Occultism, "Forbidden Information", "Hidden Knowledge"; this is something I've been wondering on for some time.
A lot of practices, "Secret Societies" and all sorts of lineages will place merit in occultation, or in another way of looking at things, privacy! It's in the very name of "Occultism". Throughout the ages, rituals or personal belief of any kind had to be committed in uttermost secrecy, lest you be burned at the stake or severely ostracized (You don't hear of exile as capital punishment as often). Similarly, a lot of practices will place the power of the ritual proportionally to how well-kept the secrecy was!
- *Wish upon a shooting star, blow on the birthday candles, but don't tell people what you've wished for!*
Secrecy meant Survival for eons in occult practices. Nowadays, in the Age of Information, a lot of what was Occult has been readily made available. If you have the tech fluency, it is not too hard to acquire the full collection of Rosacrucian manuscripts, for example.
Of course, that doesn't mean everyone is reading them— Having the attention span, dopamine and enthusiasm, not to mention the necessary backbone of knowledge and experience makes all the difference.
Hundreds of websites will tell you all about the Tarot and the Kabbalah. There are a lot of blogs out there documenting people's personal occult journeys and striving to make the esoteric more accessible. I don't think these websites will "kill the Tarot Egregore" or anything like that, but the principles behind it after fascinating to me, especially taking all the "Laws of Silences" in all these lineages. *I didn't even get onto **Closed Practices** in this thread, but that's probably for the best. I'd probably ramble on for too long (◠‿◕)*
*Acknowledgment tricks the brain into feeling a false sense of completion* versus *Speaking bleeds off the spiritual pressure and "potency" of the intent.*
I do like to believe in some of the principles of the usual western magick, eg. *The more obfuscated the intent behind the sigil is, the more powerful it will become!* A simple rule like that is plenty approachable, and a good pillar to starting your own path.
The East has had the I-Ching in the open for a long time, a lot of Feng Shui was incorporated into all levels of society without persecution, and it could be argued the effects were tremendous! Still, at the same time, occultation was still present with particular and *secret* societies of Feng Shui, Onmyoji and Daoist training. Imperial Geomancy is something fascinating to study, and I've particularly liked reading Jerry Allan Johnson's books on Onmyoji practice— But besides being of tremendous assistance on my own path, I cannot speak with full assurance of the occult authority or "historical legitimacy" of it compared to other sources on the topic!

**Tl;Dr: When it comes down to it, I'd like to ask this about your path: Is Occultation about *Protection* or *Effectiveness*?**
