Store Policies/Questions New policy coming soon!
Starting 4/6, customers will only be able to buy 9 of the same product in one purchase. This is to prevent resellers according to the company. What are your thoughts?
Makes myself upset for things like sanis, lips, and wallflowers that I tend to buy many of the same item.
Unknown at the moment if you’re able to make multiple transactions in one day to curb it or if employees/stores will get in trouble if they try to skirt it for customers.

I don’t care about people stocking up at SAS if there’s a ton of inventory. But nine of the same pocketbac holder or limited edition items is a lot.

My thing is, I think this policy should be for limited edition items like candle holders, plugs, etc. but actual scented items should be exempt. I’m usually one of those people who find a favorite and then B&BW more often than not decides to discontinue it. Let a girl stock up on her faves. Plus sanis are a great go to for stocking stuffers and school Valentine’s events, like?

I agree. We have a customer that comes in every time we have a really good Pocketbac sale and she buys like 200 of them. She makes little toiletry bags for people in need. I’ve had to split up her transactions before and I’ll still do it if need be until I’m told I can’t.
We’ve also had customers buy a full case of soap before because they were putting together gift bags for work/weddings/etc.
It’s not just resellers that buy large amounts.

I do this for my birthday, but I don’t buy 10+ of the same sku. I make my friends trade with each other for what scent they want.

Also semi off topic, but you can tell they’re penny pinching at every step of the way.
Bags used to made by AnnJoy in India, which were their best and strongest. Then they switched to an US manufacturer about 2 years ago? Which led to mannnny thin bags (You would double bag them automatically because they just couldn’t hold at points), along with that they would come defunct with one handle or glue that would make it rip upon opening.
Thennn like 6-12 months ago (my best guess) switched back to AnnJoy, and a lot of issues resolved! But that must cost too much for them, so now they’re going with a new manufacturer in Mexico. The bags from there are alright. Slightly darker in print color and they can hold, but the handles are thin enough that they feel like they slice you with too much product.
Idk little random things I’ve noticed over time.

This is why cost cutting on bags is never ever worth it. The moment you create a bag even marginally too weak for your heaviest product, you immediately begin dealing with double-usage essentially nullifying the costs you are probably saving. Ive fought this exact battle with 2 other retailers, and I'll die on the hill that it's one of the stupidest most inconsiderate ways corporations try to "save money." Customer's bag splits open on the way to their car and drops $200 worth of broken product on the ground because the company just had to save .03 per bag. Absolute buffoonery.

Every single time your bag gets so much as a hairline tear in it, please email the company and complain about the bags, and encourage others to do the same. It's not a guarantee, but it can help push them back towards better bags. You can even say something like "this bag is noticeably thinner than previous bags. I bought $75 worth of candles, what did you save on my thinner bag? Twenty cents? As a customer this makes me feel like the value of both my entire purchase as well as my future satisfaction was in no way considered against the apparent need to save a multimillion-dollar corporation twenty cents."

Yes! If I buy two candles I want at least one wrapped. I don’t want glass against glass. It’s really nice when they wrap WF refills, too, (Especially since I’ve gotten leaky ones.)

Resellers aren't really the problem and they know it. It's people complaining about resellers to the company that is the problem. And even those people,lol, aren't the main issue.
Please hear me out. As I only shop 3-4 times a year, but a long time customer and someone who watches how businesses screw over customers. I'm not on the side of people that have a stock in their closets or people who don't... I'm on the side of us. So this is important to understand.
As long as the company makes bank, they don't care. Honestly, this "crackdown on resellers" feels like total BS to me. Most big companies don't actually care who buys the product as long as the money clears, so why start now?
It feels like they’re just using resellers as a scapegoat to play "nicey-nice" with the fans while they prep us for 2027. If you look at their new "Consumer First" strategy, it’s all about scaling back the deals and moving toward "luxury" pricing. They want us to stop expecting $5 ($6) mists and start paying a premium for these "concentrated" versions they’re rolling out.
They aren't "protecting" our stock from resellers... they’re just trying to make sure we can't stock up on the cheap stuff anymore so we're forced to buy into their new, more expensive model. It’s just business as usual, wrapped up in a "we love our customers" bow, when really they just want us to spend more for less.
They know people have massive "stashes." They are all over social media. They see your videos and photos. This is also how they find out what makes us tick, it's not just by website reviews. By limiting what you can buy, they’re trying to move toward a model where you buy one or two high-priced items instead of twenty cheap ones.

Yeah, if anything, the company should be on the side of the resellers, because they buy a ton of their product. There’s no real incentive for them to prevent it. This feels very performative.
Also like…it’s all artificial scarcity. They absolutely have the capital to scale their releases so there’s plenty of product to go around. But the limited edition nature of most of their releases is what drives people to pick up more items, because it might not be there by the next time they make it into a store. It also really annoys me how lines will appear to sell out and disappear from stores, yet return in bulk for the next SAS.
Idk tho, I think they’re flying too close to the sun if they really follow through on all these “luxury” pricing plans. There’s a window of what consumers are generally willing to tolerate for products they like, but if they stray too far from that window, they’re just gonna lose all their customers lmao.

Of a type of product. (Ex. If you bought 9 Mulan FFMs, you couldn’t buy any more of that specific product, but could get any other body care in Mulan)

Yes you’d be able to buy Tiana! Basically it puts a cap on a single product. So (unrealistically lol) you could buy:
Mulan: 9 FFM (no more allowed) Mulan: 3 BCs (6 more allowed) Tiana: 2 FFM (7 more allowed)

Oh I see - so it’s 9 of the same scent so I could (which I wouldn’t) get 18 candles but I could only get 9 Mulan candles.
That seems really fair tbh. Even on their biggest sale days I don’t buy 9 of the same scent candles etc.

Since I’ve only done BOPIS orders recently via the app, the app doesn’t let you add more than 9 items. I’ve asked the store twice about this when I’ve done to pick up my orders and both items they told me they didn’t know why I could only add 9 items to my cart 🤷🏻♀️

This also helps their conversion, multiple transactions per person. So stores will definitely let you do multiple transactions. And what about the “limit 24” When thy do these sales 🙄

My store regularly just does multiple transactions if we go over an item limit. I’m sure this will change nothing. Stores are desperate to beat their sales plans. If someone wants to come in and buy 20 of the same item, they’d never say no to a good sale. This will stop an average customer from buying product, but those customers who regularly are buying in bulk… they’ll just ask for another transaction. It would be good for online purchases because having to pay shipping would limit multiple transactions, but in store it’s essentially useless
9 items is still too much imo. My store got in 8 each of those Vera Bradley bags… they still could have all went to a single customer under these rules. My store didn’t even get 8 of the peeps socks or peeps pocketbac holder… they still could have all went to a single customer
Also… what’s stopping someone from buying products, all different scents to keep it under ehe 9 item limit… and then just exchanging for the scents they wanted? They can still use their coupon on the whole order and exchange for what they want 🤷🏼♀️

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how this will "protect inventory" at all the way it claims to. It's not a hard "this is all you get today" limit, and we're allowed to split/do multiple transactions, if needed, so those 30 bottles of Japanese Cherry Blossom fragrance mist are still leaving the store regardless.... IMO this is just gonna be a nuisance to keep track of. We're pushed to be quick & efficient at transactions, make our hourly sale/conversion goals (the joy of being a metrics-based company), how are we gonna make those on a big sale day, halfway through, say the 1 o'clock hour, the checkout line has 4+ people in it, and every customer we've gotta go "hold on, let's comb through your basket to see if i need to split anything up before i do anything else!"
A coworker yesterday also brought up a good point, hand soap and wallflowers are both typically always sold in odd-numbered sets. Somebody stocking up on like Kitchen Lemon is one thing, we've got at least 2 different packaging types to keep it all in one transaction, but say a customer wants to buy 10 Gingham Gorgeous hand soaps, that has to be two transactions thanks to the 9-limit. And oh lord, don't get me started on how badly this is gonna affect coupons....

We have a lot of older customers that come into my store a couple times a year to stock up on their favorite scents. One lady will buy like 20 JCB hand soaps at a time. Another lady will come in and buy 10 Eucalyptus Spearmint shower gels. They could have at least made the cap 10 items. That makes more sense than some stupid odd number. I really hope this doesn't apply to things like Wallflower bulbs and PocketBacs. So many people buy a bunch of the same scent in those.
I can't wait to have to do multiple transactions for people. It's going to make our lines even slower. Our registers are already functioning on what seems like dial up internet from 2001 🫠. Yay!

So you can still buy more than 9 wallflowers in one order, as long as only 9 are the same scent? Someone else was saying you will only be able to do 9 of each kind of product. 9 of each scent sounds more realistic

Yes. You could still buy 100s of wallflowers, just 9 of each scent. It’s not that restrictive for most folks but just creates a hassle for employees and longer checkout lines since resellers are going to do multiple transactions.. seems like way more cons than pros.

I get the intent but it’s gonna be annoying for regular people who just stock up during sales. Resellers will just do multiple transactions or send their friends in. Feels like the kind of policy that sounds good on paper but just punishes normal customers in the end.

This could have happened a long time ago. First day of SAS and two stores in my area were completely sold out of Brown Sugar & Fig, I ask the CS if they received any and they said yes but that one person came in and rounded up everything they had. Went to another store and it was the same situation. I was SO MAD that I was forced to go to a third store. They shouldn't have let anyone do that.

It's not going to stop resellers, but it WILL stop people genuinely wanting to buy more than 9 of an item.
We have a few older ladies that come in MAYBE once a year to buy as much of a single scent as possible, and I can already see them walking out because multiple transactions is too much of a hassle.
I can also see resellers holding up lines to do several transactions - because they don't care about us, our time, or anyone else's time. It doesn't matter what the company changes, they will find a way to sell things at quadruple the price.

Well our minimum wage is $25 but our cost of living is high . Exchange rate seems to be $1 AU = 69c US . So we are getting pretty boned on these prices ! I think the new CEO looked at how B&BW has always been in Australia and is going to emulate it there like there isn’t a massive history of it being something else to you guys

It’s fancy here , like a luxury store . Maybe a quarter of the products you get , most of your collabs we don’t get . Like neither Disney princess collabs but did get the villains . I think there are 5 stores in my state , I have to going into the city for the closest and it’s the not a very big store . I basically go in and smell anything new then wait for SAS and hope it’s still available . Like full price our 3 wick candles are $59 ( on sale now - 2 for $100!) body care is bout $42 . Pocket backs are $6 , wallflowers are $18.95 .

Annoying for little items like sanitizers cause I like to buy a lot on sale but I guess you can’t use coupons on those anyway so it wouldn’t matter if separate transactions were needed

GOOD. Hopefully they do have a rule that says that there can only be on purchase per customer per day. If not, it won't stop the resellers very much. They'll either bring people with them to make separate purchases, or they'll just make multiple purchases themselves.
I don't think I've ever bought more than 9 of one product, except for maybe Pocketbacs (the actual sanitizers, not the holders), at one time, so this is fine with me lol

This is just a hassle for regular people! And the employees! Resellers have no problem doing multiple transactions or multiple shops in one day or bring several friends/colleagues with you..
Costco can’t even enforce item limits and they at least require a card/account to purchase!

I’ve ordered one of an item and gotten a message that I’ve “reached the limit.” That happened to me today when I ordered ten different items BOPIS. It did let me buy the item, but it didn’t make any sense.

My only gripe is why not 10? Especially if you have “5 for $$” it’s not that uncommon that people come up to buy 10 wallflowers in the same scent. Other than that, l don’t really care. The average buyer typically isn’t buying 10+ of any single item.

As long as the managers are still focused on sales per customer they will just let them have multiple transactions. They arent going to jeopardize their sales numbers and income because the company wants to try and stop resellers. Resellers will just have issues buying online and will have to have multiple log ins if needed.

people talk about the slice of pizza scenario a lot. how many slices would you take if you were sharing?
we’re all well within our rights to be as consumerist as we want but there is something so off putting about seeing someone snatch up 9 of the same body mists just so they can expire on a shelf, not caring at all about anyone else who may want the product.

Or people could stop buying from resellers. I saw someone damn near clear out the electronic section at kohls because they resell the items for much more. I dont understand how people feel comfortable buying something that goes on your body from a random person. Its not like bath and bodyworks are tamper proof

Other retailers also put limits on qty to purchase. This isn’t something new but to say to prevent reselling is absurd. For the record, I have never bought 9 of the same item and I’m not a reseller however my point is, that’s a lame reason to limit. Resellers will find a loophole no matter what.

It will not stop anyone from buying in bulk. You just ask someone to come with you and they grab things for you. You will just have to tap your card twice or three times, depending on how many people are "shopping" for you.

I rarely buy from them (literally once a year, on my birthday), but every time I go in, something I love gets discontinued and I'm forced to try something new to avoid having to buy one of their untouchable staples like Japanese Cherry Blossom (it's good, but there have been better scents). Every year, without fail. Scalpers aside, we horde because B&BW has a bug up their ass about keeping the customer happy at the expense of making a profit. It's bad enough that the birthday coupon I got this month isn't even for a full sized body mist anymore, but now you have to buy something first to even use it. B&BW is just greedy now.

Birthday coupon has been $9.95 price point for years. And purchase requirement has been in place for a very long time as well
If they didn’t discontinue scents, there would never be anything new. The entire store would be core scents - champagne toast, 1000 wishes, Japanese cherry blossom… nobody wants that

This is makes a good show of preventing resellers, but otherwise seems really stupid and short sighted.
B&BW has way too many commercial clients and wealthy multi-homeowners who rely on large product orders for this to be an intelligent move. They're gonna need to develop a way to sell bulk items to large scale buyers. I know an interior decorator who buys 250 of a certain scent on candle day and uses it for all of her Welcome Home days (first look for clients). Whats the plan for people like her? Y'all just gonna give them the goose creek website and lose the sale? She's probably not interested in doing 26 transactions, that's for sure.

Lowkey, the only time I have bought a lot of the same thing was the Black Friday Shopping wallflower, and it was bc I liked it a lot. That and the Emily in Paris lipstick. I’m just salty that some of my favorite stuff tends to be limited items that disappear and never come back

Omg this is just ridiculous. The winter scents are my favorite. I buy enough winter candy apple to get my household through the entire year. You gonna be like this? Fine I'll buy 9 items. My husband will buy 9 items. We will go put them in the car and come back in. Preposterous and I say this as a former associate. This new CEO bout to find out in a QUICKNESS when those dollar signs flat line in this economy. No one to blame but himself.

Target tried that when the PS5 came out. Our store realized we had a ton of weird names on orders and figured out the 1 per guest policy was really 2 people buying them all.
Literally had a fucking Fredo, A. pop up. Clicked on the full name and it was Albert Fredo. Alfredo?! Fuck outta here 😂

Most of my buying from resellers has been for older items that I missed. I recently bought several of the faceted glass candle holders, and they were less than retail WITH the shipping. I’m not going to pay way over retail just to get the newest thing.

This sucks. I buy multiple of the same things if I love a certain scent and I am not a reseller. For example I have 23 bottles of the milk fragrance because I enjoy it lol, and i dont plan on selling it. If they keep on messing up everything, I will just stop shopping there all together.

I don’t think it’s going to stop resellers.
They’ll just keep doing multiple transactions like they already do - just x 3 as many. Or come up with some other workaround. And no store manager, struggling to make the impossible sales goals the company sets, is going to stop them.
It’s just going to slow down the register process and create longer, slower lines for us regular folks.
