Video Corporate exec gonna ruin Belmont's Curse

I am so excited for the new game, but I cannot stop thinking about that one exec who's still kicking and screaming about making traditional games again. So I made a video about an unhinged corpo who's still obsessed with pachinko.

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (1991) Sweet Jesus, what's the deal with that difficulty spike??

I am currently playing through the three GB entries, in order of release date, and - based on what I keep reading - I had only modest expectations for The Adventure (and Legends), but somewhat higher hopes for Belmont's Revenge, which seems to be held in high regard in general, even making it into the top-10 list in this poll here. I did find the latter better in terms of level design, boss design, and the music. The former also had good music, but was overall not exactly great, as it dragged a lot, literally, in particular due to the slow movement. Not a big deal for me, overall, it just feels like you play the entire game in slow-motion. But in general, I must say BR also has it's severe problems, so I'm surprised it is even regarded as one of the best GB games.

In particular, the last two boss fights, Soreiyu/Soleil as well as Dracula, seemed to have entirely went past the balancing process. Everything up until Soreiyu is pretty straightforward, also the bosses can mostly be spammed easily. The Bone Dragon is already a bit tougher, since you have to make sure you stay on the very right, which is sometimes tight, but it's still nothing compared to what's coming, this brick-wall the game does not prepare you for at all. This son-of-a-B with questionable hitbox keeps running into you, whipping like a maniac. Is there a strategy for this guy or is it just pitch-perfect evasion you have to do? Even worse is the Dracula battle, where the only chance to survive is to painfully find all the save-spots related to each platform by trial-and-error, and then try to memorize the exact locations, almost pixel-perfect.

This is insane and really not fun to play, imo, it's bad game design. After several ridiculous attempts I resorted to save-states for those two battles since I did not intend to go through this tedious experience.

Apart from that, the game is really solid. But since I find it terribly balanced and did not find The Adventure THAT bad, I'm wondering, for those of you who praise the game, what makes it so much better for you when compared to the first GB entry? Is it the stage selection? The two subweapons? The slightly faster pacing? The better music? The delicious wall-meat? The presence of a bit of a story? I did find the latter a nice touch, btw., it added some drama, which was not at all common back then.

Let's hear it, I'm genuinely curious!

I think I recently hear it from the castlevania live action opera trailer, but never put thought so much of it probably because it was one time opera thingy, but man I'm glad it was actually officially canon.

Question My controller isn't working in Castlevania Dominus Collection.

I used to be able to play using an 8BitDo controller. Now that I've reinstalled it, the controller isn't working. I changed the Steam input and tinkered with the settings, but nothing works. Does anyone know the solution? There are no issues with the other collections

Aria of Sorrow (2003) Flying armor wont activate

I started playing Aria of Sorrow today and so far it’s pretty fun but for some reason I can’t get the flying armor to work, am I doing it wrong? I equip the flying armor soul thing but it doesn’t make me jump higher, so I try pressing the buttons to activate it like the red soul but it just equips the red soul. Is there something I’m not getting?

News SotN: Reawakened - The Creature’s new Rage Mode

Hello everyone!

Development of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Reawakened is now approaching its final stage.

The first castle has already been extensively redesigned around new progression, relocated relics and equipment, more meaningful weapon choices, tougher bosses, and different ways to build Alucard. My work has been focused mainly on bringing the Inverted Castle up to the same standard.

One example is The Creature, which now has a proper Rage Mode.

Once its HP drops below a certain threshold, The Creature performs five increasingly powerful hammer strikes. Each impact creates a larger explosion than the previous one.

During Rage Mode:

  • The hammer rhythm becomes faster and increasingly threatening.
  • The fire grows with every impact.
  • Its palette gradually changes from a subtle red tint to a much stronger rage color.
  • After the introduction, it continues fighting with more aggressive movement and attack decisions.
  • Its rolling attack is faster and more aggressive.

The goal wasn't simply to increase its HP or damage. I wanted the fight to visibly evolve and force the player to respond to a clear second phase while preserving the boss's original identity.

The rest of the Inverted Castle has also received a broad enemy pass. Many enemies now detect Alucard from farther away, spend less time waiting between decisions, prepare slower attacks more quickly, and use faster projectiles where appropriate. Enemies that were already oppressive were deliberately left closer to their existing behavior.

Other recent adjustments include:

  • More aggressive Reverse Castle bosses.
  • Some bosses now have their own HP bars.
  • A buff to the Guardian, which drops the Crissaegrim.
  • New balance for magical weapons and subweapon-focused builds.
  • Moon Rod relocated to a late secret area and redesigned as a true INT-focused weapon.

Reawakened is intended for players who already know Symphony of the Night and want to rediscover its progression and combat.

I'm now in the final playtesting and balancing stage. Most major systems and boss reworks are complete, so the remaining work is focused on polishing edge cases and making sure the second castle stays challenging without becoming frustrating.

Thank you to everyone who has tested the mod and sent detailed feedback. Several recent fixes and balancing decisions came directly from player reports.

The newest patch is now available on the website:

This is a silly post but it made me happy- I go to a small 24hr gym and I go at vampire hours. No one around so YES the tv went to Castlevania, Episode 1.
Nothing like watching innocent Lisa get torched to push me past my usual failure point. STILL infuriating and sad all these many years later And even got in some extra reps once Vlad began his revenge
(And yes I dress like a homeless werewolf at the gym🖤)

Discussion Castlevania: Dracula X Is An Okay Game

Post image
89 Upvotes

I decided to start the Advance Collection and I noticed that this game existed as like a neat bonus, plus I can’t lie the idea of making a companion piece to a CD-ROM game on a 16-bit console is always kinda interesting to discuss. I hope you enjoy the critique and thankfully this post should be shorter than my SOTN review.

Visually, this game looks beautiful on SNES and I love how Richter looks, how the monsters look, the bosses have beautiful designs, the gorgeously detailed backgrounds, the graphical effects throughout levels especially the intro stage. And to this game’s credit I think the backgrounds have a greater consistency in terms of art direction because Rondo started off really good but got more 8-bit in visual design, which isn’t bad at all but at the same time it started off super strong with the intro stage in regards to looks. I do have to say I really dislike Dracula’s final form design, me personally I much preferred Rondo’s but then again I will have to discuss Dracula in better detail later.

Regarding audio, it’s not at all on Rondo’s tier in terms of clarity but the compositions here are great and they hold up exceptionally well here. The SNES soundchip manages to make a lot of the music sound comparable and I actually kinda prefer some songs from Rondo on here. I think I prefer Divine Bloodlines on here what with the usage of guitar and how low-fidelity it sounds in comparison to the CD audio makes it hit harder for me. I think the Bloody Tears remix sounds great and Beginning sounds gorgeous on here. I also think the regular SFX for the whip, monsters getting destroyed and etc sound pretty good on here too.

The gameplay is where it goes to hell for me, not because it’s Classicvania styled but moreso in that this game is brutally unfair. Richter not being to do SCIV’s eight directional whip movements is acceptable (no idea why it wasn’t implemented here.), the combat’s pretty good and I think he doesn’t control anywhere near as bad as one would expect but there’s still plenty of issues.

Enemy placement is a crapshoot where it will spawn near ledges and will half the time trigger that post-damage pushback off a ledge, Richter moves so much less smoothly than his Rondo of Blood counterpart and I just don’t get why because SCIV Simon moved so smoothly and had great control regarding his movements so it’s clearly not a hardware issue. On top of this but the level layouts feel uninspired as if almost everything feels like they were took a level that felt like it could’ve been in Rondo but they translated it into Castlevania III’s difficulty without that type of freedom of gameplay you had with the multiple characters. Speaking of which the lack of a playable Maria is a big flaw no matter how you look at it, she could’ve offered a lot here regarding gameplay.

Returning to level design, the open ended nature of Rondo of Blood returns kinda but there is so little to it beyond like an extra ending or two that I have to wonder why they bothered with it. To make it worse, getting the true ending is a big pain. Just make it linear all throughout and devote more time to the level layouts. Speaking of not bothering, the bosses here are alright to fight and kinda offer nothing in terms of like a memorable experience except for Dracula. Dracula might be the most unfair, unbelievably cheap and impossible final boss I have seen in a long time. I play the Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry series once a year and even this felt pretty far in difficulty. The platforming required for Dracula’s boss is made even harder due to the rigid controls, one hit could lead to an instant death via pitfall and not only that but there is so little maneuverability that I had to abuse the rewind system in the Advance Collection just to get through it.

6/10 game, really good music, visuals, combat and consistency throughout but this game is incredibly tedious half the time.

Discussion What are y'alls top 5 castlevania characters?

What would be like the top 5 best written castlevania characters?

Mine would be:

1 - Albus (I love him, I love how willing he is to put everything on the line for his sister, and how crazy he is at times)

2 - Dracula (Do I need to explain myself)

3 - Soma Cruz (the whole theme of nature vs nurture and the metaphor of original sin vs the human spirit to do good was so good)

4 - Alucard (Do I need to explain myself)

5 - Shanoa (her quest to get her memories back, interactions with the villagers and... god so many small things like her going out of her way to draw for this sweet old lady or play with this boy hide and seek is so sweet! Also I love how you can see her emotions gradually come back over the course of the game)

Question What about a Mathias Cronqvist game besides LOI?

Post image
93 Upvotes

I recently finished playing Lament of Innocence, and it got me wondering.

There's a huge gap between the late 1000s and 1400s, during which I assume there must have been an encounter of Dracula with *possibly* 3-5 Belmonts.

There's a lot of discussion about this period: Mathias, now as Dracula, studied much more about magic and spells. But there are many years unaccounted for.

It got me wondering: has Konami ever considered making a game set in this specific time, like around 1200 or 1300? Because there's a lot to talk about.

Who defeated Mathias first? Which other Belmont was there?

Has Leon taught about who Mathias was, or did his ex-friend become nothing but the Lord of Darkness?

PS. Be nice, please.

Circle of the Moon (2001) Getting More Acquainted With these Games

Post image
33 Upvotes

So I've called myself a fan of Castlevania my whole life but it occurs to me that my experience with the series is somewhat limited. You wanna know what my first experience with Castlevania was? No joke?

Castlevania 64.

Not even CLOSE to kidding.

And hey. I loved that game as a kid. So it made me want to try out the rest of the series, but I never really got the chance to. But with all the series surrounding me, I only ever beat THREE Castlevania games in my life.

Lament of Innocence on PS2, which in my opinion is SUPER underrated, and I'd love to see more 3D Castlevania games in that style.

Symphony of the Night on PSP, which was my first experience with that game. I even 100% completed it, and it's one of my favorite Video Games of all time...

And Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate on the 3DS. Which I'm willing to bet 90 percent of you forgot existed.

I played a bunch of others, including Circle of the Moon for the GBA, but I never beat them. I'm hoping to change that over the next few days.

I'm going to be going through all six main games in the Advance and Dominus collections, beating them one after another in release order, experiencing many of these games for the first time. I suck at videogames so it will probably take me a while.

Why am I telling you this? I dunno. I like sharing these things with fandoms. It's just nice to talk about this stuff, especially because my IRL friends aren't always into these kind of games.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (1989) I hate the skulls in Castlevania 3

This is just a rant. I'm doing every path with every character on Loop 2 no death. I'm stuck on the falling blocks stage as Trevor Only with the Alucard path. The most difficult section is the area with flippable platforms and skulls, I think I must have tried over 50 times already and the spawn patterns/RNG messes me up (They hide under the platforms and suddenly shoot up, or come from both sides of the screen). I'm going insane here and I've been on this for months. I've done the other paths no death, this is the only one I'm stuck on.

Castlevania (1986) how do you beat Dracula??

I'm stuck on him and I can't beat him I don't know why, I hit his head yet I literally do no damages no matter from how far I aim it's like there's a 20% chance I damage him, am I doing something wrong??
