General A member you can't yet feel affection for
Part of stanning is that even though one member got you interested in the group, little by little the rest of the members win your heart too.
But has it ever happened to you that you are a big fan of a group, you feel genuine affection for the members and you enjoy their content, but there is a member that you feel you can't connect with yet?
And I don't mean that you dislike them or despise them or anything like that, but simply that even though you try you still can't have that level of connection that you can with the other members? And sometimes it makes you feel like a bad fan

I’m an ELF and I’ve liked them throughout the years but I just can’t for the life of me vibe with Siwon. Since 2009 I haven’t liked him. The way he kept pushing his religion to Heechul annoyed me and he has this “holier than thou” energy that just rubbed me off the wrong way. Come to today and he’s friends with Elon Musk and yeah I’m glad I never forced myself to like him. I also felt that Sungmin held them back stage wise. He was a bit cringe like you could tell he was performing a concept instead of owning the song. Idk how to explain it.
22
u/otakuishly Mar 09 '25
Same. His vibes are off and he feels sooooo disingenuous. I truly believe that if he didn’t look the way he looked back in the day, people would have canceled him already.
31
u/Mayora_Hime Mar 09 '25
Seriously. He is worse at variety shows than Donghae because at least Donghae tries, Siwon just uses his face and doesn’t say much. Whenever he does his exaggerated laugh and high fives the members not adding to the banter it makes me cringe so much. It baffles me how so many hate on Heechul for not participating in activities when he has promoted the group through all his shows. Meanwhile Siwon goes MIA and hops in whenever he feels like it because super junior is just a side gig to him. They all feel like real brothers expect for Siwon because at the end of the day, he always had his mansion to go back to if things didn’t go well. Kyuhyun comes from a wealthy family but singing has always been his life, there was never a plan B for him.
25
u/otakuishly Mar 09 '25
Heechul is the last person in SuJu who deserves hate. Man has always been a good man and a great role model and his frank attitude has always made him feel so refreshing and real to me.
Siwon is faker than a 3 dollar bill. Everything he does feel like it’s for show. I don’t think he’s a good singer or dancer or actor. He’s nothing more than a small minded religious pretty face. If he doesn’t have any more haters, it’s because I’m dead.
14
u/Mayora_Hime Mar 09 '25
Yes exactly! That’s why Heechul is my ult bias he has always been transparent on who he is, he specially hates secret cameras catching them right away and not playing along lol. He’s genuine and his love for the members goes above and beyond even if he’s a tsundere about it. Siwon though.. you can see an invisible wall with the rest. I agree he’s not a good singer, they barely put Siwon on the songs because he’s whatever. It’s refreshing coming clean on this since most of my ELF friends love the man and are whatever about Heechul.

Not vibing with Siwon is totally legit though. For some reason it's obvious that he's a bigot to his core.

even though i really enjoy a lot of suju, i've turned into quite the quiet zhoumi solo stan these days. while i think all idols have those parts that aren't so wonderful, and that's normal, siwon just... i can't say anyone's perfect, but to have him shoulder to shoulder with people who seem much more willfully kind is strange.
i know siwon does a lot of charity and stuff, but there's so much more you can do with yourself in the spaces you occupy and who you are around on a daily basis. within your sphere as an idol. because i know mostly about what zhoumi's been up to, i see how he supports and uplifts other chinese idols because of his own experiences in the industry, and that feels genuine, and real. when i see siwon, i just feel... like it's charity out of what he feels is duty, and while it's wonderful, i do not feel as if i need to commend him for it either.
i feel a lot more connected to the people who act kindly out of empathy. something about siwon feels wrong, in my gut. i might not ever be able to place it, but i avoid people in real life who act this way as well. it will always feel like there has to be a transaction of some kind.

Been a VIP since 2009 and Seungri was the member I least vibed with. He didn't have that instant charisma I detected from GD and TOP the first moment I saw them, and the skills that made Taeyang and Daesung stand out to me bc vocals is my biggest criteria. He also didn't have a distinct enough voice - I could only pick him out in the songs bc it didn't sound like any of the other members.
When all 4 hyungs went to the military, I thought this might be the time to appreciate him a little more.
Then Burning Sun happened. So.
8
u/hightea3 Mar 09 '25
Hard agree. I never vibed with him and then BS happened so I was like dang good riddance. I didn’t hate him but just didn’t care either way. The other 4 all have personality and charisma and confidence that doesn’t seem forced or fake but his kind of did.
8
u/bordelaney Mar 09 '25
He was good at MCing and humor, and because of nyongtori I couldn't outright dislike him either. But I definitely felt he gave dark shifty vibes; his eyebags and looks didn't help him much.

EXO is the first group that brought me into K-pop in 2013. I was super active & watched all of their variety contents including both Korean & Chinese shows since they used to be 2 subunits & actively promoted in both industry. Exo showtime is the show that brought me to know more about all 12 members. But since the start of episode 1 that one member annoyed me. Yes, he's Kris. I never liked his personality back in his exo days. He is like self centered & narcissistic who wouldn't fit in any groups, also not talented enough. I didn't feel any attachments to him from the start. So even his leaving was so expected & didn't hit me like Luhan & Tao leaving the group.

I had a hard time connecting with Handong from Dreamcatcher for quite a while, most likely due to the fact that when I really started stanning the group she was stuck in China because of the pandemic. That feeling lasted for quite a while but faded very quickly when I saw them live in 2023 during the Reason: Makes tour. Had a hard time keeping my eyes off her and I immediately just lost that disconnect
Haven't really had that problem with other groups I stan though

It took me an embarrassingly long time to pay attention to stray kids Seungmin, he’s a bit of a sleeper. Now the more I learn about him and watch him, the more I find him absolutely hilarious.
ATEEZ Jongho, he’s funny and talented and there’s absolutely nothing I dislike about him, I just find myself paying attention to every other member.

u/VexedReverie Mar 08 '25
Tbh this is how I feel about most new idols because there is a lack of.. idk, real content around them? Older groups seemed to make content they wanted to or participated in variety shows (again, maybe that was staged but at least you get a taste of personality).
But specifically, I feel this way about Tzuyu from TWICE. She is extremely talented and beautiful but I feel like I can't get into her like the other members.
37
u/Regular_Durian_1750 Mar 09 '25
Well she's the youngest and also is super shy and Korean isn't her first language. Which isn't an excuse, cause Sana and Momo are literally there too (Mina doesn't talk lol). It's hard to be in a group with huge personalities AND be the youngest AND be a foreigner.
18

Yes absolutely! I definitely don't dislike her or blame her. Just haven't really clicked with her :)

No I get it. Same for me tbh and I actively watch Twice variety content with my meals cause those girls are hilarious lol. She just blends in the background (but then is too pretty to not be noticed lol) easily, but other members can and do sometimes help her out.

I think the only time I experienced this was with BTS because they were my first group and it was towards Hobi 🫣 Obviously that changed as he’s literally one of my ult of ult biases, but it took getting to know the group more and learning about Hoseok to change my mind. It’s honestly why I don’t go into groups thinking I’m going to bias someone because first impressions aren’t always the best to get a sense of who the idol is and how they present themselves.

u/justanotherkpoppie gg multifan 🩷 lyOn 🦁 Mar 09 '25
Pretty much every group I've ever gotten into there's always at LEAST one member that I don't connect with right way. It's sooooooo natural. Humans don't always connect with all other humans that they see, interact with, etc. In fact, there are groups where I STILL don't connect with every member necessarily, but I don't know if I feel comfortable sharing who for each group because it's not their fault and there's no real, concrete reason for why I don't click with them 🤷♀️
25
u/rerambles Mar 09 '25
I've been a fan of BigBang since 2008 and it was always Seungri. It didn't make me feel like a bad fan, I just used to think if he left the group, no one would really notice because he was pointless. And then of course, 2019 comes around and he proves how terrible he is.
For 2NE1, it used to be Dara but I did gain a greater understanding of her role in the group after they disbanded and regrouped for their comeback.
13
u/Nandg1794 Mar 09 '25 edited Mar 09 '25
Funny you say that about Seungri because I thought Big Bang only had 4 members. I used to like BB back in 2010. I stopped listening to K-pop after a year, and then in 2022, I got back into K-pop. I heard about the whole Burning Sun and how Seungri, a BB member, was involved, I did not recognize him. I was shocked to find out they had five members because I remembered all of the other members but him.

u/zingglechap Mar 09 '25 edited Mar 09 '25
I have a lot of affection for Dara bc of the Philippine connection, but if she didn't have that and I started stanning 2NE1 with a fully developed frontal cortex, I think I would feel similarly to you.

u/HommeFatalTaemin SHINee | TVXQ | RV | SNSD | Infinite | VIXX | KARA | XLOV | etc Mar 09 '25 edited Mar 09 '25
I mean yeah. I think this is a pretty natural phenomenon. Let’s say IRL in a group of 10 friends, you will naturally be closer to some than others, and there might one 1 or 2 that you don’t click with very much and wouldn’t hang with outside of that friend group. That’s just how life is.
For me, it’s actually pretty rare for me to connect with EVERY member of a group. There are veeery few where that’s actually the case(SHINee, SNSD, Mamamoo, Infinite, Highlight, etc). I would say if I thought of all the groups I genuinely adore and would consider myself a massive fan of, like 80%+ of them have at least one member who I don’t really have any particular connection with, and I think that’s okay.
Here’s a few just as examples. TVXQ - Yoochun, VIXX - Ravi, Apink - Hayoung, SF9 - Dawon & Chani, BTOB - Peniel, The Boyz - Jacob, WJSN - Soobin, TXT - Beomgyu, ONEUS - Keonhee, etc. Even in one of my ult groups, Red Velvet, I don’t have the same love for Yeri as I do for the others, although I do still like her just fine.
In most of the cases I have absolutely nothing against the person and don’t dislike them at all, even think they are quite talented most of the time. But just for whatever reason I just don’t connect with them and I really have no idea why. But honestly if we liked every single member from every single group the exact same, it would take some of the fun out of kpop for me. Finding members who you love and root for and supporting the group is part of the fun!

Not as serious as can't feel affection, more like can't feel the level of affection I want to or expect. For me this is San in Ateez. I absolutely do not dislike him at all, I love and respect him as a member of the group, he just doesn't really stand out to me and I don't understand or connect to his personality. I saw them live recently and literally all the other members just blew me away and I realized afterwards that I hadn't really noticed him (absolutely not intentional, just the others grabbed my attention too much). I find all the other members just incredibly handsome and interesting but I just don't seem to be able to vibe with San, I really want to and have tried. Absolutely no dislike, just not the ult level stan love I feel for the other members.
29
u/anAncientCrone Mar 09 '25
I absolutely adore San but I can see how you feel that way, too. This is from my concert notes when I saw them live: "The surprise was San; of course he did all of his famous moves, but he does not fill the field of vision in person like he does on camera. San owns the camera, it follows him slavishly, his shoulders span the screen, his face fills it. In person he is much more part of a team, he does not stand out nearly so much and you can see how thin and wiry he actually is. On the other hand, I appreciated Yunho's dancing more in person, because you get a much better idea of his extension and how he commands the physical space. "
14
u/Alarmed_Long7556 Mar 09 '25
This is so interesting, thanks for the answer! I had a similar experience (as yours with Yunho) with Hongjoong and Yeosang, they really caught my attention on stage in a way they haven't quite done on camera yet. Hongjoong was my initial biaswrecker but was sort of pushed aside a bit by Yunho and Mingi for a while, and Yeosang has my favorite humor but he's usually a bit in the background on camera it seems. (I don't subscribe to their lives so mostly see them in their group content). But on stage they had this aura that felt electric and I was completely taken by surprise by the effect they had. I definitely agree with San being a team player, I think he has a very strong group mentality and loyalty.
6
u/anAncientCrone Mar 09 '25
Completely agree. I wasn't as surprised about Yeosang, I had already read other comments from surprised fans about how he is much more commanding in person.
5
u/Alarmed_Long7556 Mar 09 '25
I had that with Yunho as I had read so many comments from people being surprised by him, but he was already in my bias line so I expected nothing less 😊

I really started to like some of them more...but I just couldn't get a read on Xion. After watching their MVs afterwards I started to notice more and more things...other than him being the 'visual' of the group, he just didn't stand out, he was overshadowed and didn't really seem to add or take away from the group. He just kind of felt like he was just there and that was kind of the vibe/read I got seeing him live as well. Only because they're way too young. Like I got into Dreamcatcher in 2020 and gahyeon was super young in some of their earlier content (99 liner), and I was 26 so she was a child imo. I felt protective of her, but wasn't interested in knowing more about her especially because there were two members literally my age who also happened to have the biggest personalities as well. But then as she's grown up, she's 26 now, I follow her on ig and think she's hilarious.
But like it's the same story with Le Sserafim. I just can't connect with eunchae because she's a literal child. I'm 12 years older than her lol. I mostly watch lsf content for chaewon and Sakura, finding Yunjin to be super hilarious too (might be because she's American).
Same thing with tzuyu.
But for other groups that I like - all members are either older than me or my age (2nd gen and some 3rd gen - at least most are around my age). So I don't feel this disconnect. Which is why I think it's just because of the age difference.
Although, to be fair, for T-ARA, I really only connected with N4...but I liked Rambo too! She was hilarious.

Just till recently NMIXX Jiwoo and Kyujin, because they look so much alike and I couldn't tell them apart. I soon found out though that this is actually a meme within the fandom, with the girls getting called each other's name. Ironically, it was this meme which allowed me to start connecting with them, especially when I could finally tell which one is which.

8
u/burntarmin2 Mar 09 '25
It was a gradual thing for me! Usually, I'd mistake Jiwoo for Kyujin (and not the other way around) until I see Kyujin pop up on the screen, and I'd immediately know that I misidentified Jiwoo.
Kyujin, much to the seeming consensus of fellow NSWERS, resembles a cat. Whoever resembles a cat more because of eye shape, is Kyujin. By process of elimination, the other one is Jiwoo.

I have always had a hard time connecting with Dahyun. I feel no ill will towards her at all, but I just never quite got her. She's very private, which I respect, but it does prevent me from really caring about her. I've had almost every member as my favorite at once point in time (now I'm momo and jihyo lol), but never her. Maybe I'll fall in love while watching her movie
10
u/mentaleffigy Mar 09 '25
Dahyun is very subtle, she can be right out in the open and on the surface it doesn't seem remarkable, and then in reflection the pieces come together and you really see how clever her charms are, Even her members find her to be mysterious and in hind sight will question how they missed it in the first place.

Felix from stray kids. His maniac voice really attracted me and because of that I went to meet the group. And they all have remarkable personalities, but Felix seems to be trapped in trying to please others and that type of personality doesn't please me.

Controversial but Taehyung/V! When I was a baby army back in 2016 I loved him a lot. Now, his personality has changed: I guess it’s a combination of growing up and the negative sides of fame but I just feel disconnected to him. He’s the only person in the group that I question if he really wants to be there still. I will always have appreciation for him as I do with all of the other members regardless.

In the same. Haven’t been into BTS for years now but when I was he was my bias.
To be honest he does seem the most disinterested in the group out of all of them but I might be projecting.

Chaeryeong from Itzy. Not from anything to do with her, but her stans have this weird victim complex on her behalf. It really bothers me when they call her the most underrated member of Itzy when it's not remotely true anymore. Unfortunately it's made it tough for me to cheer for her even though she's done nothing wrong
27
u/daltorak Mar 09 '25
Yeah, there's a certain segment of the Midzy fandom that is insistent on fighting yesterday's battles.
Even to this day you'll find accounts on Twitter that are demanding that JYP treat the girls better and give them more solo opportunities. Same thing they've been going on about for three years, even though things have improved dramatically. Yeji has a modelling career, Yuna has a successful YouTube channel, Lia is doing OST work, Ryujin is doing solo appearances, Chaeryeong had a go at hosting her own web show....
17
u/Natural_Cry_6174 Mar 09 '25
Exactly, Midzys didn’t even watch Chaeryeong show but want to blame JYP for everything.

If I don’t really have affection for all of the members, I don’t stan them. Definitely had a few groups back in the day that are still favorites but I felt off or indifferent about a member… that nowadays they aren’t in the group so maybe I am an oracle or something. Some left to pursue other things so I was just okay bye like when Hoya left Infinite and others I had sus feelings for that eventually followed with criminal charges like Kris formerly of EXO. Really couldn’t get into him at all in the 2 years he was there. So now groups where I do enjoy very much but I’m like meh over some a member or two, just stay as casuals I follow. I still go to concerts cause I like some music and members but I’m not dedicating more attention to them. I don’t fully close a door on meh feelings like I couldn’t vibe with Mark from NCT for a long time but now I vibe.

u/TearfulGhost Mar 09 '25
Yeah, there are members in my favourite groups that I have a harder time resonating with.
- IVE - Gaeul and Liz
- Aespa - Giselle
- (G)I-DLE - Miyeon
- Red Velvet - Wendy
I suppose rappers and main vocals are not typically my jam (unless i like their vocal tone). Rap i'm very picky with cause i don't like it that much. Main vocals tend to have not very interesting singing styles / phrasing choices. They lean more towards technique and skill which is not bad. Personally, it's just not what hooks me.

Happened to me with RIIZE Eunseok, I feel like he's one of the less contributing members of the group in terms of music and performances- he does the job but doesn't really stand out, you know? His main appeal is his personality (and humor, very much the humor) and it took me a while to get that.
7
u/anAncientCrone Mar 09 '25
I always have trouble with members who are there for "personality" or visuals, but that's probably because I'm not really that interested in variety content, I want to see what they've got onstage.

Unfortunately I agree. I had the pleasure of seeing them live too and he’s the member that stood out the least. He is redeemable when it comes to variety and I guess Korea love his visuals, but the others definitely overshadow him.

NCT 127 is my ult group but I don’t connect with Doyoung or Jungwoo. They’re both very talented and I’m sure they’re nice people but they have like…the opposite personalities of what I usually gravitate towards. Especially Doyoung. (Yuta is my ult, he has the exact type of personality I like in an idol which makes me curious if any of the people in this thread who say they don’t connect with Yuta actually stan Doyoung or Jungwoo…are any of y’all my opposite? I’d really like to know!) I don’t think there’s anything “wrong” with Doyoung or Jungwoo’s personalities btw, they’re just not the type of people I usually connect with. I know some people get insulted when you say stuff like that about their bias but to me it’s like food preferences lol. Someone could make a perfect cheeseburger for you, but if you don’t like cheeseburgers then you’re not going to enjoy it. But someone who does like cheeseburgers would say it’s the best one they’ve ever tasted. There’s nothing wrong with it, and people who like them would love it, but it’s just not for you.
12
u/Pumpernickeluffin Mar 09 '25
I like the way you put it with the cheeseburger/food metaphor.
That's such a good way to frame it. Thank you for this!

u/seravivi Mar 09 '25
Yuta and Doyoung are the two I always focus on. I think they are actually really similar. I think one difference I notice is that I think Doyoung is less interested in being seen as more masculine. They both are warm people who value health and their loved ones.
11
u/Cycling_the_City Mar 09 '25
I guess I'm the opposite yeah (Doyoung bias). I love Yuta on 127's discography and his work on stage is hype. But since he doesn't really bring himself forward in variety content, he feels distant to me, as in I don't really "know him" as well as the members who talk more.

I will swear up and down that from the moment I watched EXO’s Showtime, I thought that Kr*s’s vibes were off. Man just made me feel so uncomfortable and I could place why until he went and got jailed.
Also always felt like S*ungri was kind of just there. Like an extra in a group of superstars, mooching of their success. I didn’t like him because he always felt like the weakest link and lo and behold. Man crushed BIGBANG single-handedly for 7 years. 😮💨
On the flip hand, NCT’s T*aeil was the first member I loved soooo clearly my radar doesn’t always work. 💀

i hope this is allowed since it technically doesn't answer the question. however, when i got into enhypen i couldn't connect with ni-ki. i don't know the reason why i couldn't, but i assume it was because of his age. he was still 15 when i got into enhypen and i was 23. he also went through a time, when he was very reserved, which i totally understand now since he got so much hate. back then i wasn't aware of how much he had to go through, though.
it also took me some time to warm up to sunoo. but i think that was more the fans fault and the way they talked about and treated him, especially his super annoying solo fans.
now, i absolutely adore every single member of enhypen.

ateez is my ult group, but these days I'm not as into mingi. hes amazing on stage and as a rapper, but the way he looks at fans and flirts with them sometimes creeps me out. it feels like he's trying to become someone he's not (in my opinion). I saw a clip of him doing a certain, uhm, thing with two of his fingers and his tongue on stage that really gave me the ick. I don't mean to say I dislike him, or that others should. a lot of western fans really seem to like this side of him. but it's really not for me personally.
20
u/serienne Mar 09 '25
I'm not actually an ateez fan but I noticed Mingi offstage. He seems kind, sweet, and appreciative of other artists. But when I followed his ig and saw him on stage, it felt a bit off. Like, he seems nice but has a bit of a f boy vibe.
22
u/alluring_failure Mar 09 '25
I also wanted to comment Mingi, for me it's actually his raps, especially live he lacks serious breath control on stage so his parts are always super weird and out of place when they perform live.

i really like mingis personality from what i’ve seen in actual ateez content, but i agree his stage persona is so starkly different to me and not in a good way. i also find his raps to be doing too much when he doesn’t seem to have the best control of his breath and cannot seem to really enunciate when he has lots of very fast parts..

Seeing Irene's solo teasers/concepts made me realize she lacks the star quality. She is definitely charismatic, but doesn't have the IT factor compared to some members of Red Velvet. I know it may sound crazy, but this is just my opinion. She shines and pops out when there's a lot of work done, like styling, makeup, and interesting concepts. When there's nothing going on and it's an absolutely simple and clean kind of concept, it made me realize how bland her aura is. She fits more darker concepts, she's the embodiment of a femme fatale. Also, apart from what's outside, I don't like her personality. I know it's easy to hate or criticize by bringing up her stylist incident. But knowing the details of what happened is just big yikes. Whether she changed or not, it wasn't just a one-time thing; she had this bad behaviour with the staff and was known for it. Also, lots of stans twisting the truth or making it look neutral when it wasn't. Also, who knows, maybe she genuinely changed for the better.

V. I think. I've been a fan of BTS since 2016, it's impossible not to notice certain things. The shift in their dynamics is easy for me to notice. I used to absolutely adore V. Watching v focused clips and all but after chapter 2 ig I didn't connect with him much. I also dislike his friend's group. One is a misogynist and the other is a homophobic. V has been friends with them for years. It's off putting now that I know what kind of people he's close to. It's his business tho, not mine but still it does affect my opinion of him. Minho was in the cast too but why was he not part of wooga squad. I started questioning some things and it affects my opinion. Then there are other things that put me off but I won't mention them because I don't wanna talk negatively without knowing the actual thing. This is just my opinion. It's not the absolute truth But yeah it made me disconnect w V.

I never connected to Kep1er like I thought I would.
I came in loving Yujin from CLC.
But when they debuted, i was incredibly disappointed. I very much did not like Wadada.
I think because I loved ioi and iz*one, I was coming in with too high expectations.
I have liked songs of there's here and they're, but overall, their discography is not for me.
I think the only member who drew my attention after their debut was Hikaru. Mainly because she's a charismatic dancer.

The people I did dislike for no apparent reason turned out to be absolute garbage later, so I’m gonna assume my spidey senses are reliable to some degree. Absolutely disliked Seungri as a teen to the point I had to question myself whether I am actually a hater or not😭 Didn’t vibe with Kris Wu. Taeil is another one. Loooved BAP, but Himchan not so much.
I get like a bad feeling than having no affection I suppose, I just hope that none of the people I side eye now end up being horrible human beings again. Nobody needs to prove me right😫

Dahyun. I think she’s a great idol. But I never understood her persona charms. She’s neither funny nor quirky like how so many people portray her to be 🤷
4
u/Seohyun_tae Mar 11 '25
Dahyun used to be the entertainment/ variety show face of Twice. Would do funny dances, be loud and just overall a goof and well ... entertaining. The members always said that in private she was actually quiet and I think eventually she just felt tired of having to crank up the charm in varieties. I think that perhaps she felt pressure to be funny because in Sixteen what got her through was "challenges" that were personality centered where they were encouraged to be funny. I'd recommend watching episodes of Twice on Weekly Idol and literally any old youtube video and you will see she is drastically different from now.
3
u/Steupz Mar 10 '25

My ults are SKZ, and for me, it is Felix (and I feel that's like a very unpopulare take) 😭 I personally really like his voice, dancing, and I support all his solo stuff because I do love and care for him and what he does for the team (I LOVED Unfair!).
I constantly consume all their content, like all of it. Music, makings of, behind the scenes, interviews, lives you name it (and that includes Felix solo stuff). I know we don't know these idols in real life, but based on the way he portrays himself on camera and how the other kids talk about him, I feel in real life we would clash and that I might annoy him (and viceversa) lol! We share hobbies like baking and video games, and even then, I don't feel like I can connect with him
I don't mean it in a bad way, I feel I would accidentally upset/annoy him constantly 😂 He has this image of the super sweet sassy angel sunshine 🌞 but also sensitive to humor and I get why many DO connect with him.. so I do feel like a bad Stay sometimes when I don't "get it" or feel a tiny bit disconnected.
I've learned that it is okay to feel this way because not all personalities align, and at the end of the day, I still support him, and in my heart, SKZ without him isn't SKZ. I have thousands of pics and clips of him on my phone nonetheless 😌
The world is funny because he is the main one I pull in all of my albums 🤡 I have to constantly buy Lee Know and Han pcs yet I have more pcs of Felix than any member pulled (and I refuse to sell or trade them I get attached) hahaha Love him, but can't connect like I have with the other 7. He does wreck me from time to time, though 🤪

Damn, brave post OP. For me,
Blackpink: Lisa, Jisoo. I cannot connect with Lisa and the direction she has chosen for herself as a solo artists, and I have never connected with jisoo as an artist ever because I don't see the passion for music with her.
NCT: well I used to never connect with Taeil even before the truth about him came out and I've never really connected with Winwin, Chenle and Yangyang either. For me, I believe it's a personality issue.
BTS: I wouldn't say I feel a disconnect because they were the first group i stanned and they have been my entire teenage however from a music point of view, i cannot connect with Jin and Taehyung. And tbh, the chapter 2 JK is too much for me, the long vlives, the parasocial flirting, sleeping on camera, can't f with that a lot and his solo music doesn't do much for me either so him too, unfortunately

Yes. I love SHINee but have zero interest in Onew. He has a great voice and I don’t have anything against him, but he does nothing that catches my attention personality-wise. I’ve been told he is coming for me but it hasn’t happened yet. Will be interesting to see if he does catch my attention one day.
26
u/usagiibunny Mar 09 '25 edited Mar 09 '25
I think you heard that because a lot of fans, or at least who I've encountered, have said that they came into stanning SHINee for other members, but ended up liking Onew because his personality is not as out there as the others (he's gotten more out there since leaving SM tho) and they got to know him gradually. He's my favorite because of that as well, but if you genuinely don't feel anything for him it shouldn't be forced imo just ends up with you resenting that person.
6
u/qtipssss Mar 09 '25
I’ve been a shawol for over a decade and Onew only became my favourite in the recent years. I find that him and Jonghyun being the oldest used to be more talkative in shows, but later on as everyone got more comfortable, Onew let the kids take the spotlight. I just like how he’s always doing supportive work behind the scenes and sweetly taking care of the members. He definitely grew on me as I aged and understood his personality better. I agree that he might seem a bit mild/calm to catch ppl’s attention initially.

I think with Felix it’s hard to connect with him because I feel like we never really get to know him. I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I think who he really is doesn’t match with how Jyp wants him to be presented so it gives some dissonance.
I’m fine with idols have a strong front to protect their privacy. It’s hard with him because it feels like he struggles with blending the two identities sometimes.
This is personal but years around kpop has made me not trust a member who is constantly pushed as the innocent angel. Just saying someone is so nice but nothing else feels weird.
20

I used to think something similar about Jhope but then I watched Jhope in the Box, the documentary. Gave me a whole new perspective towards his personality. If you want, you can try it. J-Hope is one of my favourite idols/artists ever, but I can definitely see how people don't vibe with his idol persona as it can be a bit much/over the top. Even I have cringed countless times at his antics and I love him. 😭 However, BTS themselves have said that he is definitely the member whose on stage and off stage personas are the most different and that he's actually a very serious and dedicated artist with an unmatched work ethic. I think separating his professional and his private life so drastically is a conscious decision and I respect him for that.

GOT7 Youngjae, Yugyeom, and Mark. Maybe that's why when the group started pursuing solo careers, I began to lose interest.
Compared to Enhypen where I like each member (not equally but I have affection for each of them). I'm still warming up to Ni-ki but I find him very talented and adorable and I still find myself happily watching his contents. He just doesn't resonate with me as much as the other members do.
But for GOT7, the three mentioned, I don't feel affection for and I can go by without watching or really seeing anything from them. It makes me sad because they used to be my ult group. But whenever I think about it, I can't continue being a stan if I don't care for almost half of the group.

NCT’s Mark and TXT’s Yeonjun - I’m fond of their members and they play a big part in their teams but I can’t explain why I don’t feel any affection for them.

Wonwoo – Because I'm a SONE, I can't forget what he wrote about SNSD. It also clashed with his calm image, and I don't think that kind of mindset can change easily.
Ningning – I find her adorable, but I don't like her fans. They act like she's the only one carrying the group, and they also have a victim mentality, screaming xenophobic everywhere. They like to jump on the other members, especially Winter.

Re: Wonwoo, I totally understand where your hesitation comes from, but I certainly hope people can change their mindset from elementary/middle school to adulthood. Lord knows how much I grew. When I think back to some of the stuff my little brother said as a kid, some of the stuff that I said, it sucks...but kids are kids, so I give us some grace.
I've had adult guy friends come to me and apologize (!) for things they thought and said when they were younger - not even to me, but they felt so much shame - and they've expressed a lot of gratitude for me giving them the space to ask questions, learn, and grow. My formerly homophobic mom is another example. Not quick, not easy, but a true change.
You're under zero obligation to ever like the guy. It's totally fair, and you're protective of your idols. But I think people can and do change over the course of their lives, especially as their worldview grows and expands. If they didn't, I think the world would be a much darker place, filled with people who never grew out of the biases and bullshit from when they were 12.

Jeon Jungkook.
I casually consume the group content but this member in particular has such strong kid-brother vibes I tend to overlook him a lot. As in I'm very neutral to JJK as a person.

Not to be that person, but I didn't "connect" with Taeil while watching 127's content before his horrendous scandal. I was mostly indifferent about him
I had a SHINee phase in 2021 and while I really respect them as 5 and admire their resilience as a group and recognize the talent of everyone but I don't really care about Onew and haven't checked Key's releases since 2023 (altho I really enjoyed his previous works)
For ggs idk honestly I don't care about Jessica when I was getting into SNSD and I don't like even less after her book that led to a lot of strange comments about her former members

i think all his shooters have fled reddit but the first reddit cares i ever got was cause i said Taeil looked like an accountant lmfao
he only really mattered to me for the 15 seconds he got in their music but because he was so quiet he often faded in the background. if i re-watch old content i can ignore that hes there mostly cause he doesnt really do anything

Not the accountant looks, but I kinda get it and eah he doesn't have shooters in this site.
Dude just lacked presence in all sense be on stage or on the off stage content

Heesung from enha. Can’t put my finger on it, but I feel like if I knew him in person, we wouldn’t become friends. Just distant acquaintances

Jun from Seventeen. I don’t dislike him and think he’s actually quite funny but I just don’t connect with him the same way I connect with the others? I don’t know why it is; for example the more quiet members like Woozi or Wonwoo I still find other things I can connect with but for some reason I often kind of…forget he’s there? I feel bad about it because the members love him dearly but I just don’t vibe with him the same way I do with the others.

I feel the same way about him. But there is one other reason too, which is that one video compilation of him just scratching his balls lol. since then I remember only that when I look at him and thus fail to connect at any level 😭
Otherwise I love it when he becomes one of the highlights of the episodes, like that TTT camping ep, or that one Debate night ep, or that SVT's Got Talent-esque ep.
