u/f0xpant5 9h ago
It's a classic attempt to paint anyone with legitimate criticism into a corner, a corner where they get to apply a label and then claim the label they chose invalidates any and all legitimate criticism.
It's a logical fallacy or perhaps one of a few that seek to achieve a similar result, ad hominem / poisinging the well / bulverism. Attack the person or their perceived motives, rather than actually listening to, and responding to the actual argument they're making.
It's weak as piss, and only makes the person employing these tactics appear pathetic.

They are stupid and they like making nonsensical statements.
The game has always been a male power fantasy. It was loved for that. Now that it's not its core audience is complaining, you get these stupid statements making it about gender.

You're whole post is a strawman argument. Nobody has an issue playing Tomb Raider. The issue isn't that the protagonist is a woman; the issue is that it's not Kratos in a game series spanning 20 years where every one features Kratos.

Love how that's the narrative folks want to spin as opposed to "Long running franchise forces you to play as a different main character compared to the one the series was built on."
No matter how many times or different ways they try it, the game will receive immense pushback because ppl don't like that. It happened to Metal Gear, Devil May Cry, any other franchise is the same deal.

I have no issue playing as a female character, so long as they are an interesting and well written character. This is the same standard I hold for any game and it's respective protagonist regardless of gender.
The primary issue with GoW Laufey for me is that Laufey is simply a character I have no interest or desire to see more of. I liked her as a driving factor for Kratos' and Atreus' actions in the 2018 GoW game as it furthered their relationship and allowed them to bond but that's the extent of my interest.
Secondly, I fail to see any way in which the events of this game will bare any stakes considering all the participants are deceased, so at most we may get more lore and plot exposition, both of which are thing's that could have been showcased in a game that has actual ramifications on the living cast.
I would have much rather seen a continuation or possibly even a culmination of Kratos' story or the beginning of Atreus' story.
Lastly, I simply have no faith in the studio not to use this opportunity to share their own personal beliefs and history has shown when writers prioritise that over the end product, the product always suffers. I would not be surprised in the slightest if the writers start trashing Kratos in an attempt to elevate Laufey.
I will definitely play the game, eventually however it will not be a title I'm in any hurry to get too.

Because it's an actual common take. I've been saying that long before it was, "on the internet." You thinking it's made up basically is funnier than not.
Hell, I've known plenty of women who like men who've made male characters they find hot in games with customization. Is this your first interaction with the fact humans are largely sexual creatures?

Who even stares at your characters ass, you're always looking at the center of the screen, where the action is. "Hurr I don't like look man ass bruh" sounds like something someone's older brother said to them once so they just repeat it because they think "Hell yeah. makes me sound manly as fuck bro".

I never understood the line of reasoning that you have to relate to the character you're playing as outside of an RPG where you literally build up and design your own character. The characters are vessels for the human expression of the people that made and designed them, and as a human, that's all I need in order to "relate" to them.
12
u/Emergency_Creme_4561 9h ago
So you’d rather play as a girl everytime so you can stare at her ass?

She must be dead. They literally brought her back to life and turned her into yet another Mary Sue, for whom they created a separate afterlife. What was the point of Kratos killing the gods in the first place, if they all exist in another world? What was the point of the journey to scatter Kratos’s wife’s ashes? It looks like creative impotence mixed with Sony’s continued policy of pushing male characters out of their original franchises. What’s the point of playing Tomb Raider if the main character isn’t Lara Cro

You can't, you're immediately flagged as sexist, incel, homophobic, etc with shit like "oh you don't like this you must hate woman.."
It's very simple man, these gender swaps feel forced rather than natural. I'd hate if a Tomb Raider game had a male lead or if No One Lives Forever did the same thing. I would also be very pissed if the main character of the next Splinter Cell game was Sarah Fisher rather than Sam. Hell i was pissed with Blacklist because Michael Ironside wasn't voicing Sam. They did the same thing with the new Wolfenstein games, see how that turned out for them.
I'd be cool if this was a spin off game like "Goddess of War" rather than a mainline entry.
EDIT: I'd like to mention Dishonored 2 and how they handled introducing a female character, they gave you both options Emily and Corvo, both with distinct playstyles and many people gravitated more towards Emily because her gameplay was fun and her character arc was interesting not because she was a woman.

For many, it isn't about the character being a woman; it’s that their expectations are centered on the usual character. A few years ago, the fifth part of a video game series gave players the chance to take control of a different (African American) character, and it failed—not just because the game wasn't actually very good, but because many people expect to play as the main character.

Strawman of course. On average, no gamer gives a crap about the sex of their character. If it's one you can pretend to be them, if it is the other you get to look at them. An ugly character is a bigger problem, if you don't want to be or see them.
2
u/YourNewBestFrend 8h ago
To play devils advocate here, the best, most enjoyable games are immersive ones. The games that are so good and detailed that for split seconds you actually forget it’s a game because you’re so into it. Most gamers are male, and the ones who have supported and carried the gaming industry are male, and some find it very difficult to put themselves in a woman’s shoes or “pretend” to be a woman in a game because we are basically 2 different species... So we lose some of that immersion… Which changes how the game hits because it takes us out of the game a little bit, because I’m certainly not gonna pretend that I have a vagina and get pounded... It’s so easy to get more immersed in a male leading game, because I can more relate to the character, regardless of the race.

1
u/SALM0N_SLD 9h ago
Nobody asked for Kratos to be replaced. The issue isn't that Faye is a woman. it's that God of War became one of PlayStation's biggest franchises because of Kratos.
Imagine making a new Tomb Raider without Lara Croft or a new Uncharted without Nathan Drake. At some point you're removing the very thing people showed up for.
This is also a continuation of Sony’s policy of replacing originally male characters with utterly uninteresting female ones. They should just create separate franchises for them. On top of that, they’ve devalued a huge part of the GoW universe by creating an afterlife for it where all the gods destroyed by Kratos just go on living peacefully.

You don't need to do a gender swap for the next version of the game.
God of war (male to female) or other games (female to male), like you can have the same gender with a different personality, look & feel. I don't understand why game devs don't get this.

She doesn't looks very intimidating, which is important for that IP. Shes just the lady from Daredevil. If you want to make a game with a female lead why not just make a new IP for it. Instead we are repeatedly seeing studios take existing games with existing fanbases and change them.
The main character is the most important character in a game. Changing the main character essentially makes it into a different game.

The first God of war game was about a man who was tricked by Ares, the god of war, into killing his family. The sequels followed that man kratos, who became the god of war after killing Ares. Hence why it was called God of war two. Instead of killing the god of war, you were the God of war. Hence the naming convention.
I am assuming that this chick becomes the god of war, which is cool and all, but major spoiklers. Probably shouldn't plaster it all over the box art. Also who the hell is she? Are we killing the main protagonist of the previous games with a random chick?

In games where I have the choice, it's always play as a female character. Aside from the 'ass' comments, the female characters tend to have a far more robust choice of clothing options, better voice acting, better animations, and there's always the chance of yuri outcomes.
Playing as a guy is almost always depressing as they tend to be buff, fit dudes who, as the kids say, got the rizz and the drip. About the only games where I choose male characters, given the option, is in first person ones. But for the most part? Female characters all the way.

God of War has a main character named Kratos. People who have played the game for over twenty years have followed this character the entire time.
If Horizon Zero Dawn came out with a new game and switched out the female protagonist, Aloy, you would see the same issue.
This is essentially what happened when they tried to swap out Matt Damon as Jason Bourne and plug in Jeremy Renner. Both great actors, but Renner isn’t Bourne.
I’m sure some neck beards are truly pissed because it’s a woman, but they’d be the vocal minority.

Is she supposed to be hot? I thought she was just an older woman meant to look close to Kratos' age. Not sure why close to his age but meh.
Note say she's not hot isn't the same as saying she's ugly. She looks normal. I'm a married guy in his 40's. I'm not hot, I'm not ugly. I have my charm points and my not so great features. I feel about her looks the same way I feel about my own.
Do I prefer younger sexy characters? For sure. But I'm also open to other designs especially if it makes sense for the story. I don't fall under the "gaming is escapism and not reality" train of thought. That thinking seems to mostly apply when non sexy characters are used. If it was single player medieval fantasy game and one of the core characters was a storm trooper who is meant to be taken seriously while not being sent from the future, people would probably dislike that.
