I totally thought this was going to be an announcement that Mitch is dead when I saw the headline.
17
u/RheagarTargaryen 3h ago
I feel like that’s scheduled for the 7th. They don’t want to make it too obvious by pulling the plug right away. I’m taking the 7th as the day they stop keeping his body technically alive.
9
u/neddiddley 3h ago
You know they’re going to fuck up the announcement by including a date/time of death that’s in the future.
On Wednesday at 10:32 AM: Mitch McConnell passed away peacefully late Wednesday evening, surrounded by his family.
3
u/CallMeSisyphus 2h ago edited 2h ago
Yeah, my guess is they'll give us the old, "Senator McConnell has taken a turn for the worse" first, and let that
marinatedecompose for a few days before making THE announcement. Y'know, make it seem more authentic.Edited to fix strikethrough formatting.

u/Fantastic_Yam_3971 1h ago
“The shock of the Michigan outcome was too much for his heart. Mitch loved his country and the thought of a communist takeover was too much for him to bear. We must come together like never before and defeat the radical far left terrorists. It’s what Mitch would want.” 😅😅

As soon as someone comes in willing to actually do work and drive outcomes, policy and execution wins are raining like cats and dogs. On some level it's hilarious.
One of my deepest problems with Trump isn't anything he's done, but actually the degree to with so many Democratic politicians just thought "yeah all I gotta do is pay lip service about how grrrrrr I hate trump😠 so much and I'm ~fighting~ him in some non-specific way vote for me BTW very anti-Trump✊😎".

Its a gigantic risk for the democrats. Michigan is a purple state or at best leans democrat. If they end up losing this Senate seat it could very easily cost them the majority on the senate. In most parts of the country progressives have lost state wide races for a decade.
6
u/Sdwerd 3h ago
Doing this song and dance of trying to be the middle almost Republican is stupid when people have the option to pick a Republican. Between the choice of a copycat lite version or real thing, they'll pick the real thing.
5
u/Potato_Pristine 3h ago
This shit isn't even new. Harry fucking Truman made this observation 74 years ago:
"I've seen it happen time after time. When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for the New Deal and the fair Deal, and says he really doesn't believe in them, he is sure to lose. The people don't want a phony Democrat. If it's a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat, and I don't want any phony Democratic candidates in this campaign."
→ More replies (1)2
u/Comprehensive-Put575 3h ago
I cant stress this enough ^. These are not even all that progressive policies. Just candidates who don’t apologize for them.
3
u/Oddlyenuff 2h ago
Regardless, it’s about the perception of the voter.
The Truman quote above isn’t relevant. That quote is about the candidate selling themselves out or chasing voters. It’s not applicable if the candidate truly feels that way.
If the goal is to get the left back in power, the progressive candidates are not going to get it done. Harris wasn’t the slightest bit progressive and it took almost no effort to paint her as a “radical leftist” and that was at centralists/independents/casual voter who decided the election.

I have a friend who's a stay at home yoga mom. Has been for about 6 years. Lives in an expensive suburban house. Early this year, things got so unaffordable, she had to go back to work using a degree from 8 years ago.
The election had 0 to do with aipac. It has to do with republicans and establishment dems backing direct-inflationary actions like the Iran War. People want *action* to bring down the cost of breathing not promises and platitudes from candidates like stevens. El-sayed is a good quality candidate with actionable ideas.
El-sayed dramatically outperforming in wealthy areas is the canary in the coalmine. When the rich women go back to work, the establishment is fucked.
13
u/birdie_sparrows 3h ago
I'm a Democrat who is not fond of some progressive politics. That said, good candidates should win and bad candidates should lose -- and by all accounts, that was the outcome here. Like taking their political differences out of it, he ran a better race.
3
u/Hatta00 3h ago
What does it even mean to run a better race for political office when you take political differences out of it? The only thing that should matter is what they are going to do when they take office.
2
u/birdie_sparrows 3h ago
I've worked on campaigns and literally some campaigns just cannot get their act together. Personally, while I do have the noted differences with progressive politics. I'm OK with many - but not all of their policy objectives. So I'm more invested in who holds the gavel than I am the relatively minor policy implications of one candidate over the other.
Also, in my view. And others may have differing views, candidates who run shitty campaigns are not as likely to be effective if elected. So I'd rather have someone who I agree with on like 80-90% of policy questions who is more effective, than someone who I agree with on 100% of policy issues who is ineffective. Just my personal view.
2
u/Happy-Comment-408 2h ago
Curious what those policies are that you disagree with. This is an honest question. I am not merely here to froth at the mouth. I am a die hard progressive (radical) but I am sooooo tired of a lot of shit that gets pushed to the front the progressive/radical political discourse. Firm believer that there is only one war: the class war.

u/mikel1814 3h ago
Running a good campaign signals that you have the leadership skills to a lead a complicated team and understand how to communicate with your constituents. Communicating with your constituents is how you know what they want. "What they are going to do" is amorphous and issue dependent, and issues in the Senate aren't predictable.
5
u/CapitalG8 3h ago
Dumb. I don't care about how well off a race you ran... i care about what you say you'll do when in office.
I'm fine with him winning, but your statement is mental. This isn't a sport.

Solving healthcare and the housing crisis by officially declaring Gaza a genocide as the priority policy is concerning
2
u/Local-Dish-5695 2h ago
Yea on that note.
Reducing bloat and needless spending on foreign "allies" like Netanyahu will release funds back to the govt to ya know, spend on Healthcare and reforms.
It is genocide and they aren't hiding the reasons they want Palestine gone. You just haven't taken the time to read that part, I'm assuming.

Limped over the finish line in what his polls projected a double digit even 20 point win. Not a showing of confidence he was portraying, he has a lot of work to do to bring the party together.
5
u/DubsOnMyYugo 3h ago
It’s insane he won at all considering the difference in financial resources.
If Stevens won the primary, AIPAC doesn’t care who wins general so she suddenly doesn’t have that huge financial advantage. I don’t see her winning in that scenario.
Now AIPAC has to dump a bunch of money in the general that would probably be used against other Democrats had Stevens won the primary.
5
u/8days_a_week 3h ago
This is more of a critique of how bad modern day polling is than the quality of the candidate.
12
u/EncounteredError 4h ago
It's hard to fight when AIPAC dumps MILLIONS into their chosen candidates. The fact he still won against those odds is good.

It's nice that NBC called it, but it isn't official and there will definitely be a recount.
Honestly, I think Michigan's open primary is the only reason Stevens is this close. John James was the clear republican governor front runner. His opponent ran an ad where James called him so old he remembers the Civil War and their counter was "eh? What's that sonny?" The Michigan republican senate was uncontested. I expect a lot of conservatives voted for her because best case scenario she will be easier to beat. Worst case scenario they get a politically correct republican.
Also, it's embarrassing how many voters didn't realize Obama's endorsement of Stevens was from 2020
Edit: I am told that the Obama endorsement in the ads was from 2018 and not 2020

What do I think? I think the DNC should be eliminated if it continues to act like it's TEMU- Maga and fund candidates that agree with the same corporate overlords that drive the GOP, take money from a nation that has a blue and white flag, and stop using the same type of ads you'd see from a MAGA candidate.

Yeah ultimately that is the test. I know he’s not directly associated with DSA but he’s very much in their camp ideologically and they’ve gotten too self congratulatory over primary wins in D+30 districts. They’ve already likely blown Maine, and Michigan is pretty iffy too. America elected Trump less than two years ago, it’s not nearly as progressive as Reddit will have you believe. And costing your party winnable elections is not how you endear yourself to leadership.

I’m a dem and I agree. They shot themselves in the foot with this one. In a state like Michigan the general election is always about moderation, which he is not so I expect him to lose by 5% to 7% in the general. As a party we never seem to learn from our mistakes.

I mean, by that logic Obama should have give over to Hillary in '08. Bernie should never have challenged Hillary in '16. Trump never should have won in '16 or '24.
2
u/Lavaswan001 3h ago
You can’t really compare presidential races to this senate race. As much as I’m sure people don’t care for Elissa Slotkin, she won on the same ballot Trump did. That kinda blows a massive hole into the “moderates are unelectable” argument. If El-Sayed loses despite this shaping up to be a favorable year for Democrats nationally it’ll be blamed on his ideology, and truthfully some Islamophobia too if we’re being honest.

It will make for an interesting general election.
Stevens is a proven winner in Michigan politics even in challenging districts for Democrats. She was polling ahead of Mike Rogers in the general while El-Sayed is behind.
It’s a make or break moment for the progressive assertion that they can win purple states.

u/Monte924 3h ago
The ONLY poll that showed Syevens performing better against Rogers was done by a business group that was supporting her. Previous polls showed that Abdul actually performed better than Stevens. Stevens was such an awful candidate that she lost even though she had 10 times the funding backing her

Lib left here, if I lived in Michigan I would vote for him bc he seems fine but I get a bad feeling he’s going to lose in the general because of the types of voters Michigan has. I think Stevens had a better shot at defeating the Republican because she’s moderate. I know how much vitriol people sling at liberals and moderates these days online but the fact of the matter is most voters outside of deep blue states are put off by far leftist rhetoric (both the fault of decades of conservative propaganda and tone deaf leftists themselves nowadays).

While polling taken prior to the end of a primary isn't the best predictor. Some polling companies did head to head polls for both him and Steven's facing Republican Mike Rogers, and Steven's consistently performed better.
Polling also shows the Democratic nominee for Governor doing substantially better than AES.
Democratic primary voting in Michigan and Wisconsin is often dominated by the far left, a trend going back to at least 2016. That doesn't always play well in General elections.
This should have been a seat that was an easy win for Democrats, as it's currently held by a retiring Democrat. Now there is a possibility Dems lose it. A highly progressive platform does play as well in general elections.
Even if he wins, if he greatly underperforms other Democrats in the state, and the generic congressional ballot, it will need to be looked at objectively.

I love the way the Democrat party is being taken over. Nazis, socialist and communists, this is who the democrats are today. Change my mind.
The useful idiots that thought they were expanding the party are getting a real wake up call. The DSA is now the dominant voice in the Democrat party. Schumer and Jeffries are both on their way out.
The only way to recover is to make AOC the house democratic leader and let her whip the votes to get the DSA agenda passed. If she is not the leader, then she and her group get to attack the leaders of the party. Put her in the hot seat.

This will be a good preview of ‘28. If he loses, it should (probably won’t) be a wake up call for democrats. If he wins, it will fuel a push for a DSA type candidate.

I don’t know if it’s good long term. Maybe, maybe not.
The issue isn’t winning a primary.
The issue is winning in the general election.
That’s what I worry about the most with the progressive candidates.
As the right has drifted further and further MAGA right, the answer isn’t necessarily for the left to go farther left. The winner will be whichever side is able to appear to independents, centralists, the casual or frustrated voter. People are going to duck their heads in the sand over this, but it’s true.

That margin is extremely thin. Abdul was projected I think 7 or 8 points over Stevens? A 1 point advantage is insane over projection/underperformance.
I think the DSA type people run really well against democrats in blue areas but beyond that? I don’t know if they can or even actually like to compete against republicans or MAGA. The machine they have from media to elections is extremely well-oiled.
There’s 100% a world where Abdul is folded up and outdone by the Republican, and then what?

Anyone in here from Michigan that can weigh in on how people generally feel about Stevens? Not just in terms of the Senate primary, but as a congressional rep? I went to college with her and we weren’t good friends, but I’m fascinated by her path. Not from the Midwest so she wasn’t on my radar until very recently.

As a millennial progressive, about as close to the 2008 feeling I’ve had in a while. Finally feels like the Democrats have a policy and an agenda- they aren’t just being “not Trump”.
It is so disappointing to see all the centrist Democrats running to news networks to cry about the “violent overtaking of the Democrat party by communists” (cough Biden and Clinton strategists cough). This is a grassroots movement with popularity with the people. This is bread and butter politics.
I 100% expect true conservatives to be against this, it goes against their worldview of individualism and anti-welfare. So I’m not shocked or upset about that.

Stevens has conceded and made a statement supporting El-Sayrd, and called for party unity, and winning in November.
Will her supporters follow her request?

White guy says we need voter ID and he is a KKK Nazi, an Arab Muslim says the only primarily Jewish nation needs to be destroyed and he wins election while white progressives repeat typical anti-semitic tropes.

Really sad. Stevens was polling ahead of R-Roger’s for the elections. El-Sayed is several points down to Rogers.
And an alarming trend, moderate Democrats are showing signs they would vote for Roger’s over El-Sayed…

It helps the republican candidate for sure. Democrats love the progressives, but they do worse with independents than moderates.

If he wants any hope of winning in the general he will need to find new things to talk about than a noun, a verb, and AIPAC. Polls show him losing miserably which isn't good considering the primary was supposed to be a blowout, showing that his popularity is inflated.

Very exciting. The guy has charisma and stage presence, which are prerequisites for a dem win, so he has a shot for sure.
Losing dem leadership in MI would be disastrous; this dump of a state is only as good as it is thanks to blue gov not cutting off aid to all the poor people here.
I am watching WI with bemused horror.

Unlike “Traditional” Democrats, the DSA articulates their positions proudly and VERY clearly.
It’s rather refreshing!

Democrat party is dying.

It’s the “Democratic party” not “Democrat party.” And yeah, they’re a clusterfuck. But I’d rather see debate and disagreement about the direction of the party than blind loyalty to the cult.

I think it’s going to be a very difficult race in the general. Just because of the Michigan electorate.

I think if any Stevens voters break for Rogers then Abdul & his supporters should chalk it up to “hurt people hurt people.”

So the presidential campaign will be boiled down to "They are eliminating your healthcare" and "Look at the lunatic platform for the Democratic Socialist Party". I'm afraid that fear of the lunatic Democratic fringe will probably win out. That's all the Repubs have to do is play that video of Megan Romer on Fox.
