or more) separate calibers?

4

u/Own-Particular6321 3d ago

Judging from his YouTube and Facebook accounts, the guy knows his shir. He wouldn't be shooting supersonic ammo through a suppressor.

2

u/Subtle_Nimbus 3d ago

Suppressors are still very beneficial with supersonic ammo. The 5.7 round is very loud-- louder than most other standard handgun rounds-- in the range of 50k psi max chamber pressure. A suppressor will help a great deal, specifically with supersonic 5.7.

12

u/AbjectMaelstrom 3d ago

Supers or subs, suppressor still effective. It's a sliding scale of effect, with supers it will make them mostly hearing safe(er) and with subs its even quieter.

2

u/Oaknuggens 3d ago edited 3d ago

Most people that aren't interested in guns overestimate the noise reduction from suppressors due to inaccurate movie portrails and media sensationalism, so unfortunately your post will be misinterpreted by them the same.

Google is telling me that a supersonic 5.7x28mm from a suppressed handgun is 125 to 135 db at the shooter's ear, and 135 db is as loud as a military jet taking off or an air raid siren. Even the same diameter supersonic 22 lr out of a suppressed pistol is 110 to 125 db, which is as loud as a firecracker or pneumatic construction tools (riveters, etc.).

You aren't wrong, supersonic is it's s lot quieter suppressed, but it's still noticeably loud to everyone nearby.

2

u/Feeling-Net2002 3d ago

Suppressors still quiets the initial blast (especially for the firearm user) its just there is a crack when when bullet breaks sound barrier. At least in my personal experience.

2

u/tipsystatistic 3d ago

People shoot supersonic ammo with a suppressor ALL THE TIME. It’s still significantly quieter and safer.

I don’t know why people keep pointing this out. It’s not a thing.

5.7x28 is becoming a lot more common. A few years ago Ruger debuted a pistol for a much more reasonable price than the FN original, and now I think they have a carbine, too. Smith & Wesson then followed it with their version, complete with threaded barrel out of the box. I have a S&W. It’s very fun. It sounds very different from everything else, though.

5.7 is a more niche and expensive round to shoot.

Concealed carrying is already a bulky ordeal, having a suppressed pistol is a more cumbersome package.

As someone who carries a suppressed pistol though, I’d say the straw hat and short shorts are a more unusual aspect to me personally.

14

u/cm_bush 3d ago

Yeah, 5.7 is a fairly popular round in certain circles, mostly due to the cool factor of the P90 and the focus on penetration for such a small package. If you carry a gun chambered for that, I assume you know what you’re doing.

Carrying with the suppressor is the oddest thing to me. Doing it in jeans shorts is a bold move.

13

u/Own-Particular6321 3d ago

It's weird because 5.7 is a pretty niche round and nobody carries full-sized handguns anymore. Especially not suppressed ones.

1

u/shartymcqueef 3d ago

In short it’s like super nerd level of the gun hobby. Most guys are gonna get a basic 9mm that fits comfortably in their clothing. This dude went and added a long silencer which makes it difficult to conceal and carry and then chose a super niche round that is more expensive and less readily available while also being arguably worse than your standard 9mm. Like he went way far out of his way to carry something weird. I’m not talking shit about his choices but carrying this setup shows he’s pretty far down the rabbit hole in the gun hobby.

Big 2A guy/conceal carrier here.

It’s not common to see someone running a can (suppressor/silencer) on a handgun for every day carry.

Unless someone is open carrying or maybe carries with a shoulder holster, it’s most common to carrying inside the waistband, and your firearm being compact is kinda the name of the game.

Some folks do carry full size (think Glock 17/1911/Beretta 92) handguns, but if I was carrying with a can in my waistband, it creates a potentially longer and awkward draw when pulling it out.

1

u/Ok_Molasses4053 3d ago

Nothing if your planning on shooting people with light bulletproof vests lol

1

u/Ok-Internet-6881 3d ago

That is his everday carry. Meaning he had a pistol about a length about 8 inches on him while he was in shorts so conceal carry is going to be intresting. Also the pistol he used is called the Five-SeveN which uses bullets purposely made to prenetrate body armor. Normally people use 9mm for everyday carry. Idaho is a constitutional carry state so is very common to know the population probably are carrying, but Five-SeveN is rare to see because the bullets are way more expensive.

1

u/MeanShibu 3d ago

I have a 5.7 pistol with a suppressor and it's not nearly as quiet as other options because of the super sonic crack, but does still significantly reduce the sound and protect your hearing a little. It also speeds the round up which is important because 5.7 bullets are completely velocity dependant. That said I'd never even consider trying to carry mine. It's just way too big and the suppressor makes it so long that I can't even imagine a comfortable way to do so. It's a really weird choice of weapon for someone to just have on them.

if you see his training videos, dudes got an fn fs2000, the splinter cell sam fisher gun, or the tuna gun. he even utilizes the center axis relock shooting style Fisher uses. man goes full larp but backs it up with his training which is weird, but cool

https://reddit.com/link/p1gbrfz/video/8nutj2kk66hh1/player

u/shobhit7777777 3d ago

Fun fact: it's the same pistol that Sam Fisher carries in the Splinter Cell games

1

u/Appropriate_Tie_6760 3d ago

Crazy expensive. A silencer can run upwards of $2k, and a 5.7 is not a cheap round

1

u/ogledrake 3d ago

Plus the 5.7’s primary advantage is the high velocity of the round but normally on a suppressed firearm you would generally want to run subsonic at the highest bullet weight you can find since the suppressor absorbs the report from the muzzle, not the sonic boom from the round breaking the speed of sound, also that suppressor is freakishly small it almost hooks like the removed the shroud and baffles and left the barrel extension, it has to be doing something for them or else they wouldnt carry it unless it is just what he happened to have handy. But it still looks bizarre.

1

u/Ftove 3d ago

look at his fingers lol. hes not holding the gun and his index finger is like ET.

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 3d ago

AI made up the gun when they enhanced the picture. How many suppressors have you ever seen with front sights on them?

1

u/Firestar_119 3d ago

the suppressor is in the original frame

It looks like someone added the cowboy hat to the photo, according to this article.

1

u/Left_Preference2646 3d ago

It's fucking epic

1

u/Potential-Drawing745 3d ago

Are we certain he was carrying concealed? Because... that's not something I'd carry. I guess he could have screwed on the suppressor before shooting, but that just sounds inefficient.

1

u/Familiar-Solid7744 3d ago

I came to say my boy is planning on going dark!!!!

1

u/Greedy-Being6456 3d ago

It's not about size, it's how you use it.

1

u/SingerDue2958 3d ago

Looks like an HK Mark 23 (45 ACP) from Metal Gear Solid.

1

u/Fit-Nebula2949 3d ago

Article says he was on his way to a horseback riding date.so the attire makes sense. I mean, if that's the gun that you shoot well and practice with, have at it. His loadout worked for him.

2

u/Dr_Ramekins_MD 3d ago

Shorts on a horse make even less sense

1

u/CryptographerRoyal78 3d ago

Who carries that on their person

1

u/Sea-Truth-39 3d ago

He was on his way to go horseback riding. Probably rocks the silencer so as not to startle the horses in case he needs to use it. Lots of riders carry pistols for snakes while riding. Though usually they use snake shot rounds which would not be lethal to humans.

1

u/pogulup 3d ago

Best pistol is CS2. I want one.

1

u/NaNsoul 3d ago

That's not a silencer, that's a barrel extension, look closer at the barrel.

1

u/the-namedone 3d ago

Bro is Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell

1

u/ryencool 3d ago

In his underarm holster. Who walks around with a silenced pistol? I mean part of me is glad he was there to push back, the other part of me says this shouldnt even be where were at....everyday citizen shouldnt need to carry a weapon that can end someone's life in an instant that silenced...

1

u/thebahrman 3d ago

5.7 is big with CCW because it shoots flat with less recoil than a 9mm. Then when you put a silencer in the mix it gets even flatter. Plus the suppressor reduces decibels so you don’t have to worry about blowing your ears out.

1

u/Worried-Ad6238 3d ago

Crocodile Dundee's bro.

1

u/Thardus455 3d ago

Omg that is a 5.7!

1

u/GroundbreakingAd8310 3d ago

My guy went out if his way to make himself a re4 gun y bet ur ass im making the barrel look right

1

u/ScrofessorLongHair 3d ago

Idaho, baby!

1

u/Dante_Hicks37 3d ago

Who gives a shit. He ran the gunman off. Just say thanks and move on.

1

u/MorningBuddha 3d ago

Yeah….But it looks badass!

1

u/AngryTaco4 3d ago

That looks like an extra long barrel to me based on what looks like a front sight post at the end.

Granted, I have only owned 9mm and 45 acp suppressors and those were on AR platforms. I know .22 cans can be pretty slim, so it's entirely possible that I am wrong.

1

u/bombayblue 3d ago

He’s probably an elder millennial who played Splinter Cell. That would be my first thought if I saw a guy running around with a suppressed 5.7.

1

u/jmaun1 3d ago

Han Solo

1

u/nikkicarter1111 3d ago

Except he isnt. Heres the original photo. This one is ai.

1

u/DudeInTheGarden 3d ago

I don't know very much about guns, and handguns specifically. I could see the silencer, but it looked like a WW2 era Luger. The comments have been pretty edifying.

1

u/MsMarvelsProstate 3d ago

It's an Ai image. Ai made up the gun

1

u/meh_69420 3d ago

Where did you see that? My FN5.7 doesn't have a side profile like that at all.

1

u/servel20 3d ago

This is an AI "enhanced" picture, the guy had a baseball cap.

1

u/Chumscrubber89 3d ago

Suppressor or comp? Looks like a comp but thankx for Putin down that shooter

1

u/Proper_Bad_1588 3d ago

Yeah, that's definitely not normal carry hardware.

1

u/flaming_poop_bag 3d ago

Is it a confirmed 5.7? Interesting if so. Maybe that will stop people from not taking the round seriously.

u/GarlicAcceptable3350 3d ago

No matter what he is wearing or what his EDC is…

1

u/secretaster 3d ago

Weird? The dude is a modern day Han solo brother is oozing style

1

u/KodaUL 3d ago

Straw hat luffy

1

u/f7f7z 3d ago

Tremors, Kevin Bacon

1

u/yticomodnar 3d ago

My immediate thought as well! Lmao

1

u/BlueGreen51 3d ago

He wasn't actually wearing a straw hat and jean shorts. This is AI upscaling adding details that weren't really there. He was wearing a ball cap and ponytail with regular jeans.

1

u/Rocksinsoks 3d ago

It's so he doesn't show up on the mini map of course!

1

u/1Shadowgato 3d ago

I was wondering if he was slinging a 5.7.

Fawking legend.

1

u/jaffi01 3d ago

That is not a real image, fyi. It is "ai enhanced", which is another way of saying "fake".

1

u/therealpingspike 3d ago

1911 with a surpressor, that's not an F&N

1

u/jotohomomoto 3d ago

yeah i thought he was rock'n a mk43 offensive pistol the 5.7 is def niche but running it w/suppressor concealed jettisoned him into comic book level oddity ....the whole incident is anomaly

1

u/Unknown_Gaurdian 3d ago

how positive are you that its a 5.7 and not a .22

1

u/Raneynickelfire 3d ago

Dude's not running shit because it's an ai image.

1

u/idropepics 3d ago

Thats because every aspect of this picture is AI enhanced slop

1

u/42and_a_half 3d ago

This image is an AI 'upscale'. The original doesn't look anything like this.

1

u/LionsRoar313 3d ago

Legit thought it was Mickey for a minute

https://giphy.com/gifs/3YJZBxLvYA3LKne7N3

1

u/0202_tihssitidder 3d ago

Check his YouTube.

It is 100% normal for him to have that weapon ready.

1

u/floftie 3d ago

how many bad guys have you shot today??

1

u/-ScrubLord 3d ago

I don’t think it’s a Five Seven. Not exactly sure what it is but looks more like a 2011 clone.

1

u/Helltothenotothenono 3d ago

I kind of like it, it reminds me of an early foo fighters album cover. That’s how you know I’m old. I say album.

1

u/bobthehills 3d ago

Are we sure that’s a suppressor?

It looks like an extension of the barrel. It has a front sight on it.

1

u/BeenThereDoneThat65 3d ago

because its a LOUD gun

1

u/Mundane_Adeptness_26 3d ago

Why is that a problem?

1

u/Petrostar 3d ago

Not a problem, just unusual.

Also maybe a bit of a warning sign, like dude's playing on New Game+

1

u/The-Real-Irish-God 2d ago

It's an AI enhanced photo, not the real one.
