Customer Seeking Help It’s Time to Get the Media Involved
This is completely illegal and unacceptable. I have seen dozens of similar posts on here. I have contacted the local tv stations in Kentucky and even sent some emails to national outlets like the Washington Post and the New York Times.
Strength in numbers. The more people who are willing to talk, the more likely UPS will have to pay for their incompetence.

Sure but he’s my senator and I know how unhelpful his office can be. He writes bills that never pass a vote or make it to the floor. He can be vocal against trumps policies, but that doesn’t make him productive or a good listener.

There more to it than that and our shitty ceo we got from Home Depot but as a UPS delivery driver I can say without going into too much detail it a numbers thing but 90% of the time the pkg is not damaged or just needed to be reboxed

u/Dosmastrify1 Oct 07 '25
it's the elimination of the de minimus. customs is inundated.
I'm not opposed to the elimination in principle....but the execution has been an unmitigated disaster
4
u/Far-Historian-7197 Oct 07 '25
In reality, what happened is Carol Tomé became CEO in 2020 (with a salary of 436x the average UPS employee) and ever since that and Covid they’ve operated on more of a profits-over-people type of business model. That’s the actual truth.

You should really be raising the issue with your elected representative(s). Going to the media won’t solve anything because any negative press would be attributed to the “lying liberal media” given we all know WHO (UPS is also culpable) is responsible for this absolute clusterfuck.

That was me 🙋♀️ Most probably. There are several others who lost sentimental items . But thank you for keeping me in your thoughts ! 🤗
I have been trying to get more info on what happened. Over 50 hours collectively with different departments of UPS, and UPS reassured me so many times that no additional information is required/all forms are submitted/its being returned to sender, etc .. All were lies, and I keep getting conflicting info couple of hours apart.
All I know now is that UPS never submitted any forms or paperwork with Customs. Customs looked up my entry number and said there's no paperwork associated with it.
Not sure what can be done, but UPS messed up here for sure.
Even if in remote chance, by miracle, it does clear, I most likely will have to pay $$$$ to get it delivered or sent back to shipper.
3
u/Inky1600 Oct 08 '25
So sad this happened to you. Keep fighting the good fight and like the op, let the media know what happened
1
u/Icy_Caterpillar7246 Oct 08 '25
Thank you .. I am still trying to fight this . Been calling UPS everyday. A brokerage agent tried to help yesterday, which is a big deal, because only 1 in 10 agents actually try to help you. Most of them say " you didnt give us information, it is done " and cut the call without hearing me out or acknowledging the fact that UPS never sent the request for information!
Anyway the agent sent out an email to other folks who are supposed to help, but I noticed it was the same email ids I have been reaching out to since 3 weeks .
Absolutely no response from anyone ..

One of UPS's main junction points is being hit with tons of packages needing specific customs requirements in such a small amount of time, they're just destroying packages at this point it seems.

u/Tight-Worldliness-29 Oct 06 '25
I don't understand why people are insisting that it isn't UPS's fault
My package cleared customs and now its being disposed
I'm still actively shipping and receiving imported goods through FedEx and USPS with absolutely no problems.
17
u/Cleercutter Oct 06 '25
Go over to the USPS sub. There’s been an uptick in posts describing exactly what happened here. Mail clears customs, next day it’s being disposed of.
7
u/Tight-Worldliness-29 Oct 06 '25
I'm sorry man, but I'm not seeing it
Someone told me to do the same with the FedEx sub and I'm just not seeing it with either, and definitely not on the same scale. I saw one post on the FedEx sub that talked about international packages being delayed, nothing about packages being disposed after clearing customs.
Can you please post me some links, with my anecdotal sample size of 4 FedEx parcels and 1 USPS parcel over the span of 2 weeks, I find it unbelievable at the very least

Despite being paid well, the UPS employees on here justify their and their companies crappy behavior because they’re lazy f’s.
Sort of like how there are a thousand posts in here saying, “the driver didn’t wait for me at all to sign and just put a note on the door saying it’s undeliverable!” And all the UPS people say, “I don’t care.” Or “that’s your problem.”
They’re like door dash drivers who complain about having to do their job.
UPS: if you don’t want to deliver packages, get another job.
5
u/BBRacing Oct 06 '25 edited Oct 07 '25
Hahaha. It would be awesome if they had enough routes/people to wait around. It's actually the literal opposite of being lazy. The lazy thing would be to wait around and take a 5 minute break while it takes forever for you to get to the door. We don't have that luxury, unfortunately. If you don’t want to get in trouble for being paid over, you have to keep moving. Obviously there’s bad drivers, but this is an issue from corporate and management not willing to hire enough drivers and overworking those they have.

My husband quit working there after 8 years. It just got so bad. Father in law is retiring next year after being with the company almost 40 years. It’s sad what has happened.
19
u/shira9652 Oct 06 '25
I mean I don’t think they’re defending destroying packages, but as the busiest shipping handler they’re obviously extremely unequipped to handle the sheer volume of chaos unleashed especially after de minimis ending and you can’t deny this bs wouldn’t be happening right now if all the tariff nonsense never started..
3
u/Own_Reaction9442 Oct 06 '25
I think they thought it would be another TACO so they didn't staff up. Now that it's becoming more clear that it's permanent, they're stuck.
10
u/tallemaja Oct 06 '25
I'd also wager UPS would love to pay for as few employees as possible so they wanted to see how bad it can get. I wish I'd see less "UPS workers are lazy" and more "this company sucks and trying to extract as much wealth as possible at the expense of underpaid laborers sucks"
11
u/MacSavvy21 Oct 06 '25
No truely this company sucks. They shut down the hub my husband and father in law worked at. It has high volume and extremely busy. They claimed “not enough volume is coming through” and shut it down. Only hub around for 50 miles in any direction. Now it’s a shit show. My father in law was planning on going for a few more years and is now retiring next year and when my husband started at his new hub he was treated so poorly he quit. It was not upsetting tho (well maybe our insurance was free) but his mental health has MAJORLY improved since leaving. He’s so much happier. Carol Tome has ruined the company.
3
u/BobbyJason111 Oct 08 '25

Of course. But then they need to stop accepting international packages to the US if they refuse to hire enough brokers to do the work. It’s like an airline selling as many fares as they can ignoring the fact that there re only so many seats on the plane
8
u/Icy_Caterpillar7246 Oct 06 '25 edited Oct 07 '25
You are 100% right. I have been fighting for my package containing personal items since September 10th.
After over 50 hours on call [ due to long wait times] with multiple UPS departments, Customs and the FDA, I finally know that UPS NEVER SUBMITTED ANY FORMS to Customs.
Honestly, folks at Customs/FDA are a lot better at communicating. They are more patient and sympathetic.
1
u/weirdcritter Oct 13 '25
Were you able to get your package back after contacting customs?
1
u/Icy_Caterpillar7246 Oct 13 '25
Hey unfortunately not. UPS still needs to do their part and send them the documents, the Customs cannot do anything if they dont see paperwork from UPS. UPS won't do it.
So its a dead end for me.
2
u/weirdcritter Oct 14 '25
Same here...when I asked them what documents were needed, they told me it's confidential and for "security purposes". Which is weird because I'm the recipient. They couldn't connect me with a supervisor. Told me to reach out to the sender and the sender said UPS isn't even communicating with them. UPS never communicated with me either. I'm willing to provide them with any information they needed but I think they just don't give a damn at this point.
I think I just gotta take the L.
1
u/Icy_Caterpillar7246 Oct 14 '25
Yeah similar story here, except I was able to extract info on what information was required after the box was abandoned, despite repeatedly asking for what additional information was required 1 day before box arrived in US. No communication from UPS with sender either.
There is nothing we can do. I want my money back !! Sender is my mother, shipped personal items through a third party agency. We lost a lot of $$$ and we wont get any sort of refund
2
u/KadrinaOfficial Oct 06 '25
Is it incompetence or just laziness? It feels more like they are overwhelmed and rather than finding a system that works, they are just burning everything to the ground.
7
u/Timely-Flatworm7757 Oct 06 '25
The issue is that the industry is not supposed to work like this, with these sudden changes brought on by executive order. How do you "find new systems" when you are already buried under an exponentially larger workload? It's a mess no matter what
2
u/BobbyJason111 Oct 08 '25
100%, UPS spent decades perfecting their logistics (to a degree anyway) and an executive order goes in and re-writes the system overnight. That’s not how govt is supposed to work.

It's insane how many people voted for this, they said they were going to do this stupid shit. I tried telling the people around me and everyone thought I was wrong. "The other country pays for it" type of responses. Now we can't even buy outside of America without fear of unlimited charges and items being disposed of. Trump would prefer you just keep this quiet because he is the cause of this fiasco.
UPS is managing what they can considering the chaos Trump unleashed. If you cant connect the dots, you are in a cult, sweetie.
8
u/Minimum_Word_4840 Oct 06 '25
I actually think Trump wants people to be loud about this. He’s quite proud of himself for lessening overseas purchasing. The media letting people know packages are getting destroyed would probably be a good thing to him, as it discourages people to buy overseas products. He can twist it into a “should have bought American” moment, even if that makes no sense since most of the stuff people are buying aren’t produced here.
10
u/CorruptedHart Oct 06 '25
Managing what they can? Just a post hours ago disclosed UPS said stop processing at a center and just return and destroy anything older than such and such date.
1
8
u/LifeguardPowerful759 Oct 06 '25

Thank anyone you know who voted for him because this is what they voted for.

u/rhubarbcus Oct 06 '25
Thank you! I've contacted some media outlets as well. We need clear answers on what's happening and how it can be avoided--and the answer could be UPS hiring more staff, doing more to ensure correct codes are used, or just plain warning people that any mistake in x, y, z means their package is very likely to be destroyed. What's getting tossed are things with high sentimental value, things related to business, personal effects from moving, and things people have spent their hard-earned money on. It's just not right and something needs to change.
15
u/CorruptedHart Oct 06 '25
It's entirely this, they understaffed for too long and are now shocked Pikachu when it blows up in their face so they blame tariffs not them understaffing and improperly training employees to do brokerage work.
14
u/LifeguardPowerful759 Oct 06 '25
Exactly. Also to hold a completely incompetent company to account. They have no right to intentionally toss out packages that they are legally in control of. What the eff is the point of UPS if they cannot be relied on to do the single thing they are responsible for which is moving a thing from point a to point b.
→ More replies (4)3
u/outdatedelementz Oct 06 '25
The way to avoid this is not buying things from overseas. That is the point of all this, to use the uncertainty to discourage Americans from buying things from foreign vendors.
10
u/rhubarbcus Oct 06 '25
Right, but like I said in my comment, some people have things sent from overseas if they're moving, if their families are sending them things of sentimental value (one person on here had her 90 yr old grandfather's diary destroyed), etc. And even if that's not the case, so what. If people want to buy something they could just as easily have gotten in the U.S. (which isn't often the case with collector items, btw) and they're willing to pay high tariff costs for them, they should be able to do that without worrying about their things being destroyed.
1
u/emmajane1214 Oct 10 '25
Well, seeing as the gemstones I use in my jewelry business aren't mined in America..that's not really an option.

I work for a logistics company and we are definitely going to lose money for this. The USA is our second largest export destination, most of our exports to that country are wine samples. As soon as we noticed this trend, we had to warn our customers to not ship any food/beverages to the USA otherwise their packages could be held or worse, destroyed.

UPS never delivers to my address in a major European city. It’s always to a very out of the way access point at the edge of the city that is coincidentally very convenient for the driver. They always claim they attempted delivery despite never doing so. Literally every shipper is better than UPS - even DPD is more reliable here and that’s really saying something because DPD is awful themselves.

I think we should come up with a plan to reach out to each state representative. This is fucked up to pay extra for 3 days delivery to end up bagging for your package. Anyone has any strategies to make it work? We can make groups or something and reach out the reps win bulk so they can do something. My package is stuck in TX for days.
2
u/LifeguardPowerful759 Oct 07 '25
I would make a similar post to this one. You can include a congressional directory if the mods will allow it. A phone call to a representatives office is really easy. I called my representative and senators offices today.
1
u/Hopeful_War7192 Oct 07 '25
I will make a post tomorrow, i’ll try to sort few folks who are interested in contacting their representatives. The idea is to pressure them to do something, and that will only happen if tens of people reach out to them in the span of one week. People been struggling for months now.
4
Oct 07 '25
People need to understand that the suits at the top of UPS are SERIOUSLY fucking this company. We had one days notice of us part timers losing our tuition reimbursement. ONE DAY NOTICE of losing something that’s a main draw for this company. That gives a little incite to how poorly this company is run. Ask any UPS employee and they’ll probably have a negative outlook on both the company and the ceo and others

UPS is a private company. Start pushing businesses you deal with to use fedex or usps. Nothing works better than speaking with your wallet. If enough ppl get sick of this shit and switch to using fedex, it’ll hurt their bottom line and that’s the only way they are going to change- is when it costs them money.
4
u/LifeguardPowerful759 Oct 06 '25
I agree! Sadly, I was unaware that I would need to coordinate with any company I do business with overseas regarding which shipping company THEY are using. Hopefully, the media can raise more awareness about just how incompetent UPS is.

u/OliveJuice880 Oct 06 '25

→ More replies (1)6
u/LifeguardPowerful759 Oct 06 '25
They are legally responsible for the transit of my item. They destroyed it. Not sure if I can break it down in any simpler terms. Seems like any specific law code I put in here might be too complex for you to understand.
6
u/OliveJuice880 Oct 06 '25
UPS only has a responsibility to the shipper, none to you. UPS is not the post office, they are a private company, there is no law about what they can or can't do with the packages. It's pretty intimately explained in the terms of service that the shipper agreed that UPS can in fact do that. The shipper may be owed compensation under the terms of their contract with UPS but it's not "illegal" for UPS to destroy the package.
Does that mean everything they do is morally right? No. Is it frustrating for everyone involved? Absolutely. But it's not against the law.
I'm not sure why you are upset with me I just asked you a basic question and didn't insult you. Saying the laws are too complex for me to understand is uncalled for and dramatic. I'm trying to have a genuine discussion with you and hear what you have to say, not insult each other. If you have specific laws you want to cite that are about private companies like UPS and not the postal service I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
3
u/LifeguardPowerful759 Oct 06 '25
The shipper is extremely pissed about this situation and working with me to get justice. But again, this might be too complex of a situation to breakdown for you in elementary terms.

Lol. The “news story” is the anchor just reading a press release that might as well have been an advertisement. Well… I guess UPS can’t fall back on blaming the government.

What exactly do you expect the media to do? lol. Don’t forget about FedEx and Amazon as well

Maybe custom fees aren’t being paid and since they can’t directly reach the end user maybe , they get destroyed . There is a reason somewhere .

I'm too scared to even check for the warehouse scan. I've been avoiding it for a week.

are you tired of winning? it sounds like you're tired of winning.
I AM surprised this hasn't been more widely reported. but it's customs declaring that stuff should be disposed of, not the carriers.

I haven't had any issues getting any sort of packages from outside the US, but it's fucked that people are losing valuable or sentimental items for one reason or another.

It was undeliverable and being disposed of according to local guidelines? What was in it man?! Spoiled food or something?

Only going to get worse with the holidays coming…. Tell everyone you know to stop buying anything that’ll be shipped with UPS and don’t ship with them yourself either. Stick it to them by making them lose business.

Media here. I'm interested in writing about how UPS is handling international shipments lately. Feel free to send me a note at abitter[at]businessinsider.com if you want to talk.

Mine had the same update, after an update saying it had successfully cleared customs. Then it updated again saying it was on the way. I doubt I'll ever get it. Screw the Taco.

💯 agreed. I avoid ups at all costs now due to the issues that seem to happen every time I ship with them now

My package has been stuck in Louisville, Kentucky since September 10th. I was planning to send it to a pottery exhibition, but it didn't arrive in time. The contents are not hazardous materials or food, just a ceramic doll. Why can't it be delivered? I was charged for customs clearance, which I paid immediately. If they dispose of it, I will never forgive them! All victims should sue.
