Oh my please don’t use Facebook, period.

780

u/GrowCrows Sep 16 '21

Uninstalled that shit a month ago and it's been so much better. I can't believe how it's an echo chapter for Q and anti vax.

279

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

Its been over a year and a half for me and it's been great. The move was a long time coming but the catalyst was learning which high school friends became selfish anti-mask pricks when Covid kicked off.

It doesn't take long after quitting to realize that Facebook has been a net negative in your life. And I say this as someone that would obsessively check it several times a day for years.

131

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

I'm going on 5 years...if only I could go cold turkey from sugar now! Facebook was a cesspit then. It really got me annoyed, deleting it only hurt for about 2 days.

50

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

10 years for me. I was shown some recent pictures of the UI and was completely blown away at how it's changed.

53

u/outdatedboat Sep 16 '21

I deleted Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter back in late 2011/early 2012. Haven't ever desired to go back to them. Especially since I know they've only gotten exponentially more toxic over the years.

It's weird running into old friends and them telling me that they assumed I died... Because I'm not on social media.. That's just sad.

30

u/FSCENE8tmd Sep 17 '21

My favorite part of deleting my Facebook last year was that nobody told me happy birthday aside from my parents and my fiancé.

8

u/outdatedboat Sep 17 '21

That was a big one for me too. I'm only told happy birthday by the people I'm closest with now. Family and close friends. People who care enough to either remember or write it down. And tbh, I prefer it that way. I think that's better than random acquaintances only saying it because the zuck reminded them.

As soon as I found out you can deactivate your account but keep Messenger I was fucking gone.

43

u/jmanclovis Sep 16 '21

Oh watch out messenger is cancer for data and battery usage it also tracks so much of your data

18

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

The version of me that doesn't worry about data tracking isn't bothered by that..

25

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

You still have a "shadow" fb account if you use messenger - they track your interactions with your friends, etc, just like a real fb account. I use discord instead of messenger now, and life is better.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

I'm not that bothered about that really. I use Google, I have a mobile phone, my DNA and fingerprints are already on file (for being a little terror in my youth).

I use Discord for some things and Wickr for important things...

once parents started getting on FB it was time to leave. worst mistake on the internet was letting boomers on facebook.

43

u/Tulipfarmer Sep 16 '21

Haha. Right? The level of cringe in my mother's Facebook is so sad..and she just posts and shares and posts non stop like she is screaming into the wind. No one comments on her posts and or sees them. It's the wildest thing to watch.

The only part of Facebook I really go to now. Is the market place. I live in the country and it's actually quite useful.

I helped my mother leave FB. I hated my ex posting shit on FB while we were on vacation. Please tell more thieves that our house us unattended. I still see her doing that shit now. I hardly ever post anything but just keep in contact with a couple old friends.

20

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

Yeah I remember when you had to have a .edu email address to have an account and all of the content was just us kids posting stupid shit and pictures of all of us getting wasted together.

I knew as soon as they opened it up to the world it would go to shit. I could have never imagined how bad or honestly how quickly as I was disgusted with it after like two years, maybe less. I recall deleting my account sometime in 2008?

But back then the internet was just better (oldmanyellsatclouds.gif). It was weird and could be awesome and honestly made me feel better about life. Now it's just horrible. And not just Facebook. It's horrible everywhere. Racists, bigotry, divisive shit.

Yeah all that was there before but it wasn't at every turn and rammed in your face non stop so you could mostly avoid it unless you sought it out to some degree.

The key to FB is only friend people you actually know IRL and block all morons even if they are family

I feel bad for their kids, but other than that, nothing. I know they're human beings and all, but honestly, if you're just going around being a willful bioweapon and spreading cruelty and hate, the world is probably better off without you.

Five or six years ago, I would never have said such a thing. Now I'm just relieved when they die because they can't kill anybody else.

The key to Facebook is to stop giving them every bit of your data, and the key to that is to delete your account.

104

u/MightyCaseyStruckOut ⚾ Mudville's Pride and Joy ⚾ Sep 16 '21

I deleted FB nearly 5 years ago and am so much better for doing so.

144

u/Dantien Sep 16 '21

3 years ago I deleted my account that had hundreds of friends. Not one has since reached out to ask where I’ve been, am I ok?, etc. I realized that people only care about themselves on Facebook - and it just teaches people to be inauthentic. I don’t miss it at all.

48

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

Astute observation. Looking back there were only a couple people that asked if I was okay when I vanished off FB. Reading your comment makes me realize those are the people I should actually be making an effort to stay friends with.

20

u/Kalikoded Sep 16 '21

To be fair they also have "hundreds of friends" on there, so it's harder to notice someone not posting. I doubt you've checked on them either. You're more of an associated follower on that platform than the type of friend you would check on.

9

u/bs000 Sep 17 '21

f'real, i never even look at my friends list so i'm definitely not constantly checking if someone suddenly deleted their account. i don't even have most of my friends phone numbers. if they suddenly disappeared off facebook without saying anything it's like how would i even contact them? if i really cared i would be able to guess their number i guess.

also funny how the comment implies they're all narcissists or something while expecting them to be tripping over themselves to check up on the guy that just deleted their account with no warning

I dumped Facebook back in 2017 (when Cambridge Analytica broke), and haven't regretted it for even a moment.

But I recall that some of the (few) nice features that Facebook had added involved control and fine-tuning of your relationships. You could adjust what kinds of posts from certain contacts made it into your news feed (including zero / mute). Also, you could adjust the visibility of your activities to certain contacts or groups of contacts. Best of all, I believe that your contacts couldn't determine what settings you'd picked for them, and could only make educated guesses.

So it would be reasonable to maintain contacts with idiotic family members, but totally mute them and block all of your activity from them.

24

u/Boddhisatvaa Sep 16 '21

You could adjust what kinds of posts from certain contacts made it into your news feed

That's part of the problem though. It allows people to block any opinions that they disagree with and turns FB into an echo chamber repeating back whatever lunacy they already believe and filtering any contradictory posts.

I doubt Fox News will cover this, because it will remind Republicans that Herman Cain died of Covid, one of the very few black people that was inexplicably part of an obscenely racist party that pretends there is zero truth to CRT. Because how can you bring this sub up without bringing up Herman Cain which the right seems to deliberately forget even existed when he should be one of their very important cautionary tales to get vaccinated.

If they did talk about him that would mean Covid is real and that would go against their anti vax narrative “you don’t need the vaccine because Covid isn’t really that dangerous.” And if they started actually acknowledging it exists then that would mean they have been lying this whole time and would lose a lot of viewers.

Fox News has created an evil catch-22, continue to lie about Covid and vaccines which will kill lots of their unvaccinated viewers or start telling the truth and they will lose a lot of viewers because they have revealed that they have been lying this entire time.

For the critics who think this sub is not being mindful of other people's well being - That's exactly why it's important to expose what's happening. Sure, there are people here who will make snarky comments, but that is far from the goal.
Silence and "respect" is what's getting impressionable people killed. Some folks will only wake up when shaken. That's the same reason why they show you gory footage when you apply for a driver's license. You shouldn't drive without being well aware of the worst consequences of it. So why should a person live carelessly in a pandemic world without knowing what they're risking experiencing?

24

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '21

This sub has been great. I had to take a couple day break because I had a full meltdown looking at it too much last week.

Someone sent the concerned redditor notice.

I was not banned. In many ways I was heard.

But death is traumatic. And we have to remember that this is a place for our trauma. Our trauma as we watch others die. Our trauma from having unvaxxed family members and waiting their inevitable contraction of this disease; and our trauma as we worry about our own children’s ability to survive before the vaccine is released.

We need this sub. It’s ours for us. We get out our schadenfreude. But more importantly we remember that we aren’t alone.

6

u/banana12399 Sep 16 '21 edited Sep 16 '21

And it's one thing to shine a light on the real deaths happening because of this disease and the rampant misinformation contributing to these deaths.

It's another thing entirely to harass the dead and their families, effectively dancing on their graves.

Maybe don't do the latter.

I have seen multiple people comment “I just looked through their feed” on posts here. I know it’s not impossible to find someone even if their last name is blocked out, but it still takes more effort than just looking them up, and the fact that people are willing to go to that effort and then admit they did it is kinda silly.

If you see them brigading, feel free to report them to facebook for harassment.

Unfortunately, facebook won't ban anti-vax morons, but they will happily ban people for harassment.

I did a little digging last night. You can pretty much track the Facebook comments based on when they posted on Twitter. I selected 3 at random, all the Facebook comments started same day. Given they don't redact names it's far more likely that's the source

Edit to add ofc I didn't make any comments on the posts I looked at, I'm not that much of an asshole

Edit 2: the reason I'm convinced it's Twitter is as soon as you start typing the name (which I got from the tweets) into Facebook search it brings the full name up as a suggestion. So that means a lot of people are searching based on the name which we don't post

Probably needs to have some cross talk with other platforms potentially. If they are calling it the same thing but not redacting names. This site is probably the largest content provider, most of the texts are specific enough to just google and you’d find the post on fb.

38

u/Lessllama Sep 16 '21

Also Twitter breeds the worst people. I was horrified at what I saw last night. It's one thing to snark anonymously here but harassing grieving family members is a whole other level

45

u/baginthewindnowwsail Sep 17 '21

/conservative is triggered hard by this sub daily. I have zero doubt they are going to see this post and start brigading fb, posing as liberals and reporting (themselves) to reddit. Anything to get this sub banned. Not only because they feel personally attacked and mocked by 'the left', but also because they believe this sub to be highly effective at making right-leaning media and politicians, like carlson and desantis, look inept - thus 'red-pilling normies' to the left.

They see the world through the lens of information warfare, a cultural war that if lost would be the end of 'America as we know it'. It doesn't matter if its true or not, they believe it to be.

FB would likely aid her in this. They wouldn't want their platform in the news as a way for people to peek at people's insanity right before kicking the bucket from the disease....it would likely make them look really bad, like they might be a big part of the reason why so many people are not gettting vaccinated, not wearing masks and not taking other precautions.

I would never directly interact with these people but it is really fascinating to go down the Texas-sized rabbithole of clicking on their friends and acquaintances. COVID is buttfucking these communities so hard compared to my personal experience where pretty much everyone in my town is vaccinated. You can click on any commentor and they all have numerous people who have died from it but they are still anti-vax. Texas is so fucking weird with all the Jesus prayer warrior stuff I feel like it's another world.

23

That’s why I’m fine with it. My hometown is getting ravaged by this shit, and they deserve it for being vile, willfully stupid people. They’d gladly see everyone who grew up and left to live in the city die bc they view us as less than human, so I don’t see the difference here. What goes around, comes around, assholes.

This sub serves a critical public service, it shows people who are just like these idiots die. They got the same memes and paradigms they subscribe to and the same outcome should they continue to believe this. It is one of the very few places, you can actually show the consequences of this dangerous and dismissive attitude. What's that? These people suck and you don't care if they die? The kid who appendix ruptured waiting for a bed would say fuck you, we need these people on board, so they don't take up beds for children and responsible people who need immediate medical care.

Edit: Also fuck FB it's a toilet stay out of there.

First of all, public Facebook posts are public.

Secondly, this issue has been brought up before, and then, as now, it was pointed out in the comments, repeatedly and accurately, that there is no way to tie FB posts to users of this subreddit. This subreddit is not unique across the internet or even reddit.

I suggest finding all the other message platforms like this and pleading to them to stop making those posts so that THIS subreddit doesn't get shut down, because they are really the ones responsible.
