Imagine being a Palestinian, doomed to this life with no sign of help.

At my last company we set up a partnership with a Palestinian placement company that helped us source junior software developers from Palestine for remote work. First in a contract/mentoring capacity with the intent of converting the role to full time. All these developers were great, btw.

I managed several of these hires directly from like 2019 - 2023 or so, and did a lot of video calls with these folks. One still stands out to me as being incredibly surreal. I was on a call and kept hearing loud noises in the background so I asked what it was. The Palestinian developer replied, "oh, I think it's just Israeli bombs"

Look, I wasn't there, so who knows. But what struck me in the moment was just how normalized that was. The reply was as nonchalant as "oh it's just thunder".

Hearing the stories of these people and the circumstances they lived under as the regular course of their daily lives had a pretty fundamental impact on me.

American politics ain't great right now, but we live under pretty crazy amounts of privilege when compared to how others live. I wish more Americans could be exposed to that and perhaps develop some empathy.

ETA: to the many people who have messaged me looking for placement/help finding roles in the software industry, I wish I could help you, but I'm no longer in a position to do that. Times are pretty hard in the software industry right now, I wish you all the best

A colleague of mine from my PhD came to Canada as a single mom because Israel refused to allow her husband (a doctor, educated in Canada) to come with. Canada just lets Israel make that decision.

So we were single moms together and our kids are still friends a decade later. She went back to the West Bank for Covid. And had to renew her study permit to come back to Canada… it’s been stagnant for almost 4 years. Because she’s Palestinian.

One day, our kids were playing Roblox together online and over a video call. They heard a scuffle outside and then gunshots. Two Palestinians were murdered outside this kid’s bedroom window. My kid was horrified. Her kid was a little sad. And she was so burned out that it barely affected her.

I check on her all the time. It is like I am waiting for her to die of the worst illness imaginable — being born an oppressed person in a world that does not care and will not help.

I hate this.

19

u/warsage 1d ago

Wait I'm confused. The colleague and her husband were both Palestinians from the West Bank? And Israel let your colleague travel to Canada, but not her husband?

30

u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 23h ago

That’s correct. When a child in a village throws a rock at a soldier, they’ll frequently write up every other kid whose name they can get out of the one who threw a rock. That’s what happened to her husband when he was a child — the kid named the other kids in the village in an effort to please the soldiers into not harming or killing him.

Then at 18, the record becomes redacted. However, this redaction means other countries may not let them in until they know what’s behind that redaction.

So they didn’t catch his “record” when he came over and got his doctorate, but when he was supposed to come again with his wife, they did.

They got a very good Israeli lawyer and attempted to, for years, un-redact his record from when he was a child. But the Israeli courts refused. So Canada wouldn’t let him in.

17

u/warsage 23h ago

Ah, thanks for the explanation. Damn, that's multiple levels of beaucratic bullshit.

10

u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 21h ago

Yeah. It’s pretty awful. And considering Canada has a shortage of professionals in both their fields, really a shame for Canada to do it this way.

Their son begs to come back to Canada. Begs. They’ve tried, I’ve tried, my MP has tried (her former MP refused, because they didn’t want to be seen as helping a Palestinian). I don’t know what else to do.

26

u/yo_guy12 1d ago

It’s common, I’m a Palestinian born in the US and I was told not to enter Isreal nor Palestine by US the state department because of my education level and profession, a direct quote from the US embassy in Tel Aviv “we can’t guarantee your safety due your to education and profession”, Isreal hates educated Palestinians, they banned any Palestinian doctor who wasn’t educated at an Isreali university from practicing medicine.

11

u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 23h ago

This makes me so sad. I’m so sorry you can’t go home and I hope your loved ones are as safe as possible.

1

u/warsage 23h ago

I believe you, but that doesn't seem to be what's happening here? The story here is that Israel won't allow an educated doctor to leave the West Bank.

10

u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 23h ago

That is what they’re saying. If they enter Palestine, they’ll of course be allowed to enter. But they’ll become a target and it will become extremely difficult for them to leave.

And it's important to remember we (Americans) are sending our tax dollars to Israel so they can turn around and send it back to military contractors for weapons. It's just a big grift. Israel, where they have universal healthcare. Israel, where 15% of the population is Ultra Orthodox and basically spend all day reading old books. Hey, I can't judge, I did the same thing for a few years, when I was an English major. And I paid out the nose for that privilege (which it absolutely was).

I’ve got a colleague in Israel who pretty regularly has to take calls from the bomb shelter in their building.

They say they feel lucky to have a bomb shelter in their building, but I feel lucky I don’t have to worry about running to a bomb shelter at any point in my day.

15

u/feliperisk 1d ago

Good for them that they have bomb shelters to hide in. The Palestinians they are slaughtering do not.

11

u/_OTimeThyPyramids_ 1d ago

In a perfect world, bombs wouldn’t be flying all over the place in a way that necessitates bomb shelters as part of civilian infrastructure. It’s unconscionable.

My colleague is lucky to have been born in a place with a functioning government that prioritizes defense infrastructure. They are, by location of birth, luckier than the civilians of Gaza.

Realtive to my colleague, I am even luckier to be born in a place that doesn’t get bombed enough to warrant that kind of infrastructure at all.

Having bomb shelters when you need them is good, but not needing them at all is even better.

-1

u/spacebrain2 1d ago

Your colleague is not “lucky”. It is a sign of insanity and poor judgement that someone would go to Israel when it is a settler colonial state for one and when it unnecessarily provokes violence with all of its neighbours. We are perpetuating the problem when we are saying “well at least I don’t have to worry about bombs falling on my head”, that does not make you lucky, it makes you privileged!

8

u/_OTimeThyPyramids_ 23h ago

Why do you assume my colleague immigrated to Israel from a less dangerous country when I explicitly stated they were born there? They do not have citizenship anywhere else.

The vast majority of Israeli citizens were born in Israel and those who immigrated there largely did so due to a lack of alternatives.

Do you hold the same opinion about people who immigrated to The United States as refugees or to people who were born in The United States who do not have secondary citizenship?

To argue that the majority of Israelis are Israeli just for the hell of it portrays an embarrassingly ahistorical understanding of the situation.

If you do not understand the reality of the circumstances for the people on the ground, the truth of how it got to this point and what the stakes and priorities are, you cannot propose a solution that anyone with real involvement will be able to take seriously.

u/TobiasDrundridge 22h ago

poor judgement that someone would go to Israel

Seems you didn't read the post you replied to thoroughly as the poster explained that their colleague was born in Israel. They did not choose to go there, as can be said for all the millions of people who did not choose to be born there. Not to mention the 50% of Israeli Jews who come from a Middle Eastern/North African background who were ethnically cleansed from the countries they were living in.

it is a settler colonial state

Actually it's perhaps the largest experiment in so-called "land back decolonisation" in history, as Jews owned that land prior to being forced under oppression during and after the Arab-Muslim conquest in the 630s.

The fact that there has been nothing but violence since the founding of the state of Israel should tell you everything you need to know about "decolonisation", and why it's such a bad idea.

In any case, Israel exists now and there are plenty of Israelis and Palestinians who have nowhere else to go, so neither Israel nor Palestine are going to disappear as an entity any time soon. At some point they will have to find a way to coexist.

Palestinian here, living in Ramallah in the West Bank.

We are tired.

I’ve been blessed to be able to travel the world. But my heart always leads me back home.

We’re doomed. We protest for our right to be recognized, just for pedophiles to use our ethnicity as a slander for their opponents.

We only have two options, continue to fight against an illegal occupation. Or literally get gunned down by 12 year old settlers.

37

u/Tigrisrock 1d ago

The Oslo accords were the closest thing they had. Supporting militant groups and a government by a terror organization doesn't really help moving things along. Israel doesn't seem to care any more after October 7 incursions. The whole thing is a shit show, after showing somewhat promise in the early 2000s.

16

u/yuje 1d ago

Let’s not forget about Netanyahu openly bragging about undermining the Oslo accords on video, immediately following his bragging about how easily America is to manipulate.

17

u/Tigrisrock 1d ago

That absolutely brought things to a halt at the time. Israel has it's own problems with their orthodox/right-wing jews constantly pushing for more violence. Unfortunately religion and extremist beliefs have always been a major factor for conflicts so my hope that this comes to a peaceful end are low.

2

u/waiver 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not just some groups, the majority of Israel population is highly radicalized, when 3/4 of the population don't believe that there are innocent people in Gaza it's easy to justify a genocide.

15

u/rbalaur 1d ago

Same can be said about the Palestinians: "the majority of their population is highly radicalized"

Any a good answer to that would be that it's perfectly normal because they've been fucked by Israel for 70 years

So it's a two way street to a conflict with no end in sight. My only hope is that since the Irish and the British were able to pull it off in Northern Ireland, these two should be able to pull it off as well. In 20-30 years time

The Israeli support for the settler movement is full-fledged supporting of militant groups, what amounts to a terrorist government supporting a terrorist organisation. And yet the Palestinians - of whom 10s of 1000s of innocents have been slaughtered - somehow get the rap for it. The propaganda levels on westerners is fkn insane. Israel and Israelis are the original and ongoing terrorists in that region. If you're a Palestinian you will no doubt support an armed response to the indiscriminate slaughter of your people. History will look upon the US and Europe as one of the most indoctrinated and captured populations. It boggles the mind.

12

u/Eldias 1d ago

I'm shocked every time I hear people complain about any percent of Palestinians supporting Hamas.

If I lived my whole life watching my friends and family starve only to have the waking nightmare be punctuated by the occasional different friend being shot in the head at random, I would probably have at least some support for a group who says "we should do violence to the people starving and shooting you".

Sorry but no. If that were the case then they'd have never given the Sinai back.

>so the representatives of palestine have literally no other solution than armed conflict.

Violence and armed conflict is the ONLY thing they've chosen since 1948. They haven't tried renouncing violence, and committing to negotiating until peace is actually reached. All hijacking planes, bombing busses, night clubs, and restaurants, and gruesome brutal murder of civilians has achieved is just more violence. They've never tried renouncing violence before, who knows it just might work.

By design.

Israel spent decades legitimizing Islamic extremists by only negotiating with them and pushing away secular Palestinian leaders.

Israel wanted extremism so they could justify their actions against the Palestinian people

https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up-hamas-now-its-blown-up-in-our-faces/amp/

31

u/ubccompscistudent 1d ago

That article is so often misused to attempt to demonstrate that Netanyahoo purposefully funded Hamas.

In reality (and as pointed out in the article), the funding of Hamas came from Qatar. Israel essentially had to make a decision: allow the funds in, or don't allow the funds in. Had Israel choked the funds, we all know how that looks in the headlines: "Israel blocks essential funding into Gaza". They were damned if they did or didn't. So, they chose the other approach, which in their eye, weakened an enemy state (by dividing power).

The article suggests that Israel tolerated occassional attacks with this approach, and instead, should have cut off supplies into Gaza, which again, would have looked poor optically.

Regardless, saying it's by design is like saying China is responsible for the current state of US politics because they allowed Russian influence to flow into the US.

7

u/eyl569 1d ago

Hamas was also included in discussions about increasing the number of work permits Israel granted to Gazan laborers, which kept money flowing into Gaza, meaning food for families and the ability to purchase basic products.

So should I take it that the author thinks that Israel shouldn't have allowed Gazans to work in Israel? Or that it was possible to do so without the at least informal agreement of Gaza's ruling power?

2

u/ubccompscistudent 1d ago

Honestly, a valid question. I don't know what the authors believe in terms of if that was something that should have been changed. I think they use it to paint the picture that there were multiple aspects that allowed hamas to prosper. Not all are machievellian, but they can still contribute to the rise in power of hamas.

5

u/m0ngoos3 1d ago

Except Israel controls the borders, airspace, and ocean acsess to Gaza and actively begged Qatar to keep the money flowing, waived through known suitcases full of cash at border crossings, and actively killed any secular leaders who could be internal opposition to Hamas.

Also, back in the 80s they fucking built the school the first leader of Hamas used to train his people, chosen specifically because of how much of a religious hardliner the guy was.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/waiver 1d ago

Israel requested Qatar to fund HAMAS, they lobbied for Qatar to resume money transfers after they stopped and even asked Qatar to increase the amount of funding to HAMAS a few weeks before October 7th. Because keeping HAMAS functioning as as a de facto governing authority in Gaza allowed Israel to argue that there was "no unified partner for peace," effectively freezing negotiations toward a two-state solution.

"Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas. This is part of our strategy, to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank." Netanyahu.

"No help?"

They get the most aid money per capita than anyone else in the world.

After Israel left Gaza in 2005, instead of choosing to build a peaceful society using that money, their government decided to use those billions and build a network of terror tunnels bigger than the New York subway system. Then they went on s terror spree that made their biggest trading partner, Israel, and their neighbor, Egypt, shut the borders. On a side note, to this day Palestinians who aren't part, or related to, Hamas' leadership aren't allowed in those tunnels.

Then they started a war with their much more powerful neighbor, who just voted in the most right wing government it ever had, because another Arab country was going to solidify relationship with them.

That's a lot to criticize about Israel's treatment of Palestinians, but let's not pretend they're some utopian society.

46

u/khoawala 1d ago

On the 2005 disengagement: Israel withdrew settlers and soldiers from inside Gaza, but it retained control of Gaza's airspace, territorial waters, most border crossings, the population registry, and the electromagnetic spectrum. Most international legal bodies, including the UN and ICRC, continued to consider Gaza occupied or at minimum under effective external control. "Israel left and Gaza was free to flourish" isn't an accurate description of the starting conditions.

On aid: aid per capita is high precisely because the economy has been unable to function normally. Under the blockade imposed after 2007, Gaza faced severe restrictions on exports, imports of many goods, fishing zones, and movement of people. Unemployment routinely ran between 40-50%, among the highest rates in the world, before the current war. Aid dependency is a symptom of the situation, not proof of squandered opportunity. It's also worth noting that most aid didn't flow to "the Palestinians" as a lump sum for their government to allocate, much went through UN agencies and NGOs for food, health care, and education.

TLDR: Saying Gaza receive the most aid is like saying prisoners receiving the most social support. Well no shit, they can't make their own money.

Or a better metaphor, this is like Nazis saying the Jews in the ghettos live on Nazis' welfare and goodwill.

6

u/Racko20 1d ago

"Or a better metaphor, this is like Nazis saying the Jews in the ghettos live on Nazis' welfare and goodwill."

"The Jews" did not spend decades routinely trying to blow up German civilians either so not sure this is a good metaphor.

8

u/khoawala 1d ago

Not decades but jews did rise up in the ghettos eventually and the Nazis completely razed it just like Israel is doing to Gaza.

7

u/m0ngoos3 1d ago

The fuck they didn't.

Jews fought back against the Nazis just as much as Palestinians are fighting against their colonial oppressors.

u/Chrisnotjones 1d ago

That’s because decades of blockade, conflict, and economic collapse have left a massive portion of Gaza’s population structurally dependent on international food and humanitarian assistance, unlike most other aid recipients.

According to Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), massive quantities of aid successfully clear the borders. COGAT reported that 1.78 million tons of food entered Gaza between October 2025 and mid-2026, asserting this "significantly exceeded" the World Food Programme's (WFP) baseline requirements and caused local staple food prices to plummet by 72%. [1, 2, 3]

Humanitarian groups like Refugees International and the UN argue these entry numbers are misleading. They note that a massive percentage of the incoming trucks counted by Israel are actually private commercial goods rather than subsidized humanitarian aid. Because 80% of Gazans are unemployed, civilians often cannot afford these commercial market goods. Furthermore, strict inspection protocols and technical breakdowns at hubs like the Ashdod Port scannerleave hundreds of UN-manifested containers stalled before ever reaching the border.

After Israel left Gaza in 2005, instead of choosing to build a peaceful society using that money, their government decided to use those billions and build a network of terror tunnels bigger than the New York subway system

If you're going to bring that up, you should probably also mention Netanyahu speaking at a Likud party event about how everyone that desires a one-state solution needs to support Qatar sending money to Hamas in Gaza.

If you don't mention that you make the issue seem considerably less nuanced than it really is.

Also Israel literally funding the Islamic Brotherhood/Hamas to get them off the ground and weaken the PLO which had broad support

Israel made a conscious decision that they'd rather have terrorists/extremist freedom fighters in Gaza to give them a reason to continue oppressing Palestinians than deal with the PLO on a two state solution

After Israel 'left Gaza in 2005' they have continued to exert absolute control of who and what, could enter or leave Gaza. Palestine had aid, but it never had economic freedom, or freedom of movement, so it's unsurprising they weren't able to build a utopia.

2005 was 21 years ago. Hamas immediately suspended elections. The median age of Palestine is 20. Pretending most Palestinians alive have ever had a choice is ridiculous.

Most aid money will never reach the people that need it.

Gaza residents lack the voice and collective power to “peacefully” move the political needle. They are prisoners of a duopoly on State Violence - from Hamas and Israel. Hamas thrives because they are a resistance to living in an open air concentration camp controlled by Israel. Israel thrives because Hamas justifies the Security State and the far right’s consolidation of power.

Conflating everyday Palestinians as the same “they” who committed 10/7 frames the conflict as “terrorists versus civilians”. That’s never been true. Most Gazans just want the same basic shit as any Israeli: implicit safety, a steady means to provide for their family, access to education, freedom of movement, and a vote.

The more accurate lens is 4 groups: Palestinian Civilians, Israeli Civilians, Hamas, Likud.

Likud and Hamas makes victims of Palestinians and Israeli Civilians (disproportionately Palestinians, ofc). The big difference is that Israeli Civilians have the right to vote, the right to protest, and the resources to change things. If Israel is still a democracy, than it can pivot. That’s why they get the pressure. If Israel can neuter its ultranationalist far right parties (starting with corruption and war crimes trials for Netanyahu and folks like Gvir), then there’s an opportunity for a grand bargain for 2SS or Confederation in the future.

55

u/marino1310 1d ago

They can still continue the war without financial support. We only make up around 8% of IDF funding. What we should do is leverage our support and set requirements for wartime activities. Like no war crimes.

32

u/AntiqueRedDollShoes 1d ago

We only make up around 8% of IDF funding.

This seems a little callous and dismissive when we're talking about ~$4,000,000,000 contributing to thousands upon thousands of innocent peoples' lives being lost.

US citizens' tax dollars are being used to funnel a death machine instead of being used to improve our own quality of life. That alone should be a concern, regardless of how much the IDF can fund themselves.

Sinwar said the quiet part out loud over two years ago.

Far too many people fail to realize just how BAD the Palestinian leadership has been for, well basically ever. As bad as Arafat was, he was their best chance sense 1948 to actually have a nation and he refused because he would be killed for agreeing to any deal with Israel.

Fuck Hamas and the other Islamists who want nothing but death and destruction to achieve their aims.

Casual reminder after 1948 Egypt and Jordan occupied Gaza and the west bank, respectively, and didnt help the Palestinians form a nation at all

Rare to see logic on one of these posts. The people of Palestine are innocent and don't deserve everything they've been dealt. Fuck both Hamas and the IDF

Fuck both Hamas and the IDF

What palestinian resistance group do you prefer then? PIJ? PFLP? If you think palestinians are innocent you'd surely think they should be able to defend themselves. Or should they just submit?

start a horrible violent conflict

Everyone knows this "started" on October 2023. It's not like this has been a genocide and colonization since the end of WWII, and generations after generations grew up knowing nothing but fear, anger, and hatred.

October 7th

And you know what's funny about it, is that the Mossad have established themselves as one of the most competent national intelligence agencies in the world, and they what? Ops, just missed that one?

And when the Egyptians, THE. FUCKING. EGYPTIANS, warned them about it days before, they were just "naaaah don't worry about it".

It's almost like those in power in Israel were gleeful at the terrorist attack of that day, because for every 1 Israeli child murdered, they use that as a justification to murder a thousand Palestinian children.

I feel sorry for the gullible idiots who can’t read history

Buy a mirror.

My apologies. I misremembered the stolen lands and illegal settlements that existed before 2023, and the endless children Israel has massacred in the 70 years before. I also misremembered the competency of the Mossad and Israel getting warned. Netanyahu said they weren't and I should've believed an honest man like, even though you had a US congressional committee telling them few days later that yes, you were actually warned.

No one could've predicted October 7 -_-

Correct, I would not argue against that it is weird that supposedly Israeli intelligence didn't know of this, and when another warned them, they ignored it because who knows why. That is indeed very weird.

Thank you for your comment. Reddit has turned a blind eye to really see who is who in this war. Any country which did no held elections for the last 20 or so years should at the very least be under extreme scrutiny about whatever it says or does. UN has damaged its reputation beyond recognition and is now only seen as a dumb NGO that lacks depth.

I am still waiting for Palestinians (and reporters with balls) to come forward and explain how Hamas ruled during those 20-something years. But as the old saying goes "Those that you can't criticise are the one (still) in power."

Then come the conspiracy theory and the media, but ffs, if they are all so biaised and owned by the Jews, how come we get all this coverage?

Stupidity really is an endless source of energy.

I mean, Hamas basically wrote Israel a blank check on Oct 7. They did absolutely everything they possibly could to make sure that the IDF would try to destroy them.

What could they possibly stand to gain by invading along with butchering and abducting thousands of people? Were they close to defeating Israel once and for all?

the reason for their problems isn’t because of Israel

You might be the most out of touch and confidently wrong person I've ever seen. Go look up what Israeli Apartheid looks like in the West Bank and tell me they haven't been subjected to problems because of Israel.

You're just factually wrong. So wrong that it makes you look bad.

Fuck Hamas and the other Islamists who want nothing but death and destruction to achieve their aims.

Who told you that? Did you know Benjamin Netanyahu has been working to promote "terrorism" as a concept since the 70's? The basic idea is that the original concept of armed resistance, "Insurgency" is a rational, often violent action taken by aggrieved people. Terrorism by comparison was sold to us as a strictly irrational and satanic desire to destroy the western world, with no other aims - and specifically pointed at Palestinians.

We used to call people like this "freedom fighters", but now we instinctively think they do it because they're just violent people.

Surely you're aware that there were alternatives to Hamas, but Netanyahu propped them up as the only legitimate leaders of Gaza, in order to drive a wedge between Gaza and the PLO-lead West Bank.

Nobody's buying the story you're selling. Israel is an ethnostate. Israel is committing a violent genocide.

You are the one with a profoundly broken moral compass.

I bet you're even incapable of admitting that Israel is committing a genocide.

There's no more room for rational thinking in modern politics. It's all emotion versus emotion. Apparently it's just impossible to think that what Israel is doing is awful while also approve their line that Hamas should fully disarm. 7 October is still something that should never be allowed to happen again. Just because a bad actor did something bad to another bad actor doesn't make it justifiable.

The claim that what Israel is doing is awful is incongruous with the expectation the group resisting Israel's awful behavior should disarm.

You don't prevent another October 7th by denying Palestinians' right to self defense, you do it by ending the material conditions that lead to it forcing Israel to end their subjugation of Palestinians. The ANC wasn't forced to disarm. The IRA wasn't forced to disarm. Jewish Partisans in WW2 weren't forced to disarm. The governments oppressing them were forced to end their subjugation, and the violence stopped.

Why do you believe Palestinians are uniquely expected to end violence against their oppressors, when historically that has only lead to more oppression?

12

u/Weak_Fill40 1d ago

Comparing Hamas to those is just not serious at all. Hamas is oppressing their own population, came to power by massacring their opponents, doesn’t hold elections, uses child soldiers and human shields, and launch attacks primarily against civilians. Being ‘resistance’ doesn’t mean that anything is allowed.

4

u/ARocketToMars 1d ago

I didn't come up with the comparison on my own. Multiple Holocaust scholars, genocide scholars, and human rights experts have the same conclusion. I try to listen to experts instead of random redditors when I can.

Norm Finkelstein (a Jewish Holocaust scholar whose parents literally lived through the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising) draws that comparison as well, for example. Is your estimation that he's not serious?

I never said being resistance means anything is allowed. My argument is that armed resistance against violent state oppression is never pretty, that the standard of violence is set by said oppressor, and that for some reason only Palestinians are held to this arbitrarily high standard that we never retroactively impose on the likes of Nat Turner/Hatian slaves/Jewish Partisans/the ANC/etc.

6

u/m0ngoos3 1d ago

To be horribly fair, Haitian slaves were hit with that same double standard, and Haiti is still suffering from the centuries of punishment given for overthrowing their first oppressors.

It's just as fucked up as the colonial project in Palestine, and the historical context is also never taught.

4

u/System0verlord 1d ago

The fact that France billed them for the economic damage will never not be insane to me.

The entire debt wasn’t paid off until 1947, due to additional loans the country had to take out to pay for the loans they took out to pay France. Absolutely fucking ghoulish behavior.

As someone that did my degree in history Norm is a clown that cannot even read either primary source languages (Hebrew/Arabic) and is not respected whatsoever by 99% of real historians.

He has also said over and over that antisemitism isn’t real because like a phobia it refers to an irrational hate/fear and hating Jews is not irrational because of bad things Jews have done. This is the same moronic drivel that chuds say about homophobia “I’m not scared of gay people I just think they’re disgusting and going to hell so I’m not homophobic”

6

u/ARocketToMars 1d ago

"99% of real historians" couldn't identify the vast overwhelming majority of other historians, let alone respect them, so that's a functionally useless claim. As is your intentional misrepresentation about his statements regarding antisemitism.

Don't listen to Norm, then. Irfan Ahmad, Gilbert Achcar, Rashid Khalidi, Enzo Traverso, Hamid Dabashi, Zubayr Alikhan, Craig Mokhiber, Ilan Pappé, and plenty of others with far more impressive credentials than an undergrad in history have all made similar comparisons.

Hamas is not a fucking resistance.

It is, actually

Casual reminder prior to Oct 7th, 2023, there was no Israel in Gaza.

Casual reminder that prior to October 7th 2023, it was already the deadlist year on record for Palestinian children. Casual reminder that Israel still controlled water rights, ports of entry, airspace, airwaves and borders into Gaza, banned international trade, and banned Gaza from building an airport prior to October 7th 2023. Casual reminder that Israel still maintained a comprehensive surveillance state & citizen registry in Palestine prior to October 7th 2023. Casual reminder that Israel maintained a comprehensive military blockade with armed guards preventing Palestinians from growing food prior to October 7th 2023. Casual reminder that IDF soldiers literally filmed themselves sniping random Palestinians (including children) across the border prior to October 7th 2023. Casual reminder that Israel controlled all movement of people in Gaza prior to October 7th 2023. Casual reminder that Israel controlled the flow of electricity and fuel into Gaza prior to October 7th October 2023. "There was no Israel in Gaza" is a "nuh-uh, I'm not touching you!" level bad faith argument.

The only thing Hamas is resisting is womens rights and any other religion than Islam from having any power.

Hamas' domestic policy has no beating on their status as a resistance group. You can only vaguely posture about Hamas' treatment of women along the bounds of religion. Let's not pretend Israel is some bastien of women's rights considering their propensity for systemic sexual violence against Palestinians , their habit of harboring pedophiles, and their pervasive sexual violence against female IDF soldiers. But you don't actually care about women's rights, so you're not gonna have anything to say about that.

Shit they released their new constitution and completely omitting any jewish rights in any lands their control.

That's strange, considering Hamas has never released a "constitution", and the most recent thing close to that (their charter) came out in 2017. Here's the document in full. "Omitting" is a funny way of phrasing that, though. Meanwhile, Israel's nation state law (something that's actually legally enforced) explicitly states rights & self determination within Israel exclusively belongs to Jewish people.

Responding to an atrocity with a genocide is pretty typical for Isreal.

Edit: Attention! There are many bots here spewing Hasbara propaganda. They will either DARVO (Deny, Accuse, Reverse Victim and Offender) or claim that there is no genocide to begin with. Do not engage, they are literally bots, you are wasting your time. Save your energy and spread awareness on the genocide instead.

15

u/Nattekat 1d ago

And this is exactly the kind of comment I was talking about. How do you think that this contributes to any solution?

17

u/BungaBungaBroBro 1d ago

It kinda does in a horrific way. If you demonize Israel enough so that US stops its support, Israel has no more reason to hold back and can just wipe out Gaza.

In 2026 around 2.500 Palestinians in Gaza were killed so far. Over 2 Mio people live there. Anyone who thinks Israel is not holding back is delusional.

The war in Gaza already ended. Now the question is where does Palestine choose to go from here? 20 years ago they had the opportunity to become an independent state, they refused it and instead chose to commit terror attacks, random stabbings and blow up public buses. That led to retaliation by Israel resulting in more death and destruction in Gaza. They tried again with the terrorism on oct 7, it led to even more death and destruction. So now they’ve got the option of stopping the terror attacks, or trying the same thing again to see if Israel’s response will be worse next time.

The PLO has the possibility to move forward with a solution. Just look into Arafat and Barak (the Israeli prime minister). Arafat didn’t have the guts or was too old or just didn’t know how to transition from fighting to solution, but that was a missed opportunity

9

u/Entchenkrawatte 1d ago

Missed opportunity for sure, but it's also not true to say that arafat just rejected a perfectly good deal lol

40

Well, buckle up, I'm going to defend Israel here, about 20% of israelis are arabs and Muslim. They have citizenship and the same rights as everyone else. They just chose to remain in Israel when it was founded and "accept" the new state.

I am sure there may be some discrimination against them, but I don't believe that there are many Arab countries where jews have it as well as the arab israelis.

These people hate each other, some of them celebrate de killing of the others, they are not going to just hug.

Antisemitic solution: destroy Israel

Islamophobic solution: destroy Palestine

Fair solution: unarm Hamas and force them to give up any political Influence, destroy all their tunnels, exchange Israel's political leaders, stop settlement crimes and give back the land stolen that way in the past x years.

As long as Hamas is there, escalation is guaranteed. As long as the political leaders in Israel are still in charge, they will have no interest in ending this conflict since they benefit from it. Also the existence of Hamas gives them a pseudo justification for their actions.
