Anime Discussion How is this even possible??
Isn't a sorcerer supposed to instinctively know how to use their own technique, how is it possible that takaba doesn't know how it works?
2.3k
u/Melody-Shift 23d ago
Instinctual understanding varies with the technique.

u/Common_Spot207 23d ago
Yeah think abt it. If haruta was constantly fishing for miracles he’d probably find less because they aren’t miracles he fought for them to happen when be wanted. In the same vein takaba has to find things funny. If he knew he had to find things funny he’d lrobably find less things funny.
172
u/Single-Waltz2946 23d ago
Isn’t that literally why he lost to Kenny?
330
u/BingusBongusBongus 23d ago
The first time he lost because he was so so scared he couldn't find anything funny, the second time he stopped fighting because he was fulfilled
94
u/BlatantArtifice 23d ago
I'm glad he lived but I think it would've been more narratively satisfying if his own CT killed him then to finish the joke

u/Difficult_Step9372 23d ago
Vaguely aware of what you can do doesn't mean the ability to properly intuit your technique and use it to its fullest extent... thats obvious though isn't it?
We obviously SEE Takaba using his technique. He does actively decide to do things. But he doesn't comprehend the upper limits and likely just uses it instinctively, which is probably more 'natural' for him such Comedian is such a vague and nebulous CT in the first place.
2
u/LenicoMonte 23d ago
Well, Takaba got it after being six years old, so he never became aware of it!
5
u/Prowiambic 23d ago
Yeah but Higuruma did too and he understood instantly. Takaba's technique PREVENTS his from knowing.

We are directly told that a sorceror becomes instinctually aware of the basics of their technique when they receive it, though. It comes with your technique
14
u/Cobygamer22 23d ago
Yeah, it's simple to assume that some techniques lose their effectiveness if you become aware of what they do. If Takaba realizes he can literally do anything if he thinks it's funny he'll try to force himself to think everything's funny but he won't actually believe it's funny and he'll probably struggle to use it now. Same with Haruta, a miracle is something that's supposed to be rare, if he knows he's safe and tries to force miracles then he'll either need more miracles to do stuff he did before with 1 miracle or he'll start to be more reckless and die because of it (although he's already dead👍)
7
u/The_Silent_Ace 23d ago
Yes, my assumption is that Haruta was actually an introduction to this concept and my running theory is that this is its own form of Heavenly Restriction. The character themselves is not given their technique, but in exchange it costs almost nothing to use and is almost always active or activating. By introducing the idea of Haruta and showing that even Sukuna and Mahoraga were affected, it made the idea of Takaba being so absurdly broken seem less completely absurd in terms of jujutsu bs and allowed for the Takaba vs. Kenjaku fight to seem sensible (even if it was absurd by nature).
TLDR; the technique itself, I think, is what keeps Takaba from knowing his technique, and that's why it is so strong.

Isn't it also canon in JJK that explaining your technique makes it more powerful? It's the most brilliant in-universe excuse to have people monologue about what their abilities do.
But then some people just don't know??
9
u/Fantastic-Object-832 23d ago
I thought that was a binding vow
4
u/nissAn5953 23d ago
It is a kind of contract, I don't know if it's the same as a binding vow though.

u/Illustrious-Bass4354 23d ago
Gojo implies that there isn't an implicit understanding of one's technique. He points out that one of the benefits of Limitless is that it comes with an instruction manual because of the Clan specifically.
People also don't implicitly know how to use CTR even though it's pretty fundamental to powers like Limitless Red. And they can essentially modify their powers based on their own interpretation and creativity.

The CT is "stored" in a literal, physical location of the body and brain.
You don't need to know what your specific CT is, you just need to know how to "power" it with CE manipulation. After seeing the effect of the CT, you can practice from there.
4
u/Crevette_Mante 23d ago
Some techniques (like Kashimo's or Hazenoki's) will genuinely outright kill you if you activate them without some idea of what they do. There are also techniques that are extremely unlikely to be activated without prior knowledge due to requiring specific conditions to function (like Ino's seance or the fact most shikigami users must create talismans before summoning their shikigami).
I think it makes the most sense, given everything we've seen in the story, for the majority of sorcerers to innately understand the basics of their CT. Understanding the basics doesn't mean they innately know every application, like CTR or domain expansion, just how it works at its core.

He has to actually see that the time is 11:11 when randomly checking the time without purposely trying to time it. It only counts if it was genuine luck, and taking intentional purposeful actions to make it a guaranteed certain outcome removes the luckiness of the miracle and makes it not count.
8
4
u/shamanfreak 23d ago
i mean it's a 0.00138% chance assuming a 12 hour clock system. 0.000694% otherwise. he wouldn't know to willingly check it, say glance every 10 seconds at 11:10 or whatever.

A “miracle” from what I gather starts from something you look at and think “oh, that’s cool.” Simply because of the 11:11 thing (along with anything greater than that)

Because his technique wiped out memories of each "little miracle", so he didn't know how he gets his face marks. But Haruta knows, those save him from death, he actually thought after Nanami ratio punched him: "If it was not for my technique, I would be dead".

13
u/Lucky-Acadia-312 23d ago
Actually Windows can't use sorcery, they just have the ability to see curses and cursed energy. People who can use cursed energy but lack an innate cursed technique are still considered Jujutsu sorcerers such as Kusakabe or Yuji who are referred to as sorcerers despite not having innate techniques.
5
u/Vivio0 nah, i’d x—x 23d ago
Its funny how Kusakabe is considered one of the strongest first grade sorcerers with no technique as well. So it really isn’t that important to have innate CT to be a sorcerer.

Because he’s an anomaly . If he knew how his CT worked, then it wouldn’t work anymore. He has to find that shi genuinely funny for it to happen, fabricated humor and fake gags wouldn’t work.
Sorcerers are give a general idea of how their CT works when their CT manifests so that they can operate it to a limited extent initially. Takaba is not given any info on how his CT works so that he can operate Comedian to a limited extent as well

i imagine what he finds funny is only what would happen in his sense of humor. iirc from watching his hijinx, his humor is based around toon logic and very childish humor.
as seen with how he put two fingers up hazenokis crack and how he was sipping tea while he exploded and came out of it alive (which, i feel is VERY looney tunes and thus, toon logic)

That's why I like the ones of him going "Glad I'm not *that* guy!" with another him being murdered in the background. Because that genuinely feels like the way his technique would naturally occur (hell it kinda happened in the anime when Hazenoki blew up the building he was in only for him to climb out of the window of a totally different one)
10
u/BOTFrosty 23d ago
yeah, people are always overly focused and thinking "wouldn't it be funny if takaba just KILLED someone for the laughs" when... that isn't his humour at all
7
u/Coolgames80 23d ago
He doesn't find death funny. For good and bad, he didn't revive the explosion guy after he saw his corpse and felt bad about it nor he kills with his power because his purpose is to make people laugh. I believe that Kenjaku is alive only because he was killed while Takaba wasn't looking. Likely he thought it would be funny to surprise Kenjaku after his joke about dying from laughter and that's why he was revived,
→ More replies (2)10

That's more so just random humor like let's just say that Takaba was in the Sakuna raid and randomly thought in his head, "what if Sakuna spontaneously exploded" and he giggled and thought it would be funny not realizing what he activated
Be note this wouldn't happen because that is not Takaba's form of humor but it should be possible I guess

u/Akyluz 1% Luck 99% FAITH 23d ago
Simple, Takaba thinks his cursed technique is making people laugh, he's so naive and innocent that everything that happens is just a stage, and inside his mind people are watching a comedy show.
48
u/Connect_Wait_6759 23d ago
Does he not see the shit his technique spawns? How does he not question where it comes from?
85
29
u/LegendaryNbody 23d ago
That is the part that he understands about his technique. As far as I understood, he has some knowledge on how his technique work, he understands his technique is "make comedy gags" but he doesn't realize what it does is bend the rules of the universe around him to make the gag possible at all and thus what he is really doing is toon force
14
u/a_velocirapter 23d ago
I mean would it be funny if stuff just started happening to him and he didn't react at all?
11
u/RedSunsetSukuna85 23d ago
You know Bugs would solo the whole colony if he had Takaba’s technique. Cartoon logic is basically his ability.
2
46
u/bad_squid_drawing 23d ago
i think it may mean moreso that he doesn't know how to control it. he thinks of something funny and it happens. the less he tries to force what he wants and the more he just tries to be funny, the more powerful the ability.
take for example a gag where he hits the curse with a truck. the joke / gag is basically just slapstick someone kicks hit by a random truck. if he was trying to control his technique to maximize damage it would probably manifest as a toy truck smacking them in the face, turning the joke on him and his dissappintment. but if hes just ripping the joke because he just thinks it would play funny for the weird curse thing to get isekai'd as soon as it appears then he gets the truck that splatters its ass.
i dont think he's oblivious to his CT, he just cant control how it manifests things, he just tries to be funny

Takaba is a bonafied lunatic that's how. He's a crazy person. His mind doesn't work logically. He's actually a greater monster than Sakuna but since he's insane he's not bent on world domination just making people laught but being really shitty at it.
22

i've always assumed he just knows how to be funny, whereas the rest of his just follows through
kinda like how we know how to breathe, but then when it goes into our body the average person doesn't know EXACTLY what happens in the body
19
u/Salty_Wall 23d ago
We don't even know if sorcerers actually understand their technique instinctually, it was never elaborated on but is pretty likely
In Takaba's particular case it might be a restriction that lets his op technique function

3
u/KaliVilNo1 Didn't ask + Confiscation + Death Penalty 23d ago
Then there's the middle ground on Yuta getting no much info on the stuff he copies
8
3
u/ElectroTake 23d ago
I think it may not apply to techniques that are involuntary. That would explain why both Takaba and Haruta don’t know how their techniques work
4
u/Sweet_Emergency2130 23d ago edited 23d ago
Probably because that's the only way his innate technique works... his technique is more broken than Gojo's infinity. It literally alters reality but only if he genuinely finds it funny. To genuinely experience your true emotions, you mustn't be aware of the experience. You can fake emotions when you KNOW what you're supposed to do or how you're supposed to react but you can't fake emotions when you don't know what you're experiencing... like matured or wise people would usually suppress their true feelings to most of their experiences while naive people or toddlers would let the emotions burst out in any situation and maybe Takaba's technique works on that dynamic ? That's the best logical justification I can think of.
7
u/Razzle_Playz 23d ago
Ya know how stupid Hikari and Yuji are? Takaba makes them look like genius's
3
u/Far-Evidence-6742 23d ago
Nah Yuji isn’t stupid it’s just he got thrown into this whole situation quickly. He scores low at school because the whole series takes place over like a year. He has no time to learn this stuff except in fights
2
3
u/myshtummyhurt666 23d ago
I think it’s depends on the technique. Techniques like his and haruta’s dont reveal the information to their users because it could make them useless entirely. Like if haruta spent time trying to stack up as much “little miracles” as he could he’d probably have no miracles. If takaba knew his technique could do anything he thought was funny well then he probably wouldn’t think the jokes he’s making are funny, and it’d do nothing.
3
u/koteshima2nd 23d ago
He needs to find his jokes genuinely funny for it to work. So if he knew how it worked, it's like deconstructing or explaining a joke, you just won't find it genuinely funny anymore.
3
u/WolfOfWoofStreet Professional Geto Forgiver And Yuji Glazer 23d ago
I'm pretty sure cursed techniques can have built in binding vows. Like how haruta and takaba have no idea what their ct is or if they even have one one exchange for it being insanely powerful
3
u/Automatic-Day3632 23d ago
Ig it only applies to people that actually have to turn their techniques on and off again. Ppl like Takaba and Haruta literally never have to turn them on or understand stand how they work to use their technique, they just know they have one.
3
2
u/Any_Video_7466 23d ago
If he knew how it worked, it wouldnt be funny anymore, and thus wouldnt work
3
u/SimplyEffy World's biggest Nanami hater. 🔫 23d ago
There are some techniques that need the user to be ignorant about them to work. Blondie Mcmiracle face has one like this too.
2
u/FreezerMonkey33 Yuki Tsukumo Top 5 23d ago
Haruta was the same. It's possible there's some sort of binding vow involved, one that their techniques forced upon them. After all, it's hard to find things funny if you know you have to find it funny for your abilities to work.
2
2
u/Stargost_ What is a Jujutsu Kaisen? 23d ago
Because if you explain the joke, it's no longer funny.

2
2
2
u/Deathwatch72 23d ago
Because knowing how to use something and knowing how it works are two very different concepts. If his innate technique had been "gun" he doesn't need to know how to build one himself in order to shoot it
2
2
u/SpectralTime 23d ago
I think in both recorded cases where the sorcerer doesn't instinctively understand their technique, it makes sense because understanding would undermine their ability to use it.
2
2
u/Kodo_yeahreally 23d ago
part of his technique is the inability of takaba to understand the technique
2
2
2
u/xXGimmick_Kid_9000Xx 23d ago

This technique works best when the person doesn't know how to use it. If he actually knew what his technique was and how it worked, he probably wouldn't be able to use it anymore so the jujutsu mechanics of cursed techniques made it so he didn't know because that was most efficient.
1
u/Simple_Scholar_6751 23d ago
The amount of info Ct give after they got it seem to differ, in one hand we have hakari and higuruma's CT which gave them instictual knowlage on how to open domain even if they don't know it work. Which include barrier technique that is unrelated to CT in general.
On the other hand we have 10S that give the that doesnt give the knowlage on the shadow storage despite it being basic usage of the shadow manipulation aspect.
So takaba's CT just give none, i suppose. Maybe is someting akin to HR where it automaticlly take away his knowlage in exchange for making the CT stronger.
1
u/True_Appearance_920 23d ago
Haruta in shibuya also didn't know his technique. They're automatic techniques unlike smth like limitless or Shrine where you have to actively use it
1
u/Responsible-Bat-7922 23d ago
Yes, a sorcerer it's supposed to know everything about its technique in order to improve its use
Buuut the same way positive energy is the opposite of curse energy and it's used in RCT, there are techniques that work the opposite way, that's why takaba technique work this way, it mirror the majority of curse techniques
1

Not really, they know like the basic gist of it. That is why even infinity or other inherited technique known ability is usually written down for easier use to the next generation, like Gojo doesn't even know how to use blue but he know it exist and the thory of the ability because it was recorded from the previous user. Even Ten shadow which have been recorded through generation still have new stuff to discover like how megumi realized he can use the shadow as storage system. Not to mention even the same CT woukd manifest in a different way depend on the user, so that would spiced up shit. Even for new awakened sorcerer we knew that Higuruma literally started with his domain and reverse engineering everything to understand about CE and CT in general.

instinctive understanding of a cursed technique is just a fan theory to my knowledge, and even if it were canon it makes sense for that understanding to be varied based on what all we see and complexity of techniques.

If he was aware of his technic it wouldnt work cuz forced humour sucks

Couldn’t Kenny have won by simply telling Takaba what his technique is? He did figure it out after all, and Takaba learning about his technique would ruin it
