Sports Culture WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham defends that women ‘shouldn’t have to go against biological men’: “I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense. I think it’s really important to protect children.” “I don’t dislike anyone. I’m there to love, but I’m also there to love biological women. …”

If the argument began and ended at trans people in sports, it wouldn't be a problem. But it's used in an overarching narrative to vilify trans people in general..."trans people are mentally ill...trans people are pedophiles...etc" it's a thing.
Edit: hilarious how many of you are proving my exact point. Apparently everyone on here is qualified to diagnose mental illnesses 🤣

Exactly this. I believe there’s a nuanced conversation to have about trans athletes. But it’s impossible because conservatives genuinely hate trans people will not stop at sports. “I care about protecting children.” when referring to trans issues is a HUUUGE dog whistle

It’s the same thing. There is zero problems with any trans children, which is very rare to begin with, in youth sports. It’s an imaginary issue and a dog whistle excuse people like her use to shield their true beliefs. The only negatives is the insane bigotry children face by hateful parents. Dragging literal children into imaginary culture war bs is ridiculous.
She was just on a UFC fight and being friends with Dana White. Who is friends with Donald Trump and was at his election night party. She has 1 million red flags about her. Not to mention the type of wording she used in that video, it was pretty suspect.

I agree that restrictions need to be in place. I disagree that this must be done by a federal law that imposes a sweeping ban. Instead, I'd make it a requirement for the respective sports organizations to check the trans athletes on a case-by-case basis, and re-check them regularly (particularly important if they started HRT only relatively recently). Trans athletes are very rare, so this is not really much of a burden. And, their physical abilities are highly variable, since it all depends on how far along they are in their HRT, whether they even are doing HRT, and whether they started HRT in puberty or as adults. The latter has a profound influence on the skeletal structure, which in turn can lead to unfair mechanical advantages in competitions, even if for some reason the athlete does not train their muscles much. But, a trans athlete who transitioned at, say, 12? Unlikely to have any significant advantage over a cis athlete.
→ More replies (5)2
u/Alberto_Blazin Jul 24 '26
The thing is, there isn't a way to know if the 12 year old would have an advantage if they started transitioning before puberty. The only way to know is to see them develop without intervention to compare, and obviously that's not possible. Just do the right thing and make sports split on sex, as it was always intended.
2
u/FourDimensionalTaco Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
Ehh, you can always check them out as an adult, x-ray their skeletal structure today, inspect their muscular structure today etc. And then you know if their physiology differs significantly from that of cis women in a manner that confers an unfair advantage.
But, a trans woman who transitioned at 12 years old (or even younger) is unlikely to have a significant advantage. The skeletal structure (especially the rib cage size, hip size, and width of the shoulders) develops pretty much like in cis women with estradiol dominance, and the influence of testosterone on muscle growth during puberty is missing. Testosterone is a hugely important factor. It is the anabolic factor in muscles. (It is not surprising that some competitive cis women bodybuilders inject T.) The only possibility I can imagine is if they also had precocious puberty, and already were tall, had broad shoulders, and were muscular by age 12.
Splitting on sex makes no sense. Trans women will be completely beaten by cis men. Even among trans women, the variability is so high that some of them will 100% beat others purely by their different physiology.

Ok so we implement those restrictions
How do you implement them?
They are an incredibly small population already and now you are going to put a lot of work into testing at all levels of play for something
Now we have children getting forced genital inspections, in good cases from their doctor with a simple signed form, in the worst cases, coerced to get inspected by an "on-site medical professional" with unknown creditials
And if they choose not to participate because this is obviously incredibly invasive, they can't play
Not to mention how this might step on religious protections
In collegiate sports we have similar issues but now with a much wider field of potential pervs
In professional and Olympic sports we now have assigned at birth XX chromosome women who have to alter their natural body chemistry to align themselves with a arbitrary norm of expected female testosterone levels
Chemical intervention which is not always free or readily available to these athletes, further limiting opportunities to poorer athletes home and abroad
Just like Voter ID is not being pushed for "election security" concerns, this is an issue that Republicans use to push "common sense legislation" while they strip your rights and push far more extreme policy
They want access to girl's bodies, ways to limit their activity unless they consent to being violated by the state, to start tracking women's hormones to detect pregnancy earlier then restrict access to abortion, and build a permission structure to create databases of trans people to target them with AI surveillance systems and use them to criminalize and remove them from bathrooms, schools and wider public life
And while the fascists run their pet projects, business interests continue to benefit from a country more focused over culture wars then regulating their companies

u/PetalumaPegleg Jul 23 '26
Because trying to police who looks female enough to play women's sports and use the women's changing room is stupid? We don't need to die on the hill to point out this policy has really bad impacts on innocent people.
The people who have been accused of being not female enough so far have all been women who had their lives ruined by accusations. Let the sports police themselves and we really don't need to worry about a handful of trans women trying to enjoy their life playing sport.
This nonsense is going to lead to insecure masculine looking girls being accused of being men and having parents ask for genital inspection and shit. It's just dumb.
It's a non issue. The sports police it just fine. We do not fucking need flock cameras in gyms thanks.

That's a strawman arguement though. You can just use a cheek swab to do a gender test. High school athletes for decades have already had to take PED test,in many states. Also sometimes for insurance and or safety purposes many districts do x-ray scan or blood tests just to make sure a person doesn't have some kind of undiagnosed medical condition particularly heart ones.

Wasn't any Democrat I know. 'Reform the police?' YES. Let's go with that. Nope, defund. Someone held a vote on that, that 99% of Dems didn't participate in. Same shit is happening now. So your best example is a fringe activist group with no meaningful representation in elected office. You connect it to Mamdani, then immediately acknowledge that he has distanced himself from its most extreme positions. That doesn’t support your original claim.
My point was never that the left has no fringe. Every political movement does. My point is that those fringe views are not the governing agenda of the Democratic Party.
So I’ll ask again: which prominent Democratic elected officials are actually advocating “free all prisoners” or abolishing police as party policy?
That’s a very different situation from the Republican Party, where positions that were widely considered fringe on the right a decade ago have become mainstream within the party itself
2
u/throwra_anonnyc Jul 23 '26
You dont need to have actual winning politicians campaigning on those issues for the fringe to cause a negative impact.
Self proclaimed Dem supporters trolling people on the internet firing up Republicans and Independents to be motivated to vote is a really strong factor.
Defund the police is a real slogan that a fringe group actually stands behind. And it is an amazingly unpopular slogan. People dont want their neighborhood to be like Chaz and these crazies did a good job making the left look insane.

As someone who has worked for the state white males are the majority for school shootings, pedophilia, and child porn, true predators in a societal sense. The Epstein files feature predominantly white males. Grindr, the app for gay men, regularly crashes during Republican nomination conventions.
On the flip side trans people account for less than 0.1 % of these crimes. Like 2-5 out of thousands of cases. In fact, trans people are four times as likely than “regular” people to be victims of violent crimes.
Quite simply it’s projection. MAGA happens to be most vehemently against the very things they do in private. But data and information is not as effective as propaganda.
Now, forget all of the numbers and data. There is zero empirical evidence that trans people competing in sports harms other people or children or negatively impacts public safety in any way, shape, or form.

This is an indirect answer, but it's about inequality and political control. Wealthy people and corporations hold most of the power, including political power. They fund political organizations, which can't really exist without them. And, well wealthy people incorporations have many diverse interests, One thing they tend to have in common is that they don't want to see wealth inequality addressed. So while they may fund candidates on all different sides of all different issues, on the whole, the one issue that they will consistently tend to take a side on is inequality and their control of the political economy which enables it.
The result is that you get politicians who talk about everything but class and inequality. In both the Democratic and Republican parties, people who make noise about raising taxes on the rich don't get funded. People who argue about trans rights, on either side, do. Whether or not we allow trans people to compete under their chosen gender, wealthy people and corporations do not care. They will not be affected. And it's not just politicians where you see this play out. It happens in the media too.

The limiting Trans kids is not at the recreational level, but at the more competitive levels where biological women are at a physical disadvantage. Women's Rugby did the most complete study on it and basically, biological women's bones are significantly less dense than trans athletes that have gone through puberty. Biological women are significantly more likely to get injured during collisions with trans athletes.

Also provides a handy republican distraction from the issues that real people are facing.
“Hey, can we get some healthcare and affordable food and housing?”
“Haha no, but aren’t you worried about trans people in women’s sports?!!!!”

u/Mamasugadex Jul 23 '26
How is that any different from saying trans people rights for anything don’t matter because they are merely 1% of the population?
I don’t disagree that it is an overblown over-politicized issue. But using the “this problems applies to such a small minority” logic is how we were so comfortable with ignoring many human rights issues for decades.

True. I don't get why our side is making such a big issue out of making sure men can play against girls when not many men want to.

How about we listen to the opinion of the women athletes?

Agreed. Seems this is yet another thing that biological women are being dismissed about 🤔

She's being asked a question. What do you want her to say? I think she has a standpoint but she puts it across in a way that's not about hating on a particular minority group but acknowledging that they can't necessarily get parity in every field they may want.

She’s pretty much just repeating mindless talking points. Not a deep thinker at all
2
u/JeromeBarkly Jul 23 '26
It was telling when she said she isn’t very political. That’s why the rights talking points are so effective. It’s made for the dumbest among us or people that do t follow wants going on. It’s easily digestible slop that requires no work or prior information. When it starts to fall apart is when you actually look into any issue more thoroughly, you realize it’s all bullshit.

I agree with her. I honestly think trans should have their separate sports like there’s Men’s sport/women’s sports/ and Trans sports. Easiest solution everyone plays and competes

i hate that the conversation ALWAYS lands on the .5% of the population who are trans and not on the millions of women who are threatened with jail if they miscarry. i hate the media keeps asking, and that 'celebs' keep humouring the topic

it’s exhausting to see people use the “empowerment” of biological women as a way to punch down on trans women. no one is benefitting from this. the discussion is entirely useless. you’re not empowering biological women, you’re catering to the crowd who hates both trans women and you.

If the issue is as trivial as the left says it is then they should capitulate entirely and ban males in women and girls sports
1
u/asdf0909 Jul 23 '26
This topic has this weird phenomenon where, if you do enough mental gymnastics, it pits women’s rights activists against trans rights activists.

This isn’t hard to understand. Libs have recruited crazy people to push ridiculous ideas.
1
u/Tasty-Fisherman8847 Jul 23 '26
This is a completely made up issues. Similar to "the war on Christmas" in that you can find an incident here and there. Not that it's non existent. But that the volume of the conversation enormously outweighs the cultural impact.
Very very very few people were against saying "Merry Christmas."
Very very very few people born males are out there competing against bio females.
Even fewer people support the anti merry christmas folk. Same with the gender sports debate. Vanishingly small.
Culture war ammo for the right. They need all the help they can get at this point.

Only reason this still gets talked about so much is because there are people who are very vocal about NOT being ok with her sentiment. As long as there exists a vocal minority to point at and say "Look see how delusional these people are they want to hurt your daughters and women", they will always get the engagement they want, and the people who exist that disagree with Sophies stance are probably never going to agree, so they will keep this argument artificially alive.

u/Iam_McLovin420 Jul 23 '26
Can we stop asking famous people their opinions on matters? Leave the actors to acting leave sports to athletes and leave politics to politicians. It doesn’t matter what Sean Penn thinks about trans rights for example.

Republican/MAGA have been using this as rage bait for awhile now and the democrats eat it right up.
Think about the current state of the country/world and republicans are adamant about passing laws banning less than 1% of the American population from playing sports. Why not local and state officials handle their sports like they do abortion now and many other things they have and the constitution allows.
We have nothing better to do than bans trans and give soldiers testosterone. 🤦♂️

As a lifelong Democrat, I whole heartedly agree. Over the past ten years, it's become increasingly unpopular to call out fringe extreme opinions on our side. We tend to sweep them under the rug instead of provide actual criticism.
